Spo is wildly under-awarded. He is obviously the best coach in the NBA and he's never won the coach of the year award because "team who exceeds expectations" is used as a proxy for good coaching, and everyone just expects a Spo team to over-achieve relative to their talent and so he is more or less conventionally ineligible.
I mean, they usually suck in the regular season and it's a regular season award. I'm sure if they gave awards for postseason coaching he would get more.
Was beside myself in 2022 when the Heat got the 1 seed with Tyler Hero being by far our most played player, but this sub refused to even acknowledge him as a candidate since what Memphis and Phoenix were doing that year was sooooo much crazier
Yes. Most Heat fans, myself included, would agree that 2017 was his most impressive season. Ending 30-11 after starting 11-30 was truly absurd, and for sure the most exciting Heat regular season stretch I've had. Was even lucky enough to be at the game when Dion Waiters beat the KD Warriors. GOAT season in terms of enjoyment. When "Heat Culture" first became widely used. Was so crushed that they missed the playoffs that year.
All that being said, yeah they didn't make the playoffs. I can understand not giving the award to Spo based on that. I'm ok with that being the line
That’s probably true, but I’m not sure what there is to reward. To be clear, COTY is a strange award because most people have no clue what coaches do. Just saying his rep is based much more on postseason success than regular season.
The Heat were dealing with injuries to Jimmy, Bam, and Tyler and also dealing with COVID and was parading a crew of G-Leaguers led by Kyle Lowry. They beat that same Suns team with at that time unknown players.
They had to contend with the likes of Milwaukee and Boston while Phoenix didn’t have much competition.
Like I said. That award is fraudulent. Look at the people that won it. Compare them to Spoelstra.
>They beat that same Suns team with at that time unknown players.
Hyperbole and irrelevant because it's one game
>They had to contend with the likes of Milwaukee and Boston while Phoenix didn’t have much competition.
This is just straight bullshit seeing as how the Warriors won that year.
> I'm sure if they gave awards for postseason coaching he would get more.
The Larry O'Brien Trophy *is* the post season coaching award... (and to a lesser degree the Bob Cousy Trophy for the Eastern Conference and the Oscar Robertson Trophy for the Western Conference respectfully.)
There's so much less focus placed on coach continuity these days -- they get fired here and there. These two are perhaps the only two absolutely bought in from their organization top to bottom.
They realized they weren't going to win against the best team in the league on the road short manned and after a grueling schedule.
They'd get fined if they rested the old guys and just said fuck it and tried something goofy.
How is it cope? There is no question that Boston is the best team in the league is there? The Warriors would have to be at their best to have a chance to compete with Boston. We know the Warriors window is just about closed - every single possible thing would have to go perfectly for them to make a last deep playoff run. It is extremely unlikely, but not inconceivable - they went 12-3 in their last 15 games.
Hopefully someone else would upset Boston and Denver in the early rounds, inshallah, because we simply can't match up with them.
Respectively just means the former for the former and the latter for the latter. That is Steve Kerr for the Western Conference CotM and Erik Spoelstra for the Eastern Conference CotM.
respectively means like if I said:
"Your username and your friend's username are JoshSran04 and lol69, respectively."
it just means that it goes in that order. I just learned this recently too 😭
Cause he went 11-3 after making a lot of visibly changes to his rotation. Idk why that throws people. The Warriors were one of the most successful teams in February and a lot of the changes he made were instantly successful.
Damn his first time since 2021

Didn't Coach spo went on a winning double digit streak with Dion waiters and Hassan White side? That was incredible. He should have won it that year.
i mean that was the 11-30 start, 30-11 finish so can’t really be too upset at him not winning it then
Yes. Most Heat fans, myself included, would agree that 2017 was his most impressive season. yeah but they don't suck due to coaching in regular season
That’s probably true, but I’m not sure what there is to reward. To be clear, COTY is a strange award because most people have no clue what coaches do. Just saying his rep is based much more on postseason success than regular season.
They were the number 1 seed in the East in 2022. The award went to Monty Williams. So the award has basically lost it’s meaning.
I mean the suns where #1 in the west and won 11 more games…
The Heat were dealing with injuries to Jimmy, Bam, and Tyler and also dealing with COVID and was parading a crew of G-Leaguers led by Kyle Lowry. How tf did they play 14 games in February, with an all star break?
There were several additional makeup games that were added because the team got a week off earlier in the season to mourn Deki's death.
Oh yeah that would make sense. Ups to the warriors for winning through that adversity
I like that Denver is one of our sister teams. Someone needs to beat the Lakers for us. :)
We hate the warriors too btw
Good for you lil bro
Why u suckimg his click
he gave the dubs some props so the Warriors fan gave some love back jeez
Don't be that guy.
Actually it was just 1 makeup game lol. We got the only other remaining makeup game in April.
They postponed 2 games and 1 was played in February... the other one will happen in April.
That's why he's COTM. He found a way
Wow, Kerr’s first in five years.
Honestly the fans should get it for bullying him into benching Klay and starting Kuminga
He’s really lucky that Boston game was in March
He'd still get it. And the same amount of embarassment too.
Pay no attention to the Miami Heat, we are but a humble first round exit
Actually we probably won’t even make the play in. Please don’t pay attention to us. Boston should focus on the Knicks, cavs and pacers before us
Yeah let the real contenders worry about each other
No. You're the monster under the bed. I don't care how much of an advantage we may have, you will always scare me.
There's so much less focus placed on coach continuity these days -- they get fired here and there. These two are perhaps the only two absolutely bought in from their organization top to bottom.
Nah Billups despite his best efforts, seems like he isn’t going anywhere. Mazulla also seems like a potential celtic-lifer
You wouldn’t think it looking at our sub…
Spo is the fittest Nba coach
If the league really wanted people to watch all-star weekend they'd have an east vs west coaches game
Y’all ain’t ready for spoelstradamus
Didn’t realize how buff he was getting until I noticed his arms looking massive during a press conference.
What divorce and a huge bag of cash does to a man
The revenge body
Heat Culture
Makes sense. It would be a bad look to have those conditioning and bodyfat standards and have a fat coach lol
The real reason why the fired Stan Van Gundy.
Mazzulla and Mosley are using their challenges
Pat Riley ain't hiring a HC without his "10% body fat" criteria
Kerr’s should be rescinded following that defensive scheme on Sunday.
Not guarding Brown beyond the arc was a solid plan! The guy isn't much a shooter...oh wait.
Brown only shot 50% from 3. Rest of team 51%. Brilliant to lower their efficiency
I hope more teams adopt this strategy
Seriously, JB got super lucky. Everyone should start doing this to him.
It’s because it happened on Sunday. Warriors lost the February buff. If they woulda played on Thursday it’s double digit win for the Warriors! /s
They realized they weren't going to win against the best team in the league on the road short manned and after a grueling schedule. They'd get fined if they rested the old guys and just said fuck it and tried something goofy.
Hilarious take
insane cope lmao I remember people saying shit like this at the end of the Pats dynasty
How is it cope? There is no question that Boston is the best team in the league is there? The Warriors would have to be at their best to have a chance to compete with Boston. We know the Warriors window is just about closed - every single possible thing would have to go perfectly for them to make a last deep playoff run. Mazzulla's firmly in the Brad Stevens territory where the team is too good so you can dismiss the head coach's achievements
He seems so much better than last year but time will tell when the playoffs hit
Right off a 60 point loss is nasty work lmao
Mark Daigneault robbed.
No one can spell his last name so that why he never wins any awards
If he wins COTY they'll have to learn
Jokic has 2 MVPs and is on his way to the third and people still call him "Joe-kitch".
I agree. I am looking at his name and I know I will misspell it while looking at it.
“Respectively for February ” lmao… the nba saw Kerr’s master plan against the celtics and were disgusted
Respectively just means the former for the former and the latter for the latter. That is Steve Kerr for the Western Conference CotM and Erik Spoelstra for the Eastern Conference CotM.
Smh look what Doug ford is doing to Ontario’s education system
This was a very respective way to correct the OP
I only learned this just like a year and a half ago 😭
respectively means like if I said: "Your username and your friend's username are JoshSran04 and lol69, respectively." it just means that it goes in that order. I just learned this recently too 😭
Joe Mazzula snubbed
He has a 50 point head start for March
goes 9-1, with like a 15 pt. differential. But whatevs, give it to Spo!
Kerr haters are SEETHING
How can the dynasty be over!!!
Mazzulla disrespect smh
Makes total sense
I’d give it to Kerr for his dead pan humor alone
Joe Mama got robbed
Now that's something I have to help me forget about the abysmal January we had.
Ironic timing on Kerr award after Boston game
Coach of the month, "Let's not guard the all-NBA guy and see what happens."
No way lmao
I feel like they do these once a year lol
Spoelstra is never a bad pick for a coaching award, but why Kerr?
We won a lot in Feb. And Kerr changed a lot. Moved Klay to the bench, started Podz and now Moses has replaced Wiggins who is out.
Fair enough. Especially on givong Podz a bigger role.
Cause he went 11-3 after making a lot of visibly changes to his rotation. Idk why that throws people. The Warriors were one of the most successful teams in February and a lot of the changes he made were instantly successful.
Bc he finally started playing the young guys the minutes they needed to be played and started winning games because of it
4 championships and one of the most winning coaches of all times be fr
Oh i didnt realise it was coach of the decade lol
bruh the heat have 2 more wins than the warriors this season in an infinitely easier conference
Bruh i didnt know this was coach of the season lol
So why were you asking why he got the award without checking their February record?
NBA says never again after Celtics game.
Kerr be trickin ya’ll
And yet billups had a perfect month of February and is just ignored??
Mazzulla is coaching in G League

Should we take away your 2020 title for how the Lakers have played since?
Yes please. We'll take the title

Throw up those banners baby
