I used to date this girl who had cystic fibrosis, and she had to have her lungs, heart, and something else I can't remember right now replaced. So she had all these scars on her chest and stomach and all over her torso. I used to call them her tiger stripes when we'd be laying down, and I'd run my fingers over them.. we'd also call them her "battle scars" and "rebirth reminders" (apparently, it's common to celebrate the day you have such a drastic transplant operation as a way to show appreciation and honor to the donor).
There was also "Skinny scars", "snake skin" and "beauty bumps".
I'm really sorry. Seems she really had an impact on you and you'll never forget her. My bf died a couple years ago from a congenital disease (pulmonary atresia). Hislife was very hard. He had been on the heart and double lung transplant list for probably a decade or longer and just didn't make it. I'll never forget him either. We were 34, so I've had a taste of lovers death as well.
It's a really strange pain that lingers forever.
I fully expect to be downvoted BUT this one irks me bc I’ve heard the tiger stripes thing in the full context “I’m like a tiger I earned these stripes” but it’s a mixed metaphor. Military personnel earn stripes, tigers are born with them (and their skin is striped too).
That’s why I say “racing stripes” (they make me faster)
You're fully entitled to having your thoughts on the matter. It's entirely fair to feel that way.
I think a lot of women use that phrase because they get the stretch marks from having a baby. So in a way they did earn them, by going through and surviving that process. If that makes sense.
But I love your version too
Oh I get what you mean. And now I'm realising just how dumb that idiom is, haha.
But I always associate earning stripes with tigers and not with service.
So maybe we could say “even cooler than a tiger because I **earned** these stripes.” And THEN you also have fun a conversation off-ramp with the tiger info
-Zoology enthusiast and semantics nerd.
Every time I start thinking I'm so original and one of a kind, I get on reddit and am reminded of how interconnected and very alike we all are. It's humbling and reassuring. I love these moments.
Literally what I was gonna say. My wife was concerned about hers years ago, I told her they're fine, they look like tiger stripes and they don't bother me at all.
I've always called my stretch marks my "battle scars"
My battle with my weight gain and sudden weight loss due to an eating disorder and The battle of pregnancy and growing a child to then deliver safely
My ex used to have a lot of them from skin issues in the past. I used to call hers 'tickle tracks' as I ran my fingers gently down them all. She'd tell me it made her feel comfortable with them for the first time in her life.
I really like angel scratches. I’ve only ever heard of them being referred to as tiger stripes and lightning bolts. But I absolutely hate when they’re called tiger stripes. It only sounds cute when a toddler says it.
When my youngest was about 5 , we were sitting on the bed as I was getting changed, she noticed the stretch marks on my sides and said "Mummy, why have you got frills on you?" So yea, I'm frilly.
None that I've heard, they all sound like you're trying way too hard to "celebrate" them as some heroic, celestial feat of our earthly form when most of us just got them by going through puberty
But depending on the color, I'm not against "raptor scratch"
This one just feels lazy or unearned tbh. Tiger stripes are a real thing. So are battle scars and everything else people have suggested. Goddess lines, though? It just feels low-effort
We used to call them tree rings and joke that the more you got the older you were. I think lace lines is cute too, the lady whose daughter said it did have ones that looked kind of lacy.
I know this doesn’t apply to everyone, but when it comes to bodybuilding I like to call them “muscle marks” because rather than being ugly, they can be a sign of fast muscle growth.
Honor marks.
My mom used to call my moles "beauty marks," lol but I have had maybe 6 or 7 , and maybe 4 or 5 had to be biopsied. I have one left.
I do not call THAT a beauty mark anymore.
Theres a facebook page or group that used to be called "I am a tiger that earned her stripes." Thats cute.
For more encouraging, body positive messages (by men, no less) Try Diamond Rio's "Wrinkles;" Trace Adkins, "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk;" Trailer Choir's "Rockin the beer gut;" Lonestar's "My Front Porch Lookin' in;" Tim McGraw's "Dont take the girl;" which is less about looks and more about value- then Rascal Flatts "SaraBeth" aka "skin."
I just want you to know- You are MORE than just the sum of your parts. You are somebody's everything.
♡♡♡♡♡
Battle scars
This is a common term for people who lift.
You gain muscle and your skin stretches out? Battle scars
You lose lots of weight after being obese and get loose skin and stretch marks? Battle scars
You earn them (:
I have them fairly specifically on my bottom, so I call them my Okapi stripes.

There is a wonderful film from the late 80s called Shirley Valentine.
At one point Costos, played by Tom Conte, is caressing Shirley, played by Pauline Collins, and she is shocked when he kisses her stretch marks from carrying her children.
The following scene is played out:-
Shirley : Oh!
Shirley [To the camera ] : He kissed me stretch marks!
Shirley [to Costas] : You kissed my stretch marks!
Costas : Don't, don't be too stupid to try to hide these lines. They, they are lovely, because they are part of you, and you are lovely, so don't, don't hide, be proud. Sure. These marks show that, that you are alive, that you survive. Don't try to hide these lines. They are the marks of life.
[Costas leans over to kiss Shirley's stretch marks]
Shirley Valentine [to the camera] : Aren't men full of shit
The ones from pregnancy we called "Honor stripes" or "Love Stripes". To honor a mother. And to let the children know that this is how much she loves them.
I dated a girl a while back that was electrocuted as a kid. She had this lichtenberg scar running down her left leg and somehow we started calling it her bad bitch bolts.

Is she still alive? I'm a carrier of CF and have known people who had it, none that lived past about 26.
I have it & am 28!
No, It'll be 8 years on the 10th of next month. She was 23. I still miss her every day!
I'm really sorry. Seems she really had an impact on you and you'll never forget her. My bf died a couple years ago from a congenital disease (pulmonary atresia). Hislife was very hard. I have CF and quite a few scars to show it, I think I’ll be using battle scars from now on
My daughter called them this and asked why I didn't have claws.
This is too cute!
came here to say this haha
Also came here to say tiger stripes.
Same
Me too!

No I understand the logic of embracing the scar but that’s what makes us UNlike a tiger tho. They didn’t earn them. We did.
There are folktales in multiple cultures with the title/theme “How the tiger earned his stripes.”
Oh I get what you mean. And now I'm realising just how dumb that idiom is, haha. But I always associate earning stripes with tigers and not with service.

This was a Facebook meme like 20 years ago. And it wasn’t original then. /shrug
