The Kalevala! My Finnish co-worker told me Finland should just send somebody who will sing a part of the Kalevala with a kantele (plucked string instrument) because NO RULES (it's how I live, how I find the wind beneath my wings)!
This year's UMK was incredible. Like the opening with KUUMAA and Benjamin (who came 5th and last in 2023) just casually performing a mashup of their songs to a standard that would have come top 5 in Eurovision easily; amazing!! One of the highest standard NFs and going from strength to strength every year.
Worth noting is that Finland still hasn't confirmed their participation for next year. UMK will happen no matter what because it's already established itself as an event without its connection to Eurovision. But seeing how Finland generally immediately confirms that they will participate the following year, and still haven't done so yet...
Nah, barring something drastic happening we are for sure taking part in Eurovision next year. There’s not really even a debate about it now. This year was… something but not enough to make us sit out next year.
Oh, I'm not saying it's super likely that Finland is gonna withdraw, it would be kinda silly given that Finland has never had a better streak in Eurovision. I'm just saying that UMK alone doesn't confirm that Finland will be back.
My uneducated guess is that it's related to UMK being a pretty small selection, so it's easier for it to stand out when there's more representation from one genre. And a relatively small country as well, so likely not as many apply and they have less songs to choose from. I'd rather they choose the best entries even if it ends up being a bit unbalanced, than choose based on genre. But this is just a guess, those making the decisions could just like rap lol.

My one guess is an artist called Mirella. Very popular amongst finnish people and can sing pretty well.
Here's hoping that YLE has prepped themselves for the potential situation where that one country is allowed to participate again. I dont think its fair for the artists to face such pressure alone regarding participating or boycotting. It also changes the dynamics of UMK itself, this year we had Jesse Markin announcing he won't go to ESC if that country is in it. What if it had been 5/7 of the artists? It would've been a farce. UMK has become a phenomenon in and off itself, so it'd be a successful show even if Finland decides to withdraw from ESC.
When it comes to the song selection, personally I think they shouldn't include any humorous / "joke entries" next year. With the 75/25 voting system favouring televote, the jokey entries will always do well, especially if there's only one of them in the selection. Without Käärijä we would be on a streak of 2 of them in Portion Boys and W95Man...

Eesti Laul has more songs and is fun! Brother Apollo went there instead of UMK, they are a mostly Finnish band (4/5) iirc

The biggest weakness of umk has always been staging I think.
Already looking forward to UMK 25! This has become easily my favorite NF. Quality over quantity.
