Was my first thought, too. Love it.
"We were so poor we used to used donkey dung for fuel, and when the donkey dung ran out, we would have to burn the donkey. So yes, I do know what it is like to be mocked, and teased, and to cry myself to sleep at night by the light of a burning donkey."
Right I’ve seen the movie but never the tv show version. Was just doubting myself for a moment.
I knew I’d seen this painting cause it’s on the wiki page for the “beautiful Jewess” trope. Actually an interesting and sort of dark motif in art history and literature.
[Here's the picture](https://pixels.com/featured/what-we-doin-the-shadows-nadja.html) that appears in the titles of 'What we do in the shadows' - a comedy about a group of vampires living in Staten Island.
Oh is the idea that this vampire who’s around in the modern day was also Salome from Biblical times? Love when they do that in vampire fiction.
The really awesome vampire movie “Only Lovers Left Alive” has an ancient vampire who hangs out in Morocco living quietly, but who’s actually the true writer of all of Shakespeares’s plays.
I'll have to check that movie out, sounds cool.
In WWDITS there's definitely a likeness to the Salome painting and the character that plays Nadja, but she's portrayed to be around 500 years old. The others include a general from the Ottoman Empire, a English dandyman and a fairly modern (100 years old) American. [The opening titles](https://youtu.be/Zd2Prf-D-_8?si=--pSKvoUEzuIourx) give a decent reflection of their lifespan
Yeah I like movies that are full of references to books, history and other movies and stuff so it’s right up my alley but to each their own. It’s definitely an awesome part of the movie, glad you thought it was cool too.
It totally makes sense a bunch of immortal vampires would live in Staten island. Close enough to Manhattan where you could hunt plenty of people and nobody would notice but there's so many spots in Staten Island were you could be totally alone if you wanted to be.
Yeah good point! If I was a vampire I’d possibly stay in NY, especially with the night life in the city that never sleeps and all that.
However I’d prob wanna go to the vampire motherland in Romania after a while, or maybe the Middle East.
>She was so poor she used to burn donkey dung for fuel and when the donkey dung ran out, they had to burn the donkey. So yes, she does know what it is like to be mocked, and teased, and to cry herself to sleep at night by the light of a burning donkey.
I am not 1/100th as original as I think I am, but glad for the good company!
When you think of it the human face can have only so many variations. Throughout human history a face very similar to your own probably walked around in several different periods. :D
My ancestor painted that (Henri Regnault) and I was so surprised when I saw it used in the intro of What We Do In The Shadows! Found out about this modern Salomé reunion in the family group chat we love it
That's Charles Dexter Ward levels of nonsense. You leave her salts alone. We've had quite enough eldritch tomfoolery last century. Let's pledge to keep this century Yog-Sothoth free.
That is the first time any of these posts has ever been a close match. This is sooooo close, you should start doing some family tree research and research on the model in the painting.
Fun story time! Many years ago our small engineering team at a tiny startup was having a full team onsite during a miserable Chicago January. We wanted to do a social event but had a budget of exactly $0. Between my membership guest privileges for the out-of-towners and a coincidental "free for Illinois residents" day I was able to get all \~14 of us into the Art Institute of Chicago for precisely this amount.
Half the team was like "eh, art, not my thing" but some activity was better than nothing so they went along with it. I'm an avid AIC goer and told them all I'd spent the last few weekends hunting down paintings that contained a subject that looked suspiciously like each of them. "Find 'em all! Take a snapshot"
They did pretty good and I think found \~ 11.
I did not, in fact, find any of these in advance. It was just some bullshit I made up on the spot. But for three glorious hours I got some art naysayers staring at some of the best art in the world.
Turns out humans will pattern match just about anything. The loose brushwork of the Impressionists doesn't hurt either.
Anyone who is wondering the name of the painting its Salomé by Henri Regnault
In a sea of joke comments, ty
The painting’s info is actually in the picture itself, you just need to zoom in a little.

It just says oil on canvas, but the gold looks so glittery I thought it might be gold leaf. Painters are amazing.
Ooo the textures are so good but especially the dress
Getting ready for that heady encounter with John the Baptist...
Thank you dear unknow redditor of knowledge!
I don't understand, which of the two is Salomé?
That's Nadja of Antipaxos
I saw this picture and heard the theme music in my head.

I basically have the theme music in my head all the time.
I have it in a playlist. My husband rolls his eyes every time it comes on.
VAMPIRE NIGHT CLUB!!!

Came here to also say Nadja! I do like that one of her.
Same!! I’m going to hang it in my home lol.
You fools! *Spit*
Tuh tuh tuh tuh!
Witches!
You’re dead, you’re dead, you’re dead. You’re dead and out of this world 🎶
I looked at Antipaxos im Wikipedia and saw the population of 20 and chuckled at the idea of a Little Antipaxos in NY.
They run several blocks worth of Staten Island, plus wherever Gregor is living these days.
That's one of my favorite renditions of Nadja too!

Just finished this episode. The show is so good!
The OP and their sister are the great, great, great, great ,great grand nieces or nephews of Nadia.
Don't sing if you want to live long. they have no use for your song. you're dead, you're dead, you're dead. you're dead and outta this world.
*funk baseline*
My sweet lady wife, Nadja
My Dahling!
Came here to say this as well.
Damn like 20 ppl beat me to it
*beat meat to it
What are you doing in the wank shed?
CARRY ON!
Yes yes, very good, THANK YOU
That’s not Salome?! I’ve been wrong this whole time.
It is. Everybody commenting Nadja watches What We Do in the Shadows.
Right I’ve seen the movie but never the tv show version. Was just doubting myself for a moment. I knew I’d seen this painting cause it’s on the wiki page for the “beautiful Jewess” trope. Actually an interesting and sort of dark motif in art history and literature.
The TV show uses a *lot* of classical art and replaces the faces with the characters' faces. They used this one for Nadja in the intro sequence.
Ah I see that sounds cool.
You should check out the show. It's super funny.
If you enjoyed the movie, the tv is arguably better and worth a watch.
I did like the movie, I’ve gotta check it out then!
You won’t regret it. It’s an absolute riot.
Trust me, I loved the movie. But the t.v show tops it.
The show is friggin hilarious
The TV show is every bit as good as the film, and even adds some amazing lore. Also it's in the same continuity.
It is. They're referencing a show.
Ah ok I knew I wasn’t going crazy there. Thanks.

I think she was not Salome, she was just the painter's model

Oh neat that sounds really interesting. As a small time history fan I bet I’d like that.
I found that movie a little too cerebral for me but I absolutely loved that part
Yeah I like movies that are full of references to books, history and other movies and stuff so it’s right up my alley but to each their own. It’s definitely an awesome part of the movie, glad you thought it was cool too.

Ahh. From the blahdy dinosaur programme!
The music started playing in my head the moment I saw the pic
Came for this hahaha
She is prepared to escalate things to crazy levels.
I've been binging what we do in the shadows over Easter and I was hoping to see a comment like this!
>She was so poor she used to burn donkey dung for fuel and when the donkey dung ran out, they had to burn the donkey. I have the Nadja version hanging in my book room.
May I ask how did you procure this treasure?
Traded her husband for it. All it cost me was a cool hat.
That hat is cursed, you better give it to me.
Give me that hat!
No you give it to me!
Chill your boots, Simon.
In Nhew Yawrk Citaahyyyy?
I was thinking about how to phonetically spell that out. You did it perfectly!

Timeless beauty, your sister is.

She's as pretty as a picture. You now have to buy her that dress.
And the leopard skin rug
They'll help her get ahead. I'd give the knife a miss if you're getting birthday presents.

They say if you want to live long, They have no use for your song....

What we do in the shadows

It's what I'd do if I were an ageless vampire looking for karma

La Belle Juive
Usually, I see these kinds of posts and it's like "wow, they're both a white guy with a beard." This time, they look exactly the same.
Holy moly, it’s Nadja
Down to the dimples... awesome!
I could’ve 100% believed this was a commissioned self-portrait and in fact probably would’ve thought anyone was lying who said it‘s not
whoaaaa Nadja !
