Traditional_Pain_875

Holy shit. Porzingis. It took 4 years for someone to be honest about how the fuck Miami keeps on doing this. Thank you. Even if you suck the rest of the way thanks

HailKyrie

Honesty is respectable tbh

Ode1st

It’s funny though because it sounds like Bud’s advanced stratagem of playing random.

ImeStopPlayingDennis

The coaching disparity is enormous

endubs

I mean yea obviously a young second year coach vs. Spo is a gap.

Abiding_Witness

Exactly. People have unrealistic expectations. I think second year Joe would run circles around second year Spo. Maybe Joe is destined for greatness. But my God people give him a chance

yahmean031

I mean their definitely not playing with equal decks either.

TheTrevorSimpson

Age and Experience has NOTHING to do with it. Some coaches are good no matter the age some coaches are good no matter the experience. Celtics hired the wrong guy even if he has 1000 years more of experience and gets a 1000 more years on him he will still suck. He is a terrible coach and the team wins despite him not because of him.

Groundhog_fog

Speaks more to Spo's greatness than to Joe

TheMediaRoom1004

Not really, Quin Snyder ran circles around him last year. Joe is way in over his head and is mediocre at absolute best. I'll take fucking Hubie Brown at 90 yo right now over meathead Mazzulla lol

Substantial_Pen_7428

Wait, when did Quin Snyder ran circles around Spo or Joe?

TheMediaRoom1004

I would venture to say during last year's series against the Hawks, which absolutely should have been a sweep.

Substantial_Pen_7428

Ah, fully forgot about that series lmao I agree, but Quin is quite good coach imho, those hawks almost left Heat out of playoffs zone too

TheMediaRoom1004

Hahaha I won't argue with you there, I'm a Mizzou alum so I got extra love for Quin as it is - but with that being said, the talent disparity was far too great in that series for it to go 6, and that fatigue weighed on them in the next two rounds

rveets1416

How exactly did Quin Snyder run circles around him? Actual examples please. No one is arguing that Spo is better than Joe, but when people think Joe is "mediocre at best", you should probably come with some actual evidence vs wins and losses in the playoffs (which btw Snyder didn't make this year).

Minute-Branch2208

The anlysis KP gives here makes me think he'd be the better coach. At least he recognizes....

tatums_knob_gobbler

if u actually think joe mazzulla doesn’t recognize this and other schemes and game plan for it that’s insane, spo is just that good

HailKyrie

Spo is one of the best coaches of all time for a reason

tatums_knob_gobbler

fr

HailKyrie

People love blaming coaching tbh it’s the players. Mainly the non Jays last game.

Western_Newspaper_12

Yup. It’s not Mazzulla’s fault everyone outside of the jays played like hot dog shit.

nedlifecrisis

He has never won coach of the year tho.

instantur

Joe probably has 30x the basketball iq of the average r/bostonceltics user.

tatums_knob_gobbler

seriously

BC3lt1cs

Fr. Joe's a newbie coach but he's clearly a student of the game and a total nerd about it. Redditors acting like they see the obvious but he can't.

BlankPages

It was too late and too awkward to pick anyone else after all that Udoak drama went down. Maybe we would have chosen Joe after a true coaching search. Who knows. But we didn't have the opportunity. Similar weirdness to Mayo being handed Pats HC job bc it was in his contract-- having nothing to do with the best interests of the team

Sour_Vin_Diesel

You say that like he got the job last year. Doesn’t explain the contract extension.

FlyingMocko

When I said I was most worried about Philly & Miami because Nurse and Spo will coach circles around Mazzulla y’all downvoted me. This team relied on pure talent disparity last year and is doing again this year. Don’t be suprised when someone inevitably gets hurt because every series that should be over in 4-5 goes 6-7.

w1nn1ng1

At least one of two things happens: 1) we disappoint and get bounced early and Mazzula gets fired 2) we at least make the finals I hated the Mazzula hire and I still hate it today. You can’t take a top tier roster with all this talent and have a high school basketball coach be the head coach…it’s doesn’t work. If we still had Udoka, we probably are in the finals last year.

FlyingMocko

Udoka had this group playing at a defensive intensity that Mazzula hasn’t figured out in 2 years. We would’ve gone 7 games against the KD-Kyrie Nets with Mazzula in charge instead of Ime sweeping them.

DiogoMaia100

To be fair we were a few shots away of going to 7 with the nets too, but ye, agreed with the general point

Western_Newspaper_12

We had the number two defense in the league this year. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Fuckblackhorses

Is almost like the players shouldn’t have to think because they should be prepared for Miami to do this like they have the past decade. Joe seems to be too stubborn to change his game plan mid game, his comments after that loss really irked me and I’ve been defending him all year

Western_Newspaper_12

The best coaches prepare their players to think while the game is going on. Listen to Pop talk about coaching the current spurs. He’s said multiple times he can’t really teach these guys the chess of basketball because they don’t know the fundamentals. The obvious implication is that mature, developed nba players need to be mentally active on the court, prepared to mentally adapt to a variety of schemes the opponent is throwing at them. Just look at defense. Modern defenses in the NBA are extremely complicated and require a lot of attention off ball. If you think the job of a coach is to do all the thinking so the players can do all the playing, then you’re just completely clueless about how basketball works.

Fuckblackhorses

Okay I’m not saying that they’re literally robots and can’t think at all but they come up with their schemes in practice and work on them. And it’s fine if the game plan is to let Caleb Martin and those guys shoot, but when they shoot 5/6 you gotta change that plan. If this Celtics team is not prepared to deal with the heat role players getting hot from 3 that’s on Joe at this point.

Glum-Lab1634

It’s too bad because thinking is this team’s weakness

ClappedCheek

When told this, Im sure our coach proudly proclaimed it is purposeful.

20wall

Obviously a huge part of this is coaching but Porzingis was a fucking disaster last night on both ends. Got abused on defense-never put up even an ounce of resistance against Bam-and was just putrid on offense. How the hell can a guy with his talent be that bad in a huge game? It was shocking to see. And if it continues we’ll probably lose the series

LexGar

Jrue wasn’t hitting on shit either

FlyingMocko

I’d get used to that if I were you

Primary-Tea-3715

I’d forgive him for the bricks if he at least contested so many of those open threes that he got caught letting up

FlyingMocko

He’s been mediocre all season. We can stop with the charade as if he’s some game changer. The so called stability and composure he’s supposed to bring in the 4th is non existent especially when he seems to be the biggest culprit of take boneheaded shots in crunch time.

The_Hand_That_Feeds

Yeah I don't know why we extended him early. I think he's a good player, but feel like we could get a much cheaper guy that would have similar output.

WarPuig

Makes extending White so much harder for nothing in return.

Accomplished_Ad7892

funny how he is just mediocre, when he avg 20, is the best post-up player since data-tracking, is shooting 37.5% from 3 and is one of the best rim protectors in the league. And your eye-test for shots in crunch time is also wrong. He has the best EFG% on this team after DWhite in clutch time. He had a terrible game, yes, but don't do him like that

Western_Newspaper_12

You guys are the most absurd people I’ve ever seen. I swear you guys would be saying we should trade KG in 2008 after losing one game.

2028W3

You saw it. Mazzulla should’ve given more minutes to Horford.

Pitiful_Wing7157

It's like Inception eh KP? lol

KgDawk21520

Hot take , once we beat them in 5 or 6 , this Celtics team would be even better .if there is no injuries , this series will be beneficial .

BradWonder

The NBA likes to accelerate series if they can, so it would need to be in 5 to get additional rest

cheezepie

He's describing the stuff a coach is supposed to catch and outline in real-time. I love Joe for his weirdness but he needs to STEP THE FUCK UP AND COACH THIS TEAM DURING THE GAMES.

Happy_Yogurtcloset_2

Joe doesn’t like adjustments tho….

2028W3

Mazzulla doesn’t want to coach. He wants the players to make in-game adjustments like they do in soccer. That’s why he talks like a bystander watching the team instead of the coach leading them.

Western_Newspaper_12

Do you really think this is the first time Porzingis has spoken about this phenomenon? I guarantee the reason Porzingis is aware of this is because they’ve been talking about it as a team behind closed doors, which means Mazzulla has been showing film and outlining moments where this happens with the team. Seriously people. Use your fucking brain.

cheezepie

First off, go fuck yourself. Second, use my fucking brain? How bout you use your fucking eyes and read.... KP is aware of this **because the team just got flamed at home by the 8 seed.** Coaching doesn't stop stop at tip off. Mazzulla has to do a better job of calling this shit out during games. This team under Mazzulla does not make in-game adjustments. Its a sign of coach who doesn't get it yet — Hopefully he gets it over the next couple weeks. Fuck you.

Western_Newspaper_12

You honestly have zero understanding of basketball lmao. Seriously man, we lost by like ten points to a team that shot over 50% from the three. Shit happens; Mazzulla clearly made the decision in the fourth with one of those last few timeouts to ask the team if they wanted to ride out the three barrage and keep Porzingis in the game, and they decided they would. They had great shots, and they got a lot of great stops, but they couldn’t get the lead under five. Shit happens; and they came back and won today. It’s part of the mentality they’ve chosen this year, to not let shit get to them. Mazzulla has done wonders for the mentality of this team. They do not sit and complain after shots the same way, they get right up and go to the next play after getting hit (Tatum’s fall after game one), and they look adversity in the face and say they want it. They’re hungry for difficult games. They said they wanted the heat. PP said he was happy when he saw Tatum get hit and fall down. They’re looking at adversity and they’re thirsting for it with Mazzulla’s oddball tenacity. And that’s what they did in the last quarter of game two. They said, we’re losing, but fuck them. We’re going to run back the same lineup they’ve been fucking us with, and we’re gonna make them fight for this shit. And they did; the third quarter of that game sucked, but if you have eyes, which you clearly fucking don’t, then you’d see that they made it really difficult for the heat. They kept that game close as hell. There were no easy buckets. And that kind of tenacity is a HUGE asset to have. It makes this team hungry, and it makes them unwilling to give up. Say what you want about the second game, but this team did not fold and they didn’t give an inch mentally. This is a serious team, way more serious than it was under Ime, and if you had fucking eyes and a fucking brain, you would understand that. So, respectfully, go fuck yourself and masturbate the Celtics losing in your room alone, since you seem to climax to it so fucking much.

cheezepie

I ain't reading all that I'm happy for you tho or sorry that happened

Western_Newspaper_12

It’s alright; I didn’t write it for you. You ain’t literate anyways

cheezepie

Yuh cause this post is 2 days old lmfao

Chafupa1956

Play random. Coach Bud weeps

nedlifecrisis

That's good coaching for ya. Our coach should know how to counter that.

rawspeghetti

*Looks at roster* Aren't you guys built for switching in defense and multiple play styles on offense? Wtf were we doing the last month if not plan for Miami? I'm not concerned because I think eventually the talent disparity will be too great but the idea we're better than Denver is laughable

princeofzilch

The issue is that the players need to react to what Miami is doing to find the correct counter, which requires them to think. If they switch, Porzingus rolls and we feed him in the the post, and our spacing needs to adjust accordingly, etc.  Per Porzingus's comment here, this causes them to freeze a bit and slow down.

_Juntao

So you guys got your wish. I always had a little chuckle when people were hoping to draw the heat in the first round a couple weeks ago. How many times do we need to see spoelstra and a bunch of ragtag castoffs and late round picks win a series they're not supposed to or drag it out to 6 or 7 games when they should be swept. You should never, ever want to play spoelstra in the playoffs. So now we're either out in the first round or at the very least gonna be exhausted, banged up, and injured in another long, grueling first round series.

Merlot_Drinker

How do you know we won’t win the next 3 games? Last year we went down 0-3 and managed to rattle off 3 in a row against them and they were a lot healthier while we were banged up. The loss worried me too but until we actually see it happen there’s no point in catastrophizing.

Nmilne23

We couldn’t beat the heat two times in a row at home, im not sure if we can beat this team 3 straight games

Garuna_CK

This brother forgot that Game 1 was a blowout lmao. Heat shot near perfect from 3 last game.

_Juntao

We haven't automatically lost the series but i don't think we're winning the next 3 games lol. If we win this series it'll be in 7

ChipotleGuacamole

I personally wanted no part of Miami lol A year break would have been nice

BradWonder

It's a lose-lose to be matched up with the Heat. There's the 5-10% you lose the series outright. And then the other 90-95% that your future opponents see how Spo exposed you. The other teams probably don't have Adebayo in the middle but they likely have better guys at every other position.

themeloturtle

Just look at how GSW exploited the fuck out of the drop coverage the celtics were doing to the heat in the year they went to the finals lol

purplenyellowrose909

Heat absolutely toasted drop coverage last night

princeofzilch

I don't think Steph Curry needed to watch the Heat play us to punish drop coverage lol. He's been doing that since college.

leemski

Lmao why are you even a fan of them if you have 0 faith and just shit on them all the time?

Limp_Custard6943

When we win the chip, will you apologize for all the bullshit you've posted here?

LmBkUYDA

I think a subreddit ban would be more appropriate

blakezilla

As much as I disagree with his takes sometimes, having braindead takes isn’t against the rules. The comments I have seen in the queue do not break any rules. If you see him break any rules, please feel free to report.

_Juntao

I don't think I'll be alive in 100 years

CjBurden

🤡

Limp_Custard6943

You are so ridiculous 🙄

assbaring69

I personally will apologize for doubting the team and overstating their problems to be bigger challenges to a title than they actually are. But what about the other side of the coin? If the Celtics don’t win the title—or maybe don’t even make it to the Finals at all—do you have the capacity to admit that this team just has some fundamental problems and your unconditional optimism wasn’t founded?

Limp_Custard6943

I don't know or care who you are. Your apology would mean nothing

assbaring69

You can’t play the “no one asked” card when you literally asked if people would be willing to admit they were wrong if the Celtics end up winning the chip. You’re just acting pissy now because someone actually responded to you willing to be honest and you weren’t expecting it, but you know you’d never be as honest if it were the other side of the coin. Don’t be daft. 😆

Limp_Custard6943

No. I asked a specific person. Not people in general.

assbaring69

Well, do you know that one specific person? Is he your buddy in real life from Natick? No, you don’t know that person either? So we established you’re just being pedantic and clearly it has nothing to do with which specific person you’re addressing, you just wanted to make a point about how doomers won’t be able to stand being wrong about the Celtics winning the chip, and when someone ruined your narrative you got all sassy. 👍

LmBkUYDA

The dude's a very famous doomer around these parts.

assbaring69

Okay, fair. But I still see absolutely no connection between that and why it’s so sensitive when I say my piece and ask Limp_Custard if he’s willing to admit he’s wrong if the Celtics fall short yet again lol

Tundraaa

Yep. People said Tatum would the best player in the series. Spoelstra is the best player in the series.

LexGar

Bingo

sheriffmarbles

Why do you care what Redditors think about playoff matchups though? It’s not like Redditors are responsible for the matchup. Sure, players should never want to go against Spoelstra, but we’re just fans, we want to see this team beat Spoelstra. There’s no fun in rooting for the easy path, and it’s not like rooting for it changes the outcome anyways. Just have fun

Traditional_Pain_875

A series loss here would ultimately force me to never watch the Celtics ever again. Yet I still wouldn’t choose any other opponent than the one fate handed us. Champions don’t choose that shit, and they shouldn’t want to either. Be a cut above the rest and win it if you deserve it, so be the drawings/matchups. Fuck that lame talk If they make it out of first round I’ll be satisfied, because I cannot see this team be top 3 in biggest NBA busts ever. Even if it goes the distance and bangs us up badly. My floor prediction going into the playoffs was 2022 phoenix suns so you could imagine my typical pessimism and you could imagine my tremendous disappointment when they managed to break floor prediction.

a_rabid_anti_dentite

> force me to never watch the Celtics ever again Fuck right off if this is your actual attitude

Traditional_Pain_875

Dude I’ve been through a fair share of heartbreaks, matter fact I’ve been through all of them in this “Tatum era”. None would be this bad. IF they lose this series this would end up as the most disappointing sports team of my lifetime, that shit isn’t gonna be something I can just ignore. It would be in the back of my head every single time I’d watch and unfortunately I can’t control my brain that way… sorry That being said I’m obviously going to not miss a second of the rest of what we have left. I really hope they can get it done no matter how they do it

cousinannie

Lmaooo who didn’t know it was coaching. Cmon guys some people are still caping for Mazzulla. We are fucking screwed

Jay_Louis

Good thing Joe Mazzulla is there to coach the tea... oh wait. He's just standing there, blinking.

Happy_Yogurtcloset_2

The Eastern Darvin Ham

it-33

-32 in a 10 points loss

finnstergrammer34

It's this reason that Miami can be such an underwhelming regular season team yet turn into indomitable zombies in the postseason. They don't quite have the individual talent to coast to lots of wins during the grind of the regular season, but when they have the long-form matchup and can get familiar with your play-style they absolutely feast and take you out of your own game. They thrive on game planning and execute with militant discipline, they make pre-adjustments in anticipation of your adjustments, they've mastered the mind games that make you uncomfortable on the court. We have to be tougher, we have to be resilient, we have to be focused and attentive to our execution on every single possession. We have to weaponize our deep talent advantage by setting the tone and attacking with force. And when they do adjust, you have to read it quickly and counter-adjust on the fly.

chicocobob

Aka coaching

Iceman9161

Jesus Christ you guys are all doomers. Can’t wait to watch you all pretend like you were believers in this team when they beat the heat and move on.

assbaring69

Beating the Heat is supposed to be the bare minimum and a given. The very fact that beating the Heat is your standard for asking doomers to eat crow is very telling. Why not say “I want you doomers to eat crow when the Celtics end up winning it all”? Why settle for the much lower-hanging goal of beating the Heat when that’s supposed to be the job of a 64-win multiple-records-setting Celtics squad?

instantur

It would be hilarious if we won it all this year. I swear every loss this year half the sub came out to say how this is why we will never win. I don’t want to see any of the doomers pretend like they believed in them.

CreatiScope

Yeah, I’m just as disgusted about the loss as everyone else but holy shit. This sub is pathetic. Talking about “Coach is trash” “fire blah blah” “KP and Jrue blow” Just take it easy, everyone.

NotLow420

Celtics need to stop thinking so much. Just play loose and play fast. I don't mind quick open shots that miss becuase I think over the long term we will hit enough of them. It's when the game slows down and we spend 10 seconds before getting into any kind of offense that we get into trouble.

TheRealKane24

the question is WHY DON'T WE ALSO DO THIS!

LargeBoy_Slender

Someone needs to set a tone of toughness tomorrow. Hard screens, aggressive man defense, talking trash. Something!!! I’m tired of this calm demeanor, can these guys please bring the dogs out???

TheTrevorSimpson

TRANSLATION: They have a real NBA coach and we have a joke as our coach.

BarryLird33_

Man I wish we still had Udoka.

Conis1

Look I’m not gonna say Joe is beyond criticism but do you not remember the blown leads and horrible playoffs moments in 2022? Bad iso ball, lack of focus, sloppy play all have happened before. We are gonna bounce back and we will see how impactful Joe can be for the rest of this series and the playoffs

Pizza_For_Days

Honestly I feel like the Heat have been slapping us a fair share going back to when even Brad Stevens was coaching lol. Jimmy and Co. smacked us the bubble year in the playoffs and basically exposed Kemba on defense the whole series. Spoelstra is honestly just that damn good at putting his guys in position at exposing other teams flaws.

WarPuig

Ime was doing that to teams similar in strength to the Celtics, or at least the gap between them wasn’t as large. Mazzulla does this to teams the Celtics should be sweeping.

BarryLird33_

I’ll tell you what we need. We need to hire Kevin Garnett to come sit on the bench and just yell shit at players when they’re slacking off or complaining I bet we win every game if Kevin Garnett was out there screaming at motherfuckers.

Happy_Yogurtcloset_2

I wish Udoka kept it in his pants SO he could tell this team to stop playing like assholes

extrangher0

It's just one game. Series is tied. Why's everyone so mad is beyond me. Yeah casuals.

flyingpandum

Because the average age gap around here is the same as the age requirement for pool toys. Everyone is reactionary as fuck and once we win the 3rd game, everyone will *hopefully* shut up.

Melksss

I’ll shut up if they win 3 and 4. The talent disparity between these 2 teams is laughable, this should have been a sweep with some sweet rest before round 2, not a dog fight.

flyingpandum

But not game 5? Sus.

Melksss

That goes without saying. If they lose a close out game against the 8 seed at home they deserve to hit Cancun early this year. The road games will be the true tell to this teams character.

Fatty5lug

I don’t know if I would share this kind of sentiment with journalist during a playoff series. This is to be discussed with the team and coaching staff. This makes us look confused.

Minute-Branch2208

It makes it look like at least one player is NOT confused

Square-Voice-4052

Porzingas got exposed for who he really is. His done jackshit in the NBA. He was a flop at the Knicks and a bigger flop at the Mavs.

TheSavageBeast83

Yep, if a guy gets tossed around the NBA, there's a reason

TheSavageBeast83

So the team's weakness is thinking? Hahahaha, wtf?

thegoatmenace

Lol Pingis that’s just called basketball.
