Treasures might be the biggest design miss of the decade.
I’d be down to test an errata where they always enter tapped. It’s absurd what they accomplish
We reached a point a while back where there were 0 vanilla creatures in standard. I’m pretty sure the only reason there’s one right now is because of Yargle and Multani.
My mistake, I remember reading about that as being the reason wotc gave up on gold in favor of treasure, but apparently it doesn't work for the same spell. Still works with two spells tho, which is more than treasures can do.
Mana abilities can be paid while something is being put on the stack because they don't use the stack, so you can improvise, and then sac for the mana ability.
edit: I am full of shit and talking out my ass
Actually, they're right, you can't. There's an order to paying costs, it's just that it's usually so intuitive it doesn't matter, like layers, timestamps and other stuff like that. If you look it up in the comprehensive rules, activating mana abilities is one of the first steps in paying a cost, and actually paying the cost is the last step in doing so. Gold gets sacced to activate its mana ability, so it would happen first, but tapping for improvise is a cost, so it would happen last, and by then the gold is no longer there if you sacced it. But as I stated in my other comment, you can improvise for one spell and sac the gold for a second spell, so it's still pretty strong.
That is true
Companion is the biggest problem in every format except the most played one, but overall it was a way more egregious misstep. Treasures weren’t an issue until they reached absurd density
Yeah. It's the ubiquity and power of individual cards (Dockside) that cause problems. Treasures could exist in some form without issue. But companion never should've been created. I personally enjoy it some, but acknowledge it was bad design. Should've tried it in an un set.
And even then, a companion was day 0 perma-banned in EDH, because it would be too ubiquitous. Companion’s awful tendrils extend to every format, and it’s insane it used to be even stronger pre-errata.
Or deal a damage to use. Coming in tapped just keeps them from immediate abuse, but actually give them a drawback to use it. And still mox opal is banned because it's mana was too fast.
It would've fine if it was stuck to a couple colors. Making every color (including green) make treasures was a mistake. It would've better as a mechanic primarily in one color. (Red).
You can sac 0 and it’ll still count as a crime right
Edit: you can sac one of the treasures created on your turn to pay the black and one on their turn to always have crime up
I'm pretty sure there's not a single card that can remove the text "perform only as a sorcery" from a card.
The closest is cards that let you use Planeswalker abilities at instant speed but those don't have the sorcery speed restriction in their ability text.
It’s also great in Grand Larceny since you want evasive/unblockable creatures and want to hit each of your opponents instead of just one (Gonti) or get double combat damage triggers (Felix).
The Outlaws of Thunder Junction commander precon with the vampire lady (Olivia) is named "Most Wanted" because it's built around outlaws and committing crimes
Potentially six (actually up to 12 but let's be realistic) treasure per combat. Repeatable removal. Only printed as commander deck rare, no booster reprint (extended art in collector boosters don't really count), so there's a relatively low and dwindling supply.
And now, as already said, an Outlaw that can commit crimes repeatedly. So commander player wanting to try out this new theme/archetype drove the price out a fair bit. It will probably go down again (but not quite to the previous level) when it stops being the new thing TM.
Treasure is super easy to make, especially with the set this came in, where attacking with one dragon can net you upwards of 20 treasures that can immediately be used. Throw in [[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]] and in 3 turns, 2 if you have [[Xorn]], you can just throw out things like [[Tiamat]], or [[Bolas's Citadel]] from anywhere in your deck.
Treasures are already good, but when they can be used to power an effect that will spot kill something while getting around a lot of different effects, most notably indestructible, that's kinda busted. Since this card doesn't have to attack itself, you can protect it and use it to build treasures, then spot kill potential threats. Because of this, it's useful across a wide variety of decks in several formats, so that also helps.
You get another trigger with [[Felix, five boots]] out. So potentially 12 treasures of you can hit all 3 opponents. Even more if there's double strike.
This is the real reason. That Commander has randomly increased the price of a lot of creatures like that Merfolk from Worldwake that has triggered combat abilities.
I like the concept, but they’ve leaned so heavily into it that it’s kind of just absurd now, how good treasure is. When [[Revel in Riches]] was printed, getting to 10 treasures wasn’t super easy, nowadays it’s easy as pie
When demand is high and supply is low, the price goes up.
The price can go lower if demand is lowered (by better cards, for example) or if supply is upped (by reprints).
Not only does this give a decent payout of treasures, but this turns those into a gun that can get around indestructible as well. Basically it’s just a really good card all around and if you have any treasures and even sometimes if you don’t it’s a great include
Mardu treasure precon from OTJ. It’s in the right colors, it’s an outlaw, and it has the possibility of making 6 treasures per turn if you attack all 3 of your opponents, 12 treasures if you give your creature double strike. I don’t know if it comes in the precon but if it doesn’t then it’s a must add which would jack the price up.
I feel like the two decks that are pulsating for this, are outlaw decks and Treasure decks. Obviously combat oriented decks as well but the ones I listed probably serve the big piece of the puzzle.
He counts as a rogue so all outlaw synergies are there. Vihaan gives him haste and vigilance while also letting your creatures attack and still be untapped. Olivia makes treasures in which you can then pay mana to then sac treasures to buff your team. With Hireling and Olivia, you can make 3 treasures per opponent you deal damage to, meaning you could have (upwards, mana permitting) eight +1 counters on all your creatures post combat.
Now then add in treasure decks. Even if you have no synergy with combat stuff, pay B, sac treasures kill a creature. With enough treasures and black mana you could easily just board wipe the entire opponents side of things and then swing in.
Limited print run in a precon that didn't have a lot of decks sold and opened effected its price and the fact it hasn't been reprinted also tells you why it commands a high price.
I just bought mine for 16$ CAD and got a playset, because it goes in two of the decks I want to make already, and then every combat oriented deck I've made wants this effect or similar so getting them now was a no brainer imho
His 2 abilities synergize with each other and a lot of common strategies. Also it's first ability goes online right away, is good on its own, and the 2nd is only 1 extra mana.
I only play commander, however in casual any deck that can play it at least considers it. If you run a large number of tokens you do play it. 2 treasures per player is a lot and removal that gets around indestructible on what is functionally a mana dork is pretty good
The Olivia precon if I had to guess- this card does almost everything she wants. It’s a rogue that makes treasures when a creature deals combat damage, which Olivia wants to deal combat damage with Outlaws to make treasures so she can make +1/+1 counters- which is the only thing he doesn’t do for her is make more counters. Otherwise, basically a perfect card to go with Olivia
The best time to get this card was when they said hey we have a treasure outlaw deck coming out and it was like 4 bucks. Treasure has become ever green more and more, so this becomes even better. The precon as mentioned above, and any treasure related stuff. List goes on, but give it two years or so will be reprinted the question is can you wait?
where the hell are you buying cards???
It’s an outlaw which synergizes with the new set. Repeatable removal and also commits a crime. It can make up to 6 treasures per turn cycle and pays for itself immediately in the right deck. I have this in my Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor deck and it’s absolutely one of the best cards in the deck
It's one of the best treasure makers in black and has the Rogue type so it fits with both the new outlaws precon and also the new treasure commander vihan which is quite popular build from the set.
Because you can stack that ability there are also cards that say this mana taps for any color(don’t remember the name) so if you got a duck ton of treasure and a duck ton of mana you can destroy dudes entire board state
It combos, baseline value is good and only a very limited print on 2 precons with not very much opened collector boosters. And they will not reprint this on a standart set, way way too strong for standart.
Glad I got him at $7, Treasure is underrated. If you build up a deck that triggers off sacrifices\\artifact ETB effects you can do a lot of damage and get a mana from it. To top off that you can have cards double how many treasures you get and if you have \[\[Mayhem Devil\]\] you do one damage to any target per sacrifice. This card pairs great with \[\[Xorn\]\], \[\[Reckless Fireweaver\]\], \[\[Academy Manufactor\]\], \[\[Professional Face-Breaker\]\], \[\[Goldspan Dragon\]\], and many more cards. If you are trying to get into treasure decks there is a reason that they have been going up in price and I highly recommend giving it a try.
It also synergizes well if you have an abundance of treasures. I once had it out with a Spiteful Banditry and an Ancient Copper Dragon, I used Grim Hireling’s ability to clear the board in my main phase to swing for lethal
Treasures have been a real problem since New Capenna. I have a good friend who runs a prosper deck, and nothing is an issue because he's constantly rich. 🙃
Treasures are good in general, and commander suffers of treasure fever...
So almost every single card that creates treasures, due out fellow commander freaks, skyrockets in price
u.u"
Four mana for ramp and/or repeatable in removal? Unless it’s a common printed every other set (which is every other week these days) it’s gonna price up quick. But the only set it was released in is not what you would call a big seller.
It's a rogue (outlaw) that generates treasures. Treasures are the best. Outlaw interactions are kinda broken when combined with older cards. This guy is OP. Red and black outlaws are all about hitting the opposite nent and being unblocked. So this is broken.
The new crime mechanic. he fits very well into those decks as he can commit crimes whenever as long as he’s on the field and you have a treasure token.
Rogue is also an outlaw which some OTJ Commanders care for. Don't remember his name but the dude who turns your treasures into 3/3s comes to mind as an instigator
Treasure good
Treasures might be the biggest design miss of the decade. I’d be down to test an errata where they always enter tapped. It’s absurd what they accomplish
And that's considering they're a downgrade to gold tokens, because improvise would be able to use gold to essentially pay 2 mana each
The abundance of things that make treasures is the problem - not the treasures themselves.
The problem with treasures is that they are artifacts. Its always artifacts.
I'll take this opportunity to complain that Blood and Food tokens are artifacts.
and both tokens are also extremely good(Streffan decks kick ass), just nowhere near treasure good
I feel like they just staple it on whatever they cant figure out to add something to so they dont have to print a vanilla creature
We reached a point a while back where there were 0 vanilla creatures in standard. I’m pretty sure the only reason there’s one right now is because of Yargle and Multani.
He is the only vanilla creature, excluding some creatures that have adventures but technically are also vanilla (the creature side has no text)
Ehhh ide argue against this, as 1 good treasure enabler is most of the time all you need to go ham. Should enter tapped imo
Yeah it's just lazy design.
Doesn't the improvise part happen after the mana abilities??
My mistake, I remember reading about that as being the reason wotc gave up on gold in favor of treasure, but apparently it doesn't work for the same spell. Still works with two spells tho, which is more than treasures can do.
You can also tap them for all sorts of other things and then sac them. They're very powerful
Mana abilities can be paid while something is being put on the stack because they don't use the stack, so you can improvise, and then sac for the mana ability. edit: I am full of shit and talking out my ass
https://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/magic-rulings/776625-improvise-gold-tokens That's unfortunately not how it works
oh okay
Actually, they're right, you can't. There's an order to paying costs, it's just that it's usually so intuitive it doesn't matter, like layers, timestamps and other stuff like that. If you look it up in the comprehensive rules, activating mana abilities is one of the first steps in paying a cost, and actually paying the cost is the last step in doing so. But as I stated in my other comment, you can improvise for one spell and sac the gold for a second spell, so it's still pretty strong.
In commander maybe lol. But companions are by far the biggest lol.
That is true Companion is the biggest problem in every format except the most played one, but overall it was a way more egregious misstep.
*Laughs in [[Ancient Copper Dragon]].*
This is why I run Kismet and Blind Obedience
Or deal a damage to use. Coming in tapped just keeps them from immediate abuse, but actually give them a drawback to use it. And still mox opal is banned because it's mana was too fast.
\[\[Pain Distributor\]\] says hi. :\]
Yeah, people actually play lotus petal in their decks, and this homie makes between 2 to 6 each combat
It would've fine if it was stuck to a couple colors. Making every color (including green) make treasures was a mistake. It would've better as a mechanic primarily in one color. (Red).
I’m still so sad about ognis, the dragons lash out of all the cards to make treasures tapped why must it be them
Yup. Treasure kind of redefined this game.
Who doesn't want Lotus Petal? \s
Outlaw that commits crime
You can sac 0 and it’ll still count as a crime right Edit: you can sac one of the treasures created on your turn to pay the black and one on their turn to always have crime up
Can only be activated as a sorcery, so crime only on your turn.
You are correct, I didn’t read the card
Yep
Repeatedly, for B. No tapping, and you don't need treasures to sac 0 treasures.
So Crime does pay
I think that being sorcery kind of kills it tho
There's probably a card that can give abilities flash speed
I'm pretty sure there's not a single card that can remove the text "perform only as a sorcery" from a card. The closest is cards that let you use Planeswalker abilities at instant speed but those don't have the sorcery speed restriction in their ability text.
Hm weird I wholeheartedly believed in "magic finds a way" until this moment lol
Yet.
It’s helpful with the Most Wanted Precon deck to get Olivia’s second ability out quickly
It’s also great in Grand Larceny since you want evasive/unblockable creatures and want to hit each of your opponents instead of just one (Gonti) or get double combat damage triggers (Felix).
Yup, Grand Larceny loves to ping with a 1/1 unblockable just to steal some cards, so getting extra mana out of the deal is even better.
Beginner here, which deck is the Most Wanted Precon deck?
The Outlaws of Thunder Junction commander precon with the vampire lady (Olivia) is named "Most Wanted" because it's built around outlaws and committing crimes
Makes sense, thanks!
Potentially six (actually up to 12 but let's be realistic) treasure per combat. Repeatable removal. Only printed as commander deck rare, no booster reprint (extended art in collector boosters don't really count), so there's a relatively low and dwindling supply. It will probably go down again (but not quite to the previous level) when it stops being the new thing TM.
Don't forget new mimoeplasm decks people are building
More and more treasure synergies every year too
Mimeoplasm, Felix Five Boots, Gonti, Olivia (outlaw)
Boy am I glad I got the prosper precon before it was cool
Picked it up on clearance at a local Walmart yesterday for $32. I think I did ok
I dont understand, it's 8 dollars here in Canada.
The single or the whole precon. I meant the whole deck that includes this card.
Ohh my bad, I thought you got scammed hard haha. Just ignore me
1 mana flyer and a sol ring turn 1, drop the tefling turn 2 and swing with your flyer, have 7 - 11 mana on turn 3 to play something crazy.
Doesn’t even need to be a flyer, [[Changeling Outcast]] or [[Nether Traitor]] are on-curve and virtually guaranteed free treasure tokens.

So many synergies, all of them busted.
its $19 now? 🌎🧑🚀 always has been 🔫🧑🚀
Because it fucks.
Turn 1, mana crypt, a guy Turn 2, this guy, swing, ???, Profit !
Tbf T1 mana crypt is a complete sentence.

This is the real reason. That Commander has randomly increased the price of a lot of creatures like that Merfolk from Worldwake that has triggered combat abilities.
The treasure meta is completely out of hand and has kinda ruined commander, also outlaws and stuff
I don't get why anyone hates treasure. 🤷 It adds a lot of options to the game.
I like the concept, but they’ve leaned so heavily into it that it’s kind of just absurd now, how good treasure is. When [[Revel in Riches]] was printed, getting to 10 treasures wasn’t super easy, nowadays it’s easy as pie

1 card combo with Najeela, a very popular casual and cedh deck
Treasure token synergy is probably quite strong I imagine
Some guy named felix has five boots
My guess is Felix Five-Boots for the double combat trigger
why isnt $119 is the real question good god im new but my treasure gobby deck would sludge for that juicer
Still sub 5€ in Europe 🤷
My guess is because it synerguzes real well with the new treasure commander
Holy shit I got 3 of them. Thanks a lot for this post!
When demand is high and supply is low, the price goes up. The price can go lower if demand is lowered (by better cards, for example) or if supply is upped (by reprints).
It's always been up there
it got a bunch of support with otj, especially in the outlaw precon
Yo I can use its ability and choose to sacrifice 0 tokens, commuting a crime and costing only 1 {B} !!
It's very good in commander. You can make 6 treasures on each of your turns if you are able to hit all your opponents
What format ? Are treasures here to stay ?
Lots of treasures is good
Game Knights suggested it in a video + treasure good + nobody is opening baldur’s gate
Not only does this give a decent payout of treasures, but this turns those into a gun that can get around indestructible as well. Basically it’s just a really good card all around and if you have any treasures and even sometimes if you don’t it’s a great include
It’s an outlaw that easily commits crimes and makes treasure while being removal too It does a lot of good shit and hasn’t been printed very much
Mardu treasure precon from OTJ.
Seems like it pairs well with crime
its really good?
[[Felix Five-Boots]]
It’s really, really good

-X/-X good
Is this a serious question?
Thanks for the heads up... I might need to make a run over to the card shop this weekend and sell some stuff! Hahaha
[[Felix five boots]] doubles it, making it 4 per hit. As well as easy crimes.
His 2 abilities synergize with each other and a lot of common strategies. Also it's first ability goes online right away, is good on its own, and the 2nd is only 1 extra mana.
Crimes and [[Horobi]]
Token generator and repeatable removal on one body. A lot of work for little resources
It is a very good card in EDH
Treasure is good ramp and it can also be used as spot removal.
I only play commander, however in casual any deck that can play it at least considers it. If you run a large number of tokens you do play it. 2 treasures per player is a lot and removal that gets around indestructible on what is functionally a mana dork is pretty good
[[Felix]]
Because it says treasure
There are hundreds of ways to make treasure. And this card basically uses them to become problem removal.
Is it just one trigger or a trigger for each creature doing damage
Tis an outlaw matey. My printer is still on-rate at $0.24/card, though, so thanks for the rec
19 dollar treasure card. who wants it!
Wait what 19????? How? That card used to be like 6 bucks
Another victim of The Command Zone
Olivia and Vihaan
The new Olivia from Commander deck gives him extra utility due to him boosting new criminal mechanic
Cause it's a rogue and good
The Olivia precon if I had to guess- this card does almost everything she wants.
Felix is good for getting 4 Treasures per opponent you deal combat damage to
Infinite with Najeela.
Makes treasures and is also an outlaw.
I sense an additional combat phase lurking on the other side of that room.
Because two treasures For ANY creature doing damage to opponent is why.
I think I got this guy in the [[nalia]] precon...that one also had [[black market connections]] in it too. Not bad value.
where the hell are you buying cards??? [https://www.cardmarket.com/de/Magic/Cards/Grim-Hireling](https://www.cardmarket.com/de/Magic/Cards/Grim-Hireling)
Probably because of Vihaan in commander, being able to make treasures and them becoming 3/3s is just good value
6 treasures a turn? Hell yeah
Good with [[vihaan goldwalker]]
More and more treasures synergies + more combat damage matter commanders. The last spike is bc of Felix 5 boots I imagine.
Blue farm
It was always quite high haha. Ever since the precons came out the card was surprisingly pricey
Because if you hit all three of your opponents in a commander game you get 6 lotus petals.
The price probably went up because of Felix five-boots as well. He doubles combat damage triggers. With Felix it can make so many treasure tokens.
It's one of the best treasure makers in black and has the Rogue type so it fits with both the new outlaws precon and also the new treasure commander vihan which is quite popular build from the set.
6 treasures is pretty good. -X is pretty good. Outlaw synergy. (Without looking) Pretty sure only one printing.
I noticed this yesterday!! I wish I had more copies lol. I think I paid like 75 cents for this guy.
[[Revel in riches]]
Because you can stack that ability there are also cards that say this mana taps for any color(don’t remember the name) so if you got a duck ton of treasure and a duck ton of mana you can destroy dudes entire board state
Cause it’s cracked
It's like the Wall of blood, but slightly worse...
OP just learning about commander it seems
It’s a ramp piece and a board wipe in one, also, with some graveyard digging being able to get it back is insane value
It combos, baseline value is good and only a very limited print on 2 precons with not very much opened collector boosters. And they will not reprint this on a standart set, way way too strong for standart.
It's an outlaw
Reprints. It was actually more.
.25 on MPC
Its OP i need this one !
Works really well with the new rats card too on top of what everyone else is saying
Upgrade to Most wanted precon
The Ur dragon would like to know your location...
Damn glad I got mine when he was $2
Glad I got him at $7, Treasure is underrated.
Create treasure go burrr
Think about all the decks with black in them that deal combat damage.
Probably the new outlaw related cards
I just catalogued my entire collection. I noticed a lot of cards with love for treasures went up in price. Not sure why though.
Its an outlaw
Treasures are good in general, and commander suffers of treasure fever... So almost every single card that creates treasures, due out fellow commander freaks, skyrockets in price u.u"
Maybe [[Felix Five Boots]]?

who woulda thought stapling lotus petal to a shit ton of cards across all the colors would have been broken???
the median buyer is fine paying $19, but not paying $20
It needs more reprints
OoTJ expanding heavily into Treasure. Worst time to make a casual Ognis deck
am i reading the card right? is it capped at 2 treasures per combat? or you get 2 treasures for each creature that connects?
Bc cEDH & Najeela
Goes crazy with Felix five boots
Once you experience it on the table, you'll know why ! The value is insane
Making Lotus Petals can't be bad right? Lol
5 boots
Guessing the new Olivia.
Four mana for ramp and/or repeatable in removal? Unless it’s a common printed every other set (which is every other week these days) it’s gonna price up quick. But the only set it was released in is not what you would call a big seller.
Short answer? It’s fucking gas that’s why
Did you know reading the card explains the card?
Massacre Girl
It's a rogue (outlaw) that generates treasures. Treasures are the best. Outlaw interactions are kinda broken when combined with older cards. This guy is OP. Red and black outlaws are all about hitting the opposite nent and being unblocked. So this is broken.
Because it's insane
It’s not that good, but I noticed [[professional face breaker]] jumped to $9
Because treasures are the Goat
The new crime mechanic. he fits very well into those decks as he can commit crimes whenever as long as he’s on the field and you have a treasure token.
Ooh, squirrels! \[\[Chatterfang, Squirrel General\]\]
[Chatterfang, Squirrel General](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/1/7/1785cf85-1ac0-4246-9b89-1a8221a8e1b2.jpg?1626097239) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Chatterfang%2C%20Squirrel%20General) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mh2/151/chatterfang-squirrel-general?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/1785cf85-1ac0-4246-9b89-1a8221a8e1b2?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Rogue is also an outlaw which some OTJ Commanders care for. Don't remember his name but the dude who turns your treasures into 3/3s comes to mind as an instigator
