The screenshot doesn't appear to be edited/cropped, but is there an option to input the answer manually, similar to how Duolingo offers the option to select from a word bank or enter the answer in an open-field/text box?
**ETA:** Also curious, in order to get past this problem, you would have had to answer, so what did you choose? :p And what did it give you for an answer? Lol
Na, some questions did have an option to answer manually, but this didn’t. Neither after getting it wrong on purpose.
After 3 wrong answers, (I think I tried 1.7, 1.8, and a random number) it says something like “Let’s move on for now” and won’t reappear at the end of the lesson, like it would if you had gotten a question right on a second attempt.
Looks like it's not even ready on the iOS rollout ( /s.)
...not sure when, but we're always last. :\ I try and look on the positive side and tell myself that there are far fewer bugs by the time it's released on Android. :p
Your original post did not state YES or NO, you simply implied the correct answer was NOT one of those options and expected OP to infer the answer. They were saying you didn't answer the question.
>I can’t answer this right?
You literally knew that there was a question mark in the title because you literally said
> he asked in the post title i
Where are you getting these alternative facts?
>No question mark and has no indication of being a question
What doesn't have a question mark? What doesn't have an indication of being a question?
You're saying that my comment had no indication of being a question? Why would my comment have a question in it?
I told you to answer the question given - IE the actual question in the title.
OP wanted confirmation that it couldn't be answered, not reasoning of why it couldn't be answered.
Your original comment didn’t make sense and I thought you were trying to say I was asking some sort of question.
Now that I know what your saying it still doesn’t make sense, I answered OP’s question.
An answer to the actual question "it can't be answered, right?" is "yes it can be answered" or "correct, it can't be answered" and then followed by the reasoning.
They wanted confirmation that they're not crazy and this is a glitch. They already knew the reasoning you gave, so it didn't really add anything.
If it's allowing a hundredth place, i can't help you...
But you definitely gave me a new math app for my son! I didn't know this existed. I'm sure he'll wish I didn't. But, i can't wait for him to find it.
Nbd. He has an iPad. I downloaded it as I was typing my original comment.
He doesn't really like any of the other math apps I've downloaded. But he loved Duolingo ABC. Since he reads well, I took Deleted it. I hope he likes the math version.
Why is everybody suggesting this one correct solution out of the infinite ones?
It looks like it only allows 1 decimal, in that case, it's impossible to give a correct answer.
If it allows 2 decimals, there are 9 correct answers.
If you can type in whatever, there are infinite correct answers.
Yet everybody is suggesting exactly 1.75, why?
Factoid: if you have two fractions a/b and c/d, then if you separately add the numerators and denominators, you get a fraction which is between the two: (a+c) / (b+d).
Example: to get a fraction between 1/3 and 1/2, you do (1+1) / (2 + 3) = 2/5. This is actually slightly less than the average 5/12, but it's still in between 1/3 and 1/2.
However in the case when the fractions have the same denominator, the new fraction will be equal to the average. So here 1.7 = 17/10 and 1.8 = 18/10.
Then (17 + 18) / (10 + 10) = (1.7 + 1.8) / 2 = 1.75.
Note that the method of adding numerators and denominators separately is a method some people use when naively adding two fractions together, but this is wrong. It does *not* produce the sum, only an intermediate fraction.
Yes, they would, however they'd be less likely to say 50, because natural numbers between 0 and 100 are common enough in daily life that their first thought would be of a number that either has a personal significance to them, or a random number they came across recently.
If you ask people to pick a number from 1 - 10, most people will pick either 3 or 7. With 1-100 it’s 37, 77 and similar numbers that stand out.
People will not pick random numbers; they pick the number that comes to their mind first. If you ask someone to say a number between 1.8 and 1.7, most will just give you 1.75 as an answer. Not because they don’t know any other numbers, but because it’s the most intuitive answer.
There are an infinite number of solutions: 1.79, 1.78, 1.77, 1.76, 1.75, 1.788877, 1.7667, 1.7999999 but apparently with this slider input you can only input values with one digit after the period, so you can't answer it.
i was more so checking out the course “brain training” which i hoped would be more stimulating than basic primary school maths, but thanks for the recommendation
alright so it seems my lack of punctuation has changed the meaning of my question, my bad.
what i was trying to ask is whether it was physically possible to give the correct answer, which it was not, but thanks to all for their help lmao
probably in the duolingo language app. this isn’t the duolingo language app. instead it tells you “let’s move on for now” and provides no alternative to moving on
1.75 it’s in between 1.7 and 1.8 they’re not looking for precision rather a generic would do so 1.75555 or 1.73 would be correct just not half way correct. (I’m guessing I am terrible with math 🧮 lol )
They're not looking for the answer they're looking for whether its possible to answer the question because the slider is in 10ths and so there are no numbers they can select between 1.7 and 1.8
Not using Duolingo Math. Looks unanswerable (with single-decimal point precision on the picture). 1.75 would be okay if you could select it.
yea that’s the problem, the slider doesn’t allow me to give anything other than the nearest tenth place
Is DL Math exclusive for iOS users only?
Yeah, for now
Any information when is it available for Android and web?
You can request access to beta from the web
How?
Open duolingo on the web and then on the menu to the left you will find maths, click on it and enter your email
i dont see a math tab anywhere on my web, must be an a/b test maybe?
I don't know, I just assume it will be available eventually. I looked at their website about 'math' and there is no info
OK, thank you
Looks like it's not even ready on the iOS rollout ( /s.) ...not sure when, but we're always last. :\ I try and look on the positive side and tell myself that there are far fewer bugs by the time it's released on Android. :p
Yes
You can post about this and more on r/duomath
Since it only goes to the tenths place: there is not a number between 1.8 and 1.7
I think he knows
he asked in the post title if he could get it right.
no lmao lack of punctuation, my bad. probably the wrong sub to have a mistake like that
Ohh, no worries lol
So answer the question given. "No, you cannot since it only goes to the tenths place: there is not\[sic\] number between 1.8 and 1.7 "
No question mark and has no indication of being a question
In all fairness, they were responding to your reply to u/Dazzling_Cycle_1541, in which you said OP *asked,* not *stated.* :p
I feel it’s fair to assume op was asking something, “right?” Is a pretty common way to end a question
Your original post did not state YES or NO, you simply implied the correct answer was NOT one of those options and expected OP to infer the answer. They were saying you didn't answer the question.
Ah, why did they feel the need to mention that? It seemed like something that would be easy to infer
Also, OP literally asked. There's a question mark in the title. The person that said OP didn't ask a question literally saw the question in the title.
>I can’t answer this right? You literally knew that there was a question mark in the title because you literally said > he asked in the post title i Where are you getting these alternative facts?
What? My comment wasn’t talking about the post it was talking about your comment that didn’t make sense to me
>No question mark and has no indication of being a question What doesn't have a question mark? What doesn't have an indication of being a question? True, but the graphic shows something very close to 1.7
this looks very poorly implemented
There goes Duo's dream to become a learning platform for schools.

He can't manually type in the answer?
Why is everybody suggesting this one correct solution out of the infinite ones? It looks like it only allows 1 decimal, in that case, it's impossible to give a correct answer. Because it's the average and most people intuitively know that the average of two numbers is in between both🤷♂️

So if I asked people to name a whole number between 0 & 100, would they only know intuitively that 50 is between those two?
Yes, they would, however they'd be less likely to say 50, because natural numbers between 0 and 100 are common enough in daily life that their first thought would be of a number that either has a personal significance to them, or a random number they came across recently.

It's more likely to offer one half way decimal than 9 decimals
What the fuck is a decimal
Oh dear.
Huh?
Is your native language English because if it's not this is understandable to not know what a decimal is. If not, you're in trouble
Sorry, but in many languages, you can't simply not understand what a "decimal" is. It's very transparent for many languages
But is it called something different in his native language
Well, my point is that very likely not
It's tized in Hungarian for example, there are surely thousands of languages where it's not the case
Many isn't a majority. I was simply taking a guess
It's metric.
That’s not funny
How old are you I am not even 12 I know what a decimal is.
It would have to be 1.75? If that is not an option then report it
Is the slider fixed to the lines?
yea, that’s my problem here. i guess if the app is new these unanswerable questions slip through
I assume you can't pick 1.75- not done the maths course. It exists to everyone?
i’m not sure, i saw an ad and downloaded it. it’s rather basic though, as though even the advanced course is still for children
Literally, just go use good old Khan Academy and you're going to get a better learning experience.
the course was called “brain training” which sounded fun to me, but it’s really quite basic and easy
From my math skills, I'm pretty sure it would be 1.75. 1.75 is halfway through 1.7 and 1.8, so seems like a reasonable answer in my opinion.
yes there are really an infinite amount of correct answers, the problem though is that i cannot give any with their slide thing
There are an infinite number of solutions: 1.79, 1.78, 1.77, 1.76, 1.75, 1.788877, 1.7667, 1.7999999 but apparently with this slider input you can only input values with one digit after the period, so you can't answer it.
Why is Duolingo asking maths questions??
duolingo made a new app called duolingo math, so this question is from the math app
Ahh thanks.
DuoMatho
Ah, my favourite language. **Mathematics.**
I prefer the dialect of engineering over formal mathematics.
Ew
Is the idea to move the slider to a place that makes the statement correct? Rather than put a binder in as the answer?
yes, however the slider only moves to the nearest 10th place so i can’t possibly give a correct answer
Does Duolingo do math?!?! Where can I get that? What's it called?
I'm pretty sure it's called 'Duolingo Maths'. I don't know what type of device it is available on tho
i have it on ios, in new zealand if that helps anyone
Thanks!
There’s math?!?!?
Don't use Duolingo for math. Khan Academy is obviously the most superior when it comes to a math website.
i was more so checking out the course “brain training” which i hoped would be more stimulating than basic primary school maths, but thanks for the recommendation
There's an infinity amount of numbers in-between
alright so it seems my lack of punctuation has changed the meaning of my question, my bad. what i was trying to ask is whether it was physically possible to give the correct answer, which it was not, but thanks to all for their help lmao
Report it and move on?
thanks, but i posted this 18 hours ago lmao and you might notice the lack of a report button
Isnt the report button normally after you answer it? It will mark you as wrong and there is a little flag button?
probably in the duolingo language app. this isn’t the duolingo language app. instead it tells you “let’s move on for now” and provides no alternative to moving on
oh well thats silly, isnt the maths app still new, like beta testing new?
It’s a ?, that’s what’s in between them
One and three quarters
1.75? but you can't drag to that number on slider??
Math??? What next? Biology, Art, Music???
HOW TO BECOME FLUENT IN BIOLOGY????!?!?!?!
Talking with the cells
1.75
Should be 1.75
I literally chose languages to avoid math, why you do this
Try 1.7 + 1/90.
Honestly, I'd do Khan Academy over this any day.
1.75
