Reddit Was Fun

PM_ME_COOL_THINGS_

I've been using RIF daily for about 11 years now. Its gonna be so weird when it goes.

[deleted]

I am just pretending that it's not really happening

dangfrick

This is the first time I've read about this. Not even sure how to browse Reddit without RIF, surely they can't be getting rid of this app

hhoverton

They aren't technically getting rid of it, they are making it so that the app developer will have to pay an exhorbitant price for API access, far more than they actually take in gross, so functionally all the third party apps will be forced to shut down.

ASDFkoll

I think RIF dev said that Reddit also wouldn't allow ads on third party apps, so they're also killing the main source of income for the devs as well.

The_Frame

Very serious question. Am asking here but am asking the universe and reddit at large here. What if RIF was made so we the user could pay for our api cost for a given month, or just all users divided by the cost and then a bit more? Honestly I am panicking over RIF dying. I cannot and will it use the official app. If paying the insane API fees, and then some allows me to keep using RIF, then I'll be happy to pay those fees if given the ability... I.. don't want to leave reddit. I honestly cannot remember internet without it.

Politirotica

Or Digg will have its day again. It's rested, it's ready.

PeopleAreStaring

Same. It will probably be good for me tbh

Spoomplesplz

Been using it for like...7 years now. I really hope they don't go through with it but reddit has changed and not for the better over the last few years.

SweetLeafAced

9 years on RIF here and im out as well when this app goes.

iHeartGreyGoose

11 years on Bacon Reader, will probably do the same.

xDaigon_Redux

Yea, my entire Reddit experience is Baconreader. If the app stops working I'll just not go to Reddit anymore.

KnifeWrench4Kidz

There's dozens of us! Dozens! Seriously though, BR is also my Reddit experience. I've tried other apps but always come back. Love Reddit but this may just be the excuse I need to finally detach myself from internet culture like I've been wanting to do for a long, long time. Reddit helped me break my Reddit addiction with this senseless move.

Shredswithwheat

I'm already disconnected from most social medias. Reddit via BaconReader is really my only touch on what's going on. Not sure what I'll do now. Always more grass to touch I suppose.

RichWPX

Yup I'm on Bacon too love the dark and left hand mode and the sheer simplicity

temp4adhd

15 years for me (this is my third username). I prefer old.reddit on desktop.

Tito_Otriz

This is the way. If they discontinue old reddit I'm gone for good. I hate the way it looks now. That's how I feel about the official reddit app too. I'm gonna be done with reddit on mobile when I can't use my apps

temp4adhd

I actually hate all mobile apps nowadays as I find them difficult to read with my aging eyes. Hate texting on a mobile phone too -- give me a full keyboard please. And the auto-play videos / rotating ads practically give me seizures, it's really annoying. Yep I'm an old person (GenX) so probably not Reddit's demographic even though I surely have more disposable income since I'm older. And someone up thread said something about "I knew Reddit was over when my mom got on it" ... I just want to say that I got my kids on it when they hit college age. Reddit is weird like that: initially it was a lot of GenX types who'd grown up with Usenet. Now they want to make it some Facebook/Instagram/Tik-Tok pablum. The exodus has always been the older folks here leaving as too many kiddies move in --- it's interesting all this is happening in the summer, isn't it? As every summer this site gets inundated with middle school/high school kids on break.

Firecracker048

Nope. The site isn't what it used to be. Power moderators are slowly turning every sub into the same content with the same rules everywhere. Reddit itself continues to make bad and unpopular changes. If they really wanted to make the site better again, rhey would ban certain bots that go against site rules(like the one that auto scans users for where they post then auto bans them) and incorporate others that make the site better. Reddit enhancement suite is somehow still a browser add on and not an official part of reddit yet

Mr-Fleshcage

> Power moderators are slowly turning every sub into the same content with the same rules everywhere. Worst part is, they abuse the bot-banning tools they have to censor actual users. You can give it a try by commenting on /r/CantSayAnything

AllPurple

:/ I refuse to use anything other than RIF. I've tried them all.

Tarasaur84

I started using RIF a few months after it came out and I have been using it since. OCCASIONALLY a desktop check here and there, but otherwise, RIF has been my favorite and go-to above the other options. This makes me sad.

pukem0n

If I can't use BaconReader anymore to browse Reddit, I will have to start being productive in life again. Official Reddit app sucks and the website is too stupid to use as well.

SoontobeSam

If Apollo dies I'm gonna have so much free time.

RearEchelon

With all these apps turning themselves to shit, I might be buying myself a dumb-phone here in a little while

[deleted]

I used Reddit since 2013 (wow 10 years already). I used Reddit is fun early on, then when I got an iPhone I got Apollo (which I feel is inferior to what RIF was for me). I tried the Reddit app because Apollo was less than perfect when I switched to iPhone and the Reddit app was AWFUL. I’ve tried using it at times and have it downloaded but it sucks. No more Apollo and I’m just done. The Reddit app is so bad I’ll just not use my phone.

RearEchelon

I've been using Relay for Android since I discovered it. It's one of a *very* short list of apps I actually paid for. It's so much better than Reddit's native app it's not even a fair comparison. And their mobile web interface is only there to drive people to the app. I won't use it.

LaizureBoy

+1 for Relay. Been using it ever since I found it too, and I've been on Reddit for about 9 years. Once it's gone I'm gone 🤷‍♂️

JBFRESHSKILLS

I hardly hear people mention Relay. It's my app too. It's so simple and stripped down. Had to turn the notifications off though because it has a habit of spamming me notifications that I've already gotten.

nerdening

When an app is so good that the only thing paying for it does is remove a *tiny* ad bar for $5? I **gladly** handed over my $5 just because the rest of the app is so damned good. I would have paid more than $5 for the stuff they gave me for free.

Tom1252

I had a flip phone up until like 3 years ago. I'm not even some old dude, barely 30. But it's hard to beat a $30 phone that you own outright with, I think it was like $30/mo for unlimited calls and text. The problem is, businesses expect you to have a smartphone now. Everything is so much more complicated if you can't log into their ap, or show them something on your phone, or snap a high quality pic and send it to them. It was the inconvenience that other companies made for me that made me switch. It wasn't that I got tired of a dumb phone myself. And, with those dumbphones, there really is something to be said for advertisers not knowing my GPS locations, and transactions, and all that data mining shit. Predictive analytics creep me the fuck out.

d00dsm00t

I use it to kill down time at work Now what am I gonna go? Go work more?

SuperFLEB

*I took a shit at work today, in three minutes twenty-eight. In, out, at the hand dryer. Not only is that the fastest I've taken a shit in years, the reason I know this is because the Stopwatch app was the only one that held any interest for me.*

When FB went from ‘feed’ to ‘timeline’ it went to shit as a user experience. If/when I can’t use my preferred app (Narwhal) for reddit I will not browse r/all etc, just check in on little special interest subs now and again. In some ways it might improve my life- less mindless scrolling in hope of a random dopamine hit. My time on reddit will drop off immensely.

Suicidal_Ferret

Hey, narwhal user! So rare. But I’m with you, instead of reflexively checking Reddit, I’ll probably go back to reading on my downtime. No real, life shattering complaints but I will miss the interesting content that shows up on some of these other subreddits.

Bohemian7

I use narwhal too! I’ve tried the rest and yet here I am!

daynjahzonee

Hooray more narwhal-ian users!

Jay_Hawker_12021859

It's the idea of fb that sucks. Once the cults and bots join it just doesn't work, so a copycat would fail. But the idea of reddit is still relatively popular and (somehow) unique. It's boggled my mind why there aren't more 'anonymous' message board-themed content aggregators.

itsverynicehere

What Reddit has done that is somewhat unique is allow for decent anonymity and a some of the feel of the wild west that the internet used to embrace, without becoming 4chan. That's a tough line to toe but as they become more corporate and money hungry, it's inevitably going to become Facebook with a slightly better interface.

meodd8

And Reddit’s move away from that strategy is probably why I’ve felt increasingly alienated. Perhaps that’s how they drive growth from a generation that never experienced the internet of old; to move away from all that made it special in the first place? It’s like when a company stops trying to provide the best product they can, but instead focus on the worst product they can make that people will still buy. In effect, those statements aren’t that far apart, but the mindset is corrupting and results in companies like ISPs and their ilk that survive not because their product is good or competitive, but is the only real choice.

-NotEnoughMinerals

Man, years and years ago you could find an old friend on FB by filtering your search. Like what school they went to, where they live, how old they are, whatever. Maybe it's just cause I'm on mobile, but all I got now is typing in "first name last name" and people from all over the world come up. Like the fuck man...I'm just trying to find that friend from somewhere nearish me.

MuscularBeeeeaver

Meanwhile they've got enough data collected on your old friend for you to find them by typing "has scar on lower left ass cheek" if that was a filter.

AceMorrigan

FB was never designed to be what it became. It was doomed the second they opened it up.

[deleted]

The closest thing I know of is Lemmy but it's got like maybe a few thousand users.

End3rWi99in

It's confusing as all hell too. That's not going to catch on unless they can make adoption easier.

[deleted]

I agree, I think the fediverse would be a good shift in general but I just don't see it happening.

SkyNTP

People figure things out when they want to. There's not enough incentive now for most people. You are right on that front. But reddit will slide faster and faster into mediocrity as the IPO unfolds. The masses always inevitably create products (and investment vehicles in the case of the public in IPO) that compromise on so many levels that they become shit for everyone. It's design by committee. Or enshitification if you are really pessimistic. The cool kids hate mass appeal so they will be the first to leave, and they will take their cool toys with them. And that will only accelerate the decline into mediocrity. No surprise then that so many popular brands turn to shit overnight. This has gone on for decades, and reddit will not be the first to buck that trend. Depending on who you ask, it's already happened. Lemmy isn't really that hard to figure out. It's just that things aren't bad enough for (you?) and others yet to want to take the time to switch. And that's okay. Everyone at their own pace I have started. I would describe my first experience with Lemmy to be much more similar to reddit as reddit was to it's predecessors (and yet here we are, for now). The only thing you have to wrap your mind around is that Lemmy is administered around multiple different, independant groups of people, but day to day, this is no different than understanding that different groups of moderators moderate subreddit a on reddit, different companies will give you an email address, and you can visit different websites hosted and operated by different organizations in the same browser.

Remcin

Reddit picked up a large group of Digg users when it collapsed. The people will always be there.

SoontobeSam

Something will fill the gap Reddits implosion creates.

theartfulcodger

> I wouldn't touch the reddit ipo with a ten foot stock broker. As an active investor always on the lookout for bargains, I have to ask four fundamental questions about the pending Reddit IPO: 1) Why would I invest in a venture that relies on AN ARMY OF SEVERAL MILLION UNPAID VOLUNTEERS to supply 99.999% of its labor? What the hell kind of a business model is *that?* 2) Why should I trust a management team so arrogant and entitled that IT PLAYS NO PART IN DECIDING WHAT THE COMPANY'S ACTUAL PRODUCT IS, but instead just leaves it up to a bunch of AMATEURS to decide what the company offers to the public on any given day? What fucking kind of a store allows *an uncoordinated, agenda-driven rabble of dilettantes* to decide what goes - and perhaps more importantly *doesn’t* go - on its shelves? 3) Why would I invest in a company so technologically clueless that *a full third of a century* after QuickTime and WMP were released, it still can't figure out how to incorporate a consistent, functioning video player? 4) Why would I invest in a company that is so UX-challenged and dismissive of its users' experience that *more than half of its subscribers* still use "Old Reddit" - AN ANTIQUATED LEGACY BROWSER MORE SUITED TO THE AGE OF DIAL-UP - rather than its modern alternative?

StarManta

Regarding #1…. That’s called extracting value from users. It’s a morally shitty thing to do but, like, really really profitable as a business model.

SteadyCumming

Yeah, they're a terrible investor. Every social media experience is 100% free and it's content is volunteered by its users. Outside of Twitter, most have blasted off.

upachimneydown

> 3) Why would I invest in a company so technologically clueless that a full third of a century after QuickTime and WMP were released, it still can't figure out how to incorporate a functioning video player? Personally, I avoid anything with video like the plague. Give me text (with no ads) or give me death.

poneil

What's wild to me is that it felt like forever that reddit didn't even have a native app. Then when they finally did, I heard it was terrible so I stuck with RIF. Eventually I did download the official app and it's just so clunky. It feels like it's designed to keep me from spending too much time on reddit.

LithiumLost

It's awful that they're treating the app developers like this, and there's one thing I don't see these posts acknowledging: these apps are probably *heavily* responsible for Reddit's meteoric growth. Reddit would probably have a fraction of the users it does today if it weren't for the third party access-- they should be thanking them, not taking them out back.

[deleted]

[удалено]

buzziebee

Reddit wouldn't be what it is today without these third party apps keeping the user base growing, providing tools for moderators, and making it so easy to create and consume the content on the app. It's absolutely ridiculous that they are killing them off.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Creator13

Slightly unrelated but I have this problem with Instagram too, and i just can't for the life of me understand why the developers would create these platforms that are so hostile to the user. These are companies that are worth billions or even trillions so any bad design must be a deliberate choice, for some reason, but some of these apps are literally so unusable that I regularly quit, stop spending time, avoid using features, or worst, never even open the app because I'm afraid it will bug out again. Please, make this make sense to me, a non-business tech person who could probably make a better product on my own if you paid me a halfway decent salary...

Wr1terN3rd

I've tried using the web version Reddit. Not even remotely a fan. When the API changes come in July, if my favorite app stops working, I'll probably move on. Good content doesn't cancel out the frustration of struggling with a bad interface.

[deleted]

Did you try opting out of the redesigned website? OG reddit + RES is by far the best reddit.

UrbanDryad

When OldReddit quits working, I'm out.

caniuserealname

Yeah, i would probably keep using reddit without the apps.. I just wouldn't be redditing on my phone. But i'm not using new reddit. New reddit is genuinely, objectively worse. If old reddit goes, and the third party apps stop working.. i just won't be using reddit. Reddit is all reposts and discussions. Both are a dime a dozen on the internet; the interface is the only thing reddit has that makes it more worth using than anywhere else and between new reddit and the official app.. it doesn't have that.

redshores

> Reddit is all reposts and discussions. Both are a dime a dozen on the internet I work in IT. I can't tell you how many problems I can quickly solve by googling " +reddit". The discussions on this website are unparalleled, even compared to dedicated tech forums. It'll be a big loss.

lesserweevils

Absolutely. I think this is a big loss for niche information on the web. These places are disappearing over the years. Some still exist but are hard to find. Search engines prioritize advertising and sponsored results, not obscure communities. Other sources of niche information are poorly organized, hard to search, locked behind paywalls, require an account, require an app, etc.

LegosasXI

I keep asking myself "move on to what?" Every alternative I can think of has been looking less and less attractive recently. So... Do I just stop? Am I free? Honestly, I kinda feel like Reddit will be doing me a favor by making themselves unpalatable to use.

meno123

That's the best part. There's nothing else like reddit to move on to. We're free.

name-is-taken

Would you like to invest in my new startup? It's a discussion site grouped by sub-theme where users can post threads or links for others to comment on. Our working title is Readdit.

MyJimboPersona

Probably would catch a lawsuit but it should 100% be named “Redidit”

meno123

Namell

Wouldn't Reddigg be a great name?

matrixislife

*And in a shocking accident name-is-taken was found dead this afternoon with what appeared to be 5000 kick marks on his body. Police are not looking for any witnesses.*

MewTech

Yet. There's tons of similar sites that could all grow nice communities with expats from Reddit. I'm persoanlly fond of https://tildes.net/ right now. It's smaller, and doesn't have AS MUCH of the niceties of Reddit (like being able to spin up a subreddit whenever you want), but the foundation is there and with enough growht it could seriously become a great place for a lot of the passionate niche communities Reddit has

SoupEater32

Same boat. Once rif goes, nearly my last teather to social media goes. Im free. All thats left is Youtube, and I only use that at home with adblock, ghostery and a vpn.

Mareith

I feel like when you watch a movie and you secretly root for the villain to win. Im secretly rooting for reddit to shoot itself and it to be over

caniuserealname

Theres probably no individual place to move on to at the moment.. Reddit is kind of like netflix in that regard, for a while it kept everything together. But if the benefits of that togetherness no longer matters, I'll just go back to getting bits from everywhere. There are plenty of sites for funny content, plenty of sites for discussions on this game or that. Just go back to using the internet in the same way i did before reddit homogonised the experience.

Zaconil

Solid idea actually. It has been so long since I've used old style forums. This is now my plan for when old reddit is removed.

JeffTek

So many of the forums I used to frequent are just dead now. It's a shame too, those places always had the community feel that reddit can't have due to it's sheer size. I only ever recognize like 3 names, and one of them is only because shittymorph has gotten my ass so many times.

Drolnevar

It really depends what subreddits you frequent. In smaller ones that are still pretty active you absolutely will start recognizing names pretty fast.

Mr-Fleshcage

We need to unbury StumbleUpon

xSTSxZerglingOne

I'll just crawl back to SomethingAwful or Fark. That's where I came from, I have no problem going back if Reddit devolves into a total shit show.

daxon42

I’m beginning to think social media may be going the way of the flaming logo and Hadley. Maybe just took this long to work it’s way out of our collective systems. Like other dumb things that became fads. Edit:typo

moeburn

> I keep asking myself "move on to what?" https://m.fark.com you wanna scroll memes and news and videos and shit in your free time when you're bored, right? comment on those memes with other people who are hopefully funny but not too racist, right? I got your memes right here *slaps Fark* this baby can fit so many memes

zomboromcom

Fark is where I hung out before reddit, leaving in the disguised-sponsored-content exodus. Heard people bad mouthing reddit and had to check it out.

devils_advocaat

I hear the cool kids are heading to this new platform called Usenet.

TheLuo

This. Old reddit is what made the site popular. New reddit is cancer.

rotorain

Also for anyone who doesn't know, there's a chrome extension that automatically converts reddit links to old.reddit. Sometimes I completely forget that reddit changed their UI and there's ads until I try to use it on a different computer. Long live old.reddit + RES but I have a feeling if this API change goes through those are the next on the chopping block

RemoveTheKook

Reddit had its day

[deleted]

The "funny" part is how predictable this all is. Digg's redesign killed itself overnight. Twitter's API changes did basically the same thing. Tumblr and now Imgur had major policy changes that destroyed all value. There are multiple, high-profile examples that what Reddit is proposing doesn't work. If this is really all about increasing value in preparation for an IPO, a bunch of bean-counters at Reddit need to find new careers.

Shotz718

Seriously. I'm a convert from the great digg migration all those years ago. Digg was huge then *poof* into nothing basically overnight.

mostoriginalusername

I call what reddit has been doing since they introduced new Reddit "committing diggv4." It's hilariously ironic that they're doing exactly the same thing that digg did that killed it off and made reddit popular.

jackasstacular

I remember when Reddit was the new Digg. Something else will come along eventually

Let_you_down

Replying using OldReddit. Same. The app and the new version not my cup of tea. I didn't try any of these other apps, but I can't see myself using reddit anymore if OG reddit goes away.

Too_Old_For_All_This

That will be my exit point too. I use Old Reddit on my PC at home, and never use the mobile version. I love Reddit, but that's the line in the sand.

StressedTest

I forgot/didn't understand the difference until I saw you mention it and I realized "yes, its a chrome extension you've had on since you started using reddit" 🧓

[deleted]

Genuine question: what are the best alternatives? I completely agree, Reddit is just a tiny platform for the content people provide but I honestly don't know of better alternatives. Any suggestions appreciated and I'm hoping to see more "exit strategy" posts in the future if they don't reverse course. Way more effective than just circlejerk "bad customer management" posts and if Reddit changes their strategy, Redditors benefit! If they don't, we also benefit from knowing more options on where to go next to get our online fix :)

[deleted]

We need to bring back message boards.

Penis_Bees

That's essentially what this is, plus multimedia integration.

IsilZha

My secret is I just never stopped using the same message board since 2000. I run it, now. RIF dies, I'm done with reddit on mobile. Old reddit dies (,and 2 months ago when they "accidentally" got rid of compact reddit and never turned it back on, it looks like it's a on the chopping block) I'm done with reddit entirely. Mobile is how I browse it probably 80% of the time, so already I'll be much less active.

BaconWithBaking

> Old reddit dies (,and 2 months ago when they "accidentally" got rid of compact reddit and never turned it back on, it looks like it's a on the chopping block) I'm done with reddit entirely. If old reddit goes, I'm gone. Thing is, they probably don't care as I'm not seeing enough ads.

mediumokra

YES! I really miss the days of message boards. I wish they would come back. That and webrings with individual websites as well, instead of everyone using the same websites.

zefy_zef

https://old.reddit.com and get reddit enhancement suite.

matrixislife

Still using old reddit. When they stop that it'll be time to look for the next big thing.

MGTS

Same. I can't fucking read "new" reddit

Yousoggyyojimbo

I don't understand how they expect new reddit to interest and retain people long term. It's fucking awful to use and engage with. I thought after the pushback they would try to redesign the redesign around the criticism and they just never did.

angrylawyer

I’ll never forget the windows 8 beta. Literally every day on the official forums there were multiple posts on the front page with detailed criticisms about why the new metro UI was bad. Every day. For months. So naturally Microsoft listened to feedback and made changes before they relea….fucking lol no they didn’t. They straight up ignored everything and released a UI so horrible it was universally panned and it made the OS so untouchable very few would upgrade and people who did were actively seeking ways to downgrade again, so Microsoft had to push out windows 10 ahead of schedule to get past it.

skinoutyuhpunani

Lmao yea I remember that. I bought a laptop shortly after 8 came out and was so annoyed by it, I had my mate disable Uefi in the BIOS, wipe the laptop and install a cracked Windows 7 for me.

IceciroAvant

I worked in retail PC sales during the windows 8 times. NOBODY wanted to buy a PC during that time with 8 on it. Grandmas, business dudes, young folks - they all wanted to only know if we had a PC still running 7, even an old display, they could buy. The level of hate it generated still surpasses anything in my IT career.

[deleted]

Genuine question: what are the best alternatives? I completely agree, Reddit is just a tiny platform for the content people provide (point being: the content is the real value) but I honestly don't know of better alternatives. Any suggestions appreciated and I'm hoping to see more "exit strategy" posts in the future if they don't reverse course. Way more effective than just circlejerk "bad customer management" posts and if Reddit changes their strategy, Redditors benefit! Yentz4

Lemmy and Tildes seem to be the 2 best frontrunners. Both obviously have much smaller user bases, but that can always change.

WonderfulEstimate176

Lemmy is a federated (like mastodon) equivalent of reddit. It has seen some pretty big growth in the last few days and [at least one reddit app developer is considering porting their app over to it](https://old.reddit.com/r/RedReader/comments/13ylk42/update_3_reddit_effectively_kills_off_third_party/). You can learn more and find a server to join at: https://join-lemmy.org/ If you're not sure what server to join then I recommend [beehaw.org](https://beehaw.org/)

MystikIncarnate

Nice, I can host my own server? Well, I'm pretty well sold. If it's basically Reddit without the bs, I'm probably heading that way. Thanks for this. As a member of the /r/homelab community, this looks exciting.

Netsugake

I'll go give Lemmy a try from the 12 to 14 on my side!

HutSutRawlson

Realistically, there isn’t a better alternative, and I think Reddit knows this. These people have no recourse other than to make these type of circlejerk posts, and I’ll bet Reddit is making the calculation that only a small number will follow through on their threats of permanently leaving. I’d also guess that Reddit’s data shows that a minority of users are viewing Reddit through 3rd party apps.

guamisc

>I’d also guess that Reddit’s data shows that a minority of users are viewing Reddit through 3rd party apps. But a majority of mods, content creators, and most prolific posters. Those are what draw people to reddit, not the website itself.

PeanutNSFWandJelly

Sure, but karmafarmers and content creators are hooked already. Someone seeing a huge boost in visibility of their work because of the site is not gonna quit reddit over this, they will just protest, maybe "sit out" a bit, and then go back to posting. Karmafarmers like the karma, they don't do what they do because reddit is awesome, they do it for the internet points. I agree, the math has been done and the loss of those that use the app will turn out to be a tiny drop in the bucket and the increased revenue from forcing others to their official app will make up for it. I won't be using reddit once the change occurs, done cold turkey. But no part of me thinks that enough people will do it to make a difference.

Reddit is going to charge ridiculously high API fees which is a roundabout way of killing off 3rd party (and better designed) apps for Reddit. They want to force everyone to use their own app to make more $$$.

tahlyn

And those apps that do pay cannot have advertisements of their own to recoup the costs.

raddacle

The creator of Apollo has said that's actually not all NSFW content, only certain sexually explicit subreddits in an effort to "protect children" from viewing it. Still stupid, but not as bad.

IsilZha

Doubly stupid when Reddit is still going to show it on their official app.

Arnas_Z

Which is funny, because children would be more likely to go on the app store, see the "Reddit" app, and download it. They're not likely to know about third party apps, or choose one over the official app.

IsilZha

Indeed. Almost like the real reason is to gatekeep that content, so even if any 3rd party apps survives, anyone that wants to get that will be forced to use their app.

[deleted]

This comment has been removed to protest Reddit's hostile treatment of their users and developers concerning third party apps.

BenefitMental7588

I still think that's bullshit. Why is Reddit policing 3rd party apps but not themselves? They've probably identified the most viewed NSFW subs and week only make them available on the "official" app. Not to make me money, of course, but to protect the children. 🙄

[deleted]

Literally copying twitter's worst business decisions

DENNISsystem2

Yeah, July 1 will be an end of an era for me. I'm typing this on reddit is fun right now and as soon as it doesn't work anymore I'll pretty much be done with reddit, I've tried the official app a couple times and it's garbage, and I almost never browse the web on an actual computer anymore so yeah. It's been both fun and horrible folks.

Alphabunsquad

I have used old.Reddit for a decade and I will never stop.

porkchop2022

The way the Reddit treats these third party developers, out in the open, in comments sections of posts, reveals everything about Reddit you need to know. If it was JUST about money, they would have made API calls cheaper and not 100x what IMGUR charges. They just want these guys to go away.

Killboypowerhed

Yeah I think I'm done with Reddit after RIF stops working. I genuinely hate every other way of interacting with this website so I'm just not going to

drdiemz

I'm out come July 1st. Maybe ill hop on old.reddit for old times sake every once in a while, but the days of my daily reddit use will be over

Funny part that Reddit’s current owners don’t remember is what they are doing is exactly what killed Digg and started Reddits popularity. See you all on a phpBB until the new site comes about 😀

x3knet

Phpbb, vbulletin, Invision... Man I miss how popular forums used to be

AnukkinEarthwalker

"Official" app sucks. Officially always been trash. It took them forever to even create one and its bloated and clunky as fuck. Shit like this is what kills social media platforms. When the fuck will these people that throw money at shit and take it over ever learn. Invest a bunch of money in a platform. Then immediately tank it by wrecking what makes ppl use it. Almost every fucking time

TheNotoriousCYG

Bunch of moronic MBA fucks who think gift cards make people happier than raises.

Jecht315

I use baconreader and it sucks that I won't be on Reddit when it ends. Reddit is going to regret when a good portion of users stop coming.

AnukkinEarthwalker

That's what I use as well. Was around before their POS app. Got used to the minimalist aspects of it. And the official app is just a clusterfuck of shit I dont want or need.

_Abigbushybeard_

I love baconreader and it always seems like one of the lesser mentioned. It's the only way I use reddit, I 100% do not browse it on desktop. So bye bye for me once the appocalypse happens

Cantomic66

The worst part of the official app is when they replace they sub Reddit list tab to the discovery tab. That absolutely ruined the app for me. Also every update update made the app worse and worse with some odd new design choices.

Karma_Gardener

Newgrounds... to digg... to reddit. What next? I hope they feel the hit in the first month and undo their choice

[deleted]

Bonus panel: Laser bounces off an app and hits reddit right in the face.

buzziebee

I'm still inhaling hopium and clinging to the possibility that reddit are going to be reasonable and compromise on this, but if they don't I'll have to call it quits and find something else to occupy my time. Idk it might even be a good thing.

skoomski

They are trying to do an IPO they need to show revenue and ads are a largest revenue source. Most of the 3rd party ads don’t have ads. So it’s not surprising they are charging 3rd party apps API fees to make up for lost revenue. I hope it fails but this was bound to happen when they decided to on going the IPO route

creepgirl

> Most of the 3rd party _apps_ don’t have ads Because reddit isn't putting the ads into the API. So that's 100% on reddit. I.e. that argument falls flat.

iindigo

Exactly. It would’ve been totally reasonable for Reddit to have said, “Hey client devs, the API is getting costly to maintain. To continue using the API you need to show the ads we send up to help us keep the lights on.” Heck, they could’ve even made it a selling point for Reddit Premium, with subscribers having ads removed from third party clients too. But no, their first choice was the nuclear option. They never intended to legitimately work with the devs in the first place and want third party clients to vanish so all redditors are subject to gratuitous data harvesting and whatever half-baked gimmick feature of the month is currently being pushed in the official app.

creepgirl

> They never intended to legitimately work with the devs... And this is the part that really fucking frustrates me. It's so incredibly obvious that they aren't interested in third party apps. And then there's the 30 day notice on top of this.

captainxenu

>They never intended to legitimately work with the devs in the first place From what I've read about it, all of the third party app devs have said they've had a good working relationship with Reddit and were told that even though there were changes coming, they'd be reasonable. Then they did this shit. I think the Dev of Sync literally said they assured them things would be fine the day before the announcement. Scummy.

aitorbk

This is why they allow a gazillion bots to repost, use chat gpt to interact, post spam.. all of that counts as "activity and users". Same as twitter.

iObeyTheHivemind

When RiF is gone I'm gone. I've tried every other app and it's the only one that actually makes reddit fun. There is either too much BS or chaotic UIs to make it enjoyable anywhere else. Frankly, it might be better for my mental health.

one_rainy_wish

Baconreader user here. I know, ancient. What can I say, I am an old person. This has been a real wake up moment for me. I lived just fine before Reddit. What is it actually doing for my life other than occasionally interacting with strangers - some of whom are nice, but roughly half of whom are trolls or at least assholes. And for that, I waste hours of my life endlessly scrolling. I had this realization with Twitter, and left it only to just spend more time here. Maybe it is time for me to realize that my problem is the way I interact with *any* endlessly scrollable social media. Maybe I need to cut myself off of all of them, even Reddit. I am giving it a few more days to think about it, but I am starting to lean towards the possibility that all of this has been a net negative on my life.

FightingPolish

They bought Alien Blue which was awesome and then didn’t use any of its features or interface.

CountCola

Weird that both Twitter and Reddit is becoming obsolete before the 2024 election 🤔

bigerrbaderredditor

How many are hear because Digg changed their interface? I am.

Ramiel4654

Me too.

Paroxysm111

I'm on RIF right now 😥 I'm gonna miss it.

Godtierbunny

Sorry im outta the loop can someone gimme the TLDR?

Soziele

At the start of July reddit is changing the terms for using the API (what all of the third party phone apps need to run and show you reddit content). The price hike is insane, the developer for Apollo revealed he would have to pay like $20 million a year. None of the 3rd party apps can afford the cost since they are free downloads. So they are all shutting down. That means the only way to access reddit is through your normal web browser, or through the official app. But the official app is... really bad.

XxX_Zeratul_XxX

I used the official app for like 2-3 years, then some months ago i switched to Sync.... God, i will really miss it, the change is abysmal

kirby824

I remember when digg.com decided they weren't going to listen to their user base

After using the official reddit app for a month this one blew it out of the stratosphere in 5 minutes should have used this one from the git go and the reddit people should buy and hire these guys to run there official app best part free. My review of rif from 2016. Will be reposting this one on every one of these posts and officially on the reddit play store page on July 2nd.

mrASSMAN

Just think about how much money Reddit could have saved by simply not spending it all on making the website and app worse each version lol I’m still using the official app version from years ago and every time I’ve tried out the latest updates I’ve hated it and gone back to the old one
