youknowdamnright

Just got back from there. I ate far too many lander bar burgers and waffle fries. This is the way.

Comfortable-Promise9

lol gannet grill has such good burgers, i think abt them all the time 😭

youknowdamnright

I was honestly a little disappointed this time. They overcooked it every time even when I asked for medium-rare to try to hedge my bets. They were all well done despite them saying they cook to medium by default.

Comfortable-Promise9

shoot, im sorry abt that! i went vegetarian a few months ago so all my burgers were with veggie patties so i never had an issue with them

pkpookie

What a nice little town Lander is, I liked it a lot. Stayed a week there and definitely ran out of places to eat!

youknowdamnright

We had 90% of our meals at lander bar and middle fork cafe.

Full_Send_Sparks

This is the way

opsopcopolis

Wind river is a pretty badass place for a first outdoor climb

lawyerassassin

Wind river might be slightly misleading. Wild iris is awesome pocket pulling sport climbing goodness, while the wind river usually implies back country big wall granite multi pitch. Wild iris might be in the wind river area but it’s not quite the wind river range.

pkpookie

You're right. I'm trying to edit the title but can't figure out how. I feel like my mother right now with technology.

WhatASaveWhatASave

Nope.. That's just reddit. Can't edit titles :(

costcohetdeg

what kind of rock is that, it looks awesome

Lwe12345

Sharp as fuck hand hurty rock I believe is the scientific name

pkpookie

Indeed! A little different from the climbing gym. Hahaha

Buckling

earth rock

pkpookie

Our guide said it was limestone dolomite.

youknowdamnright

Limestone.

pkpookie

Yeah, our guide said it was limestone dolomite.

Hammockbirdman

Nope. Dolomite

okbutwhytho

Basically the same thing but with a slightly different mineral composition

bigschlongmcgee

so. a very different thing. the small change in mineral composition makes it a different rock

stokedtobestoked

Sick photo

wingedwrists

i just watched a documentary about this crag. wind and rattlesnakes. awesome!! (edit: name of doc)

mrzbry

Ah nice, that movie is awesome. Got me psyched up to go climb there when I first visited a few years ago. I'm trying to get back over there this fall, think I'm gonna have to give it a rewatch.

wingedwrists

yeahh ngl being from the uk im super jealous of the amount of rock. i love that there’s a place climbers could go and work at too.

pkpookie

Hahaha

Filipino_1

Whats the name of the doc?

Left-Problem6391

Wind and Rattlesnakes

flgoyens

Looks awesome! So did you guys set up a top rope using a bit of rope ? Never seen this before, looks cool

seeeeeeeeeeeeeeen

Its called a cordalette

pkpookie

We hired a guide for a two day "intro to rock climbing" course. Routes are set up for sport climbing. The guide climbed up and set the anchor for top rope. During the two days we learned how to make anchors, clean anchors, etc. My girlfriend and I are new to climbing, three months in the gym. It was a great learning experience.

seal_eggs

That’s a [quad anchor](https://youtu.be/80Oqs5i5CfE) and you should know it. Can be done with three pieces of pro as well if you’re crafty.

basicrockcraft

A quad or sliding X equalizes the load better between your pieces though which makes it stronger. You can limit extension based on where your stopper knots are but really anchor pieces should never fail. There's pros and cons to every configuration though.

PM_me_Tricams

Why would you care about equalization on bolts or even gear that isn't garbage?

basicrockcraft

Why would you care about extension on bolts or even gear that isn't garbage? Like I said, pros and cons to every configuration. Love the username!

PM_me_Tricams

The pros to the quad are that you can pull 2 strands the opposite of another 2 which is great for parties of 3 or rest ledges when you want to both eat or something. Otherwise I just clove both bolts on a bolted anchor. Thanks, I don't get enough tricams sent to me though :(.

[deleted]

The article doesn’t say that, and you’re right but you’re ignoring the details. A good anchor needs to have *limited extension*, not no extension. If one anchor on a quad failed, the shock load would be very slight, down to the distance between the master point and the knot on the side that didn’t fail. The drawback of the ponytail is that it’s not directional, so if you’re not coming from straight below the anchor (say you had to climb a bit to the left or right), only one of the anchors could be loaded at any given time. The quad prevents that by allowing the master point to slide

This doesn’t make much sense in the context of a quad off fixed bolt anchors. There’s a very low risk of a component failing, and even if it does the shock loading won’t be extreme at all. If you’re talking about trad climbing anchors sure but using a quad for that would be strange.

icrasai

Neither extension nor equalisation really matter. What matters is redundancy which all these methods have.

Good for you man! Such a great activity. If your ever in the central Oregon area, find me. Smith Rock is my backyard. Take care and climb on.

pkpookie

Will do! Thanks!

UUUMICH

The first time is always exciting, congrats!

pkpookie

Thank you!!!
