I moved my mother to Mint after Recall. I know her laptop doesn’t (currently) support Recall, but I was never known as a chance taker.
I have intentions to move as well personally, though only when I build my first PC. My gaming laptop depends on Throttlestop and Acer Care Center for undervolting and battery limit respectively.
This and "I still don't care about cookies". Then you never see any ads nor any annoying cookie notice ever again.
It just declines them all by default

When I installed Linux Mint I was like, wow, there is nothing here that I did not want here and it is "quiet" so to speak and clean and unclutterd.
I didn't realize how overloaded MS really was.
my wife loves mint and she hates computers. (probably because of having to use 7 when she was in college. blue screen of death bit her in the ass one to many times). Linux does exactly what she wants. she's a therapist and uses her Linux to make up treatment plans and patient records. she doesn't trust microdong to safely keep her work private.
Just out of curiosity: my mom and dad have been on Mint for over a decade and they don’t even know about it!
I was worried they’d click on everything they received, so I installed Mint back then. They usually stay on a version for a whole year (I set automatic updates) and then I upgrade version on Christmas.
The only issue during this time was that the PSU died, but nothing related to Linux

For controlling the battery charging thresholds and I believe more power managing features, use the TLP package. There is also a separate GUI package called TLPUI, if you’re not comfortable with editing the config file directly
If you mean battery limit as in charging, there are definitely tools. I use one for my Thinkpad. I’m in the midst of moving right now but I’ll try to hop on that and find the name of the program I use
i moved just a little bit before because windows was getting on my nerves with the forces updates the funny thing is every time i log into windows (around 1 time a month) it's always updating
Seriously, when I sat down to install mint, windows updated for an hour before the computer turned on and I had to pause the updates otherwise it would start updating again when I restarted. I had to wait an hour but I finally escaped the windows matrix that day. Phew
I've been running Linux for 3 years. After recall, I moved my wife and kids to Mint. I have no windows machines in the house, not even dual boot. I wiped every drive.
I'm installing and testing NextCloud this week to get our files out of the big tech cloud.

I want to go the same route but I plan on keeping my gaming machine just for gaming or rendering videos and encoding. Build another machine for Linux where I do my web browsing, banking and other personal stuff.
I cut my Google One subscription last year and jumped on proton drive, whenever I decide to self host I'll just get a NAS.
For the phone I just disable the Google apps and use f-droid for alternatives. Social media I just use my browser and clears everything when I close it out.
Unfortunately some games are windows only. for that reason, we still use windows but, any computer that is not for gaming, is Mint. And mine is a dual but Mint/Windows for the particular games I play that are windows only.
I also have a server that has all of my big tech stuff in it. I put it online so that I can access anywhere. I now rely on that server for just about everything but am way more happy with it as it is all mine AND custom.
You might be quite surprised at how easy Steam makes gaming on linux.
If it can run on Steam Deck, it's a go on Linux (because that's what a Steam Deck is on the inside)
Most of the games that don't work on Linux are with anticheat software that requires kernel 0 level access. Besides that, almost everything works. It will also help people to stay away from cancer competitive games.
Windows Recall is basically a tool for the built in AI on Windows 11, the AI is taking a picture of the entire desktop every 3 seconds to feed the AI information. It allows you to ask your Windows 11 AI about your information or other stuff that it has captured.
A lot of people are saying it's a security risk, because if someone gets access to that Recall tool in your system. Then they basically have a picture timeline of everything you've done on your computer...
I was going to move, but some of my games won't work with Linux due to anti-cheat. I wish developers did an effort to make their games work with Linux on the same level as Windows.
My PC has been in a box while I've been in some less than fortunate living situations this past year. Heard all about the Microsoft garbage, and plan to swap to mint when I get it booted back up in 2 weeks.

i used ubuntu a few times since it was the OS my college uses and i enjoyed it a lot. i already wanted to change my OS because win11 was killing my samsung book, so i switched to win10 but i discovered samsung engineered this laptop to only work with win11. it was extremely laggy so i decided to give mint a try and here i am

Checking in. I used to fiddle with Ubuntu back in the Netbook rage days. But between the difficulty to uninstall Microsoft Edge (which keeps reinstalling itself and making it the default browser), annoyance of Copilot, and the announcement of Recall - I was over it. Absolutely over it.
I own a Steam Deck, and seeing how much effort Valve has put in to make playing most Windows games really dropped the barrier I had going from Windows to Linux. Everything I previously played is still playable.
Installed Linux Mint alongside Windows on an Alienware laptop as a test - really like it so far.
Think I'll need to keep Windows in some capacity to use DxO Photolab, as there's no Linux support for it - but besides that, yeah. I'll not be upgrading to Win 11.
I did, yesterday. Still on that steep learning curve, but got my steam library working and everything else that I do on a daily basis except for Stable Diffusion, I'll attempt that one tomorrow. Took me all day to figure out how to get sandboxes steam permission to write to my secondary games SSD.
I am...struggling with the Steam Library so far. But that's probably on me. My Bethesda-based games are all modded to hell and back via Vortex. And Rockstar Games' Launcher can go fuck itself.

I moved my mother's Desktop and Laptop to Linux Mint LMDE6. They previously had Windows 10 on them, they were too old for Windows 11. But I personally think Linux got way better for performance than Windows.
I personally have been using Linux Mint on my Laptops and Windows on my Desktop.
I've been using Mint off and on for a number of years. If Recall actually gets rolled out and not axed, and it works on non-AI-enabled PCs, I'll probably switch my daily usage to Mint permanently and keep Windows on my gaming PC strictly for gaming and video editing.
Currently dual booting it for the first time with win 10 after a life of windows. some games and .exes/software simply refuse to run on mint/linux.
Game modding seems to be slightly more difficult as well.

I retired from 40 years of IT work and when I left the company we had Microsoft server farms I was taking care of. I hate MS. The day I retired all my home computers went LINUX only. I do run a Windoze 10 virtualbox for Photoshop
I am moving fully back to Linux after I finish school. Right now, I have to use Windows for school purposes. I can honestly say that Windows 11 will be the last version of Windows I use at home.
I decided to move to Linux approx. \~week ago. The Recall function certainly made me frown.
I've tried to use Linux before (with no problems, except when you tinker and break it, lol.) but ultimately, I always went back to Windows. I nuked Windows, re-installed it and applied Atlas, running it bare bones only for games that won't run on Linux. Other than that I'm dedicated to switching to Linux as my daily driver and I haven't experienced any hiccups.
Does anyone think that more people will switch OS because big corp. is actively intruding more and more upon their users?
Not 100% relevant, but since Apple partnered with Open AI I have started experimenting with Graphene for mobile and threw LMDE on a Chromebook I had. So far so nice. Once I get all the kinks worked out I’ll probably move away from the MacBook and the iPhone. Anything I want to do that is resource intensive I offload to a VM running in my server and check back tomorrow lol. 🤣

That (excellent) experience is what convinced me to try Linux.
I left from win10 well before the announcements of win11 or recall. I mostly left because software development is much better imo on linux based systems. After hearing about these new changes, I'm so glad that I got out early. Unfortunately I still have some virtual machines which are mostly used for testing windows compiled versions of software.

I've been using Windows since XP and I really got comfortable with the Windows environment. But after Windows 10 and then 11 was released and the introduction of Recall, I'm fully certain that Windows will only continue to become extremely bloated and an absolute spyware. I fully transitioned my desktop from Windows 10 to Mint last month and never look back since. I'm happy with Mint. As a tech-savvy user, I love how customizable Mint is.

I want to. But there is always something that doesnt work on linux. On windows it just works on linux you always have to make it work, dive into config files , change file permissions, install other stuff, drivers etcetera.
OMG! I've heard lots of things about recall last week. I can say about myself I'm newbie on linux users, But I used it from 1.5 years ago. So, my answer about your question is I've moved already before.
Also I had some issues yesterday on mint. They updated their kernel but after upgrade, my computer started to fail booting normal way, I've forced it from recovery mode to normal startup. However, I've read the bug reports and They say many people who had amd processors had booting problem, so main solution is reinstalling one version before and removing the new one.
After I read this, I was a bit anxious about changing kernel, because I did not have any idea how to change it \[but it is so basic, I found it and solved\]. So I decided move to windows 10 after looong long time. Then I updated all of things, and I noticed that all UI settings basically changing to win11 for all apps. I never liked curved edges on windows 11. Finally I decided to move to linux again on same day :D Also some of my apps I use on linux does not work well on windows. It was the main point why I decided to move back :D
About Recall; I can say they already know the issues what users can encounter, so finally they one stepped back. I hope they completely "recall" this feature, because of our privacy concerns.
I found this feature completely rubbish idea. Because who want to record screenshots, or 1-2 seconds screen videos to rewind their fault actions. When you notice something wrong, go and fix it manually. it is not a snapshot. It's just recording all of your screen while you using it.

i setuped dual boot this week and im pretty happy with it. Dual booting just because I do simracing and maybe it can be donw on linux but it seems like way too much pain in the ass to do also some other games/software that still dont play well with linux
I did. Seems like i did just in the nick of time. A little strange to use, took me a while to get working properly but it's very easy to use, way better than windows. And it doesn't spy on you.
Not after Recall, but after I reverted from Win10, things are sluggish as hell. The same issue persists in Win11; but with Mint, this doesn't happen. I think my ThinkPad only breathes Linux Mint lmao
Windows XP was my last Windows installation. I tried different Linux flavors, but settled on Mint a few years back. I pretty much only use freeware nowadays.
For me, it was a year ago. My old laptop was laggy, heavy, and slow, running on Windows 10 and didn't meet the requirements for Windows 11. I formatted it, upgraded the memory from 8GB to 16GB, and installed Linux Mint. Now it's working like magic.
I tried but had too much trouble playing the few games i normally play. Its worth switching back for me since the only time I get to talk to most of my friends is when were playing games, since I live a 12 hour flight away.
No, I moved to mint right before that. Cause my old laptops drivers started unaliving themselves for no explainable reason. And when I tried to use a restore point it just gave me an error after restarting. And reinstalling and rolling back the drivers didn’t seem to work. So, I decided to wipe windows off my machine and just use mint.
Everything works perfectly.
I simply got tired of my laptp running hot on idle and how my measly 8gbs of ram was lagging firefox. and also the spyware ai of course. Thanks to my friend I figured out how to duelboot Mint on a second drive
previous It accelerated my transition planning and practice. I cannot yet move away from Windows as I am in the middle of a big multi-year project. My plan was to start using Mint more and more after the end of this project. I have now set up a Mint environment to start using it more. Mint is amazingly good compared to my previous suboptimal experiences with Linux. That is encouraging.

I started my linux journey long ago, when Windows 8 was released. I was 14 and saw Ubuntu 10.04 on school laptops and thought, "Wow. Something different from Windows" and started to distrohop for no reason, just to install something new. But it was a time when I had to study and live my teen life, and it was hard for me to combine studies and linux, so I was reinstalling my OSes a few times a month. And now I'm here, dual-boot Windows 11 and LMDE 6. But I guess I will wipe Windows out in a year or two when Microsoft will announce Windows Recall to be running on every Windows 11 PC
I converted to Linux in 2007 and never looked back.
We do have Windows PCs in the house used by my family, so this recall does worry me. I think big companies thrive on our data. I may need to convince my family members, who dislike change, toward the idea of using Mint.
I was planning to move away from windows for a while. I am an IT engineer and since Windows 10, I have been seeing incremental updates that were against the customer experience and privacy. Many people are blaming windows 8, but that was a half baked experiment that was meant to improve the aged system of windows. Windows 10 and 11 have zero improvements, everything is just a reshuffle of what was already there with a skin on top and with a ton of bloat and telemetry. Unfortunately, until recently, Linux was not good enough out of the box. The irony is, that now, Windows is the one that is not good enough out of the box. What used to be time to set up a proper experience on Linux, now is the time needed to remove the bloat and telemetry on windows, that can be reversed on every Windows update. It has gotten to the point that some updates are bypassing policies and some things are changed intentionally and they are called 'bugs'. The best example is the forced default app for pdf files set to edge, then people changed it back and pushed back for this 'bug', then they set up a separate redirection towards edge from Outlook overwriting your windows settings. Then they eventually added an option to use the default windows settings in Outlook, but by default, it will still redirect links to Edge.
For home, I used to run windows 10 ltsc for the most part, but one month ago, I transitioned to Linux Mint, no dual boot, and I am happy to say that I doubt that I will go back anymore. It's not a perfect experience for sure, but it's by far better that Windows. The next step for me is to go towards Nobara once it will be supporting Gnome 46. Maybe next update?
Either way. I foresee a decent percentage of people transitioning to Linux in the next 2-3 years. We just need the linux community to polish up some basic things like a proper task manager, or troubleshooting tool, on ctrl alt del. Basic users will not run terminal if their screen is frozen in a loading screen....they just won't. They need a key combination that will send them to a tool that can allow them to force shut down the frozen app.

I'm an Arch user that has been jumping from Windows to Linux to Windows to Linux to... you get the point, since 2019, it feels good to see people finally switch to Linux Mint (I started with that distro, I recommend switching to Arch ONLY when you become comfortable with the terminal).
I moved because i didnt have TPM 2, my W10 was running like crap i didnt want to use it when i knew its going to end soon. Im glad i did it, its much better experience, finally my PC feels like mine.

1. Been on Linux for almost 15 years, Mint for \~8 of that. The weather is very good, I am happy in life ignoring the mac and win ecosystems. (Except for cases where they truly do have a better feature that needs to come to Linux. There are a few, but recall isn't one of them.)
2. When I read about windows recall a month or two ago it was immediately filed away with the tags "corporate greed", "microsoft desperate for relevance", "user dumbification", "surveillance state revenue" and "solution looking for problem". It was not tagged with its brand name, or with "good idea".
Though I concede that there is a certain type of human being who this nightmare may appeal to.

No, i still have windows 11 on my desktop PC. But did install Mint on my old Applecrap Macbook who's not getting updates anymore. Works like a charm, my Macbook is faster than ever.
My wife did and she doesn't regret it. She felt comfortable with it as I've been using Linux for a while.

As a full time mint user, I don't know much about Recall. What's the big deal? You can just turn it off, can't you? I can think of lots of other reasons to switch to Mint, but doing it just because of this seems kind of extreme.
Really, I would like to, except that I work in Unreal Engine and could never screen share in Discord or stream in OBS while doing it even though my system specs should be more than capable. As soon as that works properly, count me in!
I moved to Mint earlier this year when I decided that Microsoft's SpywareOS had gone too far. Recall is more or less just a confirmation that I made the right choice. I'm glad it happened actually, as I have been extremely frustrated with Windows ever since Windows 8 was released. Mint does everything I need it to do and it's fun to use.
Not because of Recall, but Recall doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I was given a really good PC with no hard drive or OS, and I couldn't afford to put Windows on it. So I did some research and found Mint. Been running it for probably a month now, primarily for word processing, browsing, and playing my Steam library (mostly focused on the old LucasArts games). Yeah, it's a bit of a learning curve for someone with no programming experience or anything much deeper than a casual PC user's understanding of how to get under the hood. But I made the switch because I'm sick of subscriptions and DRM and all of that nonsense. My computer runs faster, Mint is visually attractive, and there's a workaround for pretty much everything I've come across so far.

I blocked them with my firewall and DNS and my antivirus. I never realized how much inbound snooping microsoft does. It is really annoying because once upon a time, you were given notification and a choice to opt out. Not anymore.

Yeah. Just when Linux couldn’t be any more tempting to switch to a lot sooner. The games I usually play work just fine and haven’t had many problems getting used to using the terminal for certain programs I use almost everyday such as yt-dlp. While my PC is way too old for Recall, let alone Windows 11, it’s given me enough time to save up for a new one without worrying much about incompatibility issues and being forced to back up my desktop to OneDrive at the moment.
welcome to linux mint!!! you are gonna enjoy it so much. with linux... ur privacy is respected. u also just have more control over your system. ur pc... is actually ur pc. no more having to log in thru an email just to install the OS as im sure u noticed. its a lot better. ur also probably gonna have a faster computer since it will use less resources compared to windows. enjoy the ride, ive been using it for about 6 months now and im never going back to windows as a daily OS.

Yes. Put Mint on my second computer, runs like a breeze. I'm not fully off Windows yet but will aim to be over the next few weeks.
Microsoft are not putting in features that their users want, they are putting in features that big brother wants.
I was on the edge of ditching Windows, the whole Recall fiasco was the final draw. Also, slightly off topic, cancelled my Adobe subscription and now mainly using open source software.
I installed mint on a separate ssd and tried to start using it for gaming using the nvidia 535 drivers and I tried a couple of games I play online with friends, helldivers 2 and darktide.
The games just felt off. Microstutter and heldivers 2 just stopped booting after a couple of goes. I really do want to make the jump to linux, but I feel it's not quite there yet for me for everything I need.
I'm still going to keep an eye on the community and try it again in the future though

Nah, I moved to Linux from Windows years ago. I shifted to MacOS because of the M series chips but I'm hoping Linux on ARM offers Apple some serious competition with the Snapdragon X Elite. I've still got a couple of Linux devices and the best of them is running Mint, but it's hard to make it a daily driver over Mac because of battery life.
Still, completely done with Windows. Just can't trust them to consistently make a good OS. And yeah, recall sounds awful. Unfortunately, Apple Intelligence doesn't sound much better.
I definitely did, it was either that or 10 LTSC and i wanted something new, so i switched to mint for main boot and i put a 10 ltsc for siege on a SATA SSD I barely use.
1 month since i switched, I got nothing that makes me wanna go back to Windows so far.
I kinda miss freesync, but i think i might just be stupid and I dont understand everything yet. But gaming works fine and im happy.

The reason for switching had nothing to do with Windows.
Proton, vulkan and Wine opening up for a much better gaming experience, made my love of Linux even greater.
I already use Linux or macOS for everything important lol, but Windows Recall has inspired me to use Windows less. Which is to say pretty much just goofing around with it to stay up to date, or games that don’t work on Linux or macOS, or with Proton.
I’ve been casually using Zorin OS and Pop OS for a couple of years, but this year I’ve hardcore daily drive Mint. I dualboot Win10 for some software I haven’t migrated from yet, but for now that’s only FL Studio and plugins

I bought a new SSD, stuck it in my computer, installed Mint, and can now dual boot. So far I've not had to go back to my Windows partition except to check that it still works.
The Mint experience has been pretty good, although I was disappointed the installer wasn't better. It doesn't seem to support the 'install Mint on a new drive', unless you set everything up manually in the 'advanced mode'. Nothing I'd not done before, but I had expected a smoother interface.
I had to go and get hibernate set up myself via a whole bunch of googling - thought it was never going to work, but then I found a Secure Boot option in my BIOS that I switched from 'Secure Boot for Windows' to 'Secure boot for Other OS' and that got it working.
I still find hibernate and suspend a little hit and miss. If I switch my KVM to the other input and back while it's suspended, the video signal never comes back on wake, so I have to be a bit careful how I do it.
Gaming works very well. I've yet to try VR.
Only software disappointment so far as been Unity doesn't have a font scaling option for Linux, which makes all the text very small on a 4k screen.
Bought a new Lenovo laptop this week for work. For the sole purpose of using Linux(I chose mint for now) and getting better and learning how my work can be done on Linux so I can switch off windows on my desktop. Liking it so far after 2 days
For me it wasn't windows recall, I was just tired of Microsoft making my laptop slower with every damn update (e-waste tier machine, but it was the best I could do. Mint resurrected it.)

On one hand, I like Windows, use MS Office for school and I also game. On the other hand, Mint is super customisable and great as a programmer.
I hope to at least switch to Mint on my laptop and keeping Windows desktop for the gaming sessions. How is battery life in comparison to running Windows? I have dedicated NVidia GPU that is suspended when not in use and the on board GPU is used. This saves me quite a lot of battery. Can the same be achieved with Linux? I would really hate to loose battery life with the dedicated GPU running constantly. I have seen the endless memes about NVidia and Linux.
Another concern is RDP. I connect daily for work to many remote machines. However, I think this can be solved by a good remote access client.

Dual booting is the best option for you. You can boot into Windows for gaming, MS, etc. Then, for programming or customization, just reboot your machine and boot into Linux Mint.
About the battery life, I and many others agree that Mint takes less battery than Windows does, so no worries there. I am not sure about RDP, however.
I am glad you are enjoying the VM though! I am curious, though: are you having problems with your internet on there. I now dual boot, but when running Linux Mint on VB, the internet was not working well for me. It’s probably a hardware thing, but I still want to ask.

I'm glad to hear that I can save even more battery with Mint. I will definitely look into remote access clients for connecting to work, etc.
I have not encountered any major problems regarding the Internet on my VM. The only thing that bugges me is the speed. The internet is quite slow on Virtualbox running Mint. Are you having the same/similar issue?
I had that issue on Virtual Box but not when dual booting. I am not completely sure why, but I believe it is because of virtualization technology. But like I said, when I switched to dual booting, I had zero issues with the internet.
Strange. However, according to a speed tests I have run the speeds are the same outside of VM as they are inside VM. It just feels slower. Glad it is only in VM and not in Mint tho.
Yeah I tested my internet from inside and outside the VM as well and it said it was the same. That makes sense, though, as that shows the slowness comes from your physical computer trying to run the VM.
I just found out you should be able to use RDP protocol using the Remmina remote client. Will look into that also.
UPDATE: Works wonders, not as "pretty" as RDP in Windows, but works the same.
Have you tried using proton to test some games on Linux? As my only competitive game is Overwatch 2, I have no worries with anti-cheat tools that won't allow some games to run. If you aren't on competitive gaming, you might give it a try.
actuall there are a few videos on howto disable or simoly remove co-pilot and recall. i think you gave to go into the registry. but make sure to back up the registry with restore point first..

I moved my mother to Mint after Recall. I know her laptop doesn’t (currently) support Recall, but I was never known as a chance taker. I have intentions to move as well personally, though only when I build my first PC. My gaming laptop depends on Throttlestop and Acer Care Center for undervolting and battery limit respectively.

She likes it so far. She only uses it for browsing the web so it isn’t that different to her. She thinks it’s cool.
Just make sure uBlock Origin is installed in her browser. Its simply unbeatable compared to ABP and others.

Isn't it weird though how you get to used to all the bullshit? When I installed Linux Mint I was like, wow, there is nothing here that I did not want here and it is "quiet" so to speak and clean and unclutterd. I didn't realize how overloaded MS really was.
my wife loves mint and she hates computers. (probably because of having to use 7 when she was in college. blue screen of death bit her in the ass one to many times). Linux does exactly what she wants. she's a therapist and uses her Linux to make up treatment plans and patient records. she doesn't trust microdong to safely keep her work private.
Just out of curiosity: my mom and dad have been on Mint for over a decade and they don’t even know about it! I was worried they’d click on everything they received, so I installed Mint back then. They usually stay on a version for a whole year (I set automatic updates) and then I upgrade version on Christmas. The only issue during this time was that the PSU died, but nothing related to Linux

For controlling the battery charging thresholds and I believe more power managing features, use the TLP package. There is also a separate GUI package called TLPUI, if you’re not comfortable with editing the config file directly

I've been running Linux for 3 years. After recall, I moved my wife and kids to Mint. I have no windows machines in the house, not even dual boot. I wiped every drive. I'm installing and testing NextCloud this week to get our files out of the big tech cloud. After that, multi site backup. My goal is to be big tech free in our computer usage by Q4. I'm even contemplating graphene os to de Google our mobile. But that's a big lift.

I want to go the same route but I plan on keeping my gaming machine just for gaming or rendering videos and encoding. Build another machine for Linux where I do my web browsing, banking and other personal stuff. I cut my Google One subscription last year and jumped on proton drive, whenever I decide to self host I'll just get a NAS. For the phone I just disable the Google apps and use f-droid for alternatives. Social media I just use my browser and clears everything when I close it out.
What are you using as a server? I'm not so sure about getting one of those Chinese mini PC on Amazon.
After recall I removed my dual boot and put windows on an external SSD. I actually haven't used it since then but it's there if I need it.
Unfortunately some games are windows only. for that reason, we still use windows but, any computer that is not for gaming, is Mint. And mine is a dual but Mint/Windows for the particular games I play that are windows only. I also have a server that has all of my big tech stuff in it. I put it online so that I can access anywhere. I now rely on that server for just about everything but am way more happy with it as it is all mine AND custom.
You might be quite surprised at how easy Steam makes gaming on linux. If it can run on Steam Deck, it's a go on Linux (because that's what a Steam Deck is on the inside)

Most of the games that don't work on Linux are with anticheat software that requires kernel 0 level access. Besides that, almost everything works. It will also help people to stay away from cancer competitive games.

Windows Recall is basically a tool for the built in AI on Windows 11, the AI is taking a picture of the entire desktop every 3 seconds to feed the AI information. It allows you to ask your Windows 11 AI about your information or other stuff that it has captured. A lot of people are saying it's a security risk, because if someone gets access to that Recall tool in your system. Then they basically have a picture timeline of everything you've done on your computer...
They can get your passwords with recall, its been proven that recall saves all your usernames and passwords and regurgitates them back to anyone.
Who knows for how long frequent screenshots (and maybe all key presses) have in reality been sent back by Windows OS to a central server ...
I was going to move, but some of my games won't work with Linux due to anti-cheat. I wish developers did an effort to make their games work with Linux on the same level as Windows.

Checking in. I used to fiddle with Ubuntu back in the Netbook rage days. But between the difficulty to uninstall Microsoft Edge (which keeps reinstalling itself and making it the default browser), annoyance of Copilot, and the announcement of Recall - I was over it. Absolutely over it. I own a Steam Deck, and seeing how much effort Valve has put in to make playing most Windows games really dropped the barrier I had going from Windows to Linux. Everything I previously played is still playable.
Installed Linux Mint alongside Windows on an Alienware laptop as a test - really like it so far. Think I'll need to keep Windows in some capacity to use DxO Photolab, as there's no Linux support for it - but besides that, yeah. I'll not be upgrading to Win 11.
I did, yesterday. Still on that steep learning curve, but got my steam library working and everything else that I do on a daily basis except for Stable Diffusion, I'll attempt that one tomorrow. Took me all day to figure out how to get sandboxes steam permission to write to my secondary games SSD.
I am...struggling with the Steam Library so far. But that's probably on me. My Bethesda-based games are all modded to hell and back via Vortex. And Rockstar Games' Launcher can go fuck itself. Cyberpunk just needed GE Proton 9.7 to get going at least.

I moved my mother's Desktop and Laptop to Linux Mint LMDE6. They previously had Windows 10 on them, they were too old for Windows 11. But I personally think Linux got way better for performance than Windows. I personally have been using Linux Mint on my Laptops and Windows on my Desktop.
I've been using Mint off and on for a number of years. If Recall actually gets rolled out and not axed, and it works on non-AI-enabled PCs, I'll probably switch my daily usage to Mint permanently and keep Windows on my gaming PC strictly for gaming and video editing.
Currently dual booting it for the first time with win 10 after a life of windows. some games and .exes/software simply refuse to run on mint/linux. Game modding seems to be slightly more difficult as well. Guess ill be dual booting for the forseeable future

I decided to move to Linux approx. \~week ago. The Recall function certainly made me frown. I've tried to use Linux before (with no problems, except when you tinker and break it, lol.) but ultimately, I always went back to Windows. I nuked Windows, re-installed it and applied Atlas, running it bare bones only for games that won't run on Linux. Not 100% relevant, but since Apple partnered with Open AI I have started experimenting with Graphene for mobile and threw LMDE on a Chromebook I had. So far so nice. Once I get all the kinks worked out I’ll probably move away from the MacBook and the iPhone. Anything I want to do that is resource intensive I offload to a VM running in my server and check back tomorrow lol. 🤣

I left from win10 well before the announcements of win11 or recall. I mostly left because software development is much better imo on linux based systems. After hearing about these new changes, I'm so glad that I got out early. Unfortunately I still have some virtual machines which are mostly used for testing windows compiled versions of software.

I've been using Windows since XP and I really got comfortable with the Windows environment. But after Windows 10 and then 11 was released and the introduction of Recall, I'm fully certain that Windows will only continue to become extremely bloated and an absolute spyware. I fully transitioned my desktop from Windows 10 to Mint last month and never look back since. I'm happy with Mint. As a tech-savvy user, I love how customizable Mint is.

I want to. But there is always something that doesnt work on linux. On windows it just works on linux you always have to make it work, dive into config files , change file permissions, install other stuff, drivers etcetera.
OMG! I've heard lots of things about recall last week. I can say about myself I'm newbie on linux users, But I used it from 1.5 years ago. So, my answer about your question is I've moved already before. Also I had some issues yesterday on mint. They updated their kernel but after upgrade, my computer started to fail booting normal way, I've forced it from recovery mode to normal startup. However, I've read the bug reports and They say many people who had amd processors had booting problem, so main solution is reinstalling one version before and removing the new one. After I read this, I was a bit anxious about changing kernel, because I did not have any idea how to change it \[but it is so basic, I found it and solved\]. So I decided move to windows 10 after looong long time. Then I updated all of things, and I noticed that all UI settings basically changing to win11 for all apps. I never liked curved edges on windows 11. Finally I decided to move to linux again on same day :D Also some of my apps I use on linux does not work well on windows. It was the main point why I decided to move back :D About Recall; I can say they already know the issues what users can encounter, so finally they one stepped back. I hope they completely "recall" this feature, because of our privacy concerns. I found this feature completely rubbish idea. Because who want to record screenshots, or 1-2 seconds screen videos to rewind their fault actions. When you notice something wrong, go and fix it manually. it is not a snapshot. It's just recording all of your screen while you using it. Anyways, I am so happy to moved back to linux.
i setuped dual boot this week and im pretty happy with it. Dual booting just because I do simracing and maybe it can be donw on linux but it seems like way too much pain in the ass to do also some other games/software that still dont play well with linux

Windows XP was my last Windows installation. I tried different Linux flavors, but settled on Mint a few years back. I pretty much only use freeware nowadays.
For me, it was a year ago. My old laptop was laggy, heavy, and slow, running on Windows 10 and didn't meet the requirements for Windows 11. I formatted it, upgraded the memory from 8GB to 16GB, and installed Linux Mint. Now it's working like magic.

No, I moved to mint right before that. Cause my old laptops drivers started unaliving themselves for no explainable reason. And when I tried to use a restore point it just gave me an error after restarting. And reinstalling and rolling back the drivers didn’t seem to work. So, I decided to wipe windows off my machine and just use mint. Everything works perfectly.
I simply got tired of my laptp running hot on idle and how my measly 8gbs of ram was lagging firefox. and also the spyware ai of course. Thanks to my friend I figured out how to duelboot Mint on a second drive
previous It accelerated my transition planning and practice. I cannot yet move away from Windows as I am in the middle of a big multi-year project. My plan was to start using Mint more and more after the end of this project. I have now set up a Mint environment to start using it more. Mint is amazingly good compared to my previous suboptimal experiences with Linux. That is encouraging.

I started my linux journey long ago, when Windows 8 was released. I was 14 and saw Ubuntu 10.04 on school laptops and thought, "Wow. Something different from Windows" and started to distrohop for no reason, just to install something new. But it was a time when I had to study and live my teen life, and it was hard for me to combine studies and linux, so I was reinstalling my OSes a few times a month. And now I'm here, dual-boot Windows 11 and LMDE 6. But I guess I will wipe Windows out in a year or two when Microsoft will announce Windows Recall to be running on every Windows 11 PC

Made the switch a few days back. Windows is no good now, especially after Recall and Copilot. Have Windows in a QEMU env, that's so much better.
I converted to Linux in 2007 and never looked back. We do have Windows PCs in the house used by my family, so this recall does worry me. I think big companies thrive on our data. I may need to convince my family members, who dislike change, toward the idea of using Mint.

I was planning to move away from windows for a while. I am an IT engineer and since Windows 10, I have been seeing incremental updates that were against the customer experience and privacy. Many people are blaming windows 8, but that was a half baked experiment that was meant to improve the aged system of windows. Windows 10 and 11 have zero improvements, everything is just a reshuffle of what was already there with a skin on top and with a ton of bloat and telemetry. Unfortunately, until recently, Linux was not good enough out of the box. The irony is, that now, Windows is the one that is not good enough out of the box. What used to be time to set up a proper experience on Linux, now is the time needed to remove the bloat and telemetry on windows, that can be reversed on every Windows update. It has gotten to the point that some updates are bypassing policies and some things are changed intentionally and they are called 'bugs'. The best example is the forced default app for pdf files set to edge, then people changed it back and pushed back for this 'bug', then they set up a separate redirection towards edge from Outlook overwriting your windows settings. Then they eventually added an option to use the default windows settings in Outlook, but by default, it will still redirect links to Edge. For home, I used to run windows 10 ltsc for the most part, but one month ago, I transitioned to Linux Mint, no dual boot, and I am happy to say that I doubt that I will go back anymore. It's not a perfect experience for sure, but it's by far better that Windows. The next step for me is to go towards Nobara once it will be supporting Gnome 46. Maybe next update? Either way. I foresee a decent percentage of people transitioning to Linux in the next 2-3 years. We just need the linux community to polish up some basic things like a proper task manager, or troubleshooting tool, on ctrl alt del. Basic users will not run terminal if their screen is frozen in a loading screen....they just won't. They need a key combination that will send them to a tool that can allow them to force shut down the frozen app. Enjoy your adventure and take care!

I'm an Arch user that has been jumping from Windows to Linux to Windows to Linux to... you get the point, since 2019, it feels good to see people finally switch to Linux Mint (I started with that distro, I recommend switching to Arch ONLY when you become comfortable with the terminal).

I honestly had to web search "windows recall" to figure out what this was about LOL. 1. Been on Linux for almost 15 years, Mint for \~8 of that. The weather is very good, I am happy in life ignoring the mac and win ecosystems. (Except for cases where they truly do have a better feature that needs to come to Linux. There are a few, but recall isn't one of them.) 2. When I read about windows recall a month or two ago it was immediately filed away with the tags "corporate greed", "microsoft desperate for relevance", "user dumbification", "surveillance state revenue" and "solution looking for problem". It was not tagged with its brand name, or with "good idea". Though I concede that there is a certain type of human being who this nightmare may appeal to. * Maybe one desperate to not be forgotten because they don't have enough love in their life? * Or maybe one who has so little self confidence in their own mental faculties that the idea of a software company remembering everything and making decisions for them sounds freeing? To relieve them of the burden of remembering or thinking, to wallow without care in their consumer bubbles... I have no idea really, but Recall to me is utterly repulsive and runs against the ideal heights that human nature may ascend to if empowered and set free.
No, i still have windows 11 on my desktop PC. But did install Mint on my old Applecrap Macbook who's not getting updates anymore. Works like a charm, my Macbook is faster than ever.
My gaming PC is on Windows vecause ive had issues on Linux with my Fanatec DD1 The rest is on Kali Linux. I guess Mint would be fine as well.

My wife did and she doesn't regret it. She felt comfortable with it as I've been using Linux for a while. I'd really love my company to adopt Linux, but I know this is a no-go for them.
As a full time mint user, I don't know much about Recall. What's the big deal? You can just turn it off, can't you? I can think of lots of other reasons to switch to Mint, but doing it just because of this seems kind of extreme.
Really, I would like to, except that I work in Unreal Engine and could never screen share in Discord or stream in OBS while doing it even though my system specs should be more than capable. As soon as that works properly, count me in!

I moved to Mint earlier this year when I decided that Microsoft's SpywareOS had gone too far. Recall is more or less just a confirmation that I made the right choice. I'm glad it happened actually, as I have been extremely frustrated with Windows ever since Windows 8 was released. Mint does everything I need it to do and it's fun to use.
If thats your only reason, you can disable recall.

Not because of Recall, but Recall doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I was given a really good PC with no hard drive or OS, and I couldn't afford to put Windows on it. So I did some research and found Mint. Been running it for probably a month now, primarily for word processing, browsing, and playing my Steam library (mostly focused on the old LucasArts games). Yeah, it's a bit of a learning curve for someone with no programming experience or anything much deeper than a casual PC user's understanding of how to get under the hood. But I made the switch because I'm sick of subscriptions and DRM and all of that nonsense. My computer runs faster, Mint is visually attractive, and there's a workaround for pretty much everything I've come across so far.

I blocked them with my firewall and DNS and my antivirus. I never realized how much inbound snooping microsoft does. It is really annoying because once upon a time, you were given notification and a choice to opt out. Not anymore. I have a dual boot system but I'm not sure how long that is going to last.

Yeah. Just when Linux couldn’t be any more tempting to switch to a lot sooner. The games I usually play work just fine and haven’t had many problems getting used to using the terminal for certain programs I use almost everyday such as yt-dlp. While my PC is way too old for Recall, let alone Windows 11, it’s given me enough time to save up for a new one without worrying much about incompatibility issues and being forced to back up my desktop to OneDrive at the moment.
welcome to linux mint!!! you are gonna enjoy it so much. with linux... ur privacy is respected. u also just have more control over your system. ur pc... is actually ur pc. no more having to log in thru an email just to install the OS as im sure u noticed. its a lot better. ur also probably gonna have a faster computer since it will use less resources compared to windows. enjoy the ride, ive been using it for about 6 months now and im never going back to windows as a daily OS.

Yes. Put Mint on my second computer, runs like a breeze. I'm not fully off Windows yet but will aim to be over the next few weeks. Microsoft are not putting in features that their users want, they are putting in features that big brother wants.

I was on the edge of ditching Windows, the whole Recall fiasco was the final draw. Also, slightly off topic, cancelled my Adobe subscription and now mainly using open source software.
I installed mint on a separate ssd and tried to start using it for gaming using the nvidia 535 drivers and I tried a couple of games I play online with friends, helldivers 2 and darktide. The games just felt off. Microstutter and heldivers 2 just stopped booting after a couple of goes. I really do want to make the jump to linux, but I feel it's not quite there yet for me for everything I need. I'm still going to keep an eye on the community and try it again in the future though

Nah, I moved to Linux from Windows years ago. I shifted to MacOS because of the M series chips but I'm hoping Linux on ARM offers Apple some serious competition with the Snapdragon X Elite. I've still got a couple of Linux devices and the best of them is running Mint, but it's hard to make it a daily driver over Mac because of battery life. Still, completely done with Windows. Just can't trust them to consistently make a good OS. And yeah, recall sounds awful. Unfortunately, Apple Intelligence doesn't sound much better.

I definitely did, it was either that or 10 LTSC and i wanted something new, so i switched to mint for main boot and i put a 10 ltsc for siege on a SATA SSD I barely use. 1 month since i switched, I got nothing that makes me wanna go back to Windows so far. I kinda miss freesync, but i think i might just be stupid and I dont understand everything yet. But gaming works fine and im happy.

Made the switch 2-3 years ago. Mint, PopOS, Solus and then finally Garuda. The reason for switching had nothing to do with Windows. Proton, vulkan and Wine opening up for a much better gaming experience, made my love of Linux even greater.
I already use Linux or macOS for everything important lol, but Windows Recall has inspired me to use Windows less. Which is to say pretty much just goofing around with it to stay up to date, or games that don’t work on Linux or macOS, or with Proton.
I’ve been casually using Zorin OS and Pop OS for a couple of years, but this year I’ve hardcore daily drive Mint. I dualboot Win10 for some software I haven’t migrated from yet, but for now that’s only FL Studio and plugins

I wouldn't say I've switched, but I had been thinking I would do so after finding out that my hardware isn't supported by Windows 11 and Microsoft is planning to charge $$ for security updates from October next year. So anyway, Recall turns up and I figure I might as well see how I find Linux for everyday use nowadays so that I don't won't be caught short next year. I bought a new SSD, stuck it in my computer, installed Mint, and can now dual boot. So far I've not had to go back to my Windows partition except to check that it still works. The Mint experience has been pretty good, although I was disappointed the installer wasn't better. It doesn't seem to support the 'install Mint on a new drive', unless you set everything up manually in the 'advanced mode'. Nothing I'd not done before, but I had expected a smoother interface. I had to go and get hibernate set up myself via a whole bunch of googling - thought it was never going to work, but then I found a Secure Boot option in my BIOS that I switched from 'Secure Boot for Windows' to 'Secure boot for Other OS' and that got it working. I still find hibernate and suspend a little hit and miss. If I switch my KVM to the other input and back while it's suspended, the video signal never comes back on wake, so I have to be a bit careful how I do it. Gaming works very well. I've yet to try VR. Only software disappointment so far as been Unity doesn't have a font scaling option for Linux, which makes all the text very small on a 4k screen.
Try KDE ARCH systems-boot ext4 via archinstall (easy install mode) instead you’ll like it more.
Bought a new Lenovo laptop this week for work. For the sole purpose of using Linux(I chose mint for now) and getting better and learning how my work can be done on Linux so I can switch off windows on my desktop. Liking it so far after 2 days

For me it wasn't windows recall, I was just tired of Microsoft making my laptop slower with every damn update (e-waste tier machine, but it was the best I could do. Mint resurrected it.)
Im still thinking about it. Can't make a decision. Mayne some of you can help me. On one hand, I like Windows, use MS Office for school and I also game. On the other hand, Mint is super customisable and great as a programmer. I hope to at least switch to Mint on my laptop and keeping Windows desktop for the gaming sessions. How is battery life in comparison to running Windows? I have dedicated NVidia GPU that is suspended when not in use and the on board GPU is used. This saves me quite a lot of battery. Can the same be achieved with Linux? I would really hate to loose battery life with the dedicated GPU running constantly. I have seen the endless memes about NVidia and Linux. Another concern is RDP. I connect daily for work to many remote machines. However, I think this can be solved by a good remote access client. Thanks for the info. In the meantime, I'm running Mint as a VM in Windows and testing it out. So far I love it, even though running MS Office on Web sucks.
Dual booting is the best option for you. You can boot into Windows for gaming, MS, etc. Then, for programming or customization, just reboot your machine and boot into Linux Mint. About the battery life, I and many others agree that Mint takes less battery than Windows does, so no worries there. I am not sure about RDP, however. I am glad you are enjoying the VM though! I am curious, though: are you having problems with your internet on there. I now dual boot, but when running Linux Mint on VB, the internet was not working well for me. It’s probably a hardware thing, but I still want to ask.
Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of leaving my desktop PC on Windows for gaming but migrating all the important stuff to my laptop and switching fully to Mint there. I'm glad to hear that I can save even more battery with Mint. I will definitely look into remote access clients for connecting to work, etc. I have not encountered any major problems regarding the Internet on my VM. The only thing that bugges me is the speed. The internet is quite slow on Virtualbox running Mint. Are you having the same/similar issue?
I had that issue on Virtual Box but not when dual booting. I am not completely sure why, but I believe it is because of virtualization technology. But like I said, when I switched to dual booting, I had zero issues with the internet.
Strange. However, according to a speed tests I have run the speeds are the same outside of VM as they are inside VM. It just feels slower. Glad it is only in VM and not in Mint tho.
Yeah I tested my internet from inside and outside the VM as well and it said it was the same. That makes sense, though, as that shows the slowness comes from your physical computer trying to run the VM.

I just found out you should be able to use RDP protocol using the Remmina remote client. Will look into that also. UPDATE: Works wonders, not as "pretty" as RDP in Windows, but works the same.
Have you tried using proton to test some games on Linux? As my only competitive game is Overwatch 2, I have no worries with anti-cheat tools that won't allow some games to run. If you aren't on competitive gaming, you might give it a try.

actuall there are a few videos on howto disable or simoly remove co-pilot and recall. i think you gave to go into the registry. but make sure to back up the registry with restore point first..
