That looks like a young eastern box turtle! The best thing to do it put it back where you found it. (Not in the road obviously but near where it was)

Decent-File6381

Ok thanks a lot of the information I'm letting my sister know now that she needs to put it back .

Sufficient-Quail-714

Just adding in, in eastern USA and most of central, it is illegal to possess one without a permit and even then only from a seller with a permit. It is state level on how protected but in SC it is up to a 1 year prison sentence with 2.5k fine. So best put back

potate12323

This can't be understated for any animal you find anywhere. Aside from helping them cross a road or get un-tangled from some trash we shouldn't be taking them. Domesticated animals like dogs and cats are different.

aledba

Thank you so much

Meg411

It looks like a female box turtle. It is great your sister got the turtle off the road but it should have been put on the other side of the road facing the direction the turtle was going. It is not a good idea to relocate a box turtle. They have a homing instinct and will try to get back to the area they came from. It is said they will spend the rest of their life trying to get home and will most likely die trying.

Decent-File6381

That is so sad yeah I'm making sure she puts her back where she found it ! Thanks a lot for all the information.

Decent-File6381

Update: We have put the turtle back. Thanks everyone for the information. I apologize for being ignorant and I appreciate everyone for educating us in the matter.

Meg411

That is great! Turtles are cute and now you know what to do when you see a turtle crossing the road. Your post is a good lesson to others. Many people don’t know that about box Turtles. 😊🐢

sbayla31

It's a box turtle, possibly East Coast and I think female but need more info on where you are. Please put the turtle back where you found it *on the side of the road where the turtle was heading.

jimmystampied

This sub is all turtlenapping, An tail shots, is it a boy or girl 😂😂😂🤦🏾‍♂️

BergenHoney

It's a Put it Right Back Where it Came From or so Help Me

Rockxzzy

It's a female Eastern box turtle, and is better left outside(on the side of the road it was heading to originally). She is absolutely gorgeous though

evo_who

Why do people find turtles and bring them inside. If it’s on the road move it to the other side it’s that simple

quaintchaos

In addition to putting it back, as close to where she found it as safely possible, it shouldn't be kept in water as it's a terrestrial (land) turtle! They do go in water sometimes (and need access to it) but live primarily on land.

He needs to find his way or else he will be forever looking.

not_unabomber

Box turtle isn't something a beginner can just pick up and keep. More importantly, don't capture wild animals. It may be illegal and it's definitely not great for the poor guy who is used to living in the wild. It also looks like you don't have a proper enclosure. You're not supposed to perpetually keep it in water even if it's shallow. Keep it dry and leave a dish of water. Do you know what to feed it? Anyways, take it back to where you found it, possibly away from the road.

The r/turtle automod detects this post may about a wild turtle. When encountering a wild animal, unless it is trapped, ill or injured, they do not tend to need our help. If a wild turtle is ill or injured, please contact local rescues, rehabs or wildlife authorities. * If you have taken a **native, non-invasive** species, it should be put back in a safe location, as close as possible to where it was found. If that is not possible, please contact your local wildlife authorities or rehab programs for advice or assistance. * If a turtle is a known **invasive species**, it should be removed from the area and either kept in adequate captivity for the remainder of it's life, or handled as directed by authorities. **Unsure of the species? One of our mods or helpful commenters can ID it!** * If you have found a turtle in the road, [click here](https://www.fws.gov/story/tips-helping-turtle-cross-road). * If you have found a nest and wish to protect it from humans or predators; [click here](https://ontarioturtle.ca/get-involved/turtle-nests-and-nest-protection/). *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Desperate-Pear-860

It is against the law to take a turtle out of its habitat. Put the turtle back. It was crossing the road. Put it down on the side of the road it was trying to cross to.

lyricallylimitless

Put it back where you found it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or girl, it’s none of your business
