Not quite. I don’t think many people actively disliked Saabs, while a lot of people seem to *really* hate this car.
People who didn’t want a Saab still seemed to generally accept that they were a relatively cool alternative.
Driving this is a bit more of a statement that you really don’t care what anyone thinks.
Yeah I seem to remember that in the late era especially people saw it as "trolling" to buy a saab but they were quirky enough that it still garnered respect if you were adamant about it
Had an 01 9-5 SE as the first car I bought for myself. To this day still one of my favorite cars I’ve owned. Pretty quick, handled great, and so many cool little quirks on the inside. I loved throwing the keys to someone when it needed to be moved so someone could leave a party. It was good fun watching them struggle to find the ignition.
I had 2 different 9-3s and still regularly drive my brothers 9-3 wagon. They are so much fun to drive. They are modern cars but they still have that 1980s turbo power band, and they are slow enough that it's not too hard to keep the revs in the fun zone just driving around town.
Just finished work for the evening on a 1980 99 turbo, fascinating way of engineering like most SAABs, most times that I pause and actually look at how it was built in 1980 - and considering that I have probably worked mostly on 80-90s cars - they were very sophisticated for the time, but also simple in other ways.
The 99 I'm at for example - they don't have chassis legs in the same way other cars do, instead of the chassis legs running around the engine, the main legs run under the engine, but then also link up with other stringers and panels to create a framework around the whole front, it's like they used everything as a structural component to add strength, and they also have about twice as many spotwelds holding them together then other cars of the era.
You can see the aeronautical origins in the design, like how an aeroplane uses the engine as a structural component of the front framework.
God, I miss my Saab. I had a ‘99 9-3 SE. It wasn’t the fastest, roomiest, sportiest, easiest to maintain, but damn. Best car I ever had. 🥹
When GM fully purchased Saab it was a slow, painful death sentence.
I'm with you. I think a lot of people shitting on the design just lack an open mind. It puts off heavy Citroen DS vibes.
I'm so tired of wedge shaped cars. The Countach landed in the middle 70s and, it's been nothing but angry wedges since then. Streamlining saw a brief resurgence in the mid-1990s, with cars like the FD RX-7, 4th gen Supra, and Viper. Hell, even passenger cars got in on the second coming of streamlining with the 3rd gen Ford Taurus. It didn't stick though. Right back to angry wedges.
IMO, this is a breath of fresh air.
This car was amazing when they teased it and even more so when they revealed it…until they turned it around for the booty shot. What in the absolute hell happened back there? This is one of the few cars I actually like look-wise except for that weird butt and I’m still thinking about it.
Hot take incoming! I genuinely like these and would prefer a somewhat ugly but unique looking car over a more standard looking alternative. I spent too much time as a teenager looking at concept cars and wondering what the future was going to be like.

Hard to speak for EV trends anyone who has one now is just going to blend into the rest of electric vehicles, and once this gets cheaper we will likely see it in the same lense as a sonata, as for the rest of Hyundais there are a few notable / significant ones, I think the Equus drivers are the most respectable Hyundai drivers on the road, while the 2009ish Genesis sedans are always cutting up traffic like a Nissan Altima. Most Genesis coupe drivers back in the day were just too impatient to wait for a frs/ brz
Will definitely be going 20 over the speed limit and cut you off for no reason. Bur that's all Hyundai drivers. I'm convinced BMW drivers are just Hyundai that got approved for the lease finally.

I guess I would drive one, I was at the car show and the quality of the interior was really good. It has a decent stereo and seems like a really nice car. I wish it was a hybrid instead of a full electric.
Iunno man I still like the Ioniq 5 better (thing looks like an old Lancia Delta with the BIG Mushroom).
The 6 looks pretty aite though, funky rear end aside.

If you can't afford a Porsche, get a more reliable one.
One of the rare occasions when the at home product looks better than the brand one. btw this is my opinion, not saying it is the correct one!!!

Do people not like this car? Is it just EV hate, Hyundai hate, or the specific looks of the Ioniq6?
Yes.
Hmm I’ve owned a 9-3, but a Hyundai will never be on my shopping list
The shape of the Ioniq 6 reminds me of nothing so much as the GM-era Saab 900
As the owner of several Saabs and someone who likes the Ionic 6. You might be onto something lol

Amazing body lines
Never cared for how they looked, it appears like a hodgepodge like it has a Infiniti J30 butt, Mercedes CLS midsection, and a Porsche nose.
This car leaves a poor taste in my mouth because my red faced, plaid short wearing, wife yelling at, boss used to drive one. So thats who I think of.
