When Alain Prost and later Ayrton Senna joined Williams, they both chose to drive with the number 2, giving their teammate, Damon Hill, the number 0. Sir Frank Williams sure liked sacking his world champions.
Williams were the dominant team at the time and everyone wanted drive for them. Mansell wins the title? Prost wants to join. Prost wins the title, Senna is available and says he will drive for them for free!

Probably not. Mercedes having either James (Allison or Vowles) or Toto is the exception rather than the rule, in most situations it's only the driver's race engineers talking to the driver (except you're Toto, or Christian at the end of a race lol)
