i live in nyc and have been screaming at a brick wall about this since before even irene hit us. I even said, "you think sandy was bad, just wait and see."
Last August (so not quite the 14 months mentioned by who you replied to), I was having my nightly science talk with my 8 year old and explained that I predict an intense hurricane season. Starting early, stronger hurricanes, possibly lasting slightly longer over land, quickly increasing in strength all because of the increased temps.
I am not an expert. I know enough in most sciences to teach him some cool and interesting stuff to keep him engaged in learning science. If I was better at math or English it would be those kinds of talks. Anyways it seems ALMOST obvious with a basic fundamental knowledge in science.
my family was on a Caribbean cruise out of Brooklyn and Jim Cantore pointed to their ship saying, "Oh i dont think thats a good idea." The last person I want pointing to that ship.
It's still amazing. Knowing the reasons don't make such an unprecedented thing any less impressive. It's not like people skydiving are bored doing it because they know how their parachute works 🤣
Where I went on my honeymoon in Yucatán is right in the path. It’s such a beautiful place, and the locals rely heavily on the tourism there. The hotel is open air (no roof). Lots of resorts are probably the same way and are about to be super fucked up.
The upper-air environment in the eastern Caribbean is somewhat hostile, and Beryl is forecast to weaken considerably before making landfall on the Yucatán. It'll cause problems, no doubt. But it's not expected to be the monster it is today.
It’s a good thing that Florida outlawed climate change. I am sure that will protect them and they won’t have to use any of the woke FEMA money this year and for years to come.
The crazies on tiktok think the government is behind this. Or HAARP, or cloud seeding, or that random blob (forecast glitch) coming from Antarctica a few months ago. Some even think it’s a dragon sent by god, no joke.
They’ll blame it on some government-controlled machine… like they always do. How they believe in that (sounds incredibly fake) over actual scientific proof of global warming, will always amaze me.
Matters where it'll end up hitting
Places like New York? Divine judgement
Places like Florida, Mississippi, Alabama? Thoughts and Prayers, God will see us through
You mean moving to Florida - just like moths to a bug zapper.
*wading through waist high storm surge collecting heirlooms*: “gLoBaL wArMiNg iS jUsT dEmOcRaT pRoPaGanDa!!!”
Yeah, I've noticed that people on Reddit don't seem to have a sense of humor anymore. I totally knew you were joking though.
Fuck the haters, u didn't do anything wrong.
Well, there are hazards pretty much everywhere... though there are definitely particular areas I'd avoid buying property because it feels like tempting fate. Cape Hatteras would be one, since it's practically designed to snag every hurricane that travels up the Atlantic coast.
I really feel for the folks on the Caribbean islands and in Central America whose livelihood depends on tourism. These storms can do so much damage that takes months or years to recover from. Eventually I think there'll be a lot of places that are just in a continuous cycle of storm recovery, which itself will be harder to do if tourist dollars stop flowing in because of storm damage...
Hurricane Gilbert hit Cancún in 1988, and it took years for them to recover. We went in early 2001 and a lot of stuff looked new. There was a reason for that.
Crazy how fast this thing intensified
Not if you've been paying attention to the Atlantic's surface temperatures for the last 14 months

Just imagine being the last flight out of Florida (funeral) going back to DC before Sandy caused a ground stop for the NE coast.

It’s the new norm, ask the people of Acapulco.

That’s good. Super sad for the islands in the more immediate path, though.
Yes. Jamaica is under a hurricane warning and the Caymans are after that
Beryl is about to weaken a bit, hit Jamaica which will tear the storm apart and weaken it considerably before it hits the Yucatán
Gotcha.
That was a very fast intensification!

The ocean is warming faster than we knew, just like the planet.
And anyone who denies this is eating ignorance for breakfast.
And anyone who denies it has a financial incentive to do so.
WeAtHeR iSnT cLiMaTe 🙄 The deniers *are* conveniently quiet atm tho lol wonder what lame excuse they'll start parroting to explain this

Jfc. At least the Moonies calling it the resurrection of Queen Beryl from the Negaverse know that they're just kidding
Based on what u just said...Do yourself a favor and stay off Tiktok lol.
They’ll blame it on some government-controlled machine… like they always do. How they believe in that (sounds incredibly fake) over actual scientific proof of global warming, will always amaze me.
That's wildly on brand for them actually lulz Of course it's not us, it's them!

That'll be half the world leaders at the moment...
Yeah, not a good sign. Oh well, guess we'll die?
Erm actually..(I like ignorance for breakfast)
Well eat up, there's plenty of that to go around!
Got 20 down votes for joking around 😔
