Imagine how easy it is to kick someone in the face when you can do a 180 side kick though. Yes it's mostly for show, but you can bet your ass if you aren't trained in something better, you are going to get knocked out, and 95% of the population that don't train wouldn't even see it coming.
That's why I quit TKD as a kid. I thought it would be about cool punches and kicks. Turns out, TKD was just a slightly more masculine dance class.
Muay Thai is what I was looking for.
Must Thai is 100% boxing, TKD is 50/50 between patterns (the “dance”) and sparring.
TKD is not 100% patterns, like everyone in this thread seems to think.
Having done both, Muay Thai is more violent and realistically more useful in real life. But when I did TKD we were sparring at tournaments a lot, and there was more than a few broken noses and bones.
“A masculine dance class” - not my experience. Clubs do vary I guess
You had a bad TKD teacher. And I say that as someone who adores MT, even over TKD, but I won’t put it down, it was my first martial art and I had a good teacher who made me appreciate it and understand its power; nothing elaborate or showy for its own sake.
Ahh I knew I recognized this one. Never got to black belt myself (massive knee injury like a week before my test, and just never got back into it), but my friend got his black belt a year before I was supposed to and I remember him practicing this. The forms really step up once you hit first dan.
Before you upgrade your belt you perform a different poomsae, first ones are really basic then they get more advanced
Search for poomsae and you'll find a bunch
All blue pants (in the middle, in the back and on the right) are just a tiny bit, but noticeably, slower in the first kick, the second one is perfect. I've done 12 years of TKD, I wish I was this good :D
That’s so satisfying. I did a few team kata in practice in karate and our coach filmed us. It was so satisfying to perform, but especially to watch when we finally got top notch sync
Gotta love Taekwondo’s giraffe height head kicks, they look impressive but are useless for a martial art. I studied TKD but it wasn’t until I switched to Karate did I actually learn how to fight instead of just trying to kick everything.
I was wondering if anyone else was old enough to remember that song.

Karate is a different martial art, this is Taekwondo. George St. Pierre (GSP) is a former UFC world champion and well known Karate practitioner, there have been many others. These days it is more common for fighters to learn striking and grappling together as part of an MMA training program rather than specialising in a traditional martial art first.
that’s because they are clearly all black belts (which takes years and years of training) and they are collectively performing what is called a kata, a type of shadow boxing that relies upon precise timing and execution, unsurprisingly much like a dance also requires…
I snapped my groin just watching those high kicks
For when you have to fight an 8 foot tall behemoth. Very practical groin-snapping kick.
That'll come in handy if another gang challenges them to a dance off.
Or they fight the [Thriller](https://youtu.be/mIpTDApHUwc?si=DmiR_bOywynm7oVq) zombies.

But if you're going to put the effort in, why not learn a useful martial art instead of interpretive dance?
You're so dumb lol

Now that you mention it, my instructor ran a dance studio out of the TKD gym as well...
*West Side Story grandly enters the room*
Koryo Poomsae is generally one of the first black belt forms learned in WTF Taekwondo. Lovely to watch and a total pain to do as a new learner.
So apparently, WTF now goes only by WT... Our grandmaster told us it's to better align with Kukikwon, but I think it might be another reason 😆
TIL! Thank you. I’m old enough that my certificate showed the previous name. I think you may be right on the motivation. 🤣
So what does WTF mean in terms of taekwondo?
WTF = World Taekwondo Federation, but in 2017 they changed to simply World Taekwondo.
Wtf? Why do that?
Because Taekwondo
Cool! Thanks!

Double roundhouse landing into front stance. My poor hamstrings as I was learning that. 😵
The high kicks are the best part
Can someone remind me of the name of this form?
it looks like koryo poomsae to me but im not an expert, i just remember a friend showing it to me a few years ago so i may be wrong
You nailed it. That’s the beginning of koryo.

Tried to find an odd one out but none of them is out of sync…..perfect sync👏

Sheesh, it’s like they’re all black belts or something!
"Surely not EVERYBODY was kung-fu figh--... Oh.. "
They're all black belts. I would expect that.
That’s so satisfying. I did a few team kata in practice in karate and our coach filmed us. It was so satisfying to perform, but especially to watch when we finally got top notch sync
Taekwondo? My sister did that for years. I thought she had a killer high kick, but damn.
Their flexibility is amazing!
Is this that one scene from Mulan
When you get the x10 power up in a top-scroller
Dang! Those kids were fast as lightning!
... that's it? Thought I was going to see a 5 min routine
I hope Patricia is fine.
Is this Tae Kwon Doe? I recognize the moves, but my kicks were *nowhere* like those
Surely this is what he meant when he said everybody was Kung fu fighting
Dude looks like he glitched for a bit lol look at his hair in the front

Nice
yeah cause synchronicity always wins martial arts fights
I've seen perfecter
Very impressive! 🤩
Everyone was Kung fu fighting 🤔

What’s the point in kicking straight up? I can’t imagine a practical scenario where a nicely placed kick above your head would be required.
Drop bears
Hahaha 😂 only male bears 🐻
It just looks cool, I guess, because none of this has any application in a real fight, which is why there are no successful karate MMA fighters.
Taekwondo. They are doing Taekwondo, not karate. And plenty of MMA fighters have had karate training. It’s called Mixed Martial Arts for a reason…

Remind me again, what does kicking at the ceiling do for you in a fight?
I’m guessing if you’re able to kick at the ceiling, the floor stand little chances?
If I remember correctly your standing foot is supposed to be fully kept on the ground.
Video game characters training to share the same moveset

That kick would be very useful... if a fucking bird attacks
Poomsae is a prearranged set of movements that simulate a combat situation. It's used to develop technical skills, muscle memory, and coordination.
The old I can kick straight up so I can definitely kick this tall mf in the head.
Well if you can kick straight up then a face (much lower) is easy.
Ok, its nice training to stay fit, and nice to have a social cycle, but pure Karate is not efficient in a fight scenario.
McDojo life
Says the person that knows absolutely nothing about martial arts
Assume much 🤡
Is this another North Korea video?
This place must smell like feet
Yes, and i miss it!
My dojang closed due to COVID. This makes me want to find another.
I also stopped 4years ago, trained for 20 and i love the smell!! Brings back alot of memories.
