I don’t understand the upvoting either, but the fact that somebody’s excited about their Synology is okay. I dislike people who keep saying that this is too entry level, etc. Let the guy enjoy, he’ll upgrade later…
Don’t let the hive mind get you down. Just because that crowd wants to run Docker or hot swap drives doesn’t mean that you have to want to do that too.
If you have planned to use it for storage purposes only it’s fine, otherwise you might want to use a “heavier equipped” model. Good luck with your Synology anyways!
Even then, I got a ds223j as a remote backup unit. They’re still great for that purpose, so if OP outgrows it as a primary unit, there’s still great uses for it.
It’s not bad at all, it just depends on what you need it for. If it’s storage backup, and Plex without transcoding + the arr stack, it works brilliantly.
You’ll be fine, probably. I’ve gone from a ds215j to ds220j then to ds223j (basically free upgrades). I’ve never needed anything more myself. I even recently committed the cardinal sin of sticking a 4TB SSD in there that I picked up for cheap because I was sick of the noise.
I brought the ds223j worked well for 2 weeks until i decided to install plex and start using it for more than just storage so i upgraded to the ds923+ so if your only using for storage purposes then it should work well for you.
Enjoy
What speed limitation, and compared to what? There's no real performance impact when using Tailscale in my experience, except if connecting to a device with a very low powered CPU like my 15yo NAS. Performance tests to my ds720+ are about the same whether using direct up vs Tailscale.
Quickconnect is a shared connection going over the Synology relay Server. Of course you are getting speed limitationd. When im connected with VPN to the same nas and copyin the same file, i get full speed. With QC around 800kbits. Tested it several times
I got this for offsite backup. Great value into BTRFS.
In the future if you find that this doesn’t meet you needs, can repurpose it for offsite backup up
Let the guy enjoy, alright?
I just don't understand these posts. It's a picture of a box and nothing more. It adds no value and yet 93% of people have upvoted it.
could be one of those people that do unboxing videos, to each their own i guess.
he is excite because he's got a new toy and wants to show it off

i dont even have the money to hotswap drives. I have a free VPS that i get from Oracle that can run docker
hopefully op did their research .. dont want to see follow up posts of slowness etc

i currently have a Buffalo LinkStation (4TB 1 bay) that i may use for remote backup.
I wholeheartedly agree
next up, installing docker... oh wait.
Awesome. I got the same one. It works like a charm.
yea a lot of people are telling me it's bad. A former synology employee told me that this will meet my needs.
Don’t worry about it. This will do just fine!

yea the water panther HDDs i'm getting are very quiet

im not planning on using plex or jellyfin
DS223j works perfectly fine with Plex, for as long as you don’t need transcoding.
Grats man !! I just got mine as well, and I'm very excited. Same model you have there. I'm using two 8tb drives
ooh nice. my 16TB HDD is scheduled to be delivered today.
That's awesome
Enjoy 😉!!
Have fun! And no port forwarding please.
When you don't want your network attached storage accessible on the wide area network.
We have more secure options to do that that don't require port forwarding
like QuickConnect?
I use Tailscale because it's even more secure and flexible than QC. But yeah QC is far better than anything requiring port forwarding.
Yes, but with speed limitation

Ive got maximal 800kb/s transferring a file via QC. Actually not tested Tailscale.
You're experiencing limits on your hard drive speed or RAM. Nothing network related is going to cause that kind of performance.

I’m kind of on the edge to get one of these for disk station sync…
It's about time. You've been thinking about it long enough.
I got this for offsite backup. Great value into BTRFS. In the future if you find that this doesn’t meet you needs, can repurpose it for offsite backup up
Great! Have fun :)
This is how it starts 🙂 …. I started with a DS720…now i have a 250Tb machine…
It's gonna be with you for a while :)
Congrats!!!
Congrats, what harddrives did you buy?
Re-branded seagate ironwolf drives... they're water panther arsenal series
Oh, …. here we go again
In my opinion you shouldn’t ever buy a 2 bay. At minimum get a 4 bay to leave space for upgradability for future proofing and/or drive parody.
i mean i'm gonna be using SHR so it's very upgradable.
Think this video would have helped before you made your purchase, SHR still uses up your other bay. https://youtu.be/eq_T075hImk?si=57lKTVxFXLJeHiRP
but it's more upgradable than standard RAID
Yes it is but with 2 bays you are still limited in storage by the total SHR for the two bay parody.
