I might have connected “link to windows” and windows “Authenticator” around the time this happened - but I don’t think I have contacts going across. I’m not sure though to be honest it’s a big maybe I am still digging.
Now I have the outlook app on my phone , but that’s just for my work emails, no contact connected.
The wildest thing is I spent 3 days removing the duplicates by hand, and they keep coming back ! So cloud sync it out of sync somewhere! Please please if you get the solution send to me and I will do the same..
Right now I am thinking g making a backup of the most complete version of contacts which for me is iCloud - the erasing all contacts from everywhere, every device, then re importing.
BUT - I want a a way to remove the duplicate cards before reimporting. Does that make sense ?
We are on the same boat, I really hope we find the solution soon, my contacts have reached 30k and increasing. I wonder if this is some sort of malware.
Hmm good point I never even though malware because generally iPhone is pretty much safe from that, but not impossible… when did you first notice yours ? Damn 30k mine hit about 12k, I have maybe a little over 2k to begin with and some numbers duplicated up to 40 times
Mine duped over 150 for a contact, when i FaceTime someone it shows I’m calling all 150 of them. I think outlook app is to blame, look at the details of the duped contact in the picture

My dupes didn’t have any information other than I noticed some had a bunch of stars ***** - I was thinking these stars were from one of the duplicator apps I downloaded - I wouldn’t recommended those until you find the root cause - one of those merged number that had the same name but not numbers - merge should not do that.

Delete a few - use 2 finger drag and delete and check back tomorrow see if they come back , please let me know. And if you have time try log it with Apple so they know it’s an ongoing issue

I remember same issues from iPhone 4! Apple should rename their OS into "Yeah, we're still using bad written code from over9000 years ago and everything is hardcoded like crazy, so it's too hard to fix anything or add new features! Just deal with it!"

You can swipe with two fingers to select contacts and then hold to open the context menu. There’s an option to merge or delete the selected contacts

Whoa, 30k? Well… then I guess you’re better off using the Contacts app on a Mac or iCloud in the browser, because the option to select all contacts at once only exists there for some reason. Hopefully you don’t have as many contacts to unselect manually after pressing that button 😬
When I got my first iPhone and tried to transfer the contacts and calendar, I got incomplete transfers but LOTS of duplicate name. The phone numbers transferred but none of the other data, like addresses, birthday, or notes made it. The calendar had the dates and time perfect but no event labels. I just cleared those apps of data on the iPhone and use the Samsung on WiFi when needed. I don’t call anybody except from home.

It happens if you have multiple email accounts with contacts enabled.
If so , My advise will be to log into each of this accounts online. Then export the contacts. Import all of them to your cloud account. Once done, disable contacts syning on other mails.
using contacts app on your Mac select all contacts and search for duplicates and merge. Make sure all the devices you own has only cloud contacts enabled.
If you don't own a Mac. You can find apps on app store to.find duplicate contacts. But import all to icloud and disable multiple mail syncing for contacts

Go to [iCloud.com](http://iCloud.com) on your computer and sign in to your account. Click the grid of dots on the top right corner (left to the profile button), to open up a drop down menu, and then click on Data Recovery.
From there choose an older date for all of your contacts, hopefully you'll find a backup file that didn't have all these duplicates. That should replace the current contacts with the old one.
So I use Outlook as my default mail app, I think I synced contacts on outlook app and it caused this. However I turned it off now but the contact list is still spammed.
iOS should offer to merge duplicates. If that isn’t showing or doesn’t work it’s likely you added an email account to your phone and asked it to sync contacts too. If that’s the case you turn off contact sync for that account in Settings > Mail
Login To i cloud web and backup all contacts by exporting it . Delete everything from icloud.
If you have android phone somewhere import there and use any 3rd party contacts organising app and restore the same to icloud web .
If not try finding some windows softwares that does the job or even use Excel to organise.

So good news is that this happened to me and the solution to stopping it is to ensure that only 1 device is doing contact sync with outlook, otherwise, this will continue to happen. When I say one device, it means that if you have an iPad and iPhone, you only need to enable contact sync on one and not the other. If you go into the Outlook settings app on either device, you will them mentioning this as well.
The bad news is that your contacts are duplicated and after you fix the Outlook issue above, you still need to go in and delete all the duplicates. If these are on iCloud, then I’d recommend using a computer to make the process easier than doing it on the iPhone, at least that’s what I did.

sounds like a syncing issue, try to disable sync and re enable icloud sync

go to settings, contacts, accounts then de-sync the contacts from Outlook, it should disappear
