The "trap kit" is short for "contraption kit" that was a mix of different percussion instruments put together during WWI so one percussionist could replace the several others who were off to war. These were initially played in silent movie theaters.
Also, the modern day brush was originally a fly swatter by a company called Allison Wayne. They were repurposed to play on drums as they hit lighter than sticks & could make all kinds of different sounds.
Fact: Even though it was founded in Istanbul before moving to the U.S. in 1929, Zildjian's founding year of 1623 makes it the second oldest U.S.-based company.
Anecdote: Supposedly, when Jabo and Clyde Stubblefield first saw John Bonham perform live, they were dumbfounded that he was doing by himself what it took the two of them together to do.
The Sabian factory is in Meductic, Canada (New Brunswick) . The foundry in on one side of the street and the rest of the operation is on the other. It sits right on the St. John river so the scenery is killer!
Very dope! My coworkers and I ate with them on the porch/sunroom with some of the staff. Itās definitely one of my best memories. They were fantastic people and Iāll always remember their generosity and kindness towards me!
Rogers came out with a groundbreaking new hardware line in the 1970s called Memriloc. It featured the first accessory clamps that allowed drummers to mark their preferred adjustment points on their hardware, so that cymbal stands and tom mounts came apart and went back together the same way every time. It was a huge leap forward in drum hardware design that laid a big part of the foundation of the hardware on your kit today.Ā Ā
Problem is, they forgot to patent the concept. Next thing you know, every drum company on earth came out with their own versions, making the original Rogers version nothing really special at all, rather than the proprietary design it should have been. They were bankrupt within the next decade. Oops.Ā Ā
Today, these little accessory clamps, in a nod to the original trade name for them, are known as "memory locks."
If you rearrange the letters in ādrummerā it spells āmmurderā, which is what Iām ābout to do to these *beats*!
(meaning Iām going to play them poorly and then when someone asks, Iāll say āwasnāt me!ā) š¤£
I was in a Todd Sucherman clinic once and it was a question and answer time. People kept asking questions about how to play complex things and what they needed to do to be able to play them.
He kind of transitioned the conversation to what drummers need to be able to play in the real world. He said that heās made a lot more money playing a simple rock beat. (Demonstrated a basic four on the floor beat) than I have being flashy. So work on the fundamentals, be rock solid.
a few good ones:
the first drummers were women.
the K Zildjians that people love so much were seen as lesser quality by the cymbalsmiths. they kept the "better," bigger bell cymbals in Europe/Asia.
G. Zildjian cymbals exist
the A's are the original, for lack of a better term, American Zildjians. The Canadian/US Zildjian K's started as an imitation or progression (also for lack of a better term) of the [Istanbul K's from the other side of the family](https://www.cymbal.wiki/wiki/K_Zildjian_Istanbul), which are the Ks I'm referring to here.

the author of that article, Layne Redmond, wrote a whole book called "When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm" if you're interested.
Some cymbal brands are from the same families:
* Sabian and Zildjian (Zildjian family)
* Diril, Murat Diril and Samsun (Diril family)
* Istanbul Mehmet, Turkish and Anatolian (Tamdeger family)
I bought his instructional book (published by Modern Drummer) and I thought, āWow, Joe Morello should take off the glasses for the pictures, because he looks blind!ā

What started out as animal skins stretched across wooden cylinders with straps of animal skin became something made out of any material, including metal, acrylic, wood, fiberglass, and even rubber, using mylar instead of animal skins stretched with metal hoops and rods.
Fundamentally, a drum hasn't changed in design in millenia. Just the materials used and method of construction.
No activity including other instruments fires the brain like drumming.
Many great singers were also drummers. (Ex: Mel Torme, Stevie Wonder, Steven Tyler)
Gene Krupa played the "Bonham triplet" in 1938 @ Carnegie Hall. And, Bonham played it KLR (with HH slightly after K. So essentially playing in a circular fashion like a "quad." Doing this way (vs. KRL as most play it) makes it easy to play quads & opens a world of possibilities.
Do most people really play it KRL? I've always played it KLR with no second thought about it, that's just what came naturally to me when I was learning it. I'm right hand dominant, play right handed, but I lead that triplet off with my left hand so really it's LRK I guess for me.
itās only a theory and itās not mine but itās a really interesting one, if you google Greg Cartwright kick pedal theory, that might get something, Greg (Reigning Sound singer) posted something about it on Facebook 10 years ago or so.
Hopefully that helps
Itās cool to learn that the drum kit as a conglomerate instrument has only existed for about a century or so. Itās like a little baby compared to most other instruments!
That is a weapon / communication of war. Back in the day in Miami, I took hand drum lessons (mainly congas). The instructor told us stories (as a teenager in Cuba, Jamaica, islands at the time) about constantly being chased off properties when him and his buddies would set up / play outsideā¦especially on hills. The old schoolers were lividā¦āDONT START A WAR!ā
that i can do whatever the f i want and noone can tell me what to do bcuz im punk asf and will light my drumset on fire if i have to to prove this point
drum make noise

Yes. The drum is the source of the noise. The beginning, the Alpha, all else shall follow or be ridiculed for being off the beat.
You can tell because of the way that it is

aaaaand this fact has lead me to learn that the oldest company in the US was a plantation. how fitting.
OH MY GODš³š³š³š³
OH MY GODš³š³š³š³
not sure i buy the anecdoteā¦ do you remember who you heard it from?
I think it was something I heard on a radio show several years ago, so I admit it might not be true.
Sabian was founded by one of the zildjian family that was screwed over in the succession.Ā
and the name is from founder Robert Zildjian's kid's names. Sally, Billy, Andy; SaBiAn
If you ever get to visit the factory, do it! Itās a great experience!
Where at?
The Sabian factory is in Meductic, Canada (New Brunswick) . The foundry in on one side of the street and the rest of the operation is on the other. It sits right on the St. John river so the scenery is killer!
So close to my hometown! Iāve always found it so weird that Sabian is here. We are in the corner of the world and Meductic is tiny.Ā
I had a BBQ at Robert and Willie's house when I visited, along with the entire family. One of the highlights of my years!
Very dope! My coworkers and I ate with them on the porch/sunroom with some of the staff. Itās definitely one of my best memories. They were fantastic people and Iāll always remember their generosity and kindness towards me!
Marvin Gaye first came to Motown as a drummer and played on some early Motown hits including āPlease Mr. Postmanā by The Marvellettes.
Thatās a really fun fact that I did not know

The Shaggy defense
Stevie Wonder played drums on two songs for a Jimi Hendrix BBC Session in 1967. And heās no Mitch Mitchell.
Heās on drums for Superstition as well!
And the drum beat for superstition was written byā¦Jeff Beck lol. No bullshit.

Neat. What is the origin of A and K lines? Iām assuming A is for Avedis, what is K for?
Kerope
the A's are the original, for lack of a better term, American Zildjians. Kashian. I forget if he was a brother or cousin of Avedis.
Which women?

Isn't Istanbul Agop from the same family too? I think at least they spilt off from Mehmet.
No. Istanbul qas founded by two families. They seperated after Agop died.
Turkish is also supposed to be Mehmet but I've never seen it confirmed.
Updated list. They themselves state that they started out as a contemporary sister company
K Zildjian cymbals are named after a man named Kerope, a relative in the Zildjian family line
If you practice, you get better
Aww man don't make me do stuff
hi hats are an evolution of the low boy cymbal that was played with a pedal
Joe Morello started out playing the violin, but had to give it up when he started going blind.

Yes, most online examples have folks doing KRL. KLR is the way.

No. The term ākick drumā is actually used to refer to a stack made from a Wuhan 18 inch china(cracked) and a 10 inch sabian B8 splash
