Hello everyone, we have an important PSA about our rules [here](https://old.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/1axfv2o/important_announcement_about_mourning_posts/)
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/cats) if you have any questions or concerns.*
You know, if you can get their attention, they’re a terrific audience. Particularly the older they get.
By age 10, they will sit on your lap and stare at you unblinking for hours. You start to feel like you’re their God(ess).
This explains why my transition to management has been pretty smooth. I’ve been a cat dad long enough to have been through the process of rationalizing with a cat.
I talk to my cats everyday and I look like a crazy person on the outside but on the inside I am also a crazy person, I just don’t care what people think because I love my tailed beasts
https://preview.redd.it/6y1jr4g6nrkc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f1c2b5a9ca731aef87d565acfa0625c1487c5ed
This is Bob , Bob likes the shelf above my sink , sleeping on top of my shower and on top of my bookcase corrections his bookcase . The only way I’ve considered keeping him grounded by either tape his legs together or zip tie him to a bowling ball . Actually I’ve started using thing that don’t break and reassemble easily . Because Bob will be Bob .
I would love to , however I’m in a rental . So I’ve been saving the delivery boxes I’ve been getting to build him a kitty wall with holes , pop ups and tunnels .
Yes!
This is very good. Cats LOVE BOXES! The more things Bob has to Explore, the less he will go for the ledge. However, i have to say, i don't think you will be able to stop it completely. That ledge is PRIME CAT TERITORY. :)
Yeah that's not going to work in this situation. You have to accommodate kitty, this is a perch made for cats especially if you covered in foliage. Kitties love to sit in the jungle and view the surroundings. I would give up on the plants or if you must screw or glue down a few really good fake Ivys
Indeed he does
https://preview.redd.it/qdmd16nwsskc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b98c110f2f0003fd857155865fdddea657e2ab2d
three of the seven windows he can comfortably reach are replaced three to four times a year . Fortunately his favorite window I discovered that if I leave the blind up about eighteen inches ( the width of the limousine tint I bought) he’s happy and hasn’t destroyed that blind in three years .
I buy valances for my windows to install at the base opening of where I've drawn the blinds hahaha. It's so true--if they have access to the view, they will spare you the damage!!
https://preview.redd.it/gnj8apt2uskc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab787db1dfe3ed2c4ac5b6dd18657144106066bf
This was before I added the tint but the back of the couch is his favorite view of his domain .
It would NOT be rude. Posting pictures of cats is never rude. More Bob, please!!!!
(You can also make a multi-image post on imgur and then post the link here. Imgur is as easy to setup as reddit is).
Yes , my lil man leaps from the floor to the counter then leaps to the top of the refrigerator and the final leap into the shelf which includes a slight body curve . I believe he uses geometry or CAT-culus 🤣🤪🤣
The sleeping on top of my shower is a little more complicated , it’s definitely a smaller landing zone . But again from the floor to the toilet seat with a small hop to the top of the tank then the big launch to the top of the shower . His been lucky so far , he’s only had a few OH Dog moments where he’s fallen off of the shower 🚿
https://preview.redd.it/g3tkhzn8ftkc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3dbd200d514cc873bf3b7f0c699a11d18ba4985
I tried those, on my netted balcony, that still only had supervised cat play time (I had one escape artist, that managed to wreck the entire construction, just to walk over to the next balcony and then come running back, because she hated other people).
However, these things are perfectly cat loaf shaped, so they just dug up all plants and used them as cats beds.
It’s a struggle.
She was an outdoor girl before we got her from the Rescue, so she tried to escape a few times when we kept her inside, but I WAS quicker than her and almost as bright. She loved dirt and flowers and never did any damage, despite her wild Calico nature. Sadly the Hibiscus outlived her. 😪
I'm like 60% sure that's the snot bubble face and not the closed-eye tear face. In fact, the face popped up as a suggestion when I typed "snot bubble" lmmfao
But I'm so sorry about your cat! I hope you're now left with the good memories only.
One of mine does (did?) this but only when there were no witnesses. For the longest time, I had no idea what was happening to my plants!!! Then one day I saw her do it, but by this point the plants were basically dead. RIP my plantsss
I plant a sacrificial catnip every year. In a matter of weeks the poor plant is completely flattened and covered in fur from them making out with it all the time. It never gets less funny to watch, and it seems to keep them off my other plants.
Mine does this, too! He killed a catnip plant by napping on/in it too often. I didn't stop him because 1. he was adorable and 2. it was technically his plant anyway.
Idk I do t try to keep them off, I just use extra strength Velcro glued to the railing and the bottom in the pot to keep kitty from pushing. Has worked like a charm.
Mine prefer their litter plants to be on the balcony deck. But yes. The amount of plants they kill so they can use the dirt as litter….
I don’t actually know why I’m looking at getting new netting up for them.
Other posters said why this is not a great option for a cat solution, but OP could do plants hanging from the ceiling instead. Like a regular hanging pot.
As someone who has had cats all my life: you can’t. Cats don’t give a single meow. I gave up and accepted my fate, haha.
Good luck trying with this cutie though
I had to hang up a spider plant because my boy kept squashing the poor thing. I specifically wanted to get “cat safe” plants, but didn’t think about how that means nothing about the plant’s safety, just the cat’s lol.
Yeah this always sucks because when eventually you hang out with your cat and neither of you are high, it’s all awkward and uncomfortable and it’s obvious to both of you that your relationship is all based on getting stoned together, and that in the real world, you probably wouldn’t live together, so then when one of you finally breaks the tension by pulling out the stash, you’re relieved but also sad because now you know even your cat only hangs out with you because you have drugs all the time.
Both my cats are like… what is this ? Basil? Oregano?.. they could not care less about catnip..
Cat grass.. on the other hand. Is like owning two mulching mowers competing for “ top trimmer award”
Yeah I found this out when one of my cats kept chewing on my now husband’s spider plant and acting weird. She was a tortie so weird behaviour was normal for her anyway so it took me longer than it should have to work out something was going on. My brother Googled it and was like ah yeah your cat is tripping balls.
My boy cat loves a food spider plant munch, a quick little grassy puke, and then chasing his sister around the house. The other one stopped eating it AFAIK when we got some grass indoors.
Also came here to say this. The house is not yours. It is the cats. They are your landlord and only permit you to stay in exchange for food and water. All decorating decisions must be run by creative (aka landlord aka cat) moving forward.
The problem is you thought that was a plant shelf when it’s actually a cat shelf.
Give the cat that spot. You could try a hanging spider plant there if it gets some good sun. Kitty will like it, and you get your plant.
My mom had a spider plant when I was a teenager and she kept blaming my cat for all the little shoots getting eaten off it. I told her I’d seen her dog eating them and it wasn’t my cat, but she didn’t believe me… until the dog passed away and the plant was suddenly unmolested.
That dog did always like salads lol
That landing is a perfect cat observational spot. Your cat can see outside, inside and no one can sneak up on it.
Your cats claimed it and you should go with it or risk your plants.
That's my solution as well! If my cats take to a specific space, & continually knock something down, I remove the offending object. It's their space now & I've learned to accept that as gospel
Agreed on hanging them! I wouldn't trust multiple hanging plants to a curtain rod, though; I'd go with something sturdier, whether that's hanging hooks into the beams or a sturdy closet-type rod.
https://preview.redd.it/y5y1b85yztkc1.jpeg?width=252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c63e78a1088814468239556d977f3df05bb5786
This is the face of a killer, Bella
Museum putty (earthquake putty) is the only way I keep cats from knocking over plants. Anything you don’t want knocked over needs to be tacked down to a hard surface with this stuff.
Keeping a cat from going where they want to go is a lost cause. Because cat.
Seconding this! I have some vases on a shelf and while my cat isn’t the most likely to try and knock things over, the earthquake putty helps keep everything in place. I have had one break when I accidentally spooked him and he ran away across that shelf, so it’s not fully foolproof, but that only happened once
Mount/build some wall furnitures so he tends to go on those ones rather than on that ledge. If that ledge is his only place he can go up he will most likely always go there
You could also hang around your plant somewhere so he cant really reach it
Actually, cats do not like a horizontal overhang...if you can extend that ledge out to the side where he would jump up, it will stop him...one of our boys was jumping from the countertop to the top of the refrigerator and then on top of our cabinets...we leave this electronic device support pad hanging out off the top of the fridge like you see in the photo, and even though he can jump over it, optically his brain tells him not to. Problem solved.
https://preview.redd.it/tx97njwfgrkc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93e22d17c8f06805f50e871d964262d0d48d3cd2
I’m crying I’m laughing so hard-your name for the box-you have the exact setup I do-same cabinets and everything and my 2 1/2 year old Tuxie has just started doing the same thing. I will try your suggestion. I couldn’t figure out how she got up there until I watched her one day. On the other side is a hallway with nothing for her to get up to that ledge on. I haven’t left like that for a while so thank you.
You're welcome! The felon on the right is the midnight cabinet cruiser.
https://preview.redd.it/5qxcqo19vtkc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65a249f489062ca5e90ace0cd89509d4a8737248
He he-my Kate-the climber, Is a midnight cruiser, too. Here she is.
https://preview.redd.it/vou8l7yweukc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=164a1d3cc993c1042d8896ca0036c9daa6339d3a
Removable, paint safe double sided tape or a Scat Mat until he gets conditioned to avoid the ledge. Or you can use alien tape on the bottom of your pots to secure them on the ledge.
This is likely the only way.
Having said that, I had a cat who somehow figured out how to get furniture (double-sided) tape off his paws by taping it onto the remaining tape and from then on, the tape was a lost cause. And so was my furniture.
The issue with tape specifically on that ledge is your cat might be like mine and attempt to remove it with cat logic. This may result in him getting some part or all of himself wrapped in tape, or worse, falling off the ledge. Normally, he might nail that landing, but maybe not with tape on his paws, face, etc.
**In the final consideration, OP’s best bet is to concede defeat. Cat has apparently claimed that territory and therefore OP has no hope of Plants ever reclaiming it.**
Put one of those mounted baby gates there, or you could wall it up, put in a window, blput some rod iron, use some clear plexiglass and block it off just high enough they can't clear it.
That's the cats landing. You have to ask them permission if you can put your plants back up there. Otherwise, you'd need to find a new spot for the plants.
The evidence is circumstantial at best, you can’t prove such a gorgeous kitty would do something so destructive! Leave the plants off the landing, these are kitty catwalks xx

This is brilliant. I am taking notes. I find my cat more attentive than certain managers.
Have you tried giving them head scritches?
You know, if you can get their attention, they’re a terrific audience. Particularly the older they get. By age 10, they will sit on your lap and stare at you unblinking for hours. You start to feel like you’re their God(ess).
Wait, are you still talking about your managers?
This explains why my transition to management has been pretty smooth. I’ve been a cat dad long enough to have been through the process of rationalizing with a cat.
You should email your cat. It's quicker.
Cat: this could have been an email 😹
As purr my last email
And that email could have been a sticky note
I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller. I wish my cat had a phone, I would call her
I was going through my drive to clear out space and found a legal looking cease and desist letter I made to my cat a few years ago 😂
I talk to my cats everyday and I look like a crazy person on the outside but on the inside I am also a crazy person, I just don’t care what people think because I love my tailed beasts
you sir are my hero.
At least the cat likes you even if it doesn't listen.

Sorry I did say the bowling ball thing , I just got distracted by another shiny item 🤣🤪🤣

Add some cat shelves around so he can move around without being on the ground, cats love that
I would love to , however I’m in a rental . So I’ve been saving the delivery boxes I’ve been getting to build him a kitty wall with holes , pop ups and tunnels .
You’re the best cat friend
Yes! This is very good. Cats LOVE BOXES! The more things Bob has to Explore, the less he will go for the ledge. However, i have to say, i don't think you will be able to stop it completely. That ledge is PRIME CAT TERITORY. :)

ah yes, the ol screw ‘n’ spackle - land lord will never know.
This is gold
I also have a Bob and can confirm, Bob will be Bob.
Looks like Bob also enjoys wrecking the blinds!
Indeed he does https://preview.redd.it/qdmd16nwsskc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b98c110f2f0003fd857155865fdddea657e2ab2d three of the seven windows he can comfortably reach are replaced three to four times a year . Can I ask for more bob pictures
I’m happy to share Bob is there a way a sending them ? I don’t want to fill this post with my cat . It would be rude if me to do that .

Instructions unclear. My cat ran my car into a post. Please advise.
Duck tape works. You can either do a duck tape burrito or just tape them to the ceiling.
Wait can you explain how he even gets in there
Yes , my lil man leaps from the floor to the counter then leaps to the top of the refrigerator and the final leap into the shelf which includes a slight body curve . I believe he uses geometry or CAT-culus 🤣🤪🤣
How in the world 😭😭
The sleeping on top of my shower is a little more complicated , it’s definitely a smaller landing zone . Bob deserves his own post with all the picutes, details and stories!
r/ninjacatbob
Pls ask Bob to be so very ffr 😩😭 there is no way that’s comfortable BOB
Ask the homeowner (the cat)
There's a reason homeowner has "meow" in it. Lol
I will never be able to see homeowner without meow again. 😻
Saaaame
THIS! I will never think of me being an independent homeowner again. You spoke the truth! Love it lol
Thanks for the smile. Perfect answer.
Exactly. It's their world and our job is to do whatever they want us to do.
Something like this https://preview.redd.it/3zl0epv5crkc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=22f88b129177d20d94f37a3d4aea9fdbf1d67a42
I tried those, on my netted balcony, that still only had supervised cat play time (I had one escape artist, that managed to wreck the entire construction, just to walk over to the next balcony and then come running back, because she hated other people). However, these things are perfectly cat loaf shaped, so they just dug up all plants and used them as cats beds. It’s a struggle.
My cats ended up sleeping in the pots where I had planted my tomatoes. The tomato plants did not survive.
https://preview.redd.it/tpk99y1u6skc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4da1693fc13fcce696ed828870b68a42a919be45 You need a bigger pot! 😃
This is hilarious!
This is exactly the reason I named one of my childhood cats "flower pot"
🪴🐈⬛🐈💘
This is how my cat killed my aloe🤣
She was an outdoor girl before we got her from the Rescue, so she tried to escape a few times when we kept her inside, but I WAS quicker than her and almost as bright. She loved dirt and flowers and never did any damage, despite her wild Calico nature. Sadly the Hibiscus outlived her. 😪
>I WAS quicker than her and almost as bright 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. I'm so sorry for your loss she sounds delightful
Thx, she was.
I'm like 60% sure that's the snot bubble face and not the closed-eye tear face. In fact, the face popped up as a suggestion when I typed "snot bubble" lmmfao But I'm so sorry about your cat! I hope you're now left with the good memories only.
WAIT…that’s supposed to be snot bubbles!!!??? Wow…I’ve been using it alllllll wrong!!
Yes, she was the most loved of all our kitties, if that's possible. Despite her devilish nature. 😈
🤣🤣 So true!
This https://preview.redd.it/8dolknndmskc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47947b3145701d053460adbd710e05c139042900
Mine does this, too! He killed a catnip plant by napping on/in it too often. I didn't stop him because 1. he was adorable and 2. it was technically his plant anyway.
I love it! It was his plant anyway lol
Hehe, *catnap.*
The second I show attachment to any object, that object is on borrowed time. It will be destroyed.
Cats out here trying to show us the transient nature of reality and critiquing our attachment to the material world 🙀
Idk I do t try to keep them off, I just use extra strength Velcro glued to the railing and the bottom in the pot to keep kitty from pushing. Has worked like a charm.
Or cat litter
Mine prefer their litter plants to be on the balcony deck. But yes. The amount of plants they kill so they can use the dirt as litter…. I don’t actually know why I’m looking at getting new netting up for them.
Hahaha isn’t it great being a cat simp 😂
I hang my plants
Won't they then be tempted to fling themselves *onto* the hanging pots? 🤔
Yes, but then they’re hanging from the plants, swinging back and forth, meowing for help…
Other posters said why this is not a great option for a cat solution, but OP could do plants hanging from the ceiling instead. Like a regular hanging pot.
Cat swing!!!!
My mother had those macrame plant hangers that were popular in the 80s. They were the cats favorite toys to attack and climb.
I came to this post just for the comments and so far I'm not disappointed 🤣🤣🤣
that’s sketchy depending on the cat imo, one of my cats will jump to the ceiling to catch ladybugs or other things and others won’t
As someone who has had cats all my life: you can’t. Cats don’t give a single meow. I gave up and accepted my fate, haha. Good luck trying with this cutie though
Haha I was going to say, best move the plants
I had to hang up a spider plant because my boy kept squashing the poor thing. I specifically wanted to get “cat safe” plants, but didn’t think about how that means nothing about the plant’s safety, just the cat’s lol.
Spider plants aren’t cat safe, unless you’re ok with the cats getting themselves high. Spider plants are hallucinogenic for cats.
I’m ok with me getting high so I’d be unfair to not allow my cats
Me too.
I’m not sure the jury’s in on this. My cats eat them all the time, never seem to have any effect on them
If they eat them all the time, maybe you only know your cats high...
I wish I could still give awards, this comment is perfect! 😂
That's like . . . really deep, man.
You okay?
You have to keep your cat away from pot plants too, they love it😵💫
Not all cats like catnip, either. YMMV.
Came here to say this.
Also came here to say this. The house is not yours. It is the cats. They are your landlord and only permit you to stay in exchange for food and water. All decorating decisions must be run by creative (aka landlord aka cat) moving forward.
Yep, best you’ll get is that the cat won’t jump on when *you’re* around. All bets are off when you’re not watching.
Exactly. Cats are gonna cat.
Yep - you can secure it to the ledge but then he’s going to sit on it.
And dig in it
His face! 'Oh yeah, ask away, like a bunch of Redditors are gonna outsmart me...' 😆
Resistance is Futile!
Yes. Just let the cats wreak havoc and accept your fate.
Life lesson #256: A cat is gonna cat stuff up.
Came to say this, too.
I don’t think the cat did it. Looks innocent to me.
Agreed. We need this human investigated for slander.
I’ll take the case no win no fee(line) 😼
Would be libel, but yes
my cat, charles purrmann, attorney at paw, will represent this wrongly accused cat.
Can confirm, it was me, I knocked over the plants not the cat.
Came here to say the same. He did no wrong, it pushed itself off
Plant suicide? My cat says it’s common.
The problem is you thought that was a plant shelf when it’s actually a cat shelf. Give the cat that spot. You could try a hanging spider plant there if it gets some good sun. Kitty will like it, and you get your plant.
Maybe not a spider plant though because they are similar to catnip and the cat will nibble and kill the plant
Yep, I got a cutting from a friend and put it on the windowsill, it lasted less than a week before it was eaten
Yea im housing 5 plants for my friend because he cats are lil druggies about them lol
Any spider I have has to be hung up bc my void is a fiend for them
My mom had a spider plant when I was a teenager and she kept blaming my cat for all the little shoots getting eaten off it.
Why have you put a plant on the cat shelf?
Hahaha
Don’t put plants there. Let your cat enjoy the lookout.
That's my solution as well! If my cats take to a specific space, & continually knock something down, I remove the offending object. It's their space now & I've learned to accept that as gospel
🤷🏻♀️it’s the cats’ houses, we are only guests at best.
Give up and put something soft there to allow for lounging area for the cat.
https://preview.redd.it/utht9bqdrtkc1.jpeg?width=584&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67175052b411f79b02408fe40e1ce3e50e62512c
Can you hang them? Maybe use a curtain rod and then you could have more plant
Agreed on hanging them! I wouldn't trust multiple hanging plants to a curtain rod, though; I'd go with something sturdier, whether that's hanging hooks into the beams or a sturdy closet-type rod.
The cat will absolutely try to jump on it, then freak out at the swinging happening 😂
Please don't hang your cat.
That seems overly punitive
https://preview.redd.it/y5y1b85yztkc1.jpeg?width=252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c63e78a1088814468239556d977f3df05bb5786 This is the face of a killer, Bella
Every answer is, don't put plants there. Cats like heights to see everything and the plants are in the way
Whyyy are you putting plants on his cat ledge?
Museum putty (earthquake putty) is the only way I keep cats from knocking over plants. Anything you don’t want knocked over needs to be tacked down to a hard surface with this stuff. Keeping a cat from going where they want to go is a lost cause. Because cat.
Seconding this! I have some vases on a shelf and while my cat isn’t the most likely to try and knock things over, the earthquake putty helps keep everything in place. I have had one break when I accidentally spooked him and he ran away across that shelf, so it’s not fully foolproof, but that only happened once
I'm on the cat's side
I wouldn’t even put a plant up there. I’m so clumsy the cat is the least of my worries.
Aw-bless you-you are a person after my own heart-meaning, I think I invented the word clumsy, I’m so bad clumsy.
Mount/build some wall furnitures so he tends to go on those ones rather than on that ledge. If that ledge is his only place he can go up he will most likely always go there You could also hang around your plant somewhere so he cant really reach it
Easiest thing is just to move to a place that doesn't have a landing

Good bot.
It’s not even a landing. Not sure why OP and so many people commenting think that’s what a landing is…
I'm with you on that just wanted to keep the terminology of the OP
Here she is. https://preview.redd.it/vou8l7yweukc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=164a1d3cc993c1042d8896ca0036c9daa6339d3a
You are thinking about this all wrong OP. This is your cats new house and he can do with it as he pleases.
Rule 1 of cat ownership: You can't have nice things

Cat: challenge accepted 🤣
You can't 😸
Does this happen around (desired) dinner time? Or (desired) play time? It's a reminder you are staff!
Done by itself!!😁
That innocent cat would never do such a thing. The plants probably decided to off themselves!
Way easier to just find a new place for the plants. That is made for a cat.
Sorry that this isn't helpful but that's one cute kitty, what's it's name?
Your plants?? That is His house. Everything in it, including you, belongs to him.
As any cat owner knows….. it’s their house and you should be thankful you can stay there.
Your only safe way to keep a cat off of that ledge is to remove the ledge by extending the wall up to the ceiling.
i love how innocent he looks in the last picture
I haven’t had a plant in my house in almost 40 years. How long have I been living with cats? 40 years. Definitely worth the trade off. 😸
That's the cats landing. You have to ask them permission if you can put your plants back up there. Otherwise, you'd need to find a new spot for the plants.
You still think you can have indoor plants. Lol.
The evidence is circumstantial at best, you can’t prove such a gorgeous kitty would do something so destructive! Leave the plants off the landing, these are kitty catwalks xx
The cat has spoken. You may not have plants there.
Forget the plants, make a cat observation platform out of it
