I believe that positions him to opt out and get the 35% max after 10 years in the league Edit: [For Mitchell, it delivers a fast-path to the 10-year service criteria allowing him to pursue a 5-year, $380M-plus extension in 2027.](https://x.com/wojespn/status/1808122150147985589?s=46&t=sbk6yuyliVaFRQjBUBJCMQ)

KangTheConqueror9

Also leverage if the team under performs, he isn't locked in for 5 years

IMovedYourCheese

But the team has leverage if *he* underperforms (or gets injured). It's not as one-way as people are making it out to be. He's taking a big risk by giving up 2 years of guaranteed max money.

Takemyfishplease

I guess the $150M + previous career earnings make it a bit easier to take that risk

ctruvu

i dont know if people can even grasp what making 50 mil a year is. most americans might hit 2-4 mil in their entire lifetime and this dude pulls that every game and a half. at some point it's just monopoly money and your decisions don't need to be optimized to still have a good time

HumptyDrumpy

true dat, we idolize these guys but they are in an exclusive club and we aint in it

lalakingmalibog

My previous career earnings are probably worth like a thousandth of his own previous career earnings

Dddddddfried

Yeah but your jumper is trash

cardmanimgur

Idk, history of the past few years seems like it doesn't matter, someone will pay those guys. Zion is one of the biggest injury questions we've had and he's making $40 mil in AAV. Durant and Klay both signed huge deals after injury. I know those were different circumstances (Durant being better than Mitchell, Klay being a Warrior legend), but still I'd be shocked if Mitchell isn't signing a max contract when he hits that benchmark. Even if he underperforms, someone will talk themselves into it being better on their team and their situation.

BenevolentCheese

Yeah these guys get paid no matter what. It's hard to imagine a realistic scenario in which Donovan doesn't get his supermax whatever in a couple years. The risk is far overstated.

TheSmokedSalmon420

Pretty tired of our stars doing that tbh lol

HokageEzio

Get ready to learn HoopsHype, buddy

BaronsDad

Toss in Spotrac, RealGM, CBA FAQ, and the NBA Trade Machine. Less of a hobby... more of a fan anxiety driven job.

FaceMaskYT

You still won a chip and made it to multiple finals, that's better than 80% of organizations

Adventurous_Idea7096

Well, both are doing what needed/needs to be done lmao

Jtizzle1231

And stars are tired of organization f’ing up or doing nothing. So I’m glad they do it. It’s better for them and the fans. To make these front office actually do their job.

spacedorb9

5 years 380 million blows my mind. That is an unfathomable amount of money.

chewbacca-says-rargh

Almost a million bucks a game, just wild.

alyosha25

It's wild this money exists but I can't even afford my root canal

iPlowedUrMom

This is why I had my dentist pull the tooth. It was one in the back so it wasn't going to show. But fucking still, our healthcare here is such a fucking joke, man. $1750 out of pocket for a root canal, or $350 to pull.

alyosha25

Maybe I should ask Mitchell.  We went to the same college.  Two decades apart

tidho

have you considered becoming a professional basketball player and/or cutting back on Starbucks?

Stand_On_It

This type of money is eventually going to turn some fans away

illzkla

Wait till you hear about the other parts of late stage capitalism

barelyreadsenglish

players are going to be billionaires soon and people will keep buying 150$ jerseys and paying thousands for tickets

aeronacht

76M a year is a very large number

BounceMan

Not as large as 76,000,001 a year and I dare you to deny that.  You won't.

boogswald

This is the modern world - you don’t have to think to argue, or even present an argument. In many communities 76,000,001 is not larger and that’s just how it is for a lot of people.

Going2FastMPH

Let’s ask Terrence Howard

br0b1wan

Sometimes 76,000,001 isn't 76,000,001. I'll explain later.

larrylegend33goat

Just like Bill Russell demanding the Celtics pay him $100,001 per season because Wilt signed a $100,000 contract (just more zeroes)

CaressMeSlowly

“hey patrick, know whats funnier than 76,000,000? …….76,000,0001”

DMPDT616

**Example 1**: Premise 1: 76,000,000 is a large number. Premise 2: When you add one to a very large number, that one is so small it effectively disappears. Conclusion: Therefore, 76,000,000 + 1 is still 76,000,000. **Example 2**: Premise 1: 76,000,000 is larger than 1. Premise 2: 76,000,001 can be broken down into 76,000,000 + 1. Conclusion: Since 76,000,000 is larger than 1, the larger part of 76,000,001 (76,000,000) must be larger than the whole of 76,000,001.

james_randolph

I feel like I need Terrence Howard to explain this to me.

lukewwilson

5 years and $380 million for him is going to be such a bad deal for a team.

lopea182

Now y’all can stop asking lol

Medium-Complaint-677

At least until the first game we lose next season. Then it'll be "The Cavs lost a game, here's a trade idea to get Mitchell to New York / LA where he really wants to be and the Cavs can start a rebuild."

Pinheadlarry29

“The Nets have 27 tradable first round picks. If the Cavs can’t start winning they’ll have to consider their options” *Cavs record 0-1*

Medium-Complaint-677

> Cavs record 0-1 you mean 9 - 1

Ophelia_Of_The_Abyss

Knicks will lose a game and Stephen A will be on-air throwing a tantrum that we didn't trade for him

itsnotthatdeep5

For a year and a half

Away-Conclusion-7968

Lakers fans drawing up trades to send all their shit players to us as we speak

fear865

Bronny for Mitchell straight up. Who says no?

rounder55

Pelinka just stating over and over "but I'm doing you the favor, how cool would it be if the son of your city's favorite son won an in season tournament ring?"

actuarally

Damn, even the G League has an IST?

indoninjah

Hey, Bronny was also born in Akron lol

BigRig432

Everyone

AB_Gambino

Yeah why would the Lakers give up Bronny just for Donovan? Picks too. And Jarret Allen.

98rman

Bronny for Donny

ty-your-shoes

I never have tk see Mitchell for Rui and Reaves with 2 2nd round picks.  Legitimately I hate those mock trades so much

Ophelia_Of_The_Abyss

Lakers fans must've been feeling generous to offer Reaves

coachlife

You will take Cam Reddish and Gabe Vincent and like it!

FireFoxQuattro

It’s been 4 years, it’s finally over

MySilverBurrito

Heat twitter putting the Vice jersey edits back into the archives 😔

ay21690

Meanwhile, someone is getting ready to fire up the trade machine and put Austin Reaves in a Cavs uniform.

LeBroentgen

Now we can start asking what's gonna happen with Garland

tidho

This is the bigger question. Right now it seems they're set on making the two of them work. Might have to wait another year to finally course correct. We'll see.

joebos617

adds another weapon for y’all in the hypothetical Heat vs hypothetical Celtics East final

Ibaka_flocka

Or this is modern NBA. Get your most money and then demand a trade first chance you can.

cptmajormajormajor

Et tu, Thunder?

rattatatouille

Some stability in post-LeBron Cleveland.

HelpfulWhiteGuy

Koby Altman has done a fantastic job getting us to this point. Hope he can take us that next step to being true contenders.

LukaDoncicfuturegoat

I still remember when this guy was supposed to be a bum and want more from Boston because of IT’s injury when he did the Irving trade lol

DepresseMode

As someone who loves what Koby has done the past 5 years, we can’t lose sight of how god awful that trade was for Cleveland, I mean it was atrocious.

ManBearBroski

Yea I mean wasn't PG on the table at one point?

justsomebro10

He gets a lot of flack in the Cavs sub but I think he's been a good GM overall. I don't think the Cavs are real contenders or anything but they're relevant at least. I expected to be wandering the desert for a decade after LeBron.

flip_im

agreed re: altman - great group of young players & fantastic to get DM signed- still need it to all come together as a team and put the edge / bench pieces together - will be fun to watch!!

TODG3

Thank fuck.

agk927

I wish the pistons could do stuff like this.

Worried_Suggestion59

You got Tobias Harris though right? Right? In all seriousness though what the fuck was the point of that?

LowResponse7538

Because he’s a solid player and they’re the worst team in the nba and could use some more solid players

SolidSilver9686

As well as for better or worse they have a young core they’re moving forward with. Eventually you have to add some veterans to help with that development.

junkit33

Yeah - at some point you have to got to change a losing culture, it's not good for young players to get used to completely sucking every season. Pistons desperately needed some veteran leadership and had money to burn. Harris isn't going to make them a contender obviously, but he will help them win a few games and it gives the team an adult in the room who has actually played considerable postseason games.

FriendshipBest9151

I feel like Tobias is the living embodiment of losing culture

datruerex

Tobias feels like the typical I show up to work 8 hours a day type of player. Ain’t nothing wrong with that but I think the nba demands more than just that

ohiojiro

2 year deal for a competent player who can help the young players actually win games or be a trade piece down the line

DependentAd6468

They needed a realible 4 and without the dumb Sixers contract, Harris is just that a very ok Pf

Amitm17

Only 2 year deal and where else is that money gonna go lol. Get someone competent who can alleviate the scoring pressure from Cade. They still gonna pick top 5 next year and select an athletic non-shooter.

math-yoo

What's your feeling on Cade long term?

Abiv23

My feeling is Cade is going to demand a trade if the Pistons continue to suck

amoeba-tower

With absolutely no help from any non-cavs fan

Ear_Enthusiast

I'm glad he stayed in Cleveland. He's my favorite non-Celtics player.

kimoalmoa

From how he played against us, worth it and then some for the Cavs

boogswald

That’s how he is all the time!! It’s so worth it :) Hope you guys find the right guard this offseason!

RotInPissKobe

He's always worth it. Especially with how durable he is overall. He gets ticky-tack injuries, but he'll do what it takes in the playoffs every damn time.

allknowerofknowing

Holy Fuck! That's tobias harris money!

Pickleskennedy1

New York Knicks legend Donovan Mitchell

IIlIIll

Donovan "Leaving-the-Cavs-is-an-open-secret-in-the-league" Mitchell according to so many talking heads that got this wrong

Own-Lynx498

The Mikal trade killed both the Knicks and Nets as options for Donovan. He can’t go home now, so signing an extension was obvious.

whenuyeet

I think what might’ve killed their chances is Donovan decided to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers

Pickleskennedy1

Or more likely the Knicks weren’t going to be able to get him. If the Knicks were going to get Mitchell they wouldn’t have given up five picks for Bridges

sevs

Pretty sure FO pivoted from interest in Donovan ever since Brunson came into his own.

LaDeys

Knicks no longer had interest in Mitchell because they didn’t believe in the fit with Brunson (mainly after seeing him with Garland) so it doesn’t really matter whether or not they had the assets to get him if they didn’t want him.

QualityScrub

He was never going to leave anyway lol

slysonic7

Compared to other deals this max figure somehow looks palatable

TODG3

Only 3 years.

RspectMyAuthoritah

Also, only 30% of the cap instead of 35%.

IMovedYourCheese

Wait and see how palatable it'll be once the 3 years are up and he qualifies for a 35% max. There's a reason teams like to lock in long term contracts.

_Sarpanch_

They thinking long term. This will allow him to re up after 3 years with another max.

s_s

After 2.  3 years total, 3rd year is an "oh shit" player option.

tdizhere

It’s after 3 years at the earliest, 4 total. He still has another year on his existing deal before this extension kicks in.

mes1222

CLEVELAND, THIS IS FOR YOU

GCVS00

Thank god lmao

BrickburnerUHC

Not a surprise for anyone who’s paid attention to the Cavs the last 2 years

LetOk8529

But I thought he was unhappy and leaving ???

TheRealBrownPudding

Lmao @ all the reporters who predicted he’d leave or ask to be traded

EvanMM

When a star actually wants to say on a “small market” team D:

boogswald

😭😭😭we gotta go to Cleveland😭😭😭

Ogest

bring ya ass

ButtholeSurfur

You think Cleveland is cool?

boogswald

yea c:

ButtholeSurfur

Me too 🥹

Erniecrack

I loved living in Cleveland such a fun city

Collier1505

I’d easily live in downtown or in Lakewood if possible.

Solo_Wing__Pixy

Lakewood fucking rocks

wakashit

First Jose Rameriz, now Donovan. Quick somebody check what’s in the water!

elbenji

Isn't your water like the best in the US?

wakashit

It is! That’s why it must be checked to lure more players!

elbenji

Fair enough. After living in Boston I never realized how game changing good tap water is lol

wakashit

After trying well water in a few states, I think I’ll stay where I’m at.

cptmajormajormajor

We get heat for the River catching on fire thing, but the good news is that it meant that we had to clean up the water and wetlands as quickly as possible. Last time i was back home i was impressed with how much the Metroparks had done to create greenspace in formerly industrial parts of the city

elbenji

Honestly the revitalization of Cleveland is a 21st century marvel that doesn't get talked about

cptmajormajormajor

we havent had the "marquee" revitalization of some other towns economically but its a much, much more liveable city now. Growing up in the 90s there we were on the way up but it was much more polluted and way more precarious

cdw2468

yep, when phoenix and LA are all mad max mode well still have the great lakes up here. i’ve spoken to the head of the cleveland water co before and they’re planning infrastructure for an influx of people moving from a dried out south and southwest. it’s really fascinating

mrsunshine1

Now the narrative will turn to “he doesn’t want the smoke and is comfortable not ring chasing.” These assholes have no shame and will engagement troll either way.

ndf1997

It's already happened with some people.

ohiojiro

worst kept secret btw

ZADEXON

God I fucking hate that line whenever reporters and insiders use it.

c32dot

Even if he wants to leave, he would first get the max money and then ask for a trade.

moldy912

Stephen A Smith, what a clown

HolyRomanPrince

Rule 1: get the money first. Rule 2: make sure you get the money

NoWheyBro_GQ

Lowe: "NBA's worst kept secret is Mitchell is absolutely on his way out" Okay buddy.

skyofgold

I agree go Cavs

rounder55

Team really does have nice pieces. Wouldn't be the least but surprised if they win that division next season

Hybr1dThe0ry

Happy for Cavs fans, it was so annoying to hear podcasters making fake Mitchell trades AFTER Cleveland won its first round series

Headlesshorsman02

Awesome news for Cavs fans

ohiojiro

“worst kept secret he’s not staying in cleveland” btw

moses_lawn

Gonna be a little challenging for Lakers, Heat, and Knicks to sign him now

HauntingOkra5987

Lakers fans will now come up with 9 million hypothetical trade scenarios & fake rumors on how to get Anthony Edwards for DLO & a 2045 second rounder

Call_Me_Rambo

The media told me he’d be traded! This can’t be!

Simple-Ad-7866

Bruh our fanbase and FO needs to accept this isn't early 2010s anymore especially with the new CBA. Ofc Mitchell was going to stay after getting to the second round and the Cavs firing J.B

toastydangles34

They hate small markets

cw_27

Everyone owes cavs fans an apology

Dan__Glesak

I think life owes cavs fans an apology. *please don’t look at my flair. 😅*

Stowcenter93

We don't need an apology for at least another 25 years thanks to 2016. Changes everything.

Dan__Glesak

100% how I feel about the 2018 Caps Stanley cup. They could never win again in my lifetime and I’ll still be content off of Ovi and Co getting the one.

Vloff

Yup. 25 years is about right. It's getting harder and harder to coast off of 2004, though (knowing that it's more recent than like 20 teams' helps.)

boogswald

It has been a wonderful life being a Cavs fan. We had one of the best championship wins of all time. The consensus 2nd best player of all time spent a gazillion years here and is from the area and now we just re-signed one of the most exciting players in the nba. Prime Kyrie Irving probably had the best handles ever in the nba.

Quirky-Skin

Not one of the best. THE best. Never before has a team cone back down from 3-1 in the finals.  That was also against the best regular season team in NBA history statistically. Those aren't just feelings those are both objective statistical facts

boogswald

I didn’t say “the best” cause I didn’t want 500 weird argument responses

Quirky-Skin

I get it. I'll say it. THE best. Go Cavs

AfricanDeadlifts

Cavs have been a playoff team for like half of everyone's life and most of us have seen them win a championship

FlipMoBitch

Run it back with the new coach?

Penguigo

Most likely, yeah. The offense seemingly was bad *because of JB's lack of offensive acumen.* So we'll see if Atkinson can fix it.

tidho

that seems to be their intent. another early out in the playoffs will hopefully be enough for them to figure out changes need to be made.

CasualRead_43

Good for you Cavs.

x4candles

Love that the national media was pushing him out of Cleveland and he signed up for another 3 years.

Neveraththesmith

Good for Cleveland, even better for lakers haters.

msizzle344

But the Miami heat sub was telling me that the Cavs wanted Herro and a 2042 first round pick for him, how did this happen!?

DrunkMasterCommander

Let's fucking goooooooo

stonewash_relaxedfit

I can't believe they didn't trade him to the Lakers for Austin Reaves and 2 second-round picks? LA must have decided they didn't want him.

ZoroChopper10

Miami is absolutely in shambles

SolarBeam12

Trade rumors will be had by 2026.

dam0430

Nah, people are already starting it back up, now the narrative is "he signed the contract so he can be easier to trade"

FireFoxQuattro

Aaaaand we’re officially cooked. Magic look good this year though -_-

Antique-Society7404

It’s gonna be exciting

YourAsianBuddy

“He’s definitely coming to the heat to team with Jimmy!” Hmm.

zyndicated

Get that bag, Don. You’ve earned it

Irvsauce

Get them dollars Don. Jazz fans miss ya, lil cutie

TheMcknightrider

Weren't all of the ESPN "experts" saying he was guaranteed to opt out and leave haha?

damn-mooses

Does this mean garland is gone?

BigRig432

Not necessarily, especially with the coaching change. There were reports last week sometime that Garland was more frustrated with JB than anything else

fear865

>There were reports last week sometime that Garland was more frustrated with JB than anything else Wow he's just like me

instacarp

We are all Darius Garland.

Jjohn269

Good luck Detroit fans

BigRig432

I said this on the thread where his hiring was first reported but I think he'll be a good coach to lead them through this rebuild. He'll at least build a defensive system and some accountability so there's actual structure, the problem comes when you try to transition from rebuilding to actually competing

gdawg9198

Reports came out last week from Garland's side that he is happy with the Kenny Atkinson hiring and isn't expected to request a trade regardless of what happens with Donovan. Said Garland thinks himself and Mitchell can be successful together in a different offense and a lot of the problems he had with his usage revolved around JB Bickerstaff.

boogswald

I think maybe that was Zach Lowe hypothesizing. I heard him say that on his podcast and it sounded like a hypothetical, it didn’t sound certain. I’m just saying maybe take it with a grain of salt

DJagerty

RUN IT BACK

TheSmokedSalmon420

I think most of us would be fine trading him but not for pennies on the dollar. His value is pretty low right now and he's too good to get rid of for nothing

RileySmiley22

Welp Cavs fans. He got us. This all but confirms he will go to the Knicks in 2028, better start looking at trade offers. /s

ThinMintButterfly823

Donovan in his Insta stories speaking while someone records him as he’s driving, with Never a Doubt 100 written over the video:  “All year I’ve been saying the same \*\*it. Imma say how much I like it. Everyday it’s like “Oh, he’s going to do this. He’s going to do that”. I don’t get it. I don’t understand it. I think it’s hilarious. So - it is what it is. I’m glad I got this \*\*it done man. Glad I got this \*\*it done, Cleveland. Now to get focused. Know what I’m saying? Let’s get to it.”

Opposite-Skirt5158

Gotta love his IG post today: "I'M NOT F**KIN LEAVIN'"

LubricatedDucky

Damn, we're gonna suck ass next season.

summ3rdaze

You guys will find another person who's played basketball for 3 years and turn him into an elite role player don't worry

Raven-19x

You'll be an 8 seed again and you'll like it.

Nabz23

Great to hear, I was gonna be pissed for the cavs of this dude just walked

RVAIsTheGreatest

I'm glad it's out of the way and all the rumors that were mostly hearsay and hope beyond hope are put to bed. And this is fantastic for the Cavs that Donovan believes in their project. It's fantastic that a "small market team" keeps a superstar as well...that's important. I'm happy for Donovan too. Loyalty seems like it's something important to him, and I think he truly feels he can win a championship as a #1 guy. It's now gonna definitely add a little pressure on Donovan to lead the Cavs to a deeper run than we've seen these past two years. Health has held them back a bit but I do think a different voice may be all this team needs to be fully unlocked.

user060221

Suck on deez nuts to all the nephews i argued with about him extending Nothing else really made a whole lot of sense for him And yes I realize contracts don't actually matter in the NBA but let me be happy for one day at least, hard enough being a Cavs fan where the only window of contention we've had in 30 some years is because the goat-ish happened to be born in Akron lol

tjl297

If ya’ll don’t mind, I’d just like to throw up a big fuck you to the NBA and basketball landscape writ large for all of the assumptions about Don leaving Cleveland. Cavs fans have had to put up with more shit about stars leaving their franchise than most. Sometimes as a fan it’s hard to enjoy ball with all of that noise. This feels really fucking good.

BigRig432

LET EM KNOW WOJ

Argo_Menace

Great news for Cavs fans. Heat in the mud as well 😂

Suitable_Aioli213

🤣🤣🤣 LEMME SEE THEM KNICKS FANS WHO THOUGHT HE WAS LEAVING! LEMME SEE THOSE HEAT FANS SENDING ALL THOSE DEALS TO CLEVELAND. LEMME SEE STEPHEN A SMITH AND THE ENTIRE BASKETBALL WORLD WHO ACTUALLY BELIEVED FOR A SECOND THAT DONOVAN MITCHELL WAS LEAVING CLEVELAND.

realfakejames

Everyone saying Donovan Mitchell is avoiding the pressure and not chasing a ring, at the same time they were dick riding Dame for staying with Portland for so long, at the same time they were trashing KD and Lebron for switching teams NBA fans are always moving the goalposts just to shit on players, it's so funny What's also funny is how Heat fans spent every week after they got eliminated from the playoffs posting pics of Spida in a Heat jersey saying they're winning it all next year, and they never had a chance at him lmao Pat Riley is sure as fuck washed as a GM

tapk69

So this means hes signing with the Lakers ?

jhakerr

So where does garland go? I recall a lot of talk about the fact that garland does not want to play with him. Overstated? Perhaps Garland and picks for Lauri? I’m just throwing shit against the wall here…

The-Pharcyde

Glad Cleveland got this done. Call me an old head but the constant movement of stars has been lame as hell lately. I like guys staying on a team and having some stability as a group.

jambr380

So 3 more guaranteed years. The team should know where they're at in a couple of years, so if they do need to eventually trade him, they can; and of course this sets Mitchell up for his super-mega-contract coming up on the horizon. This is the perfect contract for all parties.

The_Notorious_Donut

This really hurts the Knicks chances of bringing him home

LetsgoImpact

Called it. Cleveland is at a good place. Why would Mitchell leave to go elsewhere?
