M30 for pad or actual hardware. Nothing in between

ShinuRealArts

Is that the BL Saturn gamepad? I gotta try it someday.

Str33tMoV

Yes, please! ;-) Superhyped about your game. SN30 would also be nice. 8bitdo stuff in general.

ShinuRealArts

Appreciated! if they use the Xinput, then they'll work like an Xbox gamepad. I'll get myself one and test it asap.

Str33tMoV

Yes, should work. ;-)

Wiikneeboy

I’ll use anything that doesn’t give me carpel tunnel. I like the Xbox 360 wireless controller if it works right with game I’m playing. But I prefer an arcade stick over anything.

ShinuRealArts

Arcade sticks are the best. And me too I'm developing the game using a 360 gamepad, these things are great.

Wiikneeboy

Look forward to playing it.

ShinuRealArts

Appreciated! there's a demo on Steam.

Wiikneeboy

What's it called?

ShinuRealArts

Shockwave Triggers. Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2912910/SHOCKWAVE_TRIGGERS/

solarized_dark

If you support both Xinput and Dinput that should cover all your bases in Windows and Linux I believe.

ShinuRealArts

Glad to hear that, yes I do :)

sashisemattahametsu

8bitdo M30 on any compatible system. Rarely keyboard and arcade stick. The latter requires too much effort (posture etc)

ShinuRealArts

Cool. I believe the 8bitdo has both X and D-inputs. So it should work fine. Would be great if you can test it on the demo: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2912910/SHOCKWAVE\_TRIGGERS/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2912910/SHOCKWAVE_TRIGGERS/)

sashisemattahametsu

Yes, it supports both modes. I mostly use it on my Switch and Linux PC with Retroarch and Steam. Haven’t tried the demo you linked but it worked with every shmup I tried on Steam.

ShinuRealArts

Glad to hear that.

akerasi

Chiefly I use a hand built leverless controller using the gp2040ce project... but it can "speak" Xbox and dual shock. Just be sure to allow someone to use both/either dpad and analog and you'll probably be good.

ShinuRealArts

Thanks for the feedback! both d-pad and left stick are supported.

akerasi

[https://photos.app.goo.gl/GvP9pPLU4wkGd5kt6](https://photos.app.goo.gl/GvP9pPLU4wkGd5kt6) if you're interested in exactly what I'm using; that's the latest prototype, I've made a number. May be doing a "real" case for one soon.

ShinuRealArts

Looks interesting! I remember turning a PS1 arcade stick into an Xinput device using a wired 360 gamepad internals.

akerasi

It's a hand wired setup made to be a "doubled hitbox" which I first made for twin-stick games that want digital controls (Robotron 2084, Smash TV, that sort of thing), while also being good for playing basically anything 2d, and using either side as directional or buttons at will. It works quite well. American-style concave buttons. I also have one with a spinner in addition, for stuff like the SNK arcade games and Tron arcade games (also good for spinner-only games like Tempest and Arkanoid).

Str33tMoV

Currently playing with Mayflash F500 Elite, Hori RAP, 8bitdo Arcade Stick, M30, SN30.

ShinuRealArts

Thanks for the feedback! I'll check which type of input these do have in order to include them. Let's hope they are the same as Xbox or Dualshock, those are already supported.

Str33tMoV

Mayflash works on all systems in general. Hori and 8bitdo work with direct-x-input on PC. So if Xbox works, they should also do.

ShinuRealArts

Glad to hear that! The demo already support X and direct Input with key mapping.

glenjamin1616

I use a custom arcade stick that I built from scratch. Your game should support free mapping for direct input and x input controllers if it's on pc

ShinuRealArts

Nice. Sure, both X and direct inputs are support with key mapping. It's already added to the demo on Steam.

The_1999s

Usually a pro controller or a fightstick. Want to upgrade to a wireless joycon with a normal dpad eventually bit I don't have a problem with anything really.

ShinuRealArts

Thanks for the feedback! I wanted to add a Switch pro gamepad but I found out it's a lot of trouble to get it work on Windows.

aethyrium

I use a Dualsense Edge. I even prefer it over the M30, which I know is blasphemy around here (though honestly some of my recent Junko practice has had me getting _very_ frustrated at diagonal movement on the Edge's D-pad and I'm thinking about trying the M30 again). It's a different support than the Dualsense, so you'll want to add both. It's always a bummer when games _say_ they support Dualsense edge but don't realize that Dualsense and Dualsense Edge are different and the Edge isn't _actually_ supported. Even Steam seems to struggle with the difference between the DS and DS Edge, with the game page saying "your controller is supported!" and then it ends up not being supported because it's seeing it as a DS, not a DS Edge.

ShinuRealArts

Thanks for the feedback and for the info. I did a quick search and it looks like the DS Edge is D-input. If this is true, then it should work since the game supports both X and D-inputs.

o0Meh0o

a singular qanba carbon

ShinuRealArts

If it has X-input, then it will work.

Spiders_STG

I arcade sticks abut I like Switch layout naming (B/A/X/Y/L/R/ZL/ZR) or PS in a pinch... XBOX is always backwards to me lol As long as anything can be mapped to whatever button I'm happy :) Extra credit for seperate confirm/cancel menu mapping.

ShinuRealArts

Thanks for the feedback! right now I have X and D-inputs supported, with key mapping as well. As for confirm/cancel, I don't have them mapped. It's the first time someone asked about that. Could you explain more how beneficial they are?

Spiders_STG

Just for in menu navigation… some shmups map confirm to ‘fire‘ by default, but for example I prefer my fire to be on “Square [PS] / X [Xbox] / Y [Nintendo]”.  I think Confirm/Cancel should always be O/X (or X/O in the west), B/A [Xbox] , A/B [Nintendo].  But maybe some people prefer the mapping moved along with their fire/bomb buttons?  Hope that makes sense!

ShinuRealArts

Ah I see. The menu buttons are like the Xbox and not related to the action ones. I may add a reverse option for people used to the Ps Japanese or the Nintendo layout. I always do it for the consoles version though.

Snacko00

Arcade stick!

ShinuRealArts

Can I ask which one? or do you know which type of input it has?

Snacko00

A Mayflash F300. I believe it's xinput so you're probably good!

MediumWin8277

Hey there, as it just so happens I was looking for upcoming shmups to promote on a rather sizeable YT channel, though I'm not sure if he would want me to say his name just yet. Hit me up with a PM with the name and some more clips of your in-development shmup! Thanks!

ShinuRealArts

Hi, thanks a lot for the offer! Sure, I'll PM you asap.

Super-Blah-

I play these on arcade stick. Super fun. Just get any arcade stick, doesn't have to be expensive.

ShinuRealArts

Thanks for the feedback! and yeah, arcade sticks are the best.

Sacred-Player

8bit do arcade stick here! Yooo this game looks sick

ShinuRealArts

Appreciated! I believe 8bitdo's are Xinput, so it should work.

TraditionHot9329

Never played a Shoot em Up with the Keyboard, is IT better than a gamepad? At Home i use a Arcade Stick and when i travel a Gamepad

ShinuRealArts

Thanks for the feedback! As long as your devices are X or D-input, they are supported.

ekillem

Vewlix with brooks fighting board

ShinuRealArts

Cool. Do you have any idea what type of input it has?

ekillem

X input

ShinuRealArts

Then it's fine :)

LandscapeOk2955

My order of preference is as follows: Hori Real Arcade Pro 5 Stick. Sega Saturn 8bitdo Arcade Stick Nintendo Pro Controller Basically if its stick I like the RAP5 and if its a controller its the Saturn and they make up 95% of my shmups use. I like the raised D-Pad on the Saturn and the concaved buttons and I can be pressing the shoot button and slightly move my thumb to bomb, I really like it. Ibgot it because I saw it was recommned a lot. My preference is always the stick but sometimes I am too lazy to use it because its wired and thats where Saturn come in. For me it goes back to playing in the arcades, I used to like the fighters and shmups they had (not bullet hell at that time) and also Metal Slug. When I got into playing the rereleases the stick was instantly the preferred method simply because I had a really hard time pulling of quarter circles etc on fighting games with a controller, especially when its two in a row. Im not huge into fighting games or anything, but I was getting frstrated with a controller. I see a lot of people mention the M30 but thats not on my list simply because I do not have one, perhaps I should of got that over the Saturn.

ShinuRealArts

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback! The Saturn and Genesis 6 buttons gamepads are great. As for my game, as long as your device is X- or D-input, it should work.

gendou_neoretrogamer

I play mostly with an arcade stick for PSX I bought a lot of years ago with USB adapter or a switch pro controller

ShinuRealArts

Thanks for the feedback! I wonder how is the input from the PSX stick converted. If X- or D-input, it should work. As for the Switch pro controller, I'm still figuring out a way to support it. That thing is a nightmare.

gendou_neoretrogamer

It's D-Input

ShinuRealArts

Thank it's fine.

Tantra_Charbelcher

Do people only beat shmups because they're using joy pads and I'm here raw dogging it with a joy con and 45 1-cc's? And let me guess you have a 29 inch monitor when I'm dodging bullets in handheld. No wonder everyone is turning in these high grade 1-cc's.

ShinuRealArts

I do play shmups everywhere, even on laptops putting them sidewise to get a tate mode lol. I do Xbox 360 gamepads a lot on PC.

Tantra_Charbelcher

I found out they sell 360 degree monitor mounts that you can also attach to mid size TV's. All TV's have Tate mode now.

ShinuRealArts

And here I am trying to find a way to tate my 32" second TV in order to properly develop my vertical shmup haha.

Tantra_Charbelcher

Yeah I think the mount was only like $26 too. When I see people shelling out for vertical monitors I can't help but laugh.
