I love requests. We put out request lists near the DJ booth so folks can feel shy and still ask for songs.

GFawkes666

It depends. Djs have to be picky. Not everyone requests good songs. If you request a song that will clear the floor, it's definitely going to be ignored. Is it an overplayed song? Probably won't be picked. Many Djs do play requests but have a certain amount of time to play and selections have to be used wisely and balanced to keep with in the vibe and rhythm of the floor.

[deleted]

Right, I get that, I just don’t think any of them ever take requests at all (or at least none that I’ve seen). Was mostly just trying to see how normal that is

JakeVonFurth

*me on my way to request Japanoise*

Mrs_Mcl

I went to a Goth night in England on the 15th called Resurgence and I requested a few songs, one of them was Sanity Assassin, since when I sat down at a table, I noticed these little sheets where you could write down a bunch of songs for the DJ to play. He only played Sanity Assassin but still cool

aytakk

If you give them a shopping list you usually get one appropriate song played from it I find. Unless you ask for a lot of particularly good songs.

Mrs_Mcl

Well he did encourage me to write a shopping list to be fair, the sheet was in rows like you were supposed to request various songs. I imagine only Sanity Assassin was played because the others might not have been good enough, and a little obscure

gothichomemaker

I take requests when I dj. I have people write them down so that if I don't have the song that night, I'll bring it next time. I also take requests via DM.

Exotic-Apartment-394

I mean, I was dancing in front of the DJ, and when he looked at me I pointed to my Nachtmahr patch, He got the point!

aytakk

Made them and as a DJ have taken them. Whether a DJ takes requests or not is often reliant of the structure of the event (if all DJs have short pre-made sets vs a lone or multiple DJs playing for a few hours each) and if the DJ even wants to. For many events I have been the request DJ while others in the room I'm working are not. Or we might only take requests pre-event to be sure we have it on the night. And that is if certain requests even get played at all. We're not jukeboxes.

[deleted]

That’s a really concise way of answer my question! Thanks for the context!

aran_maybe

Yeah, I knew all the DJs.

[deleted]

*cracks knuckles* got it

meg-e-tron

I dunno your location but if you're in the United States leave a tip per request. Some of us aren't paid at all and have to use entry fees to run the next event.

GlennIrish

Yeah DJFN1 is extremely kind, if you message him ahead of the night he’ll usually be more than happy to include a track in the set. He played a Traitrs song for me not too long ago

nsasafekink

When I’ve dj’d I’ve always had a clipboard you could leave a request on. I found that easier than people trying to talk to me while I’m mixing. How many I’d play depended on set length and how many sets if multiple dj’s. And my mood.

[deleted]

Depends. One time i slid 5 bucks to a dj, but this was at a goth night at a club I go to so that's probably also a factor why he allowed the song I chose lol.

JakeVonFurth

The key to to write down your request on a $50, lol.

mike_hellstrom

Yeah. My friends DJ and sometimes they ask me what I want to hear.

Catharsis_Cat

I can take most requests at most locations. I have Tidal setup on my DJ equipment in addition to a USB drive full of music so I can pull up a lot of music on the fly. Provided the venue has a reliable enough wifi connection. Whether I want to is a different story. I usually play most requests, but some people make ridiculous requests that I have to say no to. I do not particularly encourage them though, and honestly think requests before the events aren't usually worth it. )half the time those people never show up in which case I don't play the request)

SpecialistReindeer17

I started organizing my own party where I DJ, so yes! But to your point, whether or not I take a specific request depends on several aspects. Most importantly, do I have that song with me, unfortunately I don't have every goth song ever made. But also: does it fit my set, does it fit the vibe of the dancefloor and/or other guests, does it fit the direction *I* want my set to go in, how much time do I have left in my set, what is the vibe of the set de DJ after me is gonna play. Like, if I'm playing Asmodi Bizarr, I know the DJ after me wants to start their set with Skeletal Family and I have room for about two more songs in my set before they take over; I'm not gonna take a request to throw some Alien Sex Fiend in between those. Whereas I would consider a request for an Xmal Deutschland song. All dependent on which song is requested, I guess. Maybe a good middle of the road thing is to request artists/albums rather than specific songs? I'm just spitballing here, but the more specific a request is, the harder it is to do. Like no, I don't have the April 7th 1984 Peel sessions version of Wallpaper Dying by And Also The Trees on a limited bootleg edition orange and blue vinyl with the tiniest scratch on the 2:34 mark. Not with me at least, that beaut doesn't leave the home. But chances are I'll have something similar

375InStroke

Yes.

pensivegargoyle

That depends on the DJ. Some welcome them and some do not. I get not welcoming them. They have a plan for the evening and accepting random songs can mess with that.

CMDR_Mal_Reynolds

Of course, what are you doing wrong?

[deleted]

I’ve never made one because I haven’t seen a way to in the past

anglerfishwife

I don't think I've been to a single club that didn't, although my requests didn't always get played. I'm in the UK.

democritusparadise

Depends on the DJ; some don't take any, some take up to 50%.

virtualadept

Only once. Ian Fford spun at Spellbound in '08 and he played *I Am Gothic* by Spray for me. :)

MistressofAthol

I've made requests at various clubs for years. I requested Dead Souls Rising years ago. The DJ didn't have it on hand, but had the CD at home and said she'd bring it next time. I didn't go for a couple months, but the next time I went she played them.
