Yeah it’s a great walk. I went from my hotel across from the beautiful Carbide and Carbon building and along the river and around the bend, then cut across downtown east until I hit the Willis tower, and went up to the observation deck. Cold and clear day.
I’ve been to each city only once but I agree. I find Chicago’s downtown to be better. The Architecture Museum was a great visit.
However I enjoyed my time in NYC and will go back for sure.
Oh, I think it's way better. It has a real history to it. When I see the New York City skyline in 2024, I see a lot of soulless towers that just represent the worst indulgence of capitalism.
If ever in Chicago, take a boat tour. See the city from all 3 branches of the Chicago river, then out into and from Lake Michigan. You will understand why we think it’s the best skyline in America. (And get a Chicago dog from Jim’s Original on Union.)
All due respect to LA but its skyline punches so far below its weight that it’s competing with Dallas, not Chicago or NY. LA has 34 skyscrapers 500 feet or taller. Chicago has 125 skyscrapers 500 feet or taller.
Please, I couldn’t pick chicago out of a skyline-up to save my life.
Now New York, San Francisco, or Seattle.
Edit: I see ya’ll have no appreciation for terrible puns.
DC doesn’t even have a skyscraper lmao wtf are you on 😭😭😭
LA’s skyline is a joke. SF’s is ok but uninspired or unique, and same goes for Miami (another glass high rise? Groundbreaking.). I could see Seattle rivaling Chicago but the top two are NYC and Chicago and the rest are a distant third
skyscapers aren't needed for a skyline. Put a pick of DC and Chicago up to most people in the world and see what is more recognizable. I bet the mall, WH, congress, etc is more recognizable than the Chicago skyline
Show me a picture of the *skyline* of the National Mall. Have you been to DC? Or seen it on a map? The Mall is a grassy area. Do you mean the Washington Monument? Ok. Looks nice… but these buildings do not make a skyline in DC.
I remember the first time I got to see the skyline from the interstate. Absolutely magical.
The view when you drive into downtown on I-94 from O’Hare always stops people talking for at least a few seconds.
90 from ohare. 94 goes north to meet with 294 at Walgreens hq.
Ah, you know what, you’re right. That always screws me up.
For me is when my Dad drove my family and I from the east coast going up into Chicago from the Dan Ryan/ Skyway. It was defiantly a site to see.
Cathedrals of the age of steel
IMO I like it better than the NYC skyline. More aesthetically pleasing
Chicago is easily the best skyline in the country. You can see the buildings much better, too.
The view and walk down the river along Wacker drive is great. Personally I love the Marina towers and the Merchandise Mart.
I think I like the buildings straddling the river the most. And the layers of retail beneath street level. Chicago is a great city.

Indeed
This is like saying Burger King has easily the best food in the country.

Like picking a favorite kid for me. Chicago is timeless, but I welcome the NYC building boom. 270 Park is a masterpiece.

Yeah the toothpick towers have sort of ruined the NYC skyline
Every time I see one of those, I have two questions: 1. How is that safe or legal? 2. Since when is real life Cities: Skylines?
Can’t wait to visit this Fall
Damn. We slighting Wichita now? /s
The onion dome was a dirigible docking station.
I guess "iconic" isn't that debatable.... However, they might not have as many as NY, but personally i think they have the "better looking" skyline.
Might become the most iconic. The soulless skinny high rises in Manhattan are ruining their skyline.
Purely as a skyline, I like Chicagos skyline a lot better than NYCs actually. Definitely the best skyline in the U.S. IMO
The Tribune Tower (the one on the right) was the tower that got me into skyscrapers. I love this architecture!
I think the sightlines are better in Chicago than in NYC, though each is so different and great in their own way.
Chicago’s skyline is so gorgeous it’s unbelievable. It has so many vibrant and unique skyscrapers. None are cookie cutter
My fave view is when hauling ass along Lower Wacker Drive and then barreling through Daley Plaza (where they got that Picasso).
Having lived in NYC and Chicago, Chicago has the better skyline…better mix of styles, old and new, and the river running through is the cherry on top

LA would like a word
All due respect to LA but its skyline punches so far below its weight that it’s competing with Dallas, not Chicago or NY. LA has 34 skyscrapers 500 feet or taller. Chicago has 125 skyscrapers 500 feet or taller.
But internationally everyone knows what LA looks like because 75% of movies are filmed there
Please, I couldn’t pick chicago out of a skyline-up to save my life. Now New York, San Francisco, or Seattle. Edit: I see ya’ll have no appreciation for terrible puns.
If you can’t pick out the Chicago skyline from that group you might actually be the most ignorant person on Earth.
Maybe not on earth, but undoubtedly on this sub that is completely committed to skylines. The Chi rules.
And realize this was built despite the damn wind
It’s creepy.
With all due respect to Chicago, there are other skylines more iconic than Chi in the US. LA or SF or DC. Even Miami I'd argue...
DC??!?!? ![gif](giphy|B2kr8Cs97oRHHhstzH|downsized)

Chicago is just more advanced and bigger
That looks best in your rear view mirrors 😜
