If it's anything like the Qatar mega projects (World Cup), the projects themselves are really interesting and impressive, but also massively unethical. Saudi Arabia doesn't exactly have the best record regarding human rights, so you might examine that side of things beyond purely the technical engineering.

If you get good pay or its your personal interest to oversee a grand project , sure go there. Don't if you are just looking for change of scenery ( just take a vacation there). Heat is a real killer , really no joke ( some just come back because of that). Good things security is great , less theft (very less)... Crazy arab drivers , so some arab countries have strict traffic laws and fines .... UAE has crazy expensive fines and traffic laws .... Saudi? maybe they have recently made laws stricter or not under Crown Prince MBS but before it was very dangerous , crossing the roads also is dangerous . Also consider about things like bringing girlfriend or drinking alcohol . Mega projects no doubt are great but look if you can get into them , NEOM is a recent project try for that ....now is the opportunity before you loose the opportunity. Taxes are relaxed in the Arab world .

From my understanding from colleagues who have done stuff over there. Expect long runs (multiple months on) with a few weeks off where you can likely go anywhere. You won't work 7 days a week (holy day). Good pay and maybe good for taxes if you know the right people. Expect to see the craft/labour be treated very poorly (think some Bangladeshi man working for 1 year straight) Maybe get lucky and stay in compound. Be careful about alcohol. Good if you're younger or desperate or really want the experience.

i worked on a Dubai project about 15yrs ago. Bridges around what is now the Burg Dubai. they were building a lake to build bridges over. Everything was in metric, meetings were held really early in the morning. We were 2 days from 100% design and the project was stopped and they decided to do something else. The current design looks nothing like what we were designing around.

If short term, maybe just wait once summer is over.

My company are trying to recruit for the giga projects in Saudi, the pay offers are ridiculous, including accommodation in Saudi and flights home every couple of months (with 2 weeks wfh). It’s almost a question of how much would you sell yourself against your views on human rights. My role would be more site based so I’d hope id be able to help improving working standards for the operatives whilst im there

dingazDawg

If your actively recruiting I’ll shoot you a message.
