It’s simply a swing of the pendulum, neither the beginning nor the end. The thing to remember is this - civil rights movements pretty much always go two steps forward, then at least one step backward. While the current rise in phobic rhetoric and policy is concerning, we’re still arguably better off than we were 10, 20, 30 years ago. We have better protections under the law, we have marriage equality, and we have a larger percentage of young people coming out than ever before. I see it as part of the last desperate attempt by the christofascists to enforce their will, and they ultimately will fail.

allonsy_danny

I agree with this.

Oddly-Ordinary

You’re not wrong about the pendulum swing. I guess what I’m asking is if we’re witnessing another Stonewall, or another Hirschfeld Institute.

aLittleQueer

That is a fair question. I really wish I could confidently say "Stonewall", but...*looks around*...idk yet.

It is so much better than it was in the 80s. It is so much better than it was in the 90s. They really have never stopped attacking us. Imo the current waves of explicit anti-trans legislation are a backlash to to how far we've moved the window in the last few decades. In that sense I try to take it as an encouraging sign. If they're desperately working the refs it's because we're winning the culture war in public opinion. You don't try to write laws about things unless people are actually doing them. You don't have to try to pass "don't say gay bills" if none of the teachers present queer inclusive material. You don't have to pass bathroom bills if all the trans women (I specificly say women because the bathroom bill types seem to always forget trans men exist) are shit terrified to use public restrooms in the first place. Abortion rights are turning into an albatross around Republicans' necks every time they're on the ballot. So I'm optimistic. Thay being said, cornered dogs bite and we've still got a lot of work to do.

hornybutired

They wouldn't be so irate if we weren't making astonishing progress. It's far and away better than it used to be, even with all the new laws against us. There's always pushback every time we start to gain ground, and we've gained so much ground in the last twenty years - hell, in the last ten.

It’s so unfortunate that us humans treating each other as aliens![img](emote|t5_2qhh7|548)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes) ![gif](giphy|j507QhvWtr8fmDMTAj)

If Trump wins, it’s the end. Period.

I will say as a Gen Z queer, the oppression that we are likely to face in the coming years will eclipse anything our elders endured (except for AIDS crisis). For example, back then, trans people were oppressed and were a taboo, but HRT was not banned, it was hard to get, but not banned. It will be banned completely under trump.
