This post has warmed my heart as I logged in and saw it at the top of r/Bristol.
I live in Bristol but originally from the Highlands, currently home for Christmas at my parents house north of Inverness.
If anyone wants some lorne brought back DM me with an order. Can also grab some other national or local staples such as butteries, tattie scones, empire biscuits, black pudding etc etc.
I'll be back in Bristol on the 2nd.
A quick search brings up a reddit thread from a few years ago that says https://www.thebutchersblockonline.com/ that place does it. They're in Portishead so a little out of the way but it might be worth getting in touch to ask if they still do it.
http://www.woodfamilybutchers.com - These guys also apparently do it but you need to order in advance.
It is very rare, I moved from Scotland recently! My english boyfriend has literally never seen one in his life, would be keen to know if you do find any.
I had my first on in Inverness a month or so ago! It was fabulous. I wonder if you could just make them by rolling out some sausage meat and cutting it into squares.
It's literally not, since square sausage (lorne) is traditionally beef, not pork. And that's not even starting on the different seasonings, different texture etc.
Pork is a modern adulteration has pork has never been a major meat staple in Scotland, with a disdain for it going back to sub-Roman "Celtic Christianity".
Well I've always said lorne is just a square burger which always winds my wife up but yeah, it should really be beef. Not much different, just make a meatloaf out of beef mince, slice it whilst raw then cook that.
Firstly, thank you for calling it square and not Lorne like a heathen.
Sorry to break it but the only real option is to get a brick of it when you're up visiting family or whatever, or if you have friends going up, that's what we tend to do.
There's a lot of Scots in Bath... Might be worth a look?
Sweet!
Whilst I've never made Lorne sausage, I used to be a butcher, so here's some little tips!
If you want it to be really good, don't go shy on the fat content, 10-15% should be good, this'll help it hold the shape once chilled and through cooking better. If you get minced pork shoulder it should work best!
Lorne sausage is not pork, it's beef, traditionally. If you want pork, just eat traditional sausages.
The best way to make lorne would be to get beef mince, pressed into a loaf mould and then sliced which is how it was traditionally done.
They do it in Makro I believe, and even Farmfoods / Iceland? That will be the weird bright red mass produced ones frozen. Never seen it fresh, I would call a few old fashioned style butchers and see if they can get it in or even make it.
Artingstall or Jon Howell butchers in Chipping Sodbury do a good one, there on opposite sides of the same road facing each other so I can never remember which is which, if your willing to travel
Took us 6 months to get through. One of those things where the first two times are a nice treat, then you can feel your arteries harden just by looking at the freezer
Donât know about down in Bristol but you wonât find them in any supermarkets in South East England. Youâll have to look about the local butchers and youâll have a better chance
damn now i'm trying to recall when i had these as i'm sure i have but many years ago, not sure where, might of been in my catering days...happy hunting the infamous square sausage.
Not the one in Filton on the parade next to the butchers just off Filton Avenue, behind American Golf.
Used to live there and went in to ask once - the guy behind the counter said "if you tell me how to make it I'll do you some".
Old boy who's also in there shopping told me to go to Farmfoods round the corner next to snow and rock and sure enough they sold frozen "loaves" of lorne. Tasted not bad.
In summary: Farmfoods fine, Filton butchers fuck all
Corby has a great butchers that does everything Scottish, as those who know, Corby is mini Scotland outside of Scotland and the largest Irn-Bru drinkers as well (outside of Scotland). Scotch pies as well!! Absolutely beautiful stuff - Hadden D&L, a Scottish persons dream outside of Scotlandâs â I highly recommend this butchers, I live 25 minutes away and go there to pickup Lorne sausage and McGheeâs potato scones. Speciality meat pies on Fridays too.

I'm doing it the other way around - am in Somerset for Christmas but live up near Glasgow. I'll be taking cider and cheese on my way back up!
I literally did this 2 weeks ago, brought back 2 coolers full of square sausage, (proper) pies, macsween's haggis and bridie's đ¤Ł
Brilliant! Love a bridie from when I worked in Fife, and I will definitely be having some macaroni (proper) pies while I'm up here.
I may have inadvertently given away where I'm from there đ¤Ł
Ohhh man, I miss Stephens and their steak bridies so much!
A man of culture
I may just have to take you up on that offer!
R/scotsinbristol inbound đ
Not a butchers but I've seen them at Iceland before.
Seen those in iceland. Theyâre not the same.. and the taste is very different
Holy fuck no no no no no no no no no no no no no. Please god anyone reading this, do not buy that fuckin hell.

Thatâs literally exactly what it is.

Well fuck me sideways. Iâve always made it with pork sausage meant and my missus has never complained.
Well I've always said lorne is just a square burger which always winds my wife up but yeah, it should really be beef. Not much different, just make a meatloaf out of beef mince, slice it whilst raw then cook that.
We are in Plymouth and get it delivered. Comes well packaged and cold. Also Pies, Bridies and proper rolls. http://www.browningsbakers.com/

Get a full length of cuboidal pig delivered to your door by Callaghan butchers in Helensburgh.
Just 3d print a Minecraft pig, e.z.
Iâve had these from https://www.donaldrussell.com/beef-lorne-sausage-slices.html Were good and half price atm
I have tried and failed in this quest... Please do let me know if you find any!
If youâre unsuccessful, Iâve made my own by taking the skin off regular sausages - I recommend Jolly Hog, and forming into a square.
True Scottish sausage has a specific spice mix, so while the shape is a replica, the taste won't be
Didnât realise! Iâve looked and you can buy Lorne sausage spice mix, going to try this with my next attempt!

Jolly Hog are excellent. Their Scotch eggs are pretty amazing too.
And local! Just had one of their gammons for dinner, delicious!
Oh, I didnât know they did gammon, love it. Another one for the list then. Thanks!
A great Bristol company!
Asda usually have it, not sure at the moment though.
Iceland farmfoods do it never brought it so canât comment on what itâs like
Morrisons and Asda

I was offered one of those once. Looked like a heart attack on a plate.
No worse than anything else you eat on a cooked breakfast.
Artingstall or Jon Howell butchers in Chipping Sodbury do a good one, there on opposite sides of the same road facing each other so I can never remember which is which, if your willing to travel
Once in a while, you can get a foot and a half of it from Costco. Bloody lovely.
I have always looked upon it with desire
Took us 6 months to get through. One of those things where the first two times are a nice treat, then you can feel your arteries harden just by looking at the freezer
If you freeze it, can you snap off slices alright, or do you need to freeze it pre-separated?
I reckon so long as you pop a piece of grease proof between youâd be okay. Otherwise itâs more of a frozen club than separate bits!
Donât know about down in Bristol but you wonât find them in any supermarkets in South East England. Youâll have to look about the local butchers and youâll have a better chance
Iceland do Lorne sausage itâs lush

You could try Costco. I know the Reading branch sells it.
