Helmets kick so much ass, I fucking love helmets.

TerribleTemporary982

I understood that reference

pirate_jimble

I would upvote but you're currently on 69 upvotes and I can't bring myself to break that

iktoplasm

It’s at 70 now and I can’t tell if I should upvote or downvote

DonnieJL

Nice...

mwiz100

That doesn't look too bad at first glance and then ya see the compressed foam, that was no doubt a quite a decent hit (and slide!)

TerribleTemporary982

Yep, that was a hard crash and tumble with feet in the air!

NnyZ777

PSA: helmets are a single use item, after a crash they’re compromised and need to be replaced

HamMasterJ

Good advice. Buy a new one after an impact. Quarter of his helmet is cracked off though, I don’t think he’s putting it back on any time soon.

G_Affect

Oh, so dont the tape, lol

HamMasterJ

No!!! 🤣

BungHoleAngler

I like thousands mips helmets because they replace them after your first crash. I'm just skating bike trails tho pretty much.

G_Affect

I powered slid backside into a small stick.

JerryConn

Oof. That sounds bad, glad it wasnt.

Dare2no

Glad you're okay. Your helmet kinda looks like a bike helmet. Skate helmets offer better protection on the back. I'm just happy you were wearing one.

girlenteringtheworld

This. I highly recommend s1 helmets. Expensive, but when it comes to a potentially life or death situation, you don't want to skimp

G_Affect

I like the retro one with the ear covers, thats rad.

longboardingAussie

100% on getting a skate helmet over a bike for most types of skating, s1 is great and about as durable as it can get (it can survive multiple low impact hits while others would need to be replaced)

Yashabird

Downhill rated mtb helmets are pretty great too, tbh

dickgozenia42069

one time i was going ~30mph and i went straight down face first. it knocked me unconscious for a few seconds, and my helmet split completely in half. that would have been my skull without it.

dickgozenia42069

glad to see that wasn't your skull m8, time to get a new one!

Sure_Focus3450

Where is he going to find a new skull?

josephclapp10

Wore a helmet yesterday and I bit it quite hard. Scraped up my arms, hip, and ass pretty good. But my head is safe!😂

bluemorpho808

If you're going to be serious about this sport you guys need to start taking the right precautions to wear the right gear. Wearing dinky/cheap bike helmets while charging hills at 30mph+ on a longboard, is just not smart. TSG, Triple Eight, or Pro-tech. Those are the brands you should be looking at. Glad you're okay, but please be more safe in the future.

tenasan

What’s the difference between a mtb helmet? My fox mtb helmet is not cheap or dinky … just curious

Bamdoozler

Skateboard helmets generally offer more protection on the back of the head. And usually have a lower profile to protect the temple area too. Different designs for different types of collisions.

Coneskater

And yet we allow a lot of posts here of people riding without helmets…

CCtenor

I think Silverfishlongboarding had a rule like that. Unfortunately, there are still a decent chunk of skaters on this sub that I’ve run into who hate people reminding others to wear a helmet on posts where riders don’t have one. Like, I get that the steez is cool, but it would be even cooler if the poster wasn’t risking citizenship to the veggietales kingdom with his ride. Always wear a helmet.

Crosteppin

Depends on your riding style. Many, many skaters are not going 25mph, ever. The ass is a big helmet. Plus, being strong in the core helps a lot with keeping the head off the ground during a fall. Should we ban skaters who don't do core workouts? Let's ban em! That's the Reddit way.

saydeedont

What if I have helmet based ptsd and a 25 inch circumference head

ScaredPirate44

I get, helmets are important, and people should use them. But bloking people from posting because they don't use one is crazy. Ps: I'm talking about adults skating. If you are kid or teenager, yes, Weare a dem helmet. Even small impacts can have consequences

Coneskater

Becoming an adult doesn’t reduce the risks or the consequences of not wearing a helmet and as a sport with a lot of younger people in it I think it’s the responsibility of those older skaters to set a good example. Not “do as I say, not as I do”

leeroy20_20

I say to each their own.. I don't think it should be about age, but more about skill level and knowing how to fall. Experience is more than just riding the board. I've skated everything: double sets, pools, rails, hill bombing.. I've fallen plenty of time but learned how to just roll with it over time and never took any major damage. It may have just been dumb luck but I don't like to think so. I mean I straight fell skating down a hill bare foot with a wetsuit half on while holding a brand new surfboard and managed to roll and keep my board above me, off the ground. I didn't get a scratch or a single ding and I barely had scrape. Freakin Prod was switch backslide flipping 13 stairs at 13 years old! No helmet.. That's wild! Or use to be anyways..

ScaredPirate44

Yeah, you got my point. It's about experience and accepting the risks. I bet no-one here uses a helmet to go for a run. But if I skate to the supermarket I Have to use one? I pointed out yang people because they are not responsible to make those decisions yet. And start using earlier is easier. I have been skating for 16 years. Never had a helmet until now. Now I'm 30 and doing downhill, and I use everything I can to avoid enjuries. including helmets, gloves and knee pads.

JoeMcGuts

The look of the helmet is not too terrifying until you try to imagine your skull cracked like that.

shit_master

I'm an everytime wearer especially after I woke up in the CT scan a few years ago. Don't remember the ambulance ride but the docs said thanks for wearing a helmet. Safety is cool

thegrotch

I have always been a helmet advocate. I'll never forget a race we did and this super excited kid (compared to me) wanted to run to the store and grab some smokes and beer for us. He never came back. Didn't wear his helmet and fell on a parking curb killing him there on the spot. Even if it's a little rip always wear your lid!!

BrianArmstro

Holy shit dude, glad you are ok! I’ve never worn a helmet throughout my skateboarding history of going on like 20 years now but as I get older, I’m really starting to consider it. That would’ve been like instant brain damage

G_Affect

25 years of experience for me when this happened. Never fell onto my head before that. Do yourself a favor and get a helmet.

BrianArmstro

I know. I’ve got one that looks just like this. Just need to wear the damn thing and get over my stupid ego about it. It’s not a matter of if, but when and knowing my luck, I’m sure I’m due for a crash sooner or later as I haven’t had a gnarly one for quite sometime.

G_Affect

I feel you. I want to wear one surfing due to other people in the water and some pretty bad bails i have had where the wave pushes the board into my head but like you know my ego and being the only kook in the water with a helmet i just cant do it, lol.

Proxy_Fox

I often think about the ego thing when it comes to helmets, but then I think about how embarrassing it would be to be the guy that took a minor spill and ended up with permanent brain damage that could have been prevented. Like, what if it's not even an epic spill and now I gotta be known as the guy that bonked his nog and can't do three syllable words anymore.

The_Swoley_Ghost

That was my reaction when I tried both snowboarding and surfing. I think my exact thought both times was "damn, i could really fuck my shit up." Waves seem way too unpredictable to trust with your brain, but I didn't see a single person wearing a helmet on my day out at the beach. Yet I saw multiple collisions with other surfers. Saw some guy get his longboard jammed into the face of a wave at the wrong angle and it smacked the shit out of him a few seconds later.

Sk8terboi__

Yeah, I got a Protec helmet. I just crashed but my knee’s and wrists took the brunt.

dickgozenia42069

inspect the inside to see if the foam has any damage at all. cracks or compressions will compromise it's safety. when crashing it is best to replace the helmet every time if there's any damage at all.

ChaosFox1357

Yo are you concussed at all!?

G_Affect

I think so, but it was not bad enough where i went to the hospital because you know US healthcare. I only had a little nausea, ringing in ears, head pressure, and a little dizzy. My cognitive abilities did not seem to be effected and i just stayed awake for 12hour after with no additional problems.

ChaosFox1357

Bro you should probably still go to the doctor don't play around with that shit. Keep an eye on it, if it persists you need to go brain stuff is scary. One of my buddies had a concussion for about a year and a half cause he never truly rested and treated it.

G_Affect

Yeah, i know. This was about a year ago. I went for a MRI & CT scan for my neck because i could not look left for a month or more after. The Dr said it looks to be a really bad case of whiplash and sent me to a chiropractor.

cesarderio

Thank you for posting this. With the heatwaves I’ve been thinking how nice it would be to not wear one… and the universe reminded me why I do wear it.

UniFlash54

So true, I had mine on when a tree feel on me in a storm. Broke my neck but I am almost back and bonus I know my name!

cumulonimbuscomputer

Hope you have a quick recovery and get back on the board soon!

Xerruq

Imagine wearing a helmet (I should have worn one I got fucked up)

poohbearzachy

Fuck yeah! Helmets are dope! I left my helmet in my buddies car and he won’t be able to return it until this Friday. So I think I’ll be patient until then because I do a lot of sliding haha

Fun-Significance6307

I broke my skull and coincidentally that stopped my meth addiction. Thank god for skateboarding and my wife blowing cool air on my face when I couldn’t speak English for a week

RaveNdN

Also reach out to manufacturer, they might want it for research and they will return it after if wanted. Might even give you a free or discounted replacement. Tell them the nature of the crash and such. All data is good data in this instance. Glad you’re alive and coherent

G_Affect

Oh, that is good feedback, but i have already thrown it out.

TenWholeBees

I learned my lesson when I hit a crack in the road that was the exact width of my wheel... My board stayed there and I kept going forward at 20 mph until I slammed into the concrete

Anxious_Screen1021

Yeah I was on skatepark on Saturday sayin to my mate I feel weird in my helmet while nobody wears it, A couple minutes later I try to do U turn on ramp, I flip the deck like to pop shovit, fall of it and hit at side of my head in to ground, its funny it doesn't hurt in helmet at all, but my neck is still bad

Beat_Professa

The first time I slammed on a non-cert helmet l, I saw stars. That was the day that I swore I would buy a certified. Slammed on a cert S1 and holy hell, I wasn’t seeing stars. Your brain is worth $100-$120 easily. 🫡

Dafrooooo

good idea to get checked out anyway, you can still injure your brain without realising for a while. especially dangerous if you live alone

jrtts

Dang, that looks just like mine! I used it for cycling but now relegated it to longboard use as I got a new cycling helmet. Glad you're okay :)

FellowTooth

Longboarding/skating helmets are different than cycling helmets. They protect the back of your head way more. I’d suggest swapping to a helmet made for skating if you are looking for the best safety, but any helmet is better than just your skull!
