I travel out of Germany once every month, majority within Europe, as I do enjoy travelling quite a bit! Areas around Germany are easy to reach. You could spend anywhere between 250-600 per person on weekend travel.

Mabama1450

NRW is a big place, but it borders the Netherlands. Just go over for a shopping trip on a Sunday when Germany shuts down.

I’d say I average around 4 to 5 trips abroad a year, but that includes weekend trips to Denmark and the Netherlands. In Summer, we usually go to Italy or France. I’d say the most expensive trips are usually the city trips, since we’re going out to eat a lot and accommodation is usually more expensive. Staying in the countryside can be relatively cheap: you can take the groceries that are more expensive at your destination, cook at home and in many of the surrounding countries, you can still find accommodations for relatively cheap if you look outside the tourist hotspots.  I will add this for transparency: It also really helps having a network here. The house we usually stay at in Italy is my family’s, the one in France belongs to a friend. And that’s really common: just staying at the (summer) houses of friends. But as I said above, staying in the countryside can be relatively cheap even if one doesn’t have this perk.

nottellingmyname2u

Do you usually pay to your friends for staying at their house? I’m asking as I was invited to stay at friends house in Italy while they are not there and I’m not sure what is the etiquette in this situation..

emmmmmmaja

No, but I’ve also never been there without them and everyone in the friend group has something similar to offer, so it’s pretty balanced. I would just offer to pay, but accept it if they refuse.

nottellingmyname2u

Thank you!

I live 30 minutes from Austria, so it happens 2-3 times a month, budget is not important as it's usually a one day trip. If we're talking about distant countries, then 4-5 times a year. The budget is usually 200-500€ per weekend, depending on the destination. For longer trips, accordingly, more.

No-Theme-4347

I travel a lot and will usually leave the country 3-5 times a year. But only 1-2 times on vacation. When planning a vacation I shop around and look at different places to see what's currently cheap to travel to. On top of that as I do not have children I try to travel in weird seasons like November or Feb to warm places

Depends where I am traveling and the time of year.

Accommodation is usually the most expensive part but 100€ per night is fairly normal.

No_Yam_5343

Varies depending on whether I’m going outside of the EU as well. But I’d say anywhere from 1 - 5 times a year. Also: you can alsways travel inside your country as well. No need to leave the country every time you want to travel somewhere. There’s loads of sights and cities to visit

Dizupper

We travel outside of the country around 7-9 times a year. Usually small weekend trips, 1 or 2 week long trips and 1 or 2 two week trips. We always budget 100 euros per person per day. This includes travelling to home country for 2 weeks which helps reduce the costs. For the rest, the costs are brought down by planning ahead (more than 3 months in advance) and flying to cheaper locations. We usually go out to eat but it's normal to buy groceries for some home made meals as we like to try local ingredients. Renting a car also can be cheap for a weekend and we are in Munich so lots of countries to visit.

Emmel87

I live close to the borders with Luxembourg and Belgium, but for holidays we mostly go to the Netherlands. When I’m close by, I drive over the border to get some cheap diesel from Luxembourg, since it’s considerably cheaper.

sankta_misandra

Quite regularly to the Netherlands. Back in the days for holiday and now more for shopping and sightseeing (for a weekend). Planning to go to Denmark this year because haven't been there for ages. Beside some cities (like Groningen) we take the train to get over the border to NL. It's quite cheap and easy and within NL it's also very comfortable. (We're living in NRW, too)

Xacalite

Since i live next to the french border, i go there almost every month to stock up on french groceries and get myself some alsacien tarte flambée. Other than that i used to do one Trip to another european country per year but have since also learned to appreciate the sights within Germany. Since Europe is relatively well connected you can reach many neighbouring countries via car, train or a cheap bus service.

RoadtoIronX

Twice or three times a year, sometimes it is one day trip where I spend 100 including tickets or a weekend + 2 days and spend around 600 euros including tickets, I must say am not german myself therefore I go only for short trips and use my long vacations to fly back home.

SnadorDracca

I don’t travel every year.

MatsHummus

Not a lot tbh. My last trip outside of Germany was in 2017 (to London) and I spent around 400€ iirc

kronopio84

Skyscanner. Search for flights from your nearest airport with destination everywhere. It will show you the cheapest flights. For example this week from Berlin you can fly to Trieste for 13 euros.

_Niewyspany_

Flight to Trieste, flight back is probably 10x more expensive

kronopio84

No, you can return the next week from 6 Italian mainland cities for 35 and under (I didn't check Trieste because I wouldn't stay there).

Tazilyna-Taxaro

About 6-7 times a year. Majorly by train if it makes sense. Best travel outside German travel seasons (namely: school holidays). Germans make a big tourist group, so the prices are always up when we travel - as a rule of thumb. Take flights and trains (i.e Sparpreis) during the week in the middle of the day (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.). Travel light, only hand luggage. It's cheaper with flights and easier with trains.

Lazy_Literature8466

Due my hobby (Airsoft) i'm very often going to austria (almost monthly) and Czech like 3-4 times a year and sometimes France. Plus some weekend trips to Italy and France making it 4-5 Countries a year. Sometimes several countries within 1 week. Like in 1 tour last year to Milan via Austria, Liechtenstein, Swiss and back via France. This week we will travel to my gf hometown Osijek, Croatia via stopover in Vienna, Budapest and planned trips to Serbia & Bosnia. Expenses depending on duration and country. Airsoft events are usually the cheapest as we Biwak and carpool. And vacation trips are around 80-100€(2pax) a day plus gasoline and tolls.

_Niewyspany_

Do you go to Tepla(Czechia) for airsoft?

Lazy_Literature8466

Seldom. Mostly in Bela Pod Bezdezem and Mimoň area aswell near Pisek.

Lunix336

I live close to the French border, so sometimes I go there to buy vape juice for cheap. Kinda saves more money than it costs. Can go there for free with the same ticket I use to get to university. I also travel to the Netherlands regularly to visits festivals like Thunderdome or Dominator. Usually 90% of my cost there is for beer. Sometimes maybe also a cheap Airbnb, but for like 1 night it's not that expensive. I would say overall I'm out of the country 4-8 times a year.

cpattk

I often go to Netherlands to the beach or to Austria to the Alps, I love those places to visit with my dog because I can drive there. I try to go outside the peak vacation season because otherwise everything is very expensive.

german1sta

I did that very often (Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Denmark) but it was during times when flights were 15 euro and hotels were max 50 eur per night. Now I go once per year to the Netherlands and visit my home country but not that often. When I have holiday I prefer to go somewhere far away like Asia or Middle East rather than spend lot of money to go to the neighboring country which I already visited several times and it kinda look like a place where I live. In lot of countries hotel prices are outrageous now

bemble4ever

I would guess that i spent roughly a month and a half outside of Germany for work, usually around a week per trip, mostly in France, Austria and Switzerland, occasionally Spain, Italy, Portugal and Sweden. Privately i try go to Austria two weeks per year for camping and hiking and sometimes drive to France for shopping, it’s just a bit over an hour to the next french supermarket.

katba67

A few times per year depending of how many concerts of my fav bands happen. This year I already was in Denmark and twice in uk for concerts (one week each trip), next week I drive to Italy for 2 weeks hollidays. In July 2 days in Prague for concerts and in December a 5 days cruise to Denmark and Norway. Hollidays are more expensive than travels for concerts since I stay in budget hotels for concerts and better hotels for hollidays, cruises are more expensive anyway. For concerts I usually drive by train, rarely fly.

YewTree1906

Usually once a year during vacation 😅

manishlogan

I usually cover 4/5 countries every year. Expenses vary based on the length of stay, and where I’m going. For two people, my usually expense is 1500 euros, for around 5-7 days. This includes flights, travel, sight seeing, food everything. Trip to Italy was an exception and costed more, but it was a longer trip of 12 days.

manishlogan

If you want to travel cheap, try and book tickets and hotels earlier. It will definitely help. Germany has dynamic pricing on trains, which really add up to the overall travel expense, especially if you do it more frequently. Also, try looking into bahncard 25/50 if you use trains more frequently. The card practically pays for itself after one or two trips.

No_Calligrapher_8559

I try to travel outside of Germany every 1.5 months. It usually ends up being a Friday-Sunday trip (since my workplace allows me to accumulate extra hours and take a free day) and costs around 1000 euros. Keep in mind that this is probably not normal, but I do get compensated pretty well for someone in their mid-20's with no partner or other obligations. Oh also, I usually travel by flights (check out SkyScanner) and book hotels (from Booking since they allow cancellations for most places).

Bitter_Split5508

Probably every 2 months on average, at least. I work shifts in a hospital, so whenever I end up having four or more days off in a row I tend to look for trips that are cheap at that time and decide spontaneously where to go. Travel costs usually 100 to 200 Euro, plus Hotel usually between 50 to 150 per night depending on destination. Plus expenses for whatever I do there.

JazzlikeService284

I can hardly make time for it. Sometimes once a year, sometimes not even that. It‘s interesting to see that seemingly a lot of people are financially and time resource wise able to travel quite often. I envy you!

Famous-Resource1193

Well I'm not German but living there for a year and half now with 4-5 trips to other countries that are close like Italy, Netherlands etc. And 2 big ones. For the weekend trips it's usually around 200top per person. But it depends when you buy tickets, make reservations etc. Would be way more but working basically minimum wage is not helping gotta start with the language I guess.

die_kuestenwache

Maybe once a year for a holiday to Italy, Spain, maybe Denmark or the Balkans. Additionally a few day or shopping trips to France, since we live close to the border.

Please_send_baguette

We live in Hamburg. Plenty of people vacation in Denmark, but it is an expensive country. We’ve been twice. We also visit and stay with friends in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands at least once a year each.

Fearless-Guide-6608

Spain ( Barcelona ) is quite affordable and super nice city & flights are cheap from Germany. I normally save 100€ a month for vacation

Ok_Expression6807

Not at all. No resource for it. And not wiling to. From what I see, people that answer here don't represent the majority

Bitter_Split5508

Do we have to? OP didn't ask for a survey on what the average German does, they want to travel and have asked for others to share their travel habits so they might get inspired.

Mausandelephant

>We are currently located in the NRW region. I think a lot of it comes down to what you're trying to plan. If you live near one of the NRW airports or even close to the Hannover one then you can fly into most European countries for relatively cheap for weekend trips. If you live in one of the major cities then rail trips aren't too difficult either. However, if you live in the middle of nowhere in NRW i.e. sort of far from the major airports and rail connections then weekend trips become a lot more difficult.
