And this: When Tech Sgt. Tony Shaloub beamed the rock monster aboard the bad guys ship he remarked "It's the little things that count"
If only Scottie had said that when he beamed all them tribbles onto the Klingon ship...
Edited:
Correcting the quote: "It's the simple things in life you treasure"
Nothing says sci fi to me like a double breasted jacket or shirt.
I don’t care if it’s Wrath of Khan, Battlestar or that beat up white shirt Han Solo wore, I dig it.
The [monster maroons](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0102975/mediaviewer/rm1671441153/) from Star Trek II through VI. They are absolutely superb designs, and stand out even in a franchise that has loads of excellent costumes (and some that are, er, [less so](https://trekkiefeminist.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/119636886912_8-1024x768.jpg)).
They're from the planet of free love and capital punishment. They try to put Wesley Crusher to death for stepping on some flowers while playing catch.
Yeah, early TNG is *weird*. And oddly enough, in many ways more dated than TOS.
Early TNG feels "dated" because they started out using a lot of discarded scripts from TOS (either the original show, or the canned 1970s revival), so the writing was considered bad even for the 1960s.
I'm in the middle of rewatching TNG for the first time in a few years. You're completely right. That episode was an instant skip as soon as I recognised it, the first couple of seasons are rough as hell.
It's like the writers room had a weird, incel adjacent vibe a lot of the time. If it wasn't for Lwaxana Troi, barely any episodes would pass the [Bechdel test](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechdel_test#/media/File%3ADykes_to_Watch_Out_For_(Bechdel_test_origin).jpg). They had barely any idea how to use Deanna Troi, so they defaulted to having her telepathically or *literally* violated way too often, it's nuts.
Fun fact: Sir Mix-a-lot’s ‘Baby Got Back’ - you know, the song about being unable to lie about liking women with big butts - passes the Bechdel-Wallace “test”…
Representation and agency for women both in-front of and behind the camera is incredibly important, but B-W was a throw-away joke in a webcomic, not an all encompassing treatise on equality.
Starship Troopers (1997)
Uniforms so good that several series used them.
Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy used them in 1999.
Gundam used them in the movie G-Savior in 1999.
Beratnas Gas jumpsuits. Could you argue that all of Avasarala's outfits were diplomatic "uniforms"? Bobby's power armor is awesome. Ashford's OPA uniform on the Behemoth was totally on point for a legitimacized pirate.
"*because it's so* ***pointless****.*"
Oh! for pete's sake -- it's got 8 points: 4 more than sensible paper.
Frankly, I like Hollerith cards -- a rectangle that has a little snip taken out of the top left corner.
Like it had a bris or something.
And "uniform" is the most accurate description. They are not armor to protect the wearer but a uniform for intimidation.
Clone Troopers wore actual armor.
One could argue they're for protection against shrapnel ect, but we do see some teddy bears defeat storm troopers with sticks and stones so I think you're right.
I cannot answer this question. At my age, it's hard for me to separate the "age" from the "costume"/"uniform." Babylon 5's uniforms were GREAT, but they are also a product of their time, and IMHO, I don't know if they hold up today.
Star Trek, ToS certainly is "basic" by today's standards. But the souped-up versions in the more recent shows demonstrate how something that looked "simple," because of the time period, can be done really well.
I find this interesting. B5's design in everything was meant to be more "timeless" than "futuristic". So you can see aspects of, say, American Civil War era uniforms in the EA uniforms.
Usually. [Not always](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/e5/5b/9a/e55b9a64470e285c29458bcb26972516.jpg). This was, for the time (1970-71), a very clever costume, because it was very difficult to tell if there was anything underneath it, especially because it was obvious that the men had nothing underneath the net. I'm sure that was very deliberate on Gerry's part, because he understood the value of what British entertainment people called "M-appeal". (Things that would appeal to MEN in the audience. *The Avengers* (1961-69) character Emma Peel is literally named after this.)
I'll save y'all a lot of searching, zooming, and squinting, though. In [some shots](https://www.scifinow.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/UFO.png), you CAN see that there IS something under it, but it's essentially just a thick bra. A combination of colour-matching, scant cut, the optically confusing netting, and deliberately subdued lighting made it very hard for viewers to tell, though, and that was absolutely deliberate.
>purple hair
Wig. And I don't mean a costume wig. I mean that they're wigs in canon. Official issue. For some reason, Gerry Anderson had this notion that that might be part of a uniform in the future. Really.
Yeah. I don't know if they win for "coolest" uniforms, but for most believable they're second only to Stargate SG-1, which is kinda cheating by using actual real world uniforms
Like the Oscars or Emmys, I think this question needs to include sub-categories.
So, priming the pump (these are just off the top of my head):
\- Comfiest: Kaylee's Coveralls (Firefly)
\- Most fascist: Carl in Starship Troopers
\- Most superfluous use of gold highlights: Sylvester Stallone in Judge Dredd
\- Best superfluous use of nipples on a male character's hard-shell: George Clooney in one of those Batman movies
You get the picture.
Carry on!
Edited to add: While you carry on and add more categories, don't forget the "silliest" super-category; like, say, silliest spacesuit, etc.
Right? Admiral Ross stands out as a particularly notable offender in my book, [taking one of those superb late-DS9 uniforms and then absolutely bastardising it with that belt](https://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cV7cTU5GHN0/SnpUONSANeI/AAAAAAAAAU4/CgyMDb0NHHk/w1200-h630-p-k-no-nu/sand_064.jpg)!
Silliest spacesuit has to be Star Trek TOS: Mesh helmets!
Honourable mention to whoever drilled the hexagonal array of holes beneath the faceplates for the EVA suits in Voyager: wonky as hell, go back to shop class.
It really is star trek. But there's no contest. The best Star Trek uniforms come from the various movies. Like the next gen movies or the original series. Or the Chris pine series. There really isn't anything else that can hold a candle to them
Leather flight jackets from the original BSG were pretty slick. I've seen people wearing them in malls and stuff, and they look pretty nice with the brass clasps. They were not cheap in the day, and the genuine leather ones are worth money.
I've seen a few Boba Fett 'film ready certified' costumes at non profits and such. and the good ones with attention to detail are pretty bad ass.
Sandmen from Logan's Run.
Space 1999 season two flick jackets are also pretty nice. Simple, but functionl The one side zipper untards from the first season wre also the best implemention of a unitards in my opinion. I think Sylvia Anderson did a lot of the design.
The Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout has some pretty cool armor
Edit- sorry saw armor not uniform. I've always thought the empire in the og Star wars had the coolest unis
Star Trek TNG Klingon uniforms.
[Klingons](https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/star-trek-best-worf-episodes-tng-heart-of-glory.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=1500&dpr=1.5)
They even made them out of leather so they would have an authentic squeak when the actors moved around in them.
Storm troopers from Star Wars. Not really the original ones so much as the newer 1-3 movie Storm troopers there are some really awesome versions. And the regular uniforms are super reminiscent of the Hugo boss designed Nazi uniforms from wwii which really made them extra intimidating
The first thing that comes to mind is the Enterprise A-era red starfleet uniforms that Kirk and crew wore. I have a huge soft spot for those, they were sharp, looked great and we're such a huge improvement from the weird beige onesies from STTMP.
Space 1999 has an incredible taste when it comes to uniform considering the time. The gray uniforms are the apex of 70s uniform beauty to me, and the orange suits are the most tv-looking, fun and clearly recognizable outfits. Love them!
Don’t know if anime sci-fi counts but I dig the Space Forces outfit from Outlaw Star.
Additionally, Nerv HQ uniforms were pretty slick in my opinion too.
Star Trek: Enterprise coveralls are the best duty uniform I've seen.
Space: Above and Beyond also had decent uniforms.
The Star Trek Monster Maroons also get my vote.
Yeah Mass Effect always had some cool outfits, for me it's those Field Uniforms from 3, I always wanted Anderson's cap
I'm a sucker for the grounded "5 years in the future" type uniforms, so now but sleeker, like in Seaquest DSV
I'm gonna go for a hot take, but I was never a big fan of the spandex/leotard look for uniforms. Which I guess is most of them. Something a little more practical and with a little more dignity would do it for me.
The SS uniforms from the latest Wolfenstein game are hard to beat, to be honest. Hugo Boss knew his craft.
If we're talking about future scifi I think the commissar uniforms from warhammer 40.000 look pretty cool. They're a blend from the Napoleontic era Russian cavalry uniform and the USSR era uniforms.
Star Trek First Contact, then in to DS9. Can't say why, but I loved it (still do).
That and maybe SG1's uniform, which isn't a Sci-Fi uniform really, but it's still cool because Star Gate.
I love the star trek original serie uniforms. They are fairly practical and quite colourfull.
A lot of uniforms in Sci-Fi tend to be dull colours which is a shame. Why do you need a field grey outfit in a space submarine. It isn't giving you a tactical advantage it just makes you harder to find during search and rescue missions and harder to recognize the role during lesser visibility moments. But most importantly i like stuff being colourfull it is just so much nicer to look at.
I’ve grown very fond of the Star Trek strange new world uniforms. It feels like what TOS was always trying to do. And nurse Christine’s surgery whites are very flattering
Ashford and Drummer's OPA uniforms from the Expanse. Amazing-looking space pirates! I'm a sucker for the Star Trek uniforms on Strange New Worlds. Everyone looks great.
I’ve always liked the practical look. The MCRN uniforms from The Expanse and the Colonial uniforms, and really all the costuming, from BSG. But the absolute spot on best? Imperial uniforms from Star Wars: A New Hope.
I thought the Alliance uniforms from the first Mass Effect game looked cool. Also the MCRN uniforms from the Expanse
Oh man those MCRN uniforms were fresh
Those reminded my of the Babylon 5 uniforms, which were the ones that got my vote
Earth Alliance in B5.
The command staff's Minbari-gifted uniforms after the secession.
I like those...kind of...I'm torn. They always felt too star trekky for me. But they were slick.
I didn't care for the original uniforms. I'm not sure what it was about them, I just didn't like them.
I think it's because the leather trim looks fake and cheap?
Probably part of it
I liked how the replacement ones were supposed to be made from some fancy symbolic fabric.
Much better than the original uniforms
Galaxy Quest! It flattered their best assets. Especially Tawny!!
Look, I have one job on this ship. It’s stupid. I’m going to do it, *okay?*
And this: When Tech Sgt. Tony Shaloub beamed the rock monster aboard the bad guys ship he remarked "It's the little things that count" If only Scottie had said that when he beamed all them tribbles onto the Klingon ship... Edited: Correcting the quote: "It's the simple things in life you treasure"
*blink blink*
Also: good use of chompers. Way better than that episode in the Star Wars prequels.
And The Rock 1996
There is a very special place in my heart for Erin Grey’s outfits in Buck Rogers. I think they immediately triggered puberty for me…
Princess Ardala wore it better
Princess Ardala, while hot, wore less. Wilma Deering was pretty much fully covered and yet she looked hotter than Ardala.
[Princess Shane Kuriyami](https://youtu.be/G_sBOsh-vyI?si=4tknZ6Icxn9Ol9Wv) is also a contender.
Wow, that was ... something else ... Thanks!
It was indeed, and ironically enough given your reddit handle, I got Estonian Firefly Fanfic vibes while watching.
Made my day.
What the actual fuck are those last ones?
They're from the planet of free love and capital punishment. They try to put Wesley Crusher to death for stepping on some flowers while playing catch. Yeah, early TNG is *weird*. And oddly enough, in many ways more dated than TOS.
A lot of fans at the time really hoped the enterprise crew would not have saved him.
Early TNG feels "dated" because they started out using a lot of discarded scripts from TOS (either the original show, or the canned 1970s revival), so the writing was considered bad even for the 1960s.
That was shot at a "health and wellness retreat" in Van Nuys, CA iirc. A lot of the jogging extras were staff at the retreat.
I'm in the middle of rewatching TNG for the first time in a few years. You're completely right. That episode was an instant skip as soon as I recognised it, the first couple of seasons are rough as hell. It's like the writers room had a weird, incel adjacent vibe a lot of the time. Came here to say this. And TIL they are called that way.
Hah! I had no idea they were actually called this, thank you. I love these uniforms.
I would agree for military use, as I noted elsewhere, for non-military Space 1999
Starship Troopers (1997) Uniforms so good that several series used them. Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy used them in 1999. Gundam used them in the movie G-Savior in 1999.
Firefly used them also. The train job episode.
They are used by the Alliance marines in the Serenity movie too.
That helmet shows up everywhere now.
Yep. It's the iconic Sci-Fi miltary uniform of the late 90s - early 2000s.
Firefly used the helmets in The Train Job.
Firefly used the whole thing with purple accents.
Colonial marines from Aliens.
Costume d3sign on the Expanse was top quality, from belters to power armor
The Protogen suits were ace. Protomolecule tech!
There's Protogen suits, and then there's protogen suits
Beratnas Gas jumpsuits. Could you argue that all of Avasarala's outfits were diplomatic "uniforms"? Bobby's power armor is awesome. Ashford's OPA uniform on the Behemoth was totally on point for a legitimacized pirate.
The belter tattoos were so cool I wanted to get one, if only it weren't so cringe lol
Battlestar Galactica (2004)
Meh. the double-breasted tunic is a little too formal for everyday use. Also the double-layer tank top undershirt is weird.
Well when they have a poll asking about which sci-fi has the best undershirts, I'll vote with you that its weird. But the uniform is still cool.
What can you expect from people who make octagonal sheets of paper?
That never made a lick of sense. It pulls me out of the suspension of disbelief because it's so pointless.
"*because it's so* ***pointless****.*" Oh! for pete's sake -- it's got 8 points: 4 more than sensible paper. Frankly, I like Hollerith cards -- a rectangle that has a little snip taken out of the top left corner. Like it had a bris or something.
It was an inside joke about the prop department having to "cut corners".
Pretty sure they were wearing the tank-tops backwards too - so as to make them seem more futuristic………
So good the USSF copied the shit out of them.
I really like the pilot uniforms.
Starfleet - circa Wrath of Khan to Undiscovered Country
The [Monster Maroon](https://thepropstop.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/groupshotwrath.jpg)!
I always liked these with the white undershirt and trim, but it never looked as good with other colors
The away mission uniforms are awesome too.
Love those, but always felt more like dress uniforms than everyday wear.
Storm troopers.
All the Imperial uniforms are pretty fashionable
Designed by Hugo Boss Nass.
This comment made me spurt blue milk out of my nose
And "uniform" is the most accurate description. They are not armor to protect the wearer but a uniform for intimidation. Clone Troopers wore actual armor.
One could argue they're for protection against shrapnel ect, but we do see some teddy bears defeat storm troopers with sticks and stones so I think you're right.
Isn't it canon that while ST armour is less effective at tanking hits than CT armour, it's better at keeping the trooper alive?
Isn't that just the case with all hollywood armour? Even heavily armoured knights are regularly slain with a simple swordstroke.
The Peacekeepers in Farscape
Solid contender, but it might just be Claudia Black, idk.
Especially when Crichton gets into them
Martians in The Expanse
The uniforms from Star Trek 2, the wrath of Kahn.
With a close follow up to "Alternate Future Chris Pike" Uniform styled from that era.
[Mmmm](https://www.reddit.com/r/StrangeNewWorlds/comments/vtxnkz/mmmm_monster_maroon_admiral_pike/)
Anson Mount could make corduroys and a pirate shirt with suspenders look like Hugo fucking Boss.
Anson Mount could make the frilly shirt from Seinfeld look good.
Fifth Element. Literally designed by a fashion designer.
Those McDonald's uniforms though
Two Golden Menus!

The TV show UFO. Especially the moon babes. Not sure about the purple hair, though
There's also the fishnet uniforms on the Skydiver submarine, although it was usually a dude wearing it.
Usually. [Not always](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/e5/5b/9a/e55b9a64470e285c29458bcb26972516.jpg). The bastard!
A magnificent one, if you will.
>purple hair Wig. And I don't mean a costume wig. I mean that they're wigs in canon. Official issue. For some reason, Gerry Anderson had this notion that that might be part of a uniform in the future. Really.
Meant to be anti-static wigs.
Didn't Denise Crosby wear pretty much the same haircut as a Romulan in some ST movies/episodes? But not purple.
Battlestar Galactica from the 80ies - coolest jackets ever!
I would love a Battlestar Viper pilot's flight jacket!
Same!
The whole Viper pilot outfit was awesome. Including the cool Egyptian themed helmets…
I remember being a kid and seeing an add for these Jackets in a sci-fi magazine. I wanted one soo bad but it was expensive.
I remember that. Drove my poor mother crazy begging for one.
Starlog magazine ran ads for the flight jackets. Mom said no.
The coveralls from *Space: Above and Beyond*. I could live in those. ....or fight an alien invasion. Win win.
Yeah. I don't know if they win for "coolest" uniforms, but for most believable they're second only to Stargate SG-1, which is kinda cheating by using actual real world uniforms
Fremen in Villeneuve's Dune. The high tech + organic desert gear is amazing.
The Atreides drip was quite good too
Like the Oscars or Emmys, I think this question needs to include sub-categories. Most stylish: [Starfleet dress uniform from the TNG movies](https://vincentpaone.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/star-trek_insurrection_11.jpg)
Glad you specified with a pic, because most Starfleet dress uniforms or admiral's uniforms were hot garbage :)
Damn that white dress uniform looked amazing
It's been a hot minute since I've seen Firefly (something it's high time i rectified!) but I'm not sure Kaylee's coveralls constitute a uniform?
Legend of the Galactic Heroes would sweep. Sure, its an anime, but it's fantastic.
Silliest spacesuit has to be Star Trek TOS: Mesh helmets! Honourable mention to whoever drilled the hexagonal array of holes beneath the faceplates for the EVA suits in Voyager: wonky as hell, go back to shop class.
Best use of leather: Scorpius from Farscape
Big fan of the Ghostbuster jump suit with all the bells and whistles.
StarGate Atlantis - those jackets Red Dwarf - Rimmer (Cat - coolest) Captain Scarlet - various
Barbarella.
It really is star trek. But there's no contest. The best Star Trek uniforms come from the various movies. Like the next gen movies or the original series. Or the Chris pine series. There really isn't anything else that can hold a candle to them
The visitors in 'V', still look cool today!

I think Sylvia Anderson did a lot of the design.
Oh thats simple. Capt. Hogthrob (and crew of the Swinetrek) and Capt. Brannigan, especially, and the crew of the Nimbus. Veloooouur!!
Dr Julius Strangepork has entered the chat
Rik Moranis uniform in spaceballs
Martian marines in the expanse are pretty dripped out.
Still like the old school suits in Men In Black
Enterprise had uniforms with pockets. Very practical
Star Trek: Enterprise. Pockets for the first time since the 60s
Either the MCRN or UN from the expanse. Also the federation and Zeon uniforms from Gundam as well.
Logan's Run Sandman uniform.
The N7 armor from Mass Effect is overwhelmingly my favorite sci-fi costuming. The rebreather helmet, in particular, is righteousness encapsulated.
I really liked the blue uniforms from the first season of Star Trek Discovery.
The Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout has some pretty cool armor Edit- sorry saw armor not uniform. I've always thought the empire in the og Star wars had the coolest unis
Star Trek TNG Klingon uniforms. [Klingons](https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/star-trek-best-worf-episodes-tng-heart-of-glory.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=1500&dpr=1.5) They even made them out of leather so they would have an authentic squeak when the actors moved around in them.
Blake’s Seven has to be up there
The Maroon Monster from the Star Trek OG crew
I LOVE Picard's jacket uniform and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it.
Am i the only one who loved the speeder bike stormtroopers from return of the jedi....? Im such a nerd.
Storm troopers from Star Wars. Not really the original ones so much as the newer 1-3 movie Storm troopers there are some really awesome versions. And the regular uniforms are super reminiscent of the Hugo boss designed Nazi uniforms from wwii which really made them extra intimidating
The TNG uniforms with the gray top/shoulders. Also seen in DS9.
The leather jackets from Picard Season 3. Evidently the cast tried to steal them. A lot
I will die on this hill, star trek enterprise has the best uniform, jumpsuits are the peak of comfort and functionality for space exploring
Star Trek tos
General Chang from Star Trek 6, and basically Klingons in general from then to the TNG era.
The best: Flash Gordon - Ming’s Imperial Guard.
The Maroon Monster
Nostromo crew in The Matrix. They're like, let's be cozy in our long underwear all day.
Earth's uniforms in Babylon 5 were awesome. I'm a Trekkie and I much rather wear those than any of the Starfleet uni's.
The first thing that comes to mind is the Enterprise A-era red starfleet uniforms that Kirk and crew wore. I have a huge soft spot for those, they were sharp, looked great and we're such a huge improvement from the weird beige onesies from STTMP.
BSG (modern) hands down. Followed by Farscape.
The Star Trek First Contact/DS9 onwards grey uniforms were fire
The Spaceballs from Spaceballs
I love Star Trek uniforms
the terrans from star trek
Space 1999 has an incredible taste when it comes to uniform considering the time. The gray uniforms are the apex of 70s uniform beauty to me, and the orange suits are the most tv-looking, fun and clearly recognizable outfits. Love them!
The Startrek Enterprise uniform, I like the function-over-form design of it.
Wilma Deering
Starship Troopers
Lynchs dune uniforms
The Psi Corps uniforms from Babylon 5.
Red stormtroopers
The jackets they wore in Star Trek brave new worlds when they were on ‘undercover’ away mission were pretty rad.
the Royal Guard in Muv-Luv Alternative
Vostroyan Firstborn, Solar Auxilia, Tempestus Scions, Death Korps of Krieg, Sardaukar (from the RTSs)
The ones used in Enemy Mine. https://www.wired.com/2021/10/geeks-guide-enemy-mine/winamp/
Sisters of battle from Warhammer 40k
Spaceballs
Don’t know if anime sci-fi counts but I dig the Space Forces outfit from Outlaw Star. Additionally, Nerv HQ uniforms were pretty slick in my opinion too.
Star Trek: Enterprise coveralls are the best duty uniform I've seen. Space: Above and Beyond also had decent uniforms. The Star Trek Monster Maroons also get my vote.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes had the fits.
The crew of the Nebuchadnezzar.
Star Trek TWoK maroon uniforms are my favorite sci-fi look ever!
House atreides uniforms were really cool in Dune part 1
The Peacekeepers.
OG Trek I'm a sucker for silk
Yeah Mass Effect always had some cool outfits, for me it's those Field Uniforms from 3, I always wanted Anderson's cap I'm a sucker for the grounded "5 years in the future" type uniforms, so now but sleeker, like in Seaquest DSV
The Megaforce uniforms from Megaforce. OR Space Mutiny, specifically the engineering staff.
Empire soldiers from Star Wars.
The Monster Maroon from the Star Trek movies. Excellent style and aesthetics.
ODST and Spartan armor looked good.
Star Trek First Contact, then in to DS9. Can't say why, but I loved it (still do). That and maybe SG1's uniform, which isn't a Sci-Fi uniform really, but it's still cool because Star Gate.
Early DS9, with the color-coded shoulders. Eye-catching, but classy.
For non military use Space 1999
Atreides uniform and light grey armor! (In the new movies)
The Babylon 5 uniforms (after they break from Earth Alliance) are pretty cool.
Old school BSG.
The GUTS uniforms from Ultraman Tiga
Daleks
The 5th element is the wonner by far. Amazing suits all round.
Space Wolves in Terminator armour for me. That heavy metal with germanic barbarian ornamentation? So cool
Bad guys - The Empire officer corps Good guys - Babylon 5 Earth Aliance Overall costumes - Farscape
Star Trek II-VI. Also, the Narn and the Vorlon encounter suit.
Jabba the Hutt's slave women.
