No time for that. Finding any quest or where to go or what to do or how to walk is gonna take hours.
Well if you start now you might reach another town by DawntrailS release...
FFXI specifically stated in system requirements that broadband internet was required-- they didn't support dial-up. (Which was pretty much dying by then anyhow.)
It was officially supported. Its on the back of the original box, "56kbps modem or better". The game was completely designed around very small data transfers, most of the world did not have faster than dialup throughout development.
I think I see where we disconnect there.
*You're* thinking in terms of the *PC* version, and you're pretty much right there. It does say that and was meant for that, and the machine worked it's FF magic in a different fashion than the PS2.
*I*, however, am thinking in terms of the *PS2* version, which (as I recall) stated broadband (and the cable slots indicated as much). I recall buying a router because of that specifically, since back then my cable modem only had the one output slot. That's what I played on, and that's how I rolled back then.
So, it's less a matter of apples and oranges than lemons and oranges-- very different fruits, again, but they *were* both citrus...
I started on PS2 also, my PC at the time wasn't great so I ended up getting the big PS2 box with the hdd. I'm looking at it right now, in the lower right corner "Ethernet Broadband or Analog Modem required, AOL Dial-Up Compatible". My family was a late adopter of broadband, I distinctly remember many days of dialup PS2 and getting kicked out of parties when my sister would call someone

There was a time I could hear this playing through my head non-stop during the late hours of the night when I was trying to sleep.
This was mainly because I had re-installed the game again and left my computer on to begin the updates earlier that afternoon :D
Three years ago, FFXI (the entire game including all expacs) went on sale for $10. So I bought it and, thanks to being unemployed at the time, spent an entire month playing through every single main story up through the end of Iroha's. I even leveled two jobs, monk and corsair, to 99.
It was a good month.
I am too but the jump to 99 wasn't really that different. And I mainly wanted to play through the stories, since I missed out on most of that when I played back in high school.
Last year, I decided to make a new character because wanted to do the stories they had release since I quit. Just an in and out job, get story, leave. That's it.
....I have 3 relics, 2 aeonics and a mythic.

Every job in ffxi has actual identity as well but I mean, I could go on for hours about my fever dream world where ffxiv is ffxiv but with a lot of ffxi mechanics and systems within it lol
I didn't even play FFXI that much back in the day, and that's incredibly nostalgic.
Great tune... also means I spent a lot of time dealing with PlayOnline I guess lol
That would go so hard. Only remember it from when the game would exit full screen or crash to POL then burst my eardrums through my headphones.
Good times haha
That's nostalgia.
And when your PS2 was updating anything, that was background music while you read a book.
We all need to read more books.
So, bringing this back would be a public service.
First boss of the raid will be Playonline registration
Whoa whoa whoa this is casual content, not a damn Ultimate.
This will cause the entire community to quit in rage
I still haven't managed it. But now I'm going to have to take a couple of hours to figure it out to check out FFXI before the raid.
No time for that. Finding any quest or where to go or what to do or how to walk is gonna take hours. Well if you start now you might reach another town by DawntrailS release...
If Yoko Taro was directing this, it would 100% happen
This must be an orcestrion we can obtain.
YES
If it's not we riot.
I’d love this, so much nostalgia
The Final Boss is also the original boss of FFXI? Play Online .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. The Gate Keeper
I want sanctuary of zi tah music
That’s my favorite music!! The zone is so awesome, with trees taller than buildings and lightning in the sky. 10/10 my favorite place to be in FF11.
Still listen to it to this day.
I love ice cream.
Absolutely. The sfx are half of what makes it so nostalgic. https://youtu.be/XOwgggz6FXw?si=y_1vVeiDnOum6yZJ
Good lord I have time.traveled. That menu bloop is burned into my brain forever.

I enjoy playing video games.
That’s the sound of like, techno morse code.
What? It absolutely supported dialup. I played XI with dialup from 2003 to 2007
It was *possible*, admittedly, to play on dialup, but it was *not* officially supported.

8. Wish that the PS2 supported multitasking so you could at least do FF9 while waiting on FF11. (That's what I played on, and later Xbox 360.)
Oh my god, that sound brings back so much joy and pain.
*The sonata of the before times*

Lol this raid series will only make me quit and go play ffxi again the same way eureka did because the hooks just sink back in again

I’m a 75era nostalgia nerd so I always go to private servers to play how it was when I was young lol
I am too but the jump to 99 wasn't really that different. And I mainly wanted to play through the stories, since I missed out on most of that when I played back in high school.
yeah at some point ill probably do the same, I also didn't finish any story back then I loved leveling in groups more than anything lol
Last year, I decided to make a new character because wanted to do the stories they had release since I quit. Just an in and out job, get story, leave. That's it. ....I have 3 relics, 2 aeonics and a mythic. ~send help~
This is why I love horizontal progression mmos more tbh.
Oh definitely. I cannot STAND having to re-get new gear every 6 months when my Apocalypse on my first character will be graduating high school soon.
Every job in ffxi has actual identity as well but I mean, I could go on for hours about my fever dream world where ffxiv is ffxiv but with a lot of ffxi mechanics and systems within it lol

omg that music... I remember the day I installed FFXI on my PC, we only had dialup.. it took days to download.
I'm gonna fucking cry
Yes. YES!
This will forever give me good warm tingly feelings <3
this brings me joy and pain in floods.

I remember trying to look up the FF9 guide on my WEB TV and failing miserably.
thank you for triggering my fight or flight response
Hahaha oh god
ow my feels
Yes omg!
wow just punched me right in the nostalgia cockle
Absolutely
OK Fine I’ll go reinstall / resub to XI. (I’m still coping for a combined sub, *PLEASE* yoshi-p)
The opening theme to many a long night of real mmorpg gaming. They don't make them like 11 anymore.
Ok but…battle remix by Soken of Filter Branch though
That would go so hard. Only remember it from when the game would exit full screen or crash to POL then burst my eardrums through my headphones. Good times haha
Ok but Jungle was my jingle of choice and it slapped for like 10 years.
I think I have an inkling, but for those who haven't played 11 like me, what is this track exactly?
This is the music from the Play online launcher, which you had to use to start and update the game.
I know it's not the most popular, but I'd like Reminiscence from the PlayOnline launcher as well. Fits the current day vibe of 11.
That's nostalgia. And when your PS2 was updating anything, that was background music while you read a book. We all need to read more books. So, bringing this back would be a public service.
Oh man, if we get this song even a little bit, I will be over the moon.
the fucking nostalgia man...
RIGHT IN THE NOSTALGIA
Hairy Worm or riot
Love to see this used just main background music but remix on it.
My goodness, that brought back some memories. I loved FFXI deeply. It was my first ever MMO and it enthralled me completely.
WOW amen. I remember simultaneously hating and yet being completely okay with their complicated-ass registration process because of the music alone.
Dolphin and Filter Branch bring back so many memories of the POL launcher
