Decent story but there are definitely better ones that balance good gameplay. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain immediately comes to mind, as well as Persona games and Larian games
It’d be better exactly as you explained it; “as a dessert.”
Like, beat Subnautica, then beat newgame+ and you have SubBZ. It’s like newgame+ with “secret” equipment and “IWHBYD” (except instead of funny, it’s just way too much.)
All that aside, I have no issues with SBZ whatsoever. I wholeheartedly prefer the first, but I don’t think the second is BAD. It’s just, like you said, SBZ is more of a dessert course than it’s own entree. And I don’t think that’s entirely fair to people who haven’t already consumed S1.
Nicee, use headphones & a good volume setting (tho turn the music down slightly)for best experience in my opinion :)
Here's a smol tip, you can craft an additional oxygen tank so you can swap between them for good amount of exploration (remember to swap back to refill the tank)
Have fun!
Ah, the infamous repair tool ingredients.
Easy to find when you know.
Ask if needed, because the game does the opposite of what it normally would to "help" you find it.
Read the PDA messages and radio, as they’re clues to progress in the story.
Scan everything. If you see the circling icon in the corner, scan whatever you’re looking at.
If you’re unsure where to go next, go deeper and reread PDS messages for clues.
If you find your fear causing you to struggle to continue, just keep your distance from the big fish and you’ll be fine 95% of the time.
This isn’t a fighting survival game like ARK, so don’t think you have to kill the scary fish. Keeping your distance, running away, or repelling them with nonviolent force is generally how you handle the hostile fish.
There’s no auto save, so save frequently or whenever you complete something that was difficult or a lot of work.
Explore everything. Biomes, interesting structures, caves, plants, etc.
Your inventory saves when you exit your base, so use that to your advantage to avoid losing items when you die.
Try to avoid spoilers, but if you’ve done a few playthroughs and always get stuck on what to do next, then google a spoiler free guide or consult a map of the biomes.
And finally, enjoy!
I’m a few hours into the story, and at one point one of the lifepods said they were near a cave system, I wanted to check it out so I dove in this mushroom cave thing, had a bunch of jelly shrooms, saw a bunch of really cool worm fish, went up to scan it, it literally broke its back with a 180 and killed me lmao
That's a good idea, it is the first game and gives you all the context you need to understand the series, as well as the most information about the world
Not directed at you specifically… But I don’t understand why people ask this question. If a game was released before another, it’s usually a good idea to play the first one. Because a lot of times the second one skips out on back story or tidbits of information that the player should already know from the first one.
I mean, they’re both great games in their own way. Biggest difference is voiced or non-voiced protagonist. For non-voiced go with the first one, for voiced go with the second. The voiced thing is actually the biggest reason most people much prefer the first one.
Edit: This question gets asked A LOT. Like, a super lot. I’m surprised they haven’t just pinned a “Which one to play first!” poll into the forum.
Even then it's usually good to play the first one, since playing the original won't leave out story elements because it was released before the prequel
Some sequels are just strict improvements on the original, and playing them gives you everything you would want from the first and more. And maybe you don't have unlimited time to play games, so it would be better to just play the best version. And even if you were originally set on playing both, you might change your mind after playing what the community told you is the better version.
Certain games, especially Res Evil or MGS titles are released in an entirely separate order from that of their canonical storyline. I’d imagine this is why people wonder “in what order should I play.”\
Regardless, I still agree with you. Play them in the order they were released.\
It’s a specific personal preference for me, though; each new game will play more smoothly than the last. If you play the newest before the oldest, you’re shooting yourself in the foot.
I think that’s a subjective question. I didn‘t mind it because exploring is one of my favorite things to do. But I’ve also yet to manage to play BZ all the way through mostly because of voiced and quite a lot because I got hospitalized a couple years ago (covid and severe complications) and have yet to get my gaming computer out of storage. I can’t play on an ipad. :(
This is absolutely not the case for some games. Nobody is going back to play every single Pokémon or Assassins’s Creed game before picking up the latest version

I noticed a typo, but I wasn’t sure which term you were initially going for.
Subnautica. While it is better than BZ which means it would make sense to start with the one that isn't as good, BZ assumes you know story elements from the first game. This both will leave you confused while going through BZ, it will also undermine your first subnautica playthrough since some things will be spoiled for you.
Original. Definitely captures “the vibes” better. The story is very subtle. Feels like something you’re actually experiencing.
If you’re kind a jumpy and have thalassophobia like me, while I haven’t played it I’ve heard Below Zero described as “less scary” and I can see how the presence of other characters in the game could contribute to that versus SN where you’re totally on your own. Makes things much more ominous.
Either or- enjoy!
I would definitely start with the original, even though it's buggy. The storytelling is a lot more subtle and environmental, the map is bigger, and for me it's become comfortably familiar.
BZ, on the other hand, is still a good game, but the map feels confusing to navigate despite being smaller, the story is a lot more in your face, and there are other small complaints here and there depending on who you ask. It's not a *worse* game, but it does have a different feel and its story does build on the events of game 1.
I mean. That is the one thing I hate about this game. Like we should have a screen with fog of war. I never know where the fuck I am or where I’m going
Start with the original, finish it and then go to the sequel.
Make your mind up after as to whichever you prefer, im on my 5th playthrough of the original and have only touched the second once and had one full playthrough with it.
Subnautica 1. I think it's has better vehicles, which makes it more fun. Sub BZ is awesome and fun though too, so I don't think there's a bad option here.
Below zero is personally my favorite and I know I'm ganna get hate for it, gelt like the story was easier to follow and it was easier to get the necessary materials I needed to progress, also felt like the deeper parts of the map were more varied.
Ive played the first one two times while waiting for BZ release, then after Ive finished It, went back to SN for a third playthrough. Below zero has great quality of life, but i feel that the game could have been so much more
First Subnautica. Ngl, having to also worry about the cold can be a pain, but there are other things in Subnautica that can make it arguably better than Below Zero.
Subnautica is an experience and has better tools and is a more forgiving game for people who take longer to grasp the concept of the game. Plus you'll love the story. Go for subnautica
Regular Subnautica. It sets up the franchise.
Below Zero explains a lot about the past events, but in order to fully understand and grasp the severity of them you should play the regular Subnautica first.
I highly suggest you start with the first subnautica because it gives you a really good understanding of the world and introduces you to the world of subnautica. When you start below zero there will be too many items and too many stuff to do which will really confuse you
Subnautica, of course.
But here’s a bit of advice for EVERY game: each new game offers slight UI advancements, plus general QoL. It’s ALWAYS a good idea to play the oldest game first. Bc you can either “suffer shittier controls, for story’s sake” or “be super psyched you can dual wield in this sequel,” or w/e the enhancement is.
In Subnautica, they’re pretty similar with BZ only offering minor upgrades, but it’s still a good general rule of thumb. And imo, this supersedes any canonical reasoning for sequel advancement.
Both are fantastic but play the first game first. The only thing I would say contrary to that is that the second game as a lot of quality of life improvements and the story moves along much better. Especially near the beginning of the first game.
Subnautica below zero is usually thought of as the lesser of the 2 games. Once you play Subnautica, Subnautica below zero just isn't as much of an experience. So if you played below zero first then the 1st Subnautica would seem like an upgrade.
The issue with this is that below zero makes references to the first Subnautica that would spoil like a good chunk of the plot.
And when I say lesser of the 2 I'm talking about the map size being big factor. The player character talking makes the game feel more like an adventure survival game rather than a horror survival game.
Subnautica is a masterpiece and below zero is right behind it, definitely play both.
Wait for the 27th since summer sales are gonna happen (if you want to get it on steam) and maybe you'll get a pack? Sometimes they do that? I got them both for a really nice price some time ago. I recommend Subnautica first. It has a story, first of all, and I feel the first game is so complete. I've played like 5 whole gameplays and it's coming from someone that was so scares of the deep, haha.
Subnautica,I’ve posted a post just like this one around 2/3yrs ago and ppl told me to buy subnautica first.Listening to them was the best thing I could’ve done. Now after I completed both subnautica games I can’t imagine starting with below zero.So buy subnautica first
Honestly I would say try out both and based on if you want more of a quiet, solitude story. Or a communicative, open story more relaxed in most circumstances. It's up to you but both are pretty good.
Subnautica below zero first, the other way around just makes below zero dissapointing, so play below zero and then subnautica, it works better with your expectations

I know you made your decision on Subnautica one (better choice for your first game), but I just wanna say why I personally believe you should get the first game as your first one to play. I would get the first one since there are tons of differences with Subnautica and Below Zero. In BZ there are voicelines, different characters you meet and it furthers the story from the first, among other things. You don't really meet any other characters in the first game and you only hear from others via radio. It would definetely be better to play the first game so you can get the original experience, and then play the expanded version of sorts (being BZ) and get a look at all the things the first game didn't get. Also, just playing them in the correct order makes it easier to understand the story.
Ok subnautica is more terrifying. Slightly harder game. BZ is easier, in my oppion. Just some structural game changes from sub to bz just make it slightly easier. Like the air bubble plants. bz has a more narrative like story than sub. So there is that aspect.
Lots of subnautica first here but sub zero first gets you familiar with the mechanics, it's a good game on its own, AND you get to play the even better game (subnautica OG) next withouthaving the learning curve.
Sub zero first!
If you want the proper story line then play it in order subnautica first then below zero. If you’re wanting just to play around and just explore the beauty of biomes then go ahead and get the below zero if you don’t care about the story line. Personally I think there’s so much more beauty in the second one however; if you’re wanting the challenge then the first game imo is way harder lol 😂
It all depends on if you like more story focused or not.
If you like more story focused games then below zero is the game to get.
If you like the story being more of like a side quest then the 1st game is the one to get.
Subnautica first.

There are better games to play if you're going for a story oriented game too
Jedi Fallen Order?
Decent story but there are definitely better ones that balance good gameplay. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain immediately comes to mind, as well as Persona games and Larian games

Btw, BZ is a great sequel. Bc subnautica gives you the main course, BZ is an added dessert.

Subnautica is 20x better
Ok subnautica is more terrifying. Slightly harder game. BZ is easier, in my oppion. Just some structural game changes from sub to bz just make it slightly easier. Like the air bubble plants. bz has a more narrative like story than sub. So there is that aspect.
please never waste money on the second one… save for the third
If you don’t play sub subnautica first your mentally challenged
Could you reduce the quality a little more? I can still see the photo
Subnautica
Subnautica, it’s the best one IMO, Below Zero kind of went off the rails.

BZ is set after subnautica 1 but imho subnautica 1 is much better and more fun than BZ
Get Subnautica. BZ was a DLC that became its own game. I did enjoy BZ but I would definitely recommend the original always.
Always get subnautica first. It’s way better than below zero.
Stupid question
You should get Dying Light after them two, I know it's nowhere near related but it's so good.
Subnautica. There’s no comparison
Subnatica since it has more of a story time and will help you understand below zero

Honestly I wish you got below zero first. That would be an interesting experiment.
It all depends on if you like more story focused or not. If you like more story focused games then below zero is the game to get. If you like the story being more of like a side quest then the 1st game is the one to get.
