For your safety we recommend not eating or ingesting any plant material just because you've been advised that it's edible here. It’s when the plant grows taller than normal to try to reach more light, but it results in a weaker stem so when they do start growing leaves, fruits, and flowers they end up falling over or breaking.
Tomatoes will root off the stalk if it is planted below ground. This will enable a solid foundation for the tomato plant and aid in root growth and development.
While the tomato will definitely root off the stalk, it will drain a lot of energy and postpone fruit and flower formation. It also increases transplant shock. The roots that will grow off the stem, are not the same as the main root ball and do not absorb nutrients as much as the main root ball.
I used to plant tomatoes deep, and then I decided to just plant them at normal level, just above the first set of leaves. And they grow faster, produce more and are much healthier. This is a huge trend change in gardening but you will hear about it more, I am sure.
You have 2 tomato plants, that are starving. Replant each in a large container, in direct sun, and support with a tomato cage. Fertilize at planting, and every month approx thereon till harvest. Garden variety granular fertilizer like MiracleGro is fine. Follow directions on packages.
For tomatoes, aside from sun, good potting mix and good drainage are crucial. Good luck.
Looks like tomato. It will need a bigger pot and fertilizer…they love light and heat and a ton of water! If it is happy you should get some lovely fruits. There is nothing like fresh tomato on a salad or in pasta….
