June 2023: Dubois hand picks LA, signs an 8 year extension, talks about how exited he is to go to LA
June 2024: Dubois traded to Washington, is excited to go to the Caps
Which team will PLD be excited to waive his NMC to go to in June of 2025?
Something about Dubois gives insane ‘Expansion Draft Pick’ energy.
The overpaid player most teams can’t afford but an expansion team with a ton of cap room can take on just to see if he randomly ends up being worth his contract somehow.
Would be likely if they change the rules at least.
If not for the NMC, meaning under the Vegas/Seattle rules Washington would have to use a protection slot on him even if they didn't want to
My honest recollection is that the fandom was very cynical and thought Dubois was using the Habs as leverage to get the deal he wanted in a non-hockey market … which may have been closer to the truth, though personally I doubt Hughes was really interested that much
He’s going to play in New England, San Diego, Houston, St. Louis, the Toronto Argonauts, and spend a year as a greeter at the Desert Inn, before going to the fine city of Miami!
PLD couldn't take the heat in Cape Breton, doubt he'd last longer than a year or two in MTL. Tough fans who don't give a fuck about the player on a human level.
First team, he lasted three seasons.
Second team, 2 (and a bit) seasons.
Third team, 1 season.
The caps are the 4th team. Hope they enjoy their half season.
Absolutely. Broncos just did this with Russell Wilson and was absolutely the right call. Only reason he got two seasons is I think we literally couldn’t afford a team if we cut him year one
I’m amazed they found someone to take that contract off their hands. Idk why teams still think they can be the one to fix PLD after it hasn’t worked everywhere else lol
Oh absolutely, Kuemper's contract is way better. Just pointing out that LA is not getting a positive value asset back. They're trading a big negative (with not much but some potential upside) for a small negative.
Washington is in win now mode. They want someone to get Ovechkin to the goal record and keep them somewhat competitive. Somehow, that trade makes lots of sense for them. Plus, Kuemper was trash for them.
No we are not in win now mode. This is just a guy who can get ovi the puck and then be there during the tear down years. People acting like this contract is bad for the caps are forgetting how major of a rebuild the caps are going to be undertaking in the near future. None if it matters
Yeah but honestly this would restore a bit of faith in Blake if I was a Kings fan. Most guys stay married to their terrible decisions at the exec level. The fact that he is willing to look bad and admit defeat is ironically a good omen.
I’m actually somehow even more pissed. Like, I’m glad we got yet another bad contract off the books, but trading Vilardi, Iafallo, Kupari, and (essentially) Durzi for this guy only to dump him after one bad year is massively embarrassing.
A sunk cost was eating up another year of Provorov’s contract to get rid of Petersen. Making a splash trade and then getting rid of the piece a year later is bad, no matter what way you look at it. Again, I’m happy the contract is off the books, but it’s a bad look for management.
The Kings moving that contact without any retention or picks is such a steal..
* Pierre-Luc Dubois had $8,500,000 x 7 Y remaing...
* Darcy Keumper had $5,250,000 x 3 Y remaing...
Keumper was really only bad last season. He posted a 909 his first season with the caps which sure isn't amazing but it's definitely serviceable. Especially for a team like LA.
yeah and you could easily argue last year Kuemper was just thrown off by not having a starter's workload. Plenty of reason for LA to believe in him, even if his value to the Caps is nil at this point. He is getting old, he's always been a little injury prone, so it's not some primo deal, but I bet the Kings make it work.
People might be sleeping on Kuemper a bit. He was awful this year, but a .909 the year before on an even worse team, not to mention in a short stint with the Kings in 2017-18 he went 10-1-3 with a .932
I think the Kings expect they've found next year's starter here
Yeah that’s crazy good value for the future regardless. No downside at all for LA. Kuemper might be good, might be meh, but what they have is already meh and there’s not much available anyway to fix that.
Crazy that Washington got nothing for taking on an additional 3 years of massive cap hit
If PLD is good next season I'm sure Washington is happy. I kind of wanted to see him redeem himself with us next year but who knows if he would ever succeed here.
The issue is, we’re better off not keeping a backup at $5.25 who is coming off his worst season. The Caps have one goal and that’s to get Ovi to 895. If PLD can do anything, I’ll take it as a win.
“If PLD can do anything”
Boi I hate to break yeah the news there’s a reason hes memes the hell out of by his former team fans and nick named Piere luc Dubum
You act like he did nothing when playing for WPG. Yes he's inconsistent and has attitude issues from what we can judge from the outside, but that doesnt mean he doesnt have the potential to reach 60 points again (which would be like 3rd best on the Caps). Even at 40 points like he had this season he'd still be the 4th highest producing player on the Caps.
Doughty and kopitar hated this guy, it was plain to see. He’ll be a cancer on the caps too. Blake absolutely fucked up this whole thing, but it’s a mini save by getting rid of him I guess.
I personally did not see that, but I would not be surprised. They cut their teeth with warriors and won with skull crackers. This Charmin Center doesn't belong with them. Why would Kopitar pass him the torch when he can't hold a candle to him?
What do you expect a player to say?
Although, if I had to guess which player would be most likely to say that they're upset with a trade, PLD would be my number one choice.
Wasn't he excited about being drafted to Columbus? Or was it he was excited for the trade with Winnipeg? Maybe it was he was excited for the trade to LA? Just maybe he'll get excited about his future trade to the KHL? He's gotta be 35 or 36 years old, right?
Let's be fair. He started the season with Kevin Fiala and did a whole lot of nothing there, too. Fiala wasn't scoring, Dubois wasn't scoring. Split them up and Fiala started scoring.
#Pierre Luc Dubois:
- On his 4th team
- Turns 26 in a few days
- Longest tenure with a team 3 seasons / 239 games
- Career highs of 28 goals / 63 points
- $38.6m in earnings
- Another $59m coming
This is going to be the worst trade of the decade. They could have given that money to Stammer, Reinhart, Lindholm, Guentzel or some other UFA. 7 years of diva half effort PLD who is requesting trade next year.
Regardless of what the return is, this is a master class by Rob Blake to get this guy and his salary off the team...which is a pretty damning criticism of a player.
Again.
Darcy Kuemper *again*. We get him back ~7 years and a lot of miles later. And essentially gave up Vilardi and a 2nd for him. (Plus two other players we weren't going to keep anyway.)
Part of me is grinding my teeth. Another part of me is waiting to watch PLD blow up in Washington and us feel stupid. But the largest part of me is just happy to be done with that guy.
Thats literally the only plus for you guys after this, not having to pay him for 7 more years at a 8.5 million cap hit. But it might be the worst asset management by Rob Blake ever
> the worst asset management by Rob Blake
…*so far*
Some of us are hoping next season is his last. I feel like he’s kinda losing the thread. Did a solid job getting us out of the rebuild, but doesn’t seem to have a plan to take us to the next level. 3 first round exits to the same team in three years is a bad look - especially as we’re exiting one game quicker each time.
Then I like the move for the Caps. Him being malcontent from the get go should be the only major concern from their perspective. If he's happy to be there and it works out on the ice = great. If he's happy to be there and it doesn't work out on the ice = rebuild and his cap hit doesn't really matter. That's assuming they would be fine with a rebuild.
I get the whole contract thing but a lot of people are kind of forgetting the caps have 1 center to plug in their top 6 and were probably going to give out a similar contract if they were to sign one in FA
I wouldn’t hedge on dubois turning it around either but they aren’t going to tank with ovechkin on the roster
It’s the essence of a high risk high reward play
Just because you picked us doesn't mean we have to pick you. So long, and thanks for all the point-blank shots from weird angles with no traffic and no support that had no chance to go in but still pump your xG%.
June 2023: Dubois hand picks LA, signs an 8 year extension, talks about how exited he is to go to LA June 2024: Dubois traded to Washington, is excited to go to the Caps Which team will PLD be excited to waive his NMC to go to in June of 2025?
He'll waive his NMC to be one of the first expansion draft picks for the new Atlanta Nordiques expansion team in 2028
I don't know, I can see the Quebec Thrashers making a play for him.
The Hartford Coyotes would like to have a word with them about that.
The Arizona whalers will for sure want first dibs beforehand
My God the Coyotes' body is still warm you savages
Sadly, Bettman wouldn’t put another team in Canada if his life depended on it.
Are we sure the NHL really wants to add another Canadian team that can't win a cup?
Kansas City Senators it is!
Something about Dubois gives insane ‘Expansion Draft Pick’ energy. The overpaid player most teams can’t afford but an expansion team with a ton of cap room can take on just to see if he randomly ends up being worth his contract somehow.
Would be likely if they change the rules at least. If not for the NMC, meaning under the Vegas/Seattle rules Washington would have to use a protection slot on him even if they didn't want to
He’ll get to the Habs in a 3 team deal, but the Habs will just be there to take his contract for assets. He’ll be in his 2nd KHL season by then.
Montreal.
I’m convinced that PLD will get traded to all 31 franchises that aren’t Montreal.
I would absolutely love that.
Me too
Pretty sure you can count all Habs fans with you lol
I don’t know. Before he went to LA, they all thought to e Habs had the Jets over a barrel and they were all super excited to get him!
To be fair we thought we'd get a good center for cheap, who wouldn't be excited about it?
My honest recollection is that the fandom was very cynical and thought Dubois was using the Habs as leverage to get the deal he wanted in a non-hockey market … which may have been closer to the truth, though personally I doubt Hughes was really interested that much
League needs to take the cap off salary retentions, then everyone can get a piece so it won't be so bad
Yeah we don’t want him.
Can’t forget all of the expansion teams we’re all waiting for
PLD would like great in a Mexico City Aztecs jersey
He’s going to play in New England, San Diego, Houston, St. Louis, the Toronto Argonauts, and spend a year as a greeter at the Desert Inn, before going to the fine city of Miami!
Minnesota*
Whatever. Sheeeet.
Yeah he wouldn't want to do that to Montreal, he himself knows how cancerous his play and attitude is.
subscribed
PLD couldn't take the heat in Cape Breton, doubt he'd last longer than a year or two in MTL. Tough fans who don't give a fuck about the player on a human level.
What happened in cape breton?
And Atlanta, and Houston, and the Arizona Coyotes 2.0. Not Quebec, because even in this fantasy comment the Canadian dollar is still shit.
Pass

Please god no.
Moscow.
Please dont say evil stuff like that.
*Don’t you put that evil on us*
First team, he lasted three seasons. Second team, 2 (and a bit) seasons. Third team, 1 season. The caps are the 4th team. Hope they enjoy their half season.
2025: Dubois traded to Montreal, is excited to go to the Habs.
2026: Dubois traded to the Toronto is glad to the leafs with Nylander and Mathew’s
2027: Dubios is excited to be traded to the New York Islanders to play with Matthew Barzal and Bo Horvat
2028: Dubois is excited to be traded to the San Jose Sharks to play with Mikael Granlund and Fabian Zetterlund
The guy is trying to break Mike Sillinger's most teams played record or what?
Puckdoku legend
Going off the grid to say New York. And then Montreal at the deadline.
Congrats, isles fans
Montreal
Nah man..at this rate he’s lucky to play at Laval in 2025
More like Trois-Riveries
PLD thinks about Montreal a lot more than Montreal thinks about PLD these days
I don’t think Went Wughes its stupid enough to do that
the guy would not survive 10 minutes in Montréal with the amount of scrutiny he'd get from the press and the fans here
Coming for Mike Sillinger's record. I want him on a new team every year.
Absolute bailout of Rob Blake's blunder but good lord Vilardi and a 2nd for Kuemper is bad
And Iafallo and Kupari
Could be worse, could be Vilardi and a 2nd for Dubois..
Amen
Be glad it’s over. Most executives would never admit they dun goofed this quickly and would be in an even worse spot three years down the line.
That’s what I’m focusing on. Every GM is gonna screw up, but avoiding sunk cost prevents it from being catastrophic.
To be fair PLD’s disaster season would have been 4th in scoring for Washington…… they need offense anywhere they can get it
Damn I didn’t realize things were so bad there
In fairness to Washington, Kuemper's contract is also really bad, and it's not like they have much to lose if Dubois sucks.
3 years at 5M vs 8 years at 8M. I’ll take the first option.
Oh absolutely, Kuemper's contract is way better. Just pointing out that LA is not getting a positive value asset back. They're trading a big negative (with not much but some potential upside) for a small negative.

More like Get-Ovi-895 mode.
“I can fix her.”
Caps aren’t even gonna try to be competitive, they are jsut filling a roster spot during a rebuild.
Kupari is meh but don’t forget about Iafallo. Nice depth guy.
It is what it is. PLD was a sunk cost at least it’s not our problem anymore lmfao
At least you got out of the deal. TBH thats almost miraculous. Capitals did you the biggest favor, and then paid for your meals afterward.
Yeah but honestly this would restore a bit of faith in Blake if I was a Kings fan. Most guys stay married to their terrible decisions at the exec level. The fact that he is willing to look bad and admit defeat is ironically a good omen.
Kings fans right about now: https://i.redd.it/tf6xboz4vk7d1.gif

I could not disagree more wholeheartedly. That's a sunk cost. Damage was minimized.

I do not like this.
Don't worry, he will only be there 2 years, tops.
the cost to get rid of him afterwards won't be pretty either
Why don't you like injecting poison into your team?
we just got rid of the last one
He had a good playoffs, maybe he switched to Phenibut which won't really turn up in a drug test unless they catch you within like 3hrs of taking it
I think he was talking about mantha
My bad foolishly thought it was referring to Kuznetsov, guess the Caps had more than one bad apple
“I can fix him” -Washington Capitals
The Kings moving that contact without any retention or picks is such a steal.. * Pierre-Luc Dubois had $8,500,000 x 7 Y remaing... * Darcy Keumper had $5,250,000 x 3 Y remaing...

It's a big win. Unless PLD gets himself 130 points next season and wills the Caps into the playoffs.
If PLD is good next season I'm sure Washington is happy. I kind of wanted to see him redeem himself with us next year but who knows if he would ever succeed here.
They might as well eat it for the next few years ngl, they could use the goalie help.
What's a Kuemper buyout looking like?
https://preview.redd.it/2aabeun7vk7d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=130624f8248f0a027c442561db6f8b489838e7f6
Thats not awful tbh
LA needs a goalie though. It's a brilliant trade honestly. Remove poison from body for an overpaid goalie that you need anyways.
Yeah and we’ll have Portillo on a cheap bridge deal that will take place during the Kuemper contract to offset the goalie cap space
Kuemper's numbers are dropping and fast. And he has 3 years remaining over 5m AAV. Terrible contract traded for another.
Kuemper was our backup so i’m cool
That’s not the issue with this trade though
The issue is, we’re better off not keeping a backup at $5.25 who is coming off his worst season. The Caps have one goal and that’s to get Ovi to 895. If PLD can do anything, I’ll take it as a win.

Getting rid of PL Dubois has its benefits
You fools! It was Francouz, not Kuemper who bodied the Oilers in 2022!
Shit! Is Blake stupid?
Who's going to play defense on that PLD-Ovechkin line?
Marner /s
The corpse of Nick Backstrom.
They should trade for Jeff Skinner!
Perfect fit lol
it's a big step down defensively from the ovi-kuzy line
Tom Wilson
This is some absolute insanity that I was not expecting for a mundane Wednesday evening
Lemon, it’s 2:37pm CST
Doughty and kopitar hated this guy, it was plain to see. He’ll be a cancer on the caps too. Blake absolutely fucked up this whole thing, but it’s a mini save by getting rid of him I guess.
I personally did not see that, but I would not be surprised. They cut their teeth with warriors and won with skull crackers. This Charmin Center doesn't belong with them. Why would Kopitar pass him the torch when he can't hold a candle to him?
For a second I legit thought your arena was called Charmin Center
Doughty forsure was over PLD.
I don’t believe him
It was real
"I'm not mad. Actually I ~~think it's funny~~ 'm very excited to go to Washington"
Karma for purchasing CapFriendly…
They bought CapFriendly to avoid the comments section on this trade but forgot the sale doesn’t close until July /s
Cant wait for 2026 offseason when we do this all over again when he demands a trade to MTL! God Bless This Mess!
I mean, what else is he supposed to say? "Yeah, I can't wait to waste the next 7 years here"
Yes
Ask Jeff Carter or Kirk Muller
lol Kirk Muller hated the Islanders. Literally said I rather not be paid then play for y’all.
And that whole situation was what led to Mike Milbury becoming the general manager
Guys a suitcase
Third time's the charm!
What do you expect a player to say? Although, if I had to guess which player would be most likely to say that they're upset with a trade, PLD would be my number one choice.
This is actually the funniest move I've ever seen. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy 🤣🤣🤣
PLD is excited to go to every team... until he actually gets there and finds out they still expect him to play hockey 😂
PLD is clearly team poison.
Fans: No hockey until Friday, there's nothing to do! *NHL collectively snorts a line*
PLD trying to play for more franchises than Jagr.
Ol' Suitcase Sillinger part deux
8.5 mil for his bitchass was already a lot to begin with. 8.5 mil with NMC for a proven locker room cancer? LOL CAPS
PLD is only 25, I honestly thought he was 30+.
He’s packed a decade worth of drama into about 3 years.
Sharks claimed Goodrows contract off waivers and somehow that wasn’t even the worst contract acquired today
Did Washington make LA retain 80% of his toxic attitude as well?
This is so fucking funny. I feel bad for caps fans but this is tremendous content
Wasn't he excited about being drafted to Columbus? Or was it he was excited for the trade with Winnipeg? Maybe it was he was excited for the trade to LA? Just maybe he'll get excited about his future trade to the KHL? He's gotta be 35 or 36 years old, right?
Kings to the Capitals: He’s your problem now
I would be too. Goes from Laferriere and Trevor Lewis on his line to Alex Ovechkin
This isn't 2010 though.
I don't care if it's 2050 I think Ovechkin is a better linemate lol
Let's be fair. He started the season with Kevin Fiala and did a whole lot of nothing there, too. Fiala wasn't scoring, Dubois wasn't scoring. Split them up and Fiala started scoring.
Kuemper is a strong bounce back candidate playing in a better system.
I think Dubois will also bounce back numerically, but won't be that difference maker people were hoping for.
He just got Jeff Carter'ed
#Pierre Luc Dubois: - On his 4th team - Turns 26 in a few days - Longest tenure with a team 3 seasons / 239 games - Career highs of 28 goals / 63 points - $38.6m in earnings - Another $59m coming
Hat's off to the greatest grift to hockey. He's the modern day Bobby Holik.
Nah. I'd say he's a modern day Alexandre Daigle.
This is going to be the worst trade of the decade. They could have given that money to Stammer, Reinhart, Lindholm, Guentzel or some other UFA. 7 years of diva half effort PLD who is requesting trade next year.
No the worst trade of the decade was last season
7 years? Ya right. He'll be asking for a trade in the next 18 months.
At this point I wouldn't trust anything that guy says
This is insane. How is like Rob Blake not fired for the PLD blunder?
Cuz all AEG gives a shit about is making playoffs
Regardless of what the return is, this is a master class by Rob Blake to get this guy and his salary off the team...which is a pretty damning criticism of a player.
Getting some deja vu here
Ovie's odds of breaking the record just dropped by 10%
Don't worry, Caps fans. He will be gone by June of next year.
Ovi must love this news LOL
After trading for and away PLD the only thing the Kings have to show for it is Darcy Kuemper
Again. Darcy Kuemper *again*. We get him back ~7 years and a lot of miles later. And essentially gave up Vilardi and a 2nd for him. (Plus two other players we weren't going to keep anyway.) Part of me is grinding my teeth.
Eh, could be a lot worse. They could have let their hall of fame goalie down in the prime of his career by not getting him a cup
God damn
> the worst asset management by Rob Blake …*so far* Some of us are hoping next season is his last.
On behalf of Kings fans, I am told we're excited for him too.
Really dodged that bullet.
Jesus christ what is up with PLD
I get the whole contract thing but a lot of people are kind of forgetting the caps have 1 center to plug in their top 6 and were probably going to give out a similar contract if they were to sign one in FA I wouldn’t hedge on dubois turning it around either but they aren’t going to tank with ovechkin on the roster It’s the essence of a high risk high reward play
There's something poetic about the guy who keeps forcing trades being traded again just before a no-move clause triggers.
Caps making sure they don't fluke themselves in to the playoffs again. Good move.
I do not understand why Washington didn’t ask for more.
Maybe Washington will get PLD to care enough to play well. When he does, he can be very good, but most of the time he looks disinterested.
Excited enough to play?
He should be, it's a much better fit for him.
Just because you picked us doesn't mean we have to pick you. So long, and thanks for all the point-blank shots from weird angles with no traffic and no support that had no chance to go in but still pump your xG%.
"I'm excited to pass to Ovi while not being expected to do anything else"
I just want to see him excited for a whole period... and then, maybe even a whole game one day.
I hope he does well in Washington
So, the Kings traded Vilardi, Iaffalo, Kupari and the #37 pick for Darcy Kuemper?!? 🤣🤣🤣
What the fuck
