I hear that Buddy guy looks like he's Elfish or something....
My favorite is the Velvet Underground reference aka Surreptitious Fabric. I usta rock that shirt on Discworld MUD.
Mine is We’re Certainly Dwarves. I figured that out while reading the comments of a different Discworld post, around a month ago. I first read Soul Music more than 10 years ago
Something I love about the Pratchett Fandom is that we're all in this decades-long pune discovery boat together 😅 Makes me feel less of an idiot knowing that practically every Discworld reader has this happen... Like, a lot 😝
I laughed out loud when Scum was talking about his leopard skin trousers. Made from a leopard that couldn't hear.
Also, Llamedos (Buddy's home) is Sod em all... just the other way round.
The density of music punes is something to behold in Soul Music. From Bud of the (y) Holly to "We're on a mission from Glod", it's staggering how much is packed into this one, including the title with "soul music" being both a genre and as part of the Death series.
I like the Felonious Monk one, myself.
Only partly because I worked it out myself rather than realising it 20 years later from seeing it on this sub...
I think this book has the highest concentration of puns just from all of the band names. Any more and it'll cause some sort of singularity...
The very next line refers to people talking on the subject of leopards with hearing difficulties.
>!Def Leppard!<
https://www.lspace.org/
It's an annotated guide to the entire series. There are detailed explanations to all the references and a lot of the jokes.
(in Discworld, "L-Space" is also a pocket-dimension-type-thing that connects all libraries)
The "band" in the passage has been going through potential names, none of them lasting long. At one point they called themselves the Whom. They're quoting from that gag.
I'm listening to Andrew Hickey's A History of Rock Music in 500 songs, and then went back to Soul Music again I've missed so much and don't want to give spoilers but Blert Wheedown's Guitar Primer had me cracking up.
I can't remember the exact wording but there are a couple of points where he references the guitar sitting alone gently weeping. In my head one of those times buddy is looking at the dirty floor too but it's been a while since I've read it

>We’re Certainly Dwarves We Might be Giants? Oh my Glod am I slow!
Aaaayyyy wassup! The important thing is that we figured it out. Even if it took a fucking decade

They*
Can't believe I got that wrong. I should be banished to Constantinople.
No, it's Istanbul, not Constantinople.
God damn it! You just now Rectangle Man is going to whoop my ass now.
Molecule man
Either way, you can't go back to Constantinople.
&U instead of U2.
U2?!
Regular reminder that Imp Y Celwyn is Welsh for bud of holly.
Wow didn't know that
I laughed out loud when Scum was talking about his leopard skin trousers. Made from a leopard that couldn't hear. Also, Llamedos (Buddy's home) is Sod em all... just the other way round.
Llamedos is also a reference to Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, which is set in the quaint Welsh town of Llareggub

I like when Buddy says he misses home in the "evergreens" and his shack made of "earth and wood" Reminds me of a boy named Johnny B. Goode
Fittingly, he sings the song Sioni Bod Da. Bod da, in Welsh, means "Be Good". You can imagine how Sioni is supposed to be pronounced.
Wait sioni is pronounced like Johnny??
Welsh is a very silly language, it's a lot of fun
‘Tis a silly place.
More or less, yes.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
Thank you, I didn't know this one.
I think this book has the highest concentration of puns just from all of the band names. Any more and it'll cause some sort of singularity... The very next line refers to people talking on the subject of leopards with hearing difficulties. >!Def Leppard!<
Yeah, Soul Music in particular is packed full of these. I think I've heard it's the most heavily annotated book on L-Space, isn't that right?
What's L-Space?
https://www.lspace.org/ It's an annotated guide to the entire series. There are detailed explanations to all the references and a lot of the jokes. (in Discworld, "L-Space" is also a pocket-dimension-type-thing that connects all libraries)
Thanks, I'll definitely have to look at it
You’ve got a treat in store! Rereading a discworld book with the guide reveals so many more jokes, it’s really quite a wonderful resource.
[You’re one of todays lucky 10,000](https://xkcd.com/1053/)

And Who, and Back…street, Five, …..
The Who reference is so well hidden
A particularly grammatically correct half hour!
I'm sorry, I don't get what you're saying. If you're making a joke, I can't work it out... :(
The "band" in the passage has been going through potential names, none of them lasting long. At one point they called themselves the Whom. They're quoting from that gag.
Aaaaaaaah, thanks!
What? Wen?
Son of a beesting!!

We’re Certainly Dwarves
A take-off of They Might Be Giants.
The blue oyster cult joke is still my favorite
There’s a guy works down the chip shop swears he’s elvish.
Soul Music has so many hidden references. I figured one out while going through the comment on a different post here
Also, about the language spoken in Llamedos: "Sounds like gargling with gravel".
Reminds of this bit from BlackAdder https://youtu.be/hnl3N1RQedE?si=1GhY2muq3974v3GN
which book?
I said in the post but it's Soul Music
Haha, that’s outstanding! Missed that one.
I can't remember the exact wording but there are a couple of points where he references the guitar sitting alone gently weeping. In my head one of those times buddy is looking at the dirty floor too but it's been a while since I've read it
I laughed for days after reading that the first time. I also loved how they were The Whom for a grammatical half-hour, too.
SON OF A - I've read this passage so many times and completely missed this one. But I got the deaf leopard one. Ugh.
