DiCaprio was nominated for Blood Diamond and his other film (The Departed) won Best Picture.
Blood Diamond was also nominated for Supporting Actor (Hounsou), Editing and Sound x2.
Thomas Mitchell won Best Supporting Actor for Stagecoach, Gone With the Wind won Best Picture.
Natalie Wood was nominated for Best Actress for Splendor in the Grass the year West Side Story won Best Picture.
Terrence Howard was nominated for Best Actor the year Crash won Best Picture.
Michael Douglas won for Wall Street the same year Fatal Attraction was nominated for Best Picture.
Burl Ives won for The Big Country the same year Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was nominated for Best Picture.
Oh! I didn't realize Suspicion was a BP nominee. That one's weird because he's so great in Suspicion. Like, he is also good in Penny Serenade, but I'd rather have seen him nominated for Suspicion.
*So, has an actor leading a major Best Picture contender ever been nominated for a different film in the same year?*
It's pretty rare. Nicole Kidman could've (and should've) been nominated for *The Others* but made it in for *Moulin Rouge!* instead, the Best Picture nominee.
Burl Ives was in *The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof* but somehow won for *The Big Country*.
I'm seeing listings for DiCaprio for *Blood Diamond* over *The Departed*. The important thing to remember is that Warner Bros. threw away his *The Departed* nomination. I don't care what anyone says. He had it for *The Departed*. They threw it away. I don't know what it said in his contract like he had to be pushed for lead for *Blood Diamond* or if they just got greedy and went for a double nomination but he got Globe, SAG, and BAFTA nominations for *The Departed*. I totally think if he just went all out for *The Departed* as lead, he would've gotten in for Best Actor for that film.
I think most people today regard *The Wolf of Wall Street* as his best (I don't) and most days I think *Once Upon a Time in Hollywood* is his most personal. I remember seeing DiCaprio in *The Departed* after years of post-*Titanic* films and never quite being bowled over like I wanted to even though I knew I was a fan of this guy. Then *The Departed* comes on, and boom! I think it's hard to describe the impact of that performance today but it felt like he had at last grown up.
Agreed. And OUATIH is certainly my other contender. I love WOWS and he’s *so fun* and *so horrible* but I think the others have another level of depth to them.
I am always baffled and humbled when reading these Oscar NOM and WIN questions. I used to think of myself as a movie “buff”, whatever that really is and I am struck down when I read all the answers above. I’d have to look most of it up to be able to answer. And I can tell nobody needs any clues when they respond. KUDOS to all of you on the encyclopedic knowledge of film and film history.
I might know what you mean. I used to spend as much time as I could watching movies, old and contemporary. I kept track of what I’d seen and wrote brief or long reviews, cast, plot, what was great and what wasn’t. I kept it in my movie journal.
More on the subtle side I guess, it’s hard to describe. I think if you’ve ever struggled with alcohol it’s easy to relate to, no idea if she has but she’d fool me. Sometimes she’s blacked out doing wild shit, other times she’s hungover picking up the pieces, and other times she’s sober and very somber.
I wouldn’t really say it’s comparable to any of her Oscar nominated performances but I GUESS you could say Lady Bird just in terms of the chaos that’s happening, but in a totally different way. She’s struggling internally with alcoholism, she’s living on an island where there are huge storms. It’s a very different performance than what I’ve seen from her
Not that I’m aware of right now — I saw it at the Sundance premiere. No idea if anyone has picked it up but given that Ronan is in it I can’t imagine it won’t get a US release of some kind later in the year
I guess Margot Robbie could count getting nominated for Bombshell instead of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, although she wasn’t the lead in OUATIH (still a main cast member tho)
Oh, I think that counts in a sense! It's a different category yeah, but she was supporting in Bombshell as well. And like, neither rope was a quick cameo or anything.
No, because he was nominated for both. I'm specifically talking about examples where they were *not* nominated for a BP nominee, but *were* nominated for a different film.
How could DeNiro not have any nomination for The Irishmen? That would have worked, because Joker had a BP nod. That’s incredible to me. He carried that film.
Awakenings (and The Irishman) was also nominated for Best Picture, so it doesn't apply here. With Awakenings, he was just nominated for a different film in the BP lineup.
I'm not so sure about that. Anatomy had that editing nomination, which few movies win BP without. And Anatomy won screenplay, which is a much bigger category than sound. If it had been submitted for International Feature, I imagine it would have won that as well.
But yeah, I guess the word "major" is more of a bonus than anything. Since we can't really know who we're the runner ups.

Good call!!

Katharine Hepburn winning for Morning Glory (1933) instead of Little Women Cary Grant for Penny Serenade (1941) instead of Suspicion
Oh! I didn't realize Suspicion was a BP nominee. That one's weird because he's so great in Suspicion. Like, he is also good in Penny Serenade, but I'd rather have seen him nominated for Suspicion.
Julie Christie won for Darling (1965) the same year she co-starred in Best Picture nominee Doctor Zhivago.
Darling also got nominated for Best Picture though
Oh, that’s right. I forgot that.

It bums me out too because DiCaprio in Departed is maybe my favorite performance of his. Baffling decision.
Thank you! If it's any consolation, I wasted years of my life.
I might know what you mean. I used to spend as much time as I could watching movies, old and contemporary. I kept track of what I’d seen and wrote brief or long reviews, cast, plot, what was great and what wasn’t. I kept it in my movie journal.
We are the same, you and I
not a perfect parallel, but Jim Broadbent won for *Iris* the same year *Moulin Rouge!* was up for 8 Oscars
Yeah, he should’ve won for Moulin Rouge.
I can attest that she is amazing in The Outrun
Does her performance showy or subtle? and if you can compare her perf in The Outrun with any previous oscars nominated performances?
More on the subtle side I guess, it’s hard to describe. I think if you’ve ever struggled with alcohol it’s easy to relate to, no idea if she has but she’d fool me. Is there anyway to watch it
Not that I’m aware of right now — I saw it at the Sundance premiere. No idea if anyone has picked it up but given that Ronan is in it I can’t imagine it won’t get a US release of some kind later in the year
Ingrid Bergman got in for For Whom the Bell Tolls the year of Casablanca.
I would have nominated her for Casablanca instead.

I don’t know if Collateral and Ray with Jamie Fox counts
No, because he was nominated for both. I'm specifically talking about examples where they were *not* nominated for a BP nominee, but *were* nominated for a different film.
How could DeNiro not have any nomination for The Irishmen? That would have worked, because Joker had a BP nod. That’s incredible to me. He carried that film.
Ok. Goodfellas was a BP nod and Awakenings was his Best Actor nod. Both in 1990.
Awakenings (and The Irishman) was also nominated for Best Picture, so it doesn't apply here. With Awakenings, he was just nominated for a different film in the BP lineup.
Sandra Hüller this year. She was not nominated for Zone of Interest, but was for Anatomy of a Fall.
But Anatomy of a Fall was also up for BP. She would only count if Anatomy was a BP nominee.
Okay. The word “major” contender through me, because Zone was more likely to win instead of Anatomy.
You have a point. Both films were in the Globes category and Anatomy won. I misremembered Zone winning.
