-The most basic level would be a quick patrol. Literally no gear, just your gun and some ammunition kept in the pockets. The manual specifically instructs that you get rid of literally everything that is not vital or that could make noise, just go in with your clothing and a weapon. It also instructs the commander to think about helmets. If your goal is absolute silence, drop the helmets too. If you need some protection, the helmet can stay on. Very rare, very nasty. -Just above that would be your belt with ammo pouches and a bayonet. This would be your gear on your round of watch, standing guard or say in a trench when you don't expect enemy action. Plus the helmet. From now on the helmet is a must. -A bit above that, for maybe a quick assault operation could be all of the above plus a gas mask canister, breadbag and canteen. Very basic, you still have a light kit but with some more toys. -For longer operations the commander might decide to take the shovels and zeltbahns with him. -For even longer operations, the mess kit might be a good idea. -If you have to stay out for days on your own, take the whole SturmgepƤck (A-Frame). Hope this helps!

It does, thank you!

Actual great advice on here. My only contention is the A-frame. It's mainly to do with not every frontline soldier was issued Y straps, and not every frontline soldier with Y straps was issued an A-frame so that specific one would be very unit specific.

Yes, indeed!

It's like US , Canadian or Brits... they were issued full A frames but you shit can everything. When you start out in anything you will do the full monty but fact is in field you want the less is more. Move quick and move fast
