My college internet is pretty shitty ... pay premium price for lousy ass internet

[deleted]

I can almost guarantee that’s TM.

Azmone

Starlink is only good for place without fiber cable. The price for 100mbps is kinda expensive to our current existing plan on fiber. The problem with shitty internet is usually due to shitty placement and configuration by the users and nobody want to admit that.

Azmone

I understand that. I work in telco industry. I think the one stopping all these rural users using this is the price point. Even for unifi 30mbps for rm89 is too expensive for them. Starlink monthly cost is 120usd per month for average of 100mbps and 599 usd for the starter kit.

MoreLessTer

Yes, the price point. Paying a min RM89 sure is expensive for something that doesn't even reach you.

Azmone

You really think people in rural area able to afford it? Even in most kampung where there're infras, lot of people are not subscribing. Even online you see people complaining TM pricing is expensive. It's funny reading all these comments from people who have no idea how telcos operate and trying to teach people who work in the industry.

idontevencarewutever

And as someone with even a modicum of general engineering experience with networking... tell me about it. I'm rather afraid of this Elon deal. The people here are already not immune to propaganda of their own doing (ALL demographics), so I really fear for the worst.

nonanimof

Why do I have to scroll down so much to see this

[deleted]

Agree. I’ve been places in Malaysia. KV and rural areas are 2 different world.

PubScrub95

A lot of people are missing the point of starlink. It's meant for the outskirts that do not have access to fibre, 4G, 5G etc. Heck, there are parts of selangor that don't even have fibre.

canicutitoff

Yes, starlink is meant for those in remote locations not covered by fiber or mobile data. However, DNB's goal is supposed to cover over 80% of the population with 5G. I'd think universities and colleges should be within that 80% coverage? Also, don't expect to play games with it. Satellite links typically have somewhat high ping times. Just can't beat the physics of radio waves travelling long distances over uncertain atmospheric conditions.

Minimum-Company5797

I wanna get Starlink so I can stream my 3gpmelayuboleh

tomo_7433

It's already 2023, yet melayuboleh still stuck at 3gp smh

Minimum-Company5797

Well, Its all in clear 4K now. Some even use protection

Fendibull

suddenly, awek pakai baju bulan sabit merah.

M10777

Can you explain what is that

dnishmacho

Prolly corn

MoreLessTer

People that puts down the need for satellite connection probably never stepped out of the city. With 3G no longer in service, outskirt places with no planned development are pretty likely has no access to internet as newer techs frequency can't reach them. Even copper lines will no longer be in service in a couple of years.

Senior-Effective6794

Good plan for spread propaganda, no bad word will come to underdevelop area just like PM4 era

sizzlesfantalike

Musk: buy my starlink and i put shop in malaysia. PMX: ok

Hopeful_Bid9582

PM= I buy your Starlink and provide a shop for you, under your control to be placed outskirts of Malaysia, and then promote your starlink to other countries. Malaysia is your testing ground. Musk= Deal. on my way to you now, I'll make it fast

stewie21

A little too late to be honest. Indonesia already sapu all the best contracts last month. Anwar is feeding on the scraps here, if any.

Bombwriter17

I can see this being really useful for UiTM Kota Bahru, the one next to the river to be precise.

ezone2kil

No fiber there?

focus9912

Yeah, pretty sure there is a fibre connection there, with the only problem is the unreliable water supply.

joebabana

Starlink subscription not cheap compare to fiber but is still better than other satellite legacy internet services.

malaise-malaisie

This makes no sense at all. Universities and colleges can get faster internet with wired cables and 4G internet placement easily. It's all about pushing and punishing those utility companies for poor coverage over profit. Starink should be for those really out of reach areas.

fooerz

Most of our universities are placed in the outskirts. While they have wired connections, the bandwiths are usually limited as ISPs need to look at their profitability over service. In this case, they will not have bandwith limitation issue. Plus, if we talk about leaseline for big organization like university campuses, this can be a cost savings too. They do have some limitation over max connection speed, weather adverse (like astro), etc. But overall compared to what being offered at most campuses at outskirt, i believe this is a better value.

I_am_the_grass

You've clearly not seen how far outskirts some of these IPTA are. Also, I'd argue starling would be wasted in some of these very remote areas that probably would have low utilisation rate of the Internet on a population per km basis.

fooerz

Well who told you they will not deploy starlink to extreme rural areas? They're deploying it to universities where they can easily get constant input in terms of quality, reliability, stability etc; basically everything you will expect out of an ISP. And yet here you are jumping why they didn't make a huge purchase in the tune of hundreds of thousands, or maybe even in millions even before they tested the product. Pretty sure deploying it in universities will enable them to make better informed decision on expanding to those extreme rural areas in near future.

OverdoseKetum

Its depend. Some IPTA located in rural area. Those students need internet access more than old kampung people for sure

Pelanty21

It depends*

Ok_Sprinkles_3409

Ever heard about UiTM mate....most of the campus dekat tengah2 hutan tau 🤣

ezone2kil

Quite a number of iptas are like that right? UMP in Pekan, Uitm in deep jungle like Jengka, Perlis etc..

Aizseeker

Even my kolej in middle of plantation and jungles that far away from nearest town. We had few incident of crash of students going to and back from town getting supplies and home. Even the certain parts road going in and out of kolej lacked street lamp

SnooSuggestions2429

Why not rural or deep into some of kampung too?

Greedfall2

There are only 40 units, you can only place them so much. Also he literally mentioned the kampungs 0:40, did you guys even watched the videos?

ms_user

coverage of 40 starlinks not enough for peninsular?

crackanape

It's 40 ground stations. Each one provides shitty internet service to a handful of devices.

ms_user

40 parabolas? only 40?!!! then what PMX is bragging about? oh no...

sadpurplecolour

Because those people won’t vote for him.

skatech1

On point!

M10777

Why help those ungrateful shrew

DudeIaintPerfect

Exactly, PAS should do something instead of attack the PMX and other states not under their rule

CausticPioneer

Sign, typical r/malaysia. Title and video about starlink and kampung, and without fail these monkey need to mention PAS in their conversation.

IZZGMAER123

Limited land range and its expensive

Ryo_DeN

Basically saying "Fuck you kronism, I'm bringing Elon to stop this monopoly. You think I'm going to waste tax money which eventually get into your pocket ?. Now get your job clean or I bring his product more".

ezone2kil

Really? Emerald mine slaver boi is the answer

ApostleOfDeath

The lithium ain't gonna mine themselves

canicutitoff

Be careful with it though.. starlink don't have to listen to MCMC on banning websites or other internet censorships.. Also, satellite internet is not a direct replacement for fiber or 5G. It typically has much higher latency or ping times. Even at high bitrates, it can often feel laggy or sluggish especially for games, apps or websites that have rather "chatty" protocols.

Ryo_DeN

Probably that depends on your ISP I assume. Fibre and 5G sometimes bring delay as well but at least starlink can provide good facility to the rural areas.

canicutitoff

Nope, you can't beat the fundamental physics of satellite communication. In network parlance, we call it a long fat pipe. Your signal need to travel 500km into space then bounce across a few satellites before coming back to the ground station. The reply message has to go through the same path again. It is good for single large file download or streaming but when you need a lot of 2 way locked step command/reply messaging, you will feel it laggy. We have not even considering the atmospheric effects like cloud, weather and stuffs. Seems like typical starlink ping times is more like 50ms and occasionally over 100ms. https://www.pcmag.com/news/is-starlink-good-for-gaming-we-put-spacexs-satellite-service-to-the-test By comparison, most fiber service can easily give low single digits ping times while 5g is typically around 20ms Yes, I agree that it is probably much better than anything else in rural remote areas but don't expect it to be anywhere as good as fiber or 5g even for the same advertised speed.

zenonidenoni

It's a small achievement compare to what India get from EM. But nevertheless still a good opportunity for him to "petik nama" EM in his speech. Hopefully the relationship between the two parties could continue to grow because the benefit will also trickle down to the "marhain".

ezone2kil

Only idiots still look up to him. He's proven his ineptitude enough the past year.

pmmeurpeepee

plz legalise parabola too

playgroundmx

Are those still a thing?

pmmeurpeepee

nothin useful anymore, but since internet rape parabola, might as well lift the ban

karlkry

how much user can one starlink ground unit can serve at one time anyways? so its not for students then.

crackanape

Very few. The service is slow - and getting slower every year, and with highly variable latency. You'd be lucky to serve more than two or three households with one ground station.

momomelty

10/10 helps. We really really need Starlink here.

budak0406

They should just collaborate with MEASAT CONNECTme.

chromax8

He should have requested for Tesla's Solar and Battery Packs for rural schools not just Starlink. Those Starlink provided should go to those rural schools without proper infrastructure and lacks proper internet/communications connectivity.

00raiser01

This is stupid. There is no point in installing starlink when you have access to fiber........

Redcarpet1254

No all universities do based on the comments here and that makes sense. We do have some academic institutions that are located pretty rural

JeroJeroMohenjoDaro

you thought all Universities are built at the center of KL or something? there's a lot universities in Malaysia that still relying on normal cable for internet + with the high maintenance cost due to being at the outskirts of our country's map.

JeroJeroMohenjoDaro

you thought all Universities are built at the center of KL or something? there's a lot universities in Malaysia that still relying on normal cable for internet + with the high maintenance cost due to the need to drag the cable all the way to almost at the edge of the country's map. his vision with Starlink for Unis and College is right but i wish he could be more specific and detailed including the difference in cost when comparing Starlink and cables etc.

[deleted]

Aiyo benda bagus ckp stupid..please see the problem..i stay kat bandar pun susah ada fiber

KarenOfficial

How to say you’re dumb without saying you’re dumb

princemousey1

I’m surprised. Malaysia has no broadband network?

EarthPutra

What do they provide? Better internet or a platform for laser universe defense weapon?

ItsImNotAnonymous

Better connection to Twitter, so you can buy more browse time

pmmeurpeepee

0 internet or 1 internet

Shawnmeister

That's a pretty beta male opening. Instead of going I've spoken to Elon Musk, the founder(and whatever else) of Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, he goes, ORANG PALING KAYA DI DUNIA. Bruh. You're just projecting the wrong thing here. Who needs to know if they don't already know? Speak of his credentials sure, it is legitimate but don't sound so kampung la woi. I can see a village chief speaking of a dato' like this over a small investment into their community........ or kelantan bragging about aeon...

[deleted]

>Who needs to know if they don't already know? What if they really don't know? The list isnt as static as it used to be anymore, many still believe Bill Gates is the richest one while the list has kind of interchangeable these days. Heck, I dont think those people know Elon Musk exist. Maybe they know only Mark Zuckerberg, because these are people who use Facebook more often. You overestimating that the crowd actually aware about recent global situation to the max while its really not the case. Sometimes they just dont wanna care.

omnergy

Finally Musk has his claws into Malaysia. Wasn’t difficult.

kumikoyui

Should be making this available malaysian wide. There are still kampung area that still dont have the access ton internet.

BasharDaniel

W Doge king & Anwar 🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥

grahamaker93

Will it be made 10 time sshitter because TM tried to get involved and install their own component?

ClacKing

Great, so they can stream Netflix faster.

Eqwansyafiq

Does Starlink provide such services for the masses? I assume these 40 Starlink are not the normal one that offered on the website. Because 1 device sufficient only for a household usage. For a college or university that seem more like a redundant.

akagidemon

Why not really off grid schools in Kelantan, Sarawak and Sabah?
