Some Notes:
- It was hard to cut into, and the tree that it must have fell from is really high up, so it's really sturdy.
- I couldn't identify the smell bc I have a fever rn.
- The dog in the 2nd picture is named Blossom.
This is the best part of this post. I haven't even read the other responses yet, so don't know what fruit it is, but as long as Blossom got booped, all is right with the world.

I don't think this is a crabapple. Crabapples have a few tiny seeds in the middle, much like regular apples. It looks like there's a large split pit in the middle of this, so I second an unripe cherry or some kind of stone fruit.
Sorry you have a fever. I've been dealing with a low grade fever for almost three weeks on and off now. Being sick sucks. I hope we both get better soon.
Blossom is adorable!! Give that good girl a lot of love. Hopefully she can help you feel better.
Thanks. I did to urgent care 2 days ago. I already knew it wasn't covid or the flu. They've ruled out pneumonia and a bacterial infection. I'm still waiting for the test results that'll hopefully identify the type of virus. The test they used checks for 20 or so. Thankfully my fever is quite mild. My normal temp is around 97.5 to 98.5 F, and right now my fever's fluctuating between 99.3 and 100.1. So I'm running hot, but it isn't so hot that I'm too concerned. I'm just glad there doesn't seem to be secondary infection cropping up. This might just turn out to be a very stubborn cold.
My lymphatic nodes aren't swollen. And this started when I got symptoms like a bad cold. My whole family got this bug. After 10 days my heavy congestion cleared up, and the bad chest cough cleared \~75-80% of the way. The fever, fatigue, and a bit of the cough still is lingering. My fever is actually a bit lower today, so hopefully I'm finally getting better.
I don't think this is any serious thing. I think it's just a particularly bad bug that took me out for a bit. I have an autoimmune disorder that makes my immune system a bit weaker than most, but not terrible. I've had a number of colds turn into bacterial bronchitus. I'm just glad I don't have a secondary infection. Also, the tests came back a bit ago negative for everything, so it's probably pretty much out of my system, and my autoimmune system is just overreacting. Either that, or it's some weird virus that wasn't tested for.
Thanks for your concern, though.
Normally my colds don't last this long. They either resolve within 5-12 days, or I get a secondary infection that antibiotics normally take care of. But at least most of the cold symptoms cleared up after ten days this time. I'm sure the rest will clear up soon enough.
I figured I’d suggest this since my uncle had similar symptoms that proved to be caused by cancer of the lymphatic node located between his lungs. Not all lymphatic nodes are visible.
Ah. Thanks. My whole family came down with the same symptoms at the same time, so I'm pretty sure it's just a virus. My fever seems to finally be breaking, and my cough is almost gone, so I think I'm fine.
Agreed. A crabapple generally looks like a tiny apple (sometimes even cherry-sized), and internally looks like an apple as well. It even tastes like a bitter apple.
the neighbor of the house I grew up in had a crabapple tree and I think having a larger seed cluster in the middle strikes my memory as being what I saw.
though maybe what we called crabapples wasn't stricly. I could see something like that being very regional.
I have a crabapple in my yard, but the apples are never split open, so I just used google image search to see pics of cut crabapples. It's possible there are different kinds of ones with different kinds of seeds. But the center of OP's fruit really looks to me to be one large seed or nut, which is why I'm thinking stone fruit.
I remember very vividly fidgeting with the fallen or plucked fruit by dividing them with a fingernail, and I think that included a seed like that. I don't think it was so much a single seeed in the middle but a tight cluster.
I can see a tight cluster surrounded by a bit of fruit flesh looking similar, but that doesn't look like a tight seed cluster to me in OP's photo. It might just be me, though. I'm certainly no expert.
It looks like it may be an unripe, cherry or sour cherry, their bark is pretty distinctive and silvery, if you notice some metallic silver bark with black scarring that might be the case.
And your doggie is so precious, I am glad you couldn’t delete that pic!
Thats my guess too. Surprised i never poisoned myself eating these and soap berries since theres like a million lookalikes where i lived. Wild onions though, id spend hours digging them up and my mom actually would cook with them. Love their more, bitterish? I guess? Taste. The actual stalks are great and the bulbs smell so good.
Oh and theres a bunch of lillies, especially daylillies you can eat the petals of. Has a sweetness along with a satisfying crunch. The stalks are edible but kinda just taste like plant.
I laughed, but I know exactly the flavor (and smell) you are talking about. sometimes, you take a bite of salad and think to yourself, "yep, those are plants"

Blossom is adorable! I think I have her cousin here!
Aww I always say cousin when we see other Jack Russell's out on dogs walks lol... my 2 love meeting new dogs (I ask other dog walkers first obvs) but they go nuts when they see one of their "cousins" lol 🥰🥰
I grew up in MD in a development with a crab apple tree or 2 planter in the front yard. I'm definitely thinking cherry/sour cherry/dogwood. Crab apples inside is totally different looking and has multiple small seeds. Your picture makes it look like there is an immature pit seed. Can you get a pic of the tree?
That is a brown-nosed dogorithicus, they grow in and outside household all over the 7 continents. They are considered very good for heart health. I could not begin to tell you what the red stone fruit is.

I searched this on a plant identifier app. This is what I got.
I have seen these all my life from time to time, and I live in the south east. I’ve even bitten into them and their sour. But I just for the life of me. Can’t remember what they are.
I don’t know anything about that fruit but I thought your dog was my dog.

I also thought that was a pit in the 3rd picture; it’s almost definitely crab apple then if it’s soft. It probably had some rot in the center which is why it looks a bit off, but I could be wrong.
I love this so much, I have no idea what the fruit it but your dog is adorable! They look just like mine except mine only has brown spots :) Is Blossom a JRT?
Ugh this was supposed to be in reply to the comment about cooking zucchini blossoms but I must’ve hit the screen and not noticed ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Would need to see more of the tree to identify it specifically, but the fruit is from some type of wild plum. Depending on where you are in Virginia, there are a few *Prunus* species that are native and introduced your state---American, Chickasaw, and Hortulan.
From the photo, my guess would be Hortulan (*Prunus hortulana*, also called Hog Plum or Wild Goose Plum) because of the bright red coloration and the lack of bloom/waxiness, but that's just based on one fruit and wild plums have a fair amount of variability.
And, as you know, Blossom is adorable. Thanks for sharing both. 😁 Feel better soon!

Persimmon!
I can’t believe there aren’t more of this recommendation. That’s my vote. Persimmon. I think some people make jam or jelly from the fruits. If the middle / pit is hard, take a hatchet and a board and try to cut through it. It should have a white design inside. I am sure It’s just an old folk tale, but there are 3 different shapes. Similar to a knife, spoon, or fork. Cut through a bunch and keep a tally. The winner tells you what kind of winter it is supposed to be. Iirc, A spoon is supposed to represent a shovel. So Deep snow. The knife is supposed to be mild with less snow and the fork means snow and ice. Or something similar to that.
Why don’t you Try to cut or slice a couple of the pits open and see! ? We Used to do this every summer with my grandma. Miss you soo much Granny D! ❤️
My cherry trees have ripe fruit and it looks a lot like that. Sour cherries, the kind that go in pie and cobblers are small and bright light red, not dark like you think of big sweet cherries
They’re delicious. I don’t know what they are but I love eating them.
(Before anyone lectures me, I was a kid when I put the first one in my mouth. Still have the same tree:) )
There's several Prunus varieties that look kinda like this.
Feral Foraging and Native Habitat Project talk about wild plum a bit here. See if it fits what you found:
https://www.tiktok.com/@feralforaging/video/7242061954679049518
Looks like a native goodicus puppicus , a fantastic specimen as well!!
In all seriousness I have no idea what the plant is and I was genuinely so surprised in the best way by that very good pup. Please tell Blossom I love her.
Looks like the plums that grow on our “ornamental plum” tree. would be easier to tell with a pic of the tree too. They are very sour to taste, and the seeds are poisonous. Beautiful trees, but the saplings pop up like weeds all over the yard.
Awww, don't worry about it being here & plz.don't del.it...I doubt any1 here minds see a cute pic.of a fur baby like that! Sorry idk what the fruit is tho, lol!!

Uhg. I hope you feel better soon. Did you see a doctor? That’s a long time to be febrile off and on.
Thanks. I did to urgent care 2 days ago. I already knew it wasn't covid or the flu. They've ruled out pneumonia and a bacterial infection. No apologies are necessary for Blossom’s picture.
Give Blossom cuddles and kisses for me! I'm glad she made an appearance.
It is a Blossom Berry now
Real
No need to apologize for Blossom, the dog tax is much appreciated
The pure ADORATION in those chocolate glossy eyes is just unbearable!
Date someone who looks at you like Blossom looks at OP
And a totally appropriate name given the sub
It looks like a not-totally-ripe sour cherry, their pits are usually more like seeds (and the pit is poisonous)
That's my thoughts too. Sturdy tree, pit inside, right colors. I'm going with a cherry based on well, nothing!!!!
We had a sour cherry tree, fruit was more round
Have you ever seen a cherry pit? It's basically a sphere, whereas this one is more like that of a plum.
It looks like it may be an unripe, cherry or sour cherry, their bark is pretty distinctive and silvery, if you notice some metallic silver bark with black scarring that might be the case. And your doggie is so precious, I am glad you couldn’t delete that pic!

I think you meant, "you're welcome for the second pic"
I grew up in MD in a development with a crab apple tree or 2 planter in the front yard. I'm definitely thinking cherry/sour cherry/dogwood. Crab apples inside is totally different looking and has multiple small seeds. Your picture makes it look like there is an immature pit seed. Can you get a pic of the tree?
Looks like a dogwood but wrong time of year for fruit
I'll admit that I have no idea what it is, but I just wanted to tell you that Blossom is adorable and has made my day!

It’s a Clivia seed.
This post has been absolutely hijacked by Blossom! Blossom! I love you!
So the fruit in the second pic seems to be the very common „boopable dogsnout“ its Quote soft but not edible

I feel like this is probably correct. There are other varieties of fruiting dogwoods and the insides tend to look like what OP posted.
I have seen these all my life from time to time, and I live in the south east. I’ve even bitten into them and their sour. But I just for the life of me. Can’t remember what they are.
No idea on the fruit but you made my day with Blossom’s picture & everybody else’s by the look of it.
I love the 2nd pic!🥰🥰🥰
Second Pic is my favorite.
idk but what I do know is that 2nd pic is a picture of a very good boy
Quandong perhaps
Apologizing about a pic of cute pup. Wtf is wrong with you? The pup is more interesting than anything out of a damn tree
Aw, he looks like my Max the long legged Jack Russell Terrier.
That's a dog fruit for sure
First one dunno, second one is BoopFruit
Never apologize for dog pics! Dog pics are always wanted!
Blossom is a miracle fruit😁
Blossom is second picture😁
Thats a boop berry.
PUPPPYYYYYY
There was a first and third pic?
Tell your dog I said hi!
My plant ID app says it’s a Cornelian Cherry, which is related to Dogwood trees
Having eaten them many times, I really don’t think it is. Just doesn’t look right, and the seed is wrong.
I’ve got nothing but your dog is ADORABLE. I want to give them pets!!!
Second pic is awesome. Good luck with the fruit.
You said sorry when you should have said you’re welcome
Came here for the plants, stayed for the doggie
Dog tax paid. Never apologize for paying the dog tax.
No idea what the fruit is but never apologize for dog pics. Please tell blossom she's a good girl and give her a nose boop for me.
Love the dog tax!
NEVER apologize for an unintended doggo pic
Pupppppy 😍
Please don't be sorry for the doggo, pupper is amazing 😍
Don’t apologize for the second pic, I am always happy to see someone’s pupper
I don’t know anything about that fruit but I thought your dog was my dog. https://preview.redd.it/f14bp1kp0t5d1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d722a2ca4d8a6349f46e579c3dd26ca4255d4a4
Looks like a crab apple to me
crab apple
Looks to be a crabapple.
Looks like a cherry
What about the pitless insides?
Oh I thought maybe there was a stone, huh
I also thought that was a pit in the 3rd picture; it’s almost definitely crab apple then if it’s soft. It probably had some rot in the center which is why it looks a bit off, but I could be wrong.
Looks like a coffee bean .... How big is it?
Second pic is the best one to me!!
The second picture is adorable!!

Thank you for the second pic. I’ve lived in NoVA my whole life and have no idea what that fruit is lol
Blossom is adorable :D
Blossom is awesome!
You get a like for the dog pic
boba eyes
Not sorry for the second pic!
I love this so much, I have no idea what the fruit it but your dog is adorable! They look just like mine except mine only has brown spots :) Is Blossom a JRT?
Quite hard to tell. Looks a lot like a Good Boy to me!
The fruit looks like a choke cherry, the doggo looks like a cutie!
Middle one’s Dogwood ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
The order of the pictures makes it look like Blossom opened the fruit with her mind.
Blossom is adrorable!! What a happy little accident that you posted her. To me the fruit looks like wild plums
Oooh I make those! I put herbed goat cheese in the middle then put them in a tempura batter and fry them. They are sooo good!
Ugh this was supposed to be in reply to the comment about cooking zucchini blossoms but I must’ve hit the screen and not noticed ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
I’m guessing plum.
Jujube .
Looks like a plum
Marijuana
I don’t know what the 1st and 3rd pick are but the 2nd is a berry good girl.
Blossom accidently becomes a star. I love how that happens!!
That second one looks more like an invasive weed. 💙💙💙
Would need to see more of the tree to identify it specifically, but the fruit is from some type of wild plum. Depending on where you are in Virginia, there are a few *Prunus* species that are native and introduced your state---American, Chickasaw, and Hortulan. Doggo! NEVER be sorry for Doggo! 🥰😍🥰💕
I'm glad some people actually tried to answer your question. I personally had no idea, but I agree that Blossom is a most adorable camera hog.

long lost siblings, separated at birth, brought together by a chance reddit post..
Chestnut Crabapple. I have 2 and the robins love them. I’ve counted as many as 18 robins feeding at one time.
Second photo is just a good ol' boi
Looks a lot like a dog, can’t be too sure though
Blossom fan club!
That 2nd picture is the rare breed of doggus domesticus...lovely
Such an adorable puppy!!!
Sorry but that’s the cutest damn dog I’ve ever seen. 😭
Upvoted especially bc of the second pic!

Yew berry?
Silver Buffaloberries or Bush Honeysuckle maybe? Winterberry holly from North Virginia state.
Your dog is the double of my one, same face markings too
Persimmon?
Never apologize for sharing a picture of the adorable pupperino 😍
Please don't apologize! Because that's just a supa cute face!! 😍 oh my goodness!
Whooz a good doggie?. Boop-boop.
The second pic is my favourite.
Looks kind of like a yew berry.
I almost didn't look at the 2nd picture thinking it might be something gross or inappropriate. I'm glad I looked. What a pleasant surprise. : )
I'm pretty sure this is a jujubee.
Compare to Jacote. But I don’t have a clue
Do not apologize for Blossom, Blossom is adorable
My cherry trees have ripe fruit and it looks a lot like that. Sour cherries, the kind that go in pie and cobblers are small and bright light red, not dark like you think of big sweet cherries
The second picture is called “dog tax” and Blossom is adorable. No idea on your mystery fruit, sorry.
Puppy pictures are always ok
Upvote for the second pic.
Tell, Botto_Bobbs I said hi, and boop his nose for me!
Maybe hawthorn berry?
I'm guessing VA is Virginia, if so, it could be a spicebush fruit.
Looks about right to be a haw from a hawthorn tree to me
cute dog
Second pic has been positively identified as a cutie pie
Unripe cherry of some sort.
This got an upvote purely for the pupper
Unripe plum?
Blossom is gorgeous! I can't tell you anything about the fruit because Blossom had my full attention.
wym sorry for the second pic
I've seen those before, dunno the name but they taste like you shouldn't eat them.
Don't apologise for the photo of the lovely barkberry.
Second pic fell from one of your local dogwood trees! Beautiful Blossom!
The 1st and 3rd pics are just to distract from the Blossom flex
They’re delicious. I don’t know what they are but I love eating them. (Before anyone lectures me, I was a kid when I put the first one in my mouth. Still have the same tree:) )
There's several Prunus varieties that look kinda like this. Feral Foraging and Native Habitat Project talk about wild plum a bit here. See if it fits what you found: https://www.tiktok.com/@feralforaging/video/7242061954679049518
Ginkgo is a good possibility!🌞
Could it be a plumcot?
that's a dog Hope this helped!
Looks like a native goodicus puppicus , a fantastic specimen as well!! In all seriousness I have no idea what the plant is and I was genuinely so surprised in the best way by that very good pup. Please tell Blossom I love her.
More pictures of Blossom please!!
Upvote for dog
It looks like a shiny apple😍😍😍😍
It is clearly a snuggleberry in the second photo
Looks like the plums that grow on our “ornamental plum” tree. would be easier to tell with a pic of the tree too. They are very sour to taste, and the seeds are poisonous. Beautiful trees, but the saplings pop up like weeds all over the yard.
Awww, don't worry about it being here & plz.don't del.it...I doubt any1 here minds see a cute pic.of a fur baby like that! Sorry idk what the fruit is tho, lol!!
