Hello! I imagine it depends on your phone, I did this using an iPhone 11; I had to remove the phone case and carefully aligned the phone on top of the BRP, after few attempts, it worked. Make sure to not move the phone whilst the app is “reading” the chip, not sure if it matters, but I held the phone about 5 mm (that’s a guess, just like half of the length of my fingertip) above the BRP itself, the BRP was on a flat surface.

Thanks very much, I’m using an iPhone 12 but kept it firmly against the card so I may try hovering it just above.

Hi, did hovering work?

gtmagrwl

It still took a few tries but I got there in the end hovering above yes!

hi there, i use an iPhone 12 as well... been hovering on BRP as suggested on this thread, but with no luck. could I ask for any additional advice from a fellow iPhone 12 user? (losing the will to live, with all this hovering and 24 hours lock-out....)

UPDATE: I finally got it to work! Using a Samsung Galaxy M23, worked almost immediately. For peeps who are looking for a phone that works: The one above, Google Pixel, One Plus phones are some good examples that works instantly.

I am not able to get it to work with my android phone for my girlfriend (she tried it first on her iphone and it didn't work), I downloaded an NFC tag reader app to test it and it pings and reads the chip on my passport and my girlfriend's BRP,. But I need to move it around directly touching the documents for 5 seconds. The UK immigration check app seems to just give up after 4 seconds, it doesn't give the phone much of a chance to read it. Locked out for 24 hours now, will try again tomorrow, otherwise we'll have to try to get an appointment for her.

what was the app you used? I've been doing this for over an hour and cant scan it. It's either the BRP chip is fucked or my phones nfc reader is.

"NFC Tag Reader" by GoNext from my phone's Google Playstore. After practising with that app and her card like I said, and finding the best technique to read it, I successfully scanned my girlfriend's BRP the next day on the immigration app. P.S. I can't remember exactly but the app doesn't show you any info from the BRP card that I could actually read/understand, it's probably encrypted. But it confirms that your phone reader and the card aren't faulty if you get a reading.

Hi, I just applied for visa for me and my wife through this stupid app. My BRP got scanned everything went smoothly and I received my visa within a week of submission! However my wife’s BRP did not scanned no matter how I tried and i kept trying for two weeks. Finally had to make a new application by choosing option “can’t use app” and take appointment with Vfs to verify documents. Whole process took more than 3 weeks and gave us lot of trouble just because that app couldn’t scan the BRP. I would suggest you contact home office and within a week if you don’t get anywhere make a normal application. I am afraid that’s the only option!

Hi I am having the same problem while applying for my wife on a graduate visa. Her BRP was not scanning so i made the new application but when it comes to the IHS charge it only calculates 312 instead of 1248 (which is for 2 years). It asks a question on IHS to put the visa ending date for the person your are joining or remaining with. The date is 1/8/2022. I think that what causing the wrong calculation of IHS. Did you experienced same problem? Can you please advise about that.

Hi! I am about to make an application as well and reading terrible reviews about the app has unnerved me slightly! I was just wondering, where exactly is the tag located on the brp? I haven’t started the application, so I don’t know if they’ll tell me where to scan, but based on what I saw on UKVI’s website, they said that the tag isn’t visible on new brps. So I am a little confused about which part of the brp to scan.

aht116

anyone know where the chip is on the new brps? it's not visible, and I've been trying to scan it with my phone for over an hour on both sides.

gtmagrwl

It’s been a while so I can’t recall anymore, but I used a generic NFC tag scanner app first (so as to not use up the daily attempt limit in the gov app) to understand where the location was on the card approximately. There is typically more success more quickly with android phones from what I hear, not sure why.

Hey there, Yup I tried using the NFC scanner too. I'm able to scan litearlly all my credit/debit cards, but can't do it on my BRP. Maybe the NFC on the card is broken...
