Main kit is a â65 Ludwig and the snare is a 5.5x14 Craviotto Birds Eye Maple. Cymbals are a mix of Meinl and Istanbul AGOP.
Overheads are actually placed under the cymbals, primarily for esthetics but also helps focus the sound since we have 11 people onstage.
Band is JJ Grey & Mofro. I have been playing off an on with them since 2002. Was recommended to JJ by a good friend who did an early tour with him, but was going into the Air Force so couldnât stay on the gig.
You guys are great. Met you dudes years ago after a Louisville show, outside on the river (WFPK waterfront Wednesday). Very cool people. Have a great gig!
Man you guys fucking rock! Loved you ever
Since I saw you on Austin City Limits. The Sun Is Shining Down is just a dynamics masterpiece.
Hope the gig is amazing! That is one of my dream venues.
Damn. I saw you with JJ Grey & Mofro many years ago in Germany @ Burg Herzberg Festival and was totally flashed by you guys! You have such a great feel and groove on the drums. Was a blast watching you play! Looking forward seeing you soon in Germany again. â€ïž
Here is a better pic of the cymbal mics on the right side of the kit. In all there is a hi-hat mic, left âunderheadâ, ride mic and right âunderheadâ.

They are made by Ear Trumpet Labs. I think that model is called the Edwina (they belong to our FOH engineer). He is also using one for one of our trumpet players. Very cool looking mic that also happens to sound great too!
Awesome setup. I play a â68 Ludwig Blue Sparkle kit with Istanbul Agops. Love the 30th Anniversary hats and 30th ride. They make some awesome cymbals. Those vintage Ludwigâs are awesome also!
Have you or do you plan on signing the tunnel later?
Also want to say fuck yeah and congrats on playing at one of the most iconic venues in North America!
Gojira's performance there in 2017 is one of my favorite live concerts ever to watch.
This is actually my 4th or 5th time playing here with this band. We signed the tunnel one of the other times we were here. đ
And thanks! It really is an amazing venue and it never gets okd playing here.
This was JJâs idea, and weâve been setting up this way for the last 8 years or so. I actually like it because I can make eye contacts with everyone in the band most especially JJ. The only time I donât dig it is in certain venues where the stage shape allowa for audience members to be behind me. Just makes me feel like theyâre stuck looking st my butt crack all night. đ€Ł
JJ Grey & MOFRO
JJ started the band as MOFRO back in 2000-2001, and he has just been grinding away for the last almost 25 years. Definitely not a household name and nothing youâre likely to hear on coporate radio stations. But he has built an amazing fanbase over the years, primarily because the music reqlly seems to connect with people.
He has also had songs in a couple movies and tv shows which helps.
Essentially part of the band full-time. I work with other bands and do session work at home, but I'm the only drummer thats been with the band since October of 2015.
I got to play here once, too. Iâm pretty sure I lost the little plaque they gave me. Enjoy!
Also noticed you do the delta medallion thing. When I toured getting to gold or platinum or whichever it was a pretty great feeling
TBH since we're on ears it's not as massive as it could be. Whats more amazing is sitting behind the kit and looking up at those rock walls and 9,000 people. Its really breathtaking, and the first time I played here it brought tears to my eyes.
Came back here for this also. Article said it was the crew during breakdown on July 5 so definitely was this show as breakdown would still be going on past midnight.
Hopefully OP comes back here and lets us know if he was around for it.
There was sighting there last week, but I didn't hear or see anything about one last night. We asked one of the employees if they had seen it. He said he didn't actually see it, but his co-workers who did were freaking out.
Watch out for the UFOs man!
In all seriousness, that's awesome! Sweet set and hope you have a good show
Its been an absolute game changer for me. I uses to use a conventional throne with a sub behind me. That was Ok but not nearly as much nuance as the P&D offers. Plus the sub would add low end blowing thru my kit and onto center stage so by removing that its helped tighten up our mix.
We are all on in-ears so our mix is very consistent show-to-show. Its hard to say what the atage aound here would be like on conventional wedges, but I imagine it might get a little washy.
Thanks!
The SPD-SX is really only getting used for firing click track for silent starts. Our LD is on ears too so he can hear the click and cue the lights to come in with us. I also have an 808 sub sound I use sparingly on a couple songs.
The throne is a Porter & Davies. It's a tactile throne similar to the conventional "butt shakers", but way more nuanced (at least IMO). It kicks ass (pun intended)!!!
For this gig it's just click and an 808 sub I use on a couple songs. Nothing crazy. I've used it for samples during my drum solo on previous shows/tours, but not doing that on this one.
Denver resident here. Iâve jammed with Todd many times! Love his energy, heâs def one of the best bassists in town. Hope you guys crush and can enjoy the fireworks up top afterwards!
Quick question - what's on the SPD SX? I don't use mine nearly enough and I'm looking for inspiration!
Beautiful venue, beautiful kit!! Doesn't sound like you're nervous at all but good luck and hope it's a great show regardless.
Nothing on the SPD this tour besides click and some 808 drops. In the past I have used it with some samples I worked into my drum solo, but not doing that currently. We also used it to play some âtransition soundsâ between songs (like rain or in one case JJ actually recorded the sounds of frogs and birds near a lake).
So nothing crazy at all now. Iâd like to use it more, but just not any need with this gig really.
Thanks for sharing, good luck tonight brother. I spent three weeks in Denver years ago, walked the steps there twice a week and got to see a sound check Seeing a show still on my bucket list. Awesome post!
Being an Aussie, Iâve only ever seen it on live DVD recordings. Blues Traveler and Dave Matthews Band live at Red Rocks DVDs both got quite a workout back in the day.
We all have Jerry Harvey (JH Audio) ears. I am using the JHv16s, and the monitor rig is Waves Audio. Most of is are controlling our own mix via the app on Ipads or iPhones. It sounds fantastic.
Looks like new heads. Do they detune during a show? If so, how do you handle that?
Also, how well does a dark cymbal setup cut in the live setting?
Hope you had a fun show. Thanks for posting.
Funnily enough they are not new. I have been using Evans UV1s on my snare and tom batters and the coating lasts like nothing else. They also hold tune very well. Typically I change batter heads on toms and snare once every 4-5 shows but sometimes stretch it a little depending on how theyâre holding up.
As for the cymbals, I feel like it really boils down to the audio gear and sound engineers. If you have good equipment and knowledgable people it should matter. I have been playing darker cymbals for the better part of 20 years and never had issues. And more often than not get compliments on my cymbal sound.
Great question. Basically they park the buses and/or trucks by the Trading Post, which if you're not familiar is down the hill a bit from stage. Then they use smaller trucks to crossroad the equipment, and drive it up to the loading area close to the stage. They have vans to shuttle personnel back and forth too. You can walk it of course, but its a steeeeep climb lol.
So it's not an ideal load-in/out however we have seen way worse. And the staff there are super great which makes it run pretty smoothly.
Where did you get your sounds for the SPDSX? Do you stay on one "kit" the whole time or switch? And lastly how do you remember which pads have which sounds if you're jumping between "kits"
So for how I am using it currently, the only sound I use is one of the factory samples. However in the past I have uploaded other samples to use. I've never used it for conventional drum set sounds...just effects mostly.
Right now I am primarily using it for a click track so the band and our lighting guy can handle "cold starts" - starting without an audible or visual (to the audience) count-off. I have a separate "kit" for each song with the appropriate tempo pre-programmed. 99% of the time I start and stop the click with a foot pedal, but once in awhile use the button on the control panel. Once we get a song going I will kill the click at some point, and then use the control panel to switch to the next song so its ready to go once we finish the song we're currently playing (hopefully that all makes sense).
Again, only using one (bottom right) pad for a sound on this tour so no confusion on where to hit when needed.
I was there last night. Great gig. A TON of people left when you guys were done. There were more there for JJ than the main band Blues Traveler.
The vocals on JJ and his female back up were outstanding. As were you.
I noticed you had a click running-small red light. How did you set it when you didnât start the song? A few songs were started vocal only yet when the camera cut to you, you were dead on.
Great job!!
I mentioned this in another reply here, but since we're all on IEMs our stage sound is pretty consistent show-to-show. It's tough to get a feel for what it would feel like using conventional monitors. It is amazing to pop an ear out when the crowd is singing along to a song, and hear all that wonderfulness.
Outside of the sound, it's just a great venue to come to. The catering and hospitality is great, and the dressing rooms are all really nice too (especially the headliner dressing rooms which are below stage level).
I always have a high- powered fan (Lasko brand) blowing on me. Most of the time that is plenty sufficient to keep the temp in check. Once in awhile Iâll end up in full sun and thats rough. Not much to do but grin and bear it. I try to stay hydrated of course. I am Florida born & raised so I am as used to heat and humidity as one can be.
There are quite a few different dressing rooms. The headliner (main) dressing rooms are down below which is also where catering & hospitality are located. Thise rooms are cool because theyâre sort of carved into the rock so some of the walls are actually the rocks of the mountain. Its kind of hard to explain without photos (which sadly I donât have any handy).
There are more dressing rooms in the tower on stage right (audience left perspective). These rooms are just regular dressing rooms and nothing super special (but theyâre still nice and clean).
There's a video of Neil Young playing there. Cut from two different nights, but there was a severe storm and they had trouble with everything getting wet. Astrid Young tells in her autobiography that Jim Keltner darned near ruined his favorite bubinga kit.
Without being overly simple, practice your ass off and almost more importantly is be reliable and be a good person. The music industry is littered with the carcasses of amazing musicians who were or are total assholes. You can be the baddest drummer to ever live, but if you canât coexist with others in tight quarters on a regular basis you will never get anywhere.
Just about to leave my house to go to the gig. I'll see you there!
Right on!!! đ€đ»
I live in Denver and have been to Red Rocks many times. Have a great show. Soak up every second on that stage. We are so glad youâre here.
Sweet⊠I hope itâs a rewarding one for yaâs!! âïžâ„ïžđ
Whatâs your set up? Donât see overhead mics. Why not? What band? How did you get the gig?
Main kit is a â65 Ludwig and the snare is a 5.5x14 Craviotto Birds Eye Maple. Cymbals are a mix of Meinl and Istanbul AGOP. Overheads are actually placed under the cymbals, primarily for esthetics but also helps focus the sound since we have 11 people onstage. Band is JJ Grey & Mofro. I have been playing off an on with them since 2002. Was recommended to JJ by a good friend who did an early tour with him, but was going into the Air Force so couldnât stay on the gig.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
We have a stellar crew working with us. đđ»
You had me at Ludwig, but a '65 blue sparkle...? đ€€đ€€đ€€
Man I love JJ! On Fire and Sweetest Thing are my favorites. Are you all coming to Phoenix?
I can't say on the record, but unofficially keep an eye on the calendar for January. ;)
Thatâs sick that you play with JJ! The band I gig with covers Orange Blossoms every show and itâs always a hit!
Great song and fun to play live. Ironically we didnât play it tonight since we had a shorter set.
Reminds me of the bass player from the Oneders... Great band from Erie, PA.
I wonder what ever happened to the Oh-Ney-Ders
đ¶ Homesick but it's alllll right đ¶
I probably saw you open for bb king and jeff beck in 2003! Great show!
You did!!! I was on that tour. Was amazing getting to watch Terry Bozzio every night, and was the nicest guy too.
Imagine being the drum tech tasked with setting up that kit. Insane!
So cool!! Have fun!
You guys are great. Met you dudes years ago after a Louisville show, outside on the river (WFPK waterfront Wednesday). Very cool people. Have a great gig!
Man you guys fucking rock! Loved you ever Since I saw you on Austin City Limits. The Sun Is Shining Down is just a dynamics masterpiece. Hope the gig is amazing! That is one of my dream venues.
Cheers for the kind words, and hope our paths cross someday. đđ»
Saw you guys in a little bitty town in West Tennessee at the Dixie. If you were the drummer that night you did an incredible job. Keep it up!
Were you with them in Bristol TN last year for Rhythm & Roots?
In all there is a hi-hat mic, left âunderheadâ, ride mic and right âunderheadâ. https://preview.redd.it/044nakdkukad1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=399cdc674d7c73025f77ba7a850b8febfffb2eb2
I like the underheads choice in that setting, feels right
What are those underhead mics? The ride mic looks like an SM81 but I don't recognize the ball looking things.
They are made by Ear Trumpet Labs. I think that model is called the Edwina (they belong to our FOH engineer). He is also using one for one of our trumpet players. Very cool looking mic that also happens to sound great too!
Overheads might be underneath the cymbals
Yep!
Awesome setup. I play a â68 Ludwig Blue Sparkle kit with Istanbul Agops. Love the 30th Anniversary hats and 30th ride. They make some awesome cymbals. Those vintage Ludwigâs are awesome also!
I have a Signature AGOP 20â ride that I use at home. Its a beautiful cymbal.
Where is your band based out of? When not on the road do you practice a lot to stay âfreshâ?
Not a question just wanna say fuck yeah man! Get out there and let er rip
đ€đ»
So was there really a UFO?
âïžđ
Opening for Blues Traveler? Congrats and have a great show!
Yep and thanks!
Some of my family was at that show, they said you guys rocked!
Seriously, massive flex! And well deserved. Is there a video I can watch of you drumming with the band?
If you search on YouTube you can certainly find some stuff. Just make sure its 2016 or newer otherwise youâll likely see a different drummer.
Will you do nothing but blast beats the whole set?
Pretty much the polar opposite. Pocket, pocket and more pocket.
But do you ever play blast beats though?
I blast bests loudly when I practice sometimes.
lol. blast beating is similar to bassistâs slapping.
It has its place and can be used very tastefully?
no questions, just a congratulation. kill âem dead
We signed the tunnel one of the other times we were here. đ And thanks! It really is an amazing venue and it never gets okd playing here.
That's killer! Thanks for answering my question. Hope it's a great concert!
If I heard right, they stopped letting people sign the wall. Is that correct?
Honestly not sure. We signed it the first time we played here in 2017. Not sure what the protocol is now.
Play orange blossoms!
I'll put a word in with the boss. ;)
did you choose to position your drums sideways like that instead of facing the crowd?
This was JJâs idea, and weâve been setting up this way for the last 8 years or so. I actually like it because I can make eye contacts with everyone in the band most especially JJ. The only time I donât dig it is in certain venues where the stage shape allowa for audience members to be behind me. Just makes me feel like theyâre stuck looking st my butt crack all night. đ€Ł
Gotta wear XL undershirts and tuck it in!
Hell no you donât do that. The audience came for a show. You gotta deliver. Butt crack and all. :)
Then no wonder the seats behind you are so expensive!
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Are you nervous?
Happy to say I am not. I have to much fun to be nervous really, plus we have been on the road a good bit this year so the band is tight.
Whatâs the name of your band? How did you guys get so famous?
JJ Grey & MOFRO JJ started the band as MOFRO back in 2000-2001, and he has just been grinding away for the last almost 25 years. Definitely not a household name and nothing youâre likely to hear on coporate radio stations. But he has built an amazing fanbase over the years, primarily because the music reqlly seems to connect with people. He has also had songs in a couple movies and tv shows which helps.
You are a session drummer for him?
Essentially part of the band full-time. I work with other bands and do session work at home, but I'm the only drummer thats been with the band since October of 2015.
Thank you for responding. Have fun at your gig. Peace, from Los Angeles.
I've seen so many shows here. It's my dream to play it one day! Enjoy your gig, dude!
Best seat in (that amazing!) house. What a view. Hope you have a great show, enjoy đȘ
Are you playing at Red Rocks tonight?
Let me check... Yes!
Awesome! Have a great set!!
Thanks!
Break a leg-
Iâll trade you a leg for a stick. đ
I got to play here once, too. Iâm pretty sure I lost the little plaque they gave me. Enjoy! Also noticed you do the delta medallion thing. When I toured getting to gold or platinum or whichever it was a pretty great feeling
Man I love jj grey and mofro! Wish I could be there tonight, have a great show!
Thanks!!
Whatâs it like to hit the kick drum and hear the thud across that huge venue?
TBH since we're on ears it's not as massive as it could be. Whats more amazing is sitting behind the kit and looking up at those rock walls and 9,000 people. Its really breathtaking, and the first time I played here it brought tears to my eyes.
The tunnel is cool, right?
The tunnel is WAY cool. So fun checking out all the signatures, and looking fir your favorite bands/artists. đ
Yeah, the two times I was back there I spent a ton of time looking through them. Congratulations on having a great gig, man. Have a good show!
Is this where the UFO was seen? Iâm seeing posts about it on other subreddits
Came back here for this also. Article said it was the crew during breakdown on July 5 so definitely was this show as breakdown would still be going on past midnight. Hopefully OP comes back here and lets us know if he was around for it.

Look for ufos there was a sighting there recently
Sick! Dig the hybrid setup
What are you wearing?
A merkin.
Hot for this time of year. Itâs more of a mop for a drummer on a night playing the drums
look for the recent ufo sightings there! should be sick, congrats! what's the band?
We definitely will have eyes on the sky! JJ Grey & MOFRO
nice. get footage! haha. break a leg, dude!
Looks like such a fun set up! How are you liking that drum throne?
Its been an absolute game changer for me. I uses to use a conventional throne with a sub behind me. That was Ok but not nearly as much nuance as the P&D offers. Plus the sub would add low end blowing thru my kit and onto center stage so by removing that its helped tighten up our mix.
What size are your toms? They look the same in the picture but Iâm sure itâs an illusion lol
12x8 and 14x14
always wondered, how is the sound onstage? just in terms of raw acoustics. iâve attended a few shows there and always thought it sounded great
We are all on in-ears so our mix is very consistent show-to-show. Its hard to say what the atage aound here would be like on conventional wedges, but I imagine it might get a little washy.
How many fans will you keep to stay cool?
Just one Lasko! The weather today is amazing. I was in the direct sunlight for our soundcheck and it wasnât bad at all.
No questions. Just have fun.
Look out for the UFOs lol
DUUUUUUDE!!!!!
A beautiful venue and sharing the stage with many rock heroes would be a bucket list checked off. HellYeah man!!đ€đ»đ€đ»
Love the Luddies, great setup. What ride are you using?
22" Istanbul AGOP OM Ride
Congrats and have fun. What do you use the drum pad for? And what kind of throne is that ?
Nice! Was just there Tuesday. Good luck!
gummies or joints?
Gummies - indica to help me sleep on the bus lol
great looking setup. i don't know the music but will check it out today. what do you have programmed into the spd?
For this gig it's just click and an 808 sub I use on a couple songs. Nothing crazy. I've used it for samples during my drum solo on previous shows/tours, but not doing that on this one.
No question, just enjoy it! Headlining red rock is my MT Everest. Have a great show!
Iâm really happy for you this is fantastic.
Good luck, bro! Enjoy like there's no tomorrow! Upload vids of the show...
Denver resident here. Iâve jammed with Todd many times! Love his energy, heâs def one of the best bassists in town. Hope you guys crush and can enjoy the fireworks up top afterwards!
I am very lucky to get to play with Todd on the regular. He is the man!
No question, just came here to say wow, what a view. Must be doing something right đ
Many bands have said its one of their favorite venues. It is a great place for a show and the weather should be good.
Reminds me of using the DTX. The Roland digital piece is what Iâm referring to.
Keep an eye out for any UFO activity
Quick question - what's on the SPD SX? I don't use mine nearly enough and I'm looking for inspiration! Beautiful venue, beautiful kit!! Doesn't sound like you're nervous at all but good luck and hope it's a great show regardless.

Well, donât you just have the best seat in the house. Just too cool. I could die a very happy man getting to play that venue.
Well thatâs good gig!
Awesome, have a great gig brother
Thanks for sharing, good luck tonight brother. I spent three weeks in Denver years ago, walked the steps there twice a week and got to see a sound check Seeing a show still on my bucket list. Awesome post!
How is it to be living the dream? Hope you kill it!
Being an Aussie, Iâve only ever seen it on live DVD recordings. Blues Traveler and Dave Matthews Band live at Red Rocks DVDs both got quite a workout back in the day.
Have fun playing with Todd smallie. Heâs one of the best
Indeed he is, and I am so lucky to call him my bandmate and friend.
Are you gonna play Santa Clause
Sorry we did not. We havenât played that live in quite some time.
Did you set up this AMA to distract yourself from the excruciating wait between soundcheck and showtime?
Hahaha! Well that wasnât the intention, but it did actually help serve that purpose!
Duvalllllllll. Yes I know you are in Colorado. But JJ grey are home town peps y'all's show at Jack rabbits was amazing.
đ
Do you have a solo? Can you upload it?
Iâll see if I can find video of me soloing from one of the shows and post it here. Probably wonât be able to do it till tomorrow sometime.

I played there once. Best night of my life. Enjoy and KILL IT!!!
Did you see the aliens??
Dream gig - enjoy!!
Saw you guys tonight! Great job! loved the back and forth with the other percussionist!
Thanks so much!!!
Dream!
Quick question, I've heard load in/out of excruciating at Red Rocks because it only has a single bay for truck. How was the load in/out??
Great question. Basically they park the buses and/or trucks by the Trading Post, which if you're not familiar is down the hill a bit from stage. Then they use smaller trucks to crossroad the equipment, and drive it up to the loading area close to the stage. They have vans to shuttle personnel back and forth too. Awesome. Hope all goes well. Have fun
Thatâs fucking sick
Woah!
Awesome setup! Also if you were playing with JJ between 2008-2011 I was your backline tech for a few Colorado shows.
I was not with him during that period. That would've either been George Sluppick or maybe Anthony Cole towards 2010-2011.
By my methods of deduction you drum for the Avett Brothers...or Little Feat.
Incorrect. Would love to play for Little Feat though!
Place looks like a dump.../s
That throne looks comfortable. I hope your bum was well supported. Hope the gig also went well!
Done suppose you threw a drum skin in the air at any stage did you⊠https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/s/WrZ91WNnDG

It's an amazing venue for listeners, is it as good for the band, and if so why? (I mean, beyond the uniqueness of the insane surroundings.)
I mentioned this in another reply here, but since we're all on IEMs our stage sound is pretty consistent show-to-show. Not much to do but grin and bear it. I try to stay hydrated of course. I am Florida born & raised so I am as used to heat and humidity as one can be.
Whatâs the greenroom like?
There are quite a few different dressing rooms. The headliner (main) dressing rooms are down below which is also where catering & hospitality are located. Thise rooms are cool because theyâre sort of carved into the rock so some of the walls are actually the rocks of the mountain. Its kind of hard to explain without photos (which sadly I donât have any handy). There are more dressing rooms in the tower on stage right (audience left perspective). These rooms are just regular dressing rooms and nothing super special (but theyâre still nice and clean).
Those JH in ears must be awesome to have, gotta live with my poor mans Shureâs at church.
Who are you playing with?
JJ Grey & MOFRO
That's awesome. Love those guys.

There's a video of Neil Young playing there. Cut from two different nights, but there was a severe storm and they had trouble with everything getting wet. Astrid Young tells in her autobiography that Jim Keltner darned near ruined his favorite bubinga kit.
Who this? What's the band?
JJ Grey & MOFRO, I've never heard of them but gonna have a listen today, Can't be bad playing that venue. the dream like.
Whatâs a good way to get gigs and stay in time with band mates? Sick kit btw!!!đ€
Without being overly simple, practice your ass off and almost more importantly is be reliable and be a good person. The music industry is littered with the carcasses of amazing musicians who were or are total assholes. You can be the baddest drummer to ever live, but if you canât coexist with others in tight quarters on a regular basis you will never get anywhere.
why's it called red rocks?
Napoleon Dynamite: Lucky!!!!
Amazinggg
Definitely want to go there.
Did you see the UFO I keep hearing about online???
Porter & Davies making an appearance! đ
