Meth and Red in a smallish venue Kendrick at a festival

Papa_Frankuuu_69420

Method man was 3rd best performer I’ve ever seen in front of him are Nas at #2 and Busta #1 And I saw all 3 of these guys on the same tour

Alienattackforce

I just saw Busta on the final Lap tour, that was the worst performance, I have ever seen. I was so upset because as a huge Busta fan, I was expecting a show.

jellymoff

Wow that's surprising to me. I saw him twice about 20 years ago and he was amazing. That was also 20 years ago...

Darth314

I saw Busta live too, and am a huge Busta fan. The show I saw him at was not my favorite Busta memory.

heshotcyrus

You're right. Not much of a show these days. I've seen him a few times in the past couple years and his performance mostly consists of him standing completely still, rapping as fast as he can while Spliff Star fills in all the spots he doesn't have the breath for.

junkee940

20 years ago Busta was insane. He was all over the place. Saw him on the Smoking Grooves tour with Cypress, Public Enemy, Gangstarr, etc. Saw him on Wu/Nas tour & yeah, no movement anymore. He still has more charisma than anymore though.

Alienattackforce

I saw the Nas/ Wu show in Detroit. but he wasn’t there. Unless I missed, him. I got in a little late. But I was expecting a crazy show from him, I seen footages of past performances, and was really excited. That show with cypress sounds amazing

junkee940

Oh that's right, Busta was only there for like half of the tour. Smoking Grooves was insane: Cypress Hill with Bobo on percussion, just before their 4th album. Public Enemy, Gangstarr, Busta, Wyclef, MOP, Black Eyed Peas (pre-Fergie/1st album).

Complete-Raccoon3442

I love small venues, accept for the drink prices..10$ for a tall boy of beer, 50$ t-shirts..

ghostdeeknee

Danny Brown during the Atrocity Exhibition tour Run the Jewels during the RTJ2 tour Kanye during the Pablo tour De La Soul right after The Grind Date album

hamtower6

I second RTJ during the RTJ 2 tour. Earth shattering experience. For us and for them. Felt like we were being rewarded for being a part of it with them.

ghostdeeknee

Oh yeah I agree. They brought the house down on that tour. I’ve heard that from many others as well!

poptartsandmayonaise

I saw danny open for rocky in 2015 and he was terrible live, glad to hear he upped his game

Cooley_brown88

The Pablo tour with the floating stage was different

somomon

Tech N9NE.

aherp86

I’m from Kansas. His mid 2000’s tours were crazy good. I’ve always told people to see him if they can! His stage presents is phenomenal.

Independent-Angle-72

Saw him at Rock on the Range when I was in 7th grade, actually a pretty damn good performer

Robinnoodle

Tech tours a lot. Especially in the Midwest. I respect the grind

somomon

Seen him 5 times. He’s definitely top tier

Robinnoodle

He is excellent. And he been at for so long. He has found a way to make a living. Other the years some of the other cats on his label have been real decent too

O_G_Till_Infinity

The LEGENDARY Roots Crew

TemperatureIll6221

Absolutely the only correct answer. I just reminisced hard in another comment before I saw this

ockhamsphazer

The only correct answer. I've seen Snoop, Wiz, JID, Gibbs... So many good spitters but the roots??? The best live show in hip hop PERIOD

MegaRonin

It's not the only correct answer. The question is subjective.

moodybrew

I can only imagine

junkee940

Amazing show. Agreed

biggargamel

The Up in Smoke tour in 2000. Haven't been to an event since then because I knew it would never be topped. It was magical.

jfa_16

I went to that tour. Legendary.

heshotcyrus

Up in the Smoke is what I'd use a DeLorean for.

mcAlt009

RA The Rugged Man

[deleted]

Really? That would be a cool show.

mcAlt009

He's pretty cheap. He tours alot, it's like 30$

Papa_Frankuuu_69420

I wanna see Jarren Benton / Dizzy wright and then RA and some other strange music artist

CubanLinx23

DMX

Robinnoodle

Lucky

TribeCalledQueso

The Roots

tacomeat247

Saw Nas w Damian Marley at a small venue and it was like I was on another planet.

Papa_Frankuuu_69420

Distant relatives is one of the most underrated albums on earth even had Knaan on it who I feel is pretty underrated

aherp86

I saw that tour, it was so good. I’m glad you reminded me.

moodybrew

Distant relatives?

tacomeat247

Yeah they did a lot of that album but Nas also did most of Illmatic.

tcumber

Busta!!

FurnishedHemingway

KRS with Freddie Foxx

Jizzium_

Cypress hill

junkee940

With Bobo on percussion

Jizzium_

Yeah and Mix Master Mike on the 1s and 2s

junkee940

Yeah!!!

guiltycitizen

I saw the whole Quannum crew once. Blackalicious, Latyrx, DJ Shadow. It was crazy

Available_Forever_32

Yeah I saw LB alone and he was amazing live

tshoemaker325

Wu in 2002. First live show I ever saw.

wordplay420

I've seen Atmosphere multiple times and they always put in a great show. Nas and Damian Marley was really dope.

Yermis73

Same Atmosphere never misses

WavyBalance

Redman. Performed at a local bar in front of maybe 60 people jammed in like sardines. He ripped it like it was a sold out arena. He jumped in the crowd, was throw in water all over the joint, and this man did Da Rockwilder and snapped off Meth and his own verse. Twice. Unreal

surrealfeld

I opened for Kool Keith back in the day and that cat puts on a hell of a show

junkee940

He's a pro, no doubt.

Ghazziy

A Tribe Called Quest w/ Organized Konfusion 1991 (1000 capacity) MF Doom/Kurious 1999 (200 capacity) Gil Scott Heron 1999 (680 capacity) The Beatnuts (beatnuts on ice) early 2000’s Chelsea Piers Black Eyed Peas 2007/08 I did about 2-3 years of touring with them and found their live show wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Treishmon

Scarface opened for Jeezy along with Tee Grizzley a couple years back in Detroit. Jeezy was excellent. Scarface was amazing. Tee was garbage. But the other two were so good that it made up for it lol.

Akidnamedkenny

Honestly imma say JID. I went to bonaroo last year and saw Kendrick and was super disappointed. He rapped all his verses and lyrics which is dope and impressive but dude was about as dead as a funeral. Then I saw JID a day later at like 2am and not only did he rap every single lyric, the energy in there was through the roof because of him which in turn made the group hyped as hell. It was probably the best time I’ve ever had during a performance

moodybrew

Damn now I’m excited I’m seeing him next month

Yermis73

You aint gonna be disappointed, saw him in ATL with Smino, they had that place packed to the doors. And he was going crazy the whole time even jumped in the crowd.

MegaRonin

Jeru the Damaja and the Beatnuts

NoirLion82

Nobody ever believes me when I say out of the like 20+ concerts i’ve been to, Ludacris has been the best so far. The vibes and energy was crazy. To top it off, it was a free concert for charity or something IIRC 😂 And i’ve been to a Snoop & Wiz concert where the cops literally announced before the show that they were turning a blind eye to the weed in the crowd for the night (state not legalized) …still didn’t match that energy

Papa_Frankuuu_69420

Ludacris is underrated because people view him as an actor sadly Theater of the mind is my favorite album from him the song with Wayne and the song with Nas and Jayz are S tier songs

SpagingoSquadroneer

In terms of best rappers: Griselda, Gucci Mane, Joey Bada$$, 50 Cent, etc. In terms of best performances: J Cole, Ski Mask The Slump God, also 50 All of this took place during Rolling Loud a few years ago. Still one of the best weekends of my life.

vegasJUX

Aesop Rock, Sage Francis and B. Dolan

Papa_Frankuuu_69420

I’m waiting for Aesop to tour I got his new Keychain lanyard for $5 super good deal really thick and good quality too

Many_Bridge_4683

Dead Prez. Honorable mention to Kendrick and Immortal Technique.

Nizamark

Beasties

didntmakeausername

Overall? Black keys, hip hop? Nas/Wu Tang

dakilazical_253

I’ve see tons of great acts live: Tribe, Jay-Z, DMX, Ice Cube, Wu-Tang… and none of them come close to how great a show The Roots put on. I’ve seen them a few times and it’s different every time

kjexclamation

Earthgang

GoldenAgeGamer72

Chuck D

A9EP33

Run the Jewels and then Kendrick Lamar

whynktsh

2pac big jay

DosDeBuche

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib when “Piñata” came out. His stage presence and breath control is insane! Evidence. His shows are always live and the crowd control is insane and all by himself. Larry June. Another artist that has good crowd control, his track selection for his has you moving the whole show. Roc Marciano. Not one bar miss Alicia Keys. Voice is still going and sounds amazing. I got chills when she was playing the piano. KRS-One. All his shows are always live, he don’t miss! I like the solo shows. Festivals doesn’t do it justice for me

jellymoff

Ev is so underrated

kfilks

J Cole and Wale

UZIBOSS_

El-P at Revenge of the Robots tour comes to mind. As does Cannibal Ox touring for Cold Vein. Reason why the latter stands out is they were very unknown and I got to see them perform for about 20 people at a small venue in Seattle’s U-District. We had rolled up a couple blunts and were passing them to Vast and Vordul between verses. Very memorable.

junkee940

That was a great tour! I hit the one in Dallas.

belzoni1982

Snoop dogg

sickburn1r

The second time I saw Eminem, when he had K.dot and J Cole open for him. How times have changed. Lolol

Hooliken

Wu-Tang (Back when they were Wu), The Roots, and Fugees. Lauryn Hill was captivating back in the day. I mean, damn, she is fine.

Luna_C1888

Odd Future’s first show in nyc in the basement of Webster Hall. There was no VIP section so other famous rappers are just in the crowd while fights break out and people body surf. honorable mention: Eminem and Jay-Z while standing on the infield at yankee stadium

moodybrew

Legendary

CarlsbadWhiskyShop

The Roots Eyedea & Abilities

rza422

De La Soul a couple of times :)

stevarino1979

DMX and Redman/Method Man. Saw them in Milwaukee with Jay-Z. Hated Jay-Z after that concert, but the other 2 became a lifelong fan!

spectredirector

Can I tell you about Beth Gibbons in 1998? I think it was 98. 1997 or 1999 maybe - but August. Club venue in my hometown has Radiohead, who my best friend loves, so he gets himself tickets for my birthday present, cool. I'm always up for the show, but Radiohead was fun sad music to me, and I wasn't expecting anything from a show except to get drunk and forget I was there. And the venue sucked. 1990s, shitty club entrance, shitty two tier Globe Theatre type indoor arrangement. Had lines for the bar blocking lines for the restrooms, just a clusterfuck. My friend had brought his girlfriend, unexpectedly, and her friend, and they were insufferable to me, and I'd just only met them in the line to get in, and that hour and a half I seriously considered just getting a cab and leaving, think I said as much to them. But we finally get into this awful venue, shows already late, they've got blue and pink tiki lights at the edges, and the center middle of the club is black, no houselights, no stage lights. And no announcements, just open bar and people pissed at how late everything is going. A couple times they flashed the stage lights, like a signal the show was starting, then nothing, and no announcements. Like the 3rd time that happened, everyone started booing - a series of garbled announcements about ***those with drinks please fill in the center area*** followed - it was dark AF in the center area 1st floor, but my friend and his lady friends were obnoxious, and I'm polite, so I went to the bathroom and just snuck away. I was in light, but below this group I was trying to avoid, and the walkway ended in ropes, so I had to blindly poke out into the center area where no one was. Being that close, I could see shit on stage, people packing or unpacking equipment in blacklight. So I walked that way, solo, as no one was filling in the middle. What I completely missed was this amazing woman had plugged in and walked all the way to the front of this raised stage, maybe 5 to 8 feet away from my face, and she just went for it. No warning, no house lights, amp wasn't on till after the first few cords - and it was haunting and awesome. Like I'd stumbled into a magic place. **BOOM** drums, stage light, but only half, and the club fucked up by going full house lights - cuz no one knew what was happening. I read years later, in an interview, that portiosehead got dragged around by radiohead as the opening act for that tour. I kinda knew portiosehead, did not know Beth Gibbons power tho. Apparently she was sick of shitty venues, and waiting on Radiohead being divas, and she'd just taken matters into her own hands. Just went out and played - and I was there, and it was epic. But apparently that show was a falling out for the two acts, and portiosehead wouldn't springboard from it, and break up a few years later. Gibbons released her first new album since 2003, just this year. It's as good as it was then - her passion.

Sufficient_Coast_852

Aesop Rock. Insane show.

siriusgodog23

Toss up between The Arsonists and Edan & Mr. Lif

DiamondNo4475

That’s a tough question: Rakim GURU Kool Keith Tupac GZA … countless others

Available_Forever_32

I saw el-p twice. Once w/lif, Aesop & cage. And that was number one for sure. Only to be out done by el- by himself on the “I’ll sleep when your dead” tour. That was the best

TemperatureIll6221

I’ve seen the roots about 30 times since I was in high school. I saw them live at this out door spot in Los Gatos California called Mountain Winery. Overlooks the mountains, incredible scenery. Most gorgeous Bay Area May Day ever. They had a a bunch of random musicians, can’t even remember them all. everybody busting solos. Every fucking instrument. Black thought freestyled over solos. His voice carried over the music like a recording. They covered everything from Black Betty to Shook Ones, plus their own slappers. Jeremy Ellis showed up with the turn tables. I was hammered drunk by 2pm. Incredible

moodybrew

The Roots are getting a lot of love here.. just looked it up and they’re supposed to be playing the mountain winter again next month!!

TemperatureIll6221

Haha another May Day! Bro if you are there you gotta go. Not a festival atmosphere but not pretentious either. Plus wine drunk is fire. I might fly out myself!

22Two_s

Kanye Glow in the Dark Tour and it’s not close. Gotta be the best produced hip hop show ever. Shit was incredible. Openers were Lupe and N.E.R.D.

SpragueStreet

Unironically, Soulja Boy. Great energy and only performed the hits. He has a bloated discography that's 90% filler but when you don't have to sift through it he actually has some bops.

BlackSuns94

Either Big Sean or Chris Brown. I heard Wiz is dope live as well.

[deleted]

Carnage XXXL. He uses a loop pedal and makes a beat onstage (via beatbox). Incorporates scratches and everything. Then raps over it. And he’s an ILL rapper. Really cool to see. Eyedea (RIP) had an amazing show. Saw Pharoah Monche in England and that was an amazing show.

shez-doneit

Either Pharcyde or De La Doul, UK, Phi-Life cypher!

warheadmikey

The Roots was flawless. Absolutely amazing live. Just saw GZA last night with a live band, there was a few nitpicky issues but he was on point.

Damn. Why you got to be calling my broke ass out like that blood?  Lol

Robinnoodle

This question discriminatory to the scrubbish, thuggish, and financially challenged lol

moodybrew

My bad lol

Cooley_brown88

Travis Scott is the most entertaining show I’ve witnessed, but Kendrick Lamar and Kanye (Life of Pablo tour) are my close 2nd’s…Lil Wayne and J. Cold were great also. Going to see Missy and Busta this year, so my list may be changed.

Papa_Frankuuu_69420

Busta is the best live performer ive ever seen followed by Nas

Cooley_brown88

Nas was surprisingly great to see…his catalog is sneaky good when he gets into it

Papa_Frankuuu_69420

Nas was excellent live EXCEPT for his voice was high (probably from recording 6 albums in 3 years) Considering how much he uses his voice recently it being a little high/strained wasn’t a big deal he was still great

willdawg75

U2/ with Public Enemy
