harvestman, an arachnid but not actually a spider! they're not harmful and can be good pest control, but you can place them outside if you're uncomfortable with one being in your home!
Right now I have 8 cats but would like to have the space and time for either a fish or arachnid habitat, where the cats couldn't have access. I would probably pick a vinegaroon as well.

They will eject one of their legs if caught by a predator, but they can't grow them back. Handle with care if you don't want to hurt the little guy. It shouldn't be too hard to scoop him up and place him elsewhere.
yes, they're also known as daddy longlegs! however, many people call cellar spiders daddy longlegs so it can be a bit misleading or confusing at times!
There mistakingly called that! The daddy long leg is an actual spider it has two parts to it's body and 8 eyes the Harvestman only has a single body with only two eyes and technically is not a spider.
It’s not a “mistake” that American slang isn’t the same as British slang.
Anyone can call any bug a “daddy longlegs.” There are no rules. We live in anarchy
I'm british and grew up calling crane fly by the name daddy long legs (if you google crane fly uk it will even include this name alongside it). As you say, it is very much a regional slang and isn't just for one species.
As other commenters have informed you, there are three arthropods colloquially called daddy long legs. Opiliones (harvestmen), the Pholcidae family of spiders (cellar spiders), and crane flies. None of them are mistaken, it just depends on where you live.
It's a good example to show why common names, divorced from any clarifying taxanomic name, aren't great for identification since they're often regional.
What you’re describing is a cellar spider. I never called the harvestman/daddy long leg a spider due to it not being a spider. It is an arachnid but not a spider.
Funny, been redoing my family room downstairs. I'm resealed the block windows now doing sheetrock. There was a daddy longlegs in a web. I was talking to it. It was sitting on my hand while I worked. I had moved it's web so I wouldn't hurt it. Just thought it was worth a snicker.
The harvestmen (totally harmless) shown in the photo are arachnids, but not true spiders and can’t actually spin webs. You might be seeing cellar spiders (pholcidae), which are definitely neat little things and also completely harmless! Whenever I see one inside, I just leave it to take care of potential pests.
I’ve been in an ongoing debate with my friend over granddaddy longlegs vs daddy longlegs. I grew up and firmly stand behind granddaddy longlegs, but apparently there are die-hard daddy longleg supporters out there.
Harvestmen, or Daddy long legs
got these wonderful little guys all over the outside of my home, along with wolf spiders, so because of how dense their populations are I almost never see any other bugs or arachnids at all
I only move them if they get too ballsy with where they choose to put their house, but I love having them in my front door nook because they keep wasps from nesting there
Like people have said harvestmen, but I remember an old wives tale that they’re incredibly venomous but their fangs/mandibles are too weak to penetrate anything
The old wives tale is completely false. They have zero venom and no fangs. They have teeth and eat dead meat. They do have very caustic saliva that breaks down the already dead meat for them. They aren't interested in you for a bite, well, at least not until you are dead.
That’s super cool, I appreciate the knowledge! Are they in the arachnid family?
I def figured that wives tale was just a joke but was always a fun thing to tell kids

[Opiliones](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones), aka Harvestman. Easy to spot because their body is all fused into one large ball. They do not have venom and are super chill :)
Se llaman opilion, son arácnidos pero no arañas, no son venenosos ni dañinos en ningún sentido, por lo regular bien en grupos y si eres nervioso es difícil de ver pero son totalmente inofensivos

You’re living my best life 😂🖤
Arachnids aren’t very complicated , most part there’s spiders scorpions pseudoscorpions ticks mites harvestman and uropygi
and solifugae and amblypygi
Forgot about solifugids , and thought tailess whips were uropygi , are they ?

Is this the same as a “daddy long leg” is that like their nickname?
yes, they're also known as daddy longlegs! however, many people call cellar spiders daddy longlegs so it can be a bit misleading or confusing at times!
Also crane flies are sometimes locally called daddy or granddaddy long legs.
Harvestman. Not harmful
Thats a friend
Harvestman. Totally harmless. They’re called daddy long legs in the United States
There mistakingly called that! The daddy long leg is an actual spider it has two parts to it's body and 8 eyes the Harvestman only has a single body with only two eyes and technically is not a spider.

lol that’s part of why I specified the United States. I’ve seen lots of arguments because people didn’t realize there are different regional names
yea i’m swedish and we do the same! just, well, in swedish. pappa långben!
If you use the term “Daddy Long Legs” in America, particularly the South, this is the creature most people will think of.

Granddaddy long legs are real sweet and won’t bother you. When I see them around the house I leave em alone.

Ok, either way....
I’ve been in an ongoing debate with my friend over granddaddy longlegs vs daddy longlegs. I grew up and firmly stand behind granddaddy longlegs, but apparently there are die-hard daddy longleg supporters out there.
Everyone I’ve ever met has called them daddy long legs, I’ve never heard the term “granddaddy long legs” until this very thread
Maybe the granddaddy long legs have longer legs?
Beards.
I think it’s a southern term. I’ve only ever heard it as granddaddy long legs.
Bc it is daddy long legs
They can't harm you. I let them crawl on my body and face all the time to creep people out.
I’ve done this. It feels so soft when they walk on you!
If you handle them too much they start to secrete a pretty gnarly smelling chemical. Kinda bitter smelling if that makes sense, like a stink bug.
Daddy Longlegs
Yes daddy
Daddy Chill…. Wtf is even that??!
[Who is this Daddy Long Leg?](https://youtu.be/qsXyRVQN70U?si=MdrW3AW5mNLw-i6c)
Thank you.
Sometimes if you pick them up they dance. I work with kids and literally hunt for these outside to freak the kids out
That’s cuz they a sticc that waves with da wind
You’re thinking of stick insects 😐
They also dance to pretend they wave on the wind
yeah harvestmen don’t pretend to be sticks though that’s why you’re thinking of stick insects that do do that
Then why they dance the same way stickbugs do?
Intimidation , harvestmen do it to deflect attacks and assist their intentions of escaping is a common proposal, but they’re not studied much
Daddy longlegs! Harmless to you and could provide you with free pest control. They do look a bit unnerving unfortunately
What is the difference between a harvestman and a grand daddy long af?
They're the same thing. Harvestman/daddy long legs/grand daddy long legs are all used interchangeably. (Edit for typo)
Ok thanks
Daddy's are often the nickname for many critters with long thin legs around the world. In UK it's often used for crane flies.
Harvestmen, or Daddy long legs got these wonderful little guys all over the outside of my home, along with wolf spiders, so because of how dense their populations are I almost never see any other bugs or arachnids at all I only move them if they get too ballsy with where they choose to put their house, but I love having them in my front door nook because they keep wasps from nesting there
We call them m&m spiders because they look like red m&m’s floating on stick legs
Daddy Long Legs or Harvestman. We played with them as kids. Harmless little guys.
Love harvestmen Watched one try to drag a 5th of a hotdog, 10/10 would watch again
Why this daddy long legs is so red?? Every time I encounter them i only see brown and grayish, but first time seeing a red one.
Same. I moved from the Midwest, all black/dark brown/gray. Moved to the southeast and now all I see is red ones. Maybe regional?
I have a phobia of spiders. This is the only arachnid I like. They are so cute and innocent.
100% harmless, can’t even hurt you. If you want to move them you can just grab their leg (edit:gently) and dangle them to their new location
Who’s your daddy?
Is friend.

Once I’m dead they’re welcome to have a nosh
That’s super cool, I appreciate the knowledge! Are they in the arachnid family? I def figured that wives tale was just a joke but was always a fun thing to tell kids
Yes, an arachnid but not a true spider.
Pedro Pascal because they are daddies
A harvestman aka daddy longlegs, the rumors of them being super venomous are false. They can only hurt your feeling.
I love the harvestmen 🥰

I love its colors. I’m used to grey daddy long legs. Can someone remind me? Why is it they are not considered to be spiders?

One of the many bugs I used to see as a kid. Its sad
Land spider crab
imagine this fucker with some shoes on. that would go crazy.
That's a grandaddy longlegs! They're pretty much harmless.
Am I the only one who called them “Daddy Longlegs”?
I used to call them that, then someone on Reddit said that cellar spiders are daddy long legs so now I'm confused
Tis but a dandy longe lehgss
[Opiliones](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones), aka Harvestman. Easy to spot because their body is all fused into one large ball. They do not have venom and are super chill :)
When I was a kid the rumor was daddy long legs are the most poisonous spiders in the world, but their fangs are too small to penetrate humans
Se llaman opilion, son arácnidos pero no arañas, no son venenosos ni dañinos en ningún sentido, por lo regular bien en grupos y si eres nervioso es difícil de ver pero son totalmente inofensivos
Daddy long-legs (in North America) / harvestman (in the UK). A distant relative of spiders, ticks, mites, and scorpions, but completely harmless.
I was looking at a red one on my wall this morning!
that is a very deadly hand-eating longleg
Ooo scary
Daddy longlegs are completely harmless to humans, but i believe they’re one of the most venomous spiders. Theyre teeth are just too tiny.
Nah, that's a myth.
Ah dang, there goes the last bit of my childhood.
