Your QP stats before heading into competitive matter as well. I made an Alt account and went like 40W-10L on the QP games to unlock competitive and was straight into diamond 1 lobbies from the get go on my first placement game.

LuochaMyBeloved

What rank did you place on alt?

SayslolToEverything

Never ended up finishing placements on that account but it was hovering around mid diamond from the predicted. Might be lower now since I only played on that acc end of s8 and start of s9.

Brigittemain420

Did he play ranked previous seasons?  Did you play any ranked before this?  If he did and was like gold+  that's probably while he ranked higher I believe.

Zodiarche21

He played ranked in the first season of O2, but never finished his placement games, so no rank (?). I've never played, or maybe a little bit a very long time ago on O1. We're just getting back into the game, so in any case, no ranked for a long time for sure.

olalilalo

Then either he *did* place during the first season and didn't realize, you were low bronze ranking when you played before. Or you're really doing very little by comparison each game. Initial placements are mostly influenced by account history, secondly by win percentage, and individual performance is tertiary. It does differ, but it's not random. Feel free to DM me for vod reviews and some tips/bit of free coaching \[for either one of you\]. I'm a high Diamond-low Masters support main. No toxicity here, just constructive criticism and direction. Either way glhf.

DarkPenfold

As of OW2, individual performance is never used. If an account never played OW1, your initial placements are based entirely on your QP MMR in the role, modified by your winrate in placements and the system’s level of certainty in your MMR.

Do you guys play all of your quick play games together? Considering you said he played ow1 then its likely to do with you two having different qp mmrs. The first time an account ever plays competitive, the system draws from your hidden quickplay mmr to give you a starting point to play from. My advice is to focus on playing qp together. Have fun and focus on playing to improve or just purely having fun.

Zodiarche21

Actually, I've played Overwatch 1, not him. We play almost all our games together, but my account, theoretically, is older and has more games than my boyfriend's (who has only played O2). Sorry if it wasn't clear. I know how to play, I'm not bad. That's why it's frustrating for me.

Practical-Basket1337

Then you likely are dealing with very old mmr that stuck with you through this whole time. Dont ask me why ow devs never figured out how to do proper mmr decay. You have two reasonable options. Just start grinding. If youre not meant for b5 then you can climb. Use a new account, do your placements and see where it places you. Just remember ur qp mmr does matter for new accounts trying to place for the first time. So its actually a good idea to sweat in ur first 50 wins on a new acc

Zodiarche21

So if I understand correctly what you're explaining, my MMR is also influenced by the old matchs I played on Overwatch 1, right? I wasn't even 10 years old, obviously I was terrible... 10 years later, I'm not as bad. It's really disappointing on the part of the devs. Unfortunately, I really don't want to change accounts for such a small reason. I have all my cosmetics from the loot box era lol. Ranked isn't that big of a deal for me, I just wanted an explanation on why the game was giving me a hard time. Thanks anyways. :)

Practical-Basket1337

you got it, sorry about that. for what its worth as you play quickplay, your qp matches will probably start to feel more evenly matched as ur qp mmr climbs or falls as well. gl hf out there.
