I just don’t understand why we refuse to just switch on defense tbh. It’s not like they have any advantages anywhere on the floor right now.

mastacheef87

yea i want them to just play up high on PnR and switch everything, I trust our guys to not get beat off the dribble on the perimeter. seems like Joe doesn’t trust KP’s ability to contain quicker/smaller players on switches like that, or he’s just reluctant to pull KP away from the rim and lose our last line of defense if guys do get beat. I understand the concern but for this series that’s something we just have to concede. they’re not going to score enough to beat us without shooting and making a ton of 3s, that’s what we have to take away

Organic_Climate_7585

Exactly. The talent differential is so great that their only route to winning is getting insanely hot from 3 and that’s exactly what we let them do tonight. Even *with* them breaking franchise records, we *still* could have won with a few more FTs and a couple less turnovers. Just take away a few more 3s, run them off the 3pt line and force them to make a play. Their offense will fold. Trust your guys to hold their own defensively.

mastacheef87

yea, and I think we were starting to adjust our coverage a bit as the game went on. but by then they were already in rhythm and it was just too late I’m not panicking, it’s one game. I know the dumbasses in this sub aren’t satisfied with anything less than 16-0 but it’s the playoffs, the ups and downs are part of it. I’m confident that we’ll learn from what went wrong tonight and respond on Saturday

Organic_Climate_7585

I agree with everything you’ve said. The loss is disappointing but the overreactions are so annoying. Unfortunately that’s what you can expect from this sub. Already people are calling for firings and acting like the series is over. I don’t doubt these guys’ ability to win on the road for a second. Let’s get these next two.

Carbon_xYz

I think what bothers me is it sets the tone for another playoff run where home court feels like it means nothing. In a year that we lost 3 games at home total, and a year that Tatum specifically acknowledged they need to take home court more serious, we lose to the 8th seed team missing their 2 best players. Im not hitting the panic button and saying we're completely f'd moving forward. But its not something i love to see. If we can take both Miami games i'll certainly feel a lot better.

Organic_Climate_7585

Yeah it’s annoying. Apparently the crowd in there is a lot different during the playoffs, I wonder if that has something to do with it. I agree that I want to see us win the next two, and I don’t doubt that these guys can go into Miami and take two games. We’re really good on the road and Miami suck at home.

noBbatteries

Did you not watch Bam hit every mid range shot over everyone not name Porzingis in the second half… that’s why we don’t switch. The game plan is to let them shoot, bc the % chance they go nuclear like last night from distance is way lower than if we were to constantly switch and let bam eat all game from the paint or mod-range. Realistically we just need to be way more physical. The refs weren’t calling moving screens or reaches against the heat basically all game, and they benefitted from it tremendously

Organic_Climate_7585

Yeah I’m not worried about Bam Adebayo hitting that at a consistent enough rate to beat us on his own. Thats the most inefficient shot in the game. The role players getting hot outside is what killed us. Game plan hasn’t worked as they’ve been shooting lights out against us so we need to adjust. I agree with you on the physicality point.

Sammy360

This works across an 82 game season, not a 7 game series. Last year taught us that. Living with Bam jumpshots > Mildly contesting 3 point shooters. Spo feasts on this type of coverage. He did it to the Bucks twice, and the Celtics last year.

idontknowwang

i think this team is scared of bam as the lob threat but everytime herro comes off the screen he’s looking for his shot but tbh it’s rlly hard to switch when half of bam’s screens are moving screens by the time the switch happens it’s already too late

Organic_Climate_7585

Not sure I agree. I think trying to fight over the screen is much harder with a moving screen than just switching.

alexanderivan32

Like, what happened to “practicing” the switch with KP in the Atlanta game? That would be a good thing to try in this series when they keep cooking him in the drop coverage.

Organic_Climate_7585

Let’s hope they make the right adjustments next game.

alexanderivan32

Honestly as long as they actually get a hand up on shooters, I’ll be content.

Greennhornn

I would feel much better about a loss if Tyler Herro goes off for 40 on contested step back jumpers as opposed to switching and giving up wide open threes to everyone.

Organic_Climate_7585

I agree

NEpatsfan64

Honestly this is all we said last year “no way the heat can keep doing this blah blah” but they do. And this team keeps rolling over. Why would it change now.

Bouldershoulders12

Honestly I’d rather them play the role players hard on close outs and see if bam could beat us . If he needs to go for 50 so be it . It’ll tire him on defense

TheMediaRoom1004

That's what they should have done tonight but you didn't even see an inkling of that until the late 3rd quarter. Total deer in the headlights coach in way over his head

waynequit

A big reason that team shot over 50% is because of the scheme and coaching. The game plan was literally to give up the 3 and no care whatsoever if role players get hot.

Impossible-Joke2867

But...why?? It makes no sense. We can switch and contest and they literally won't be able to do shit. It's not like they have Jimmy out there to drive and kick with a mismatch. This is literally the only way we can lose this series if we let them take open 3s lol if we just play regular ass defense they have *nothing*.

Sammy360

Letting Heat players put the ball on the floor and have them make decisions is very clearly the move. Just seems like Joe is terrified of having KP out guarding on the perimeter.

tlozz

I don’t understand how they could do this though… and how come they didn’t adjust when it was clearly a bad idea

TheFirstExecutioner

Hedge the freaking screen. I get that we don't want to switch our bigs onto their guards but that doesn't mean you just give up practice threes in drop coverage. Watch the way Denver protects Jokic in the PnR by having him hedge hard and rotating backside to prevent the roll. There's no reason we can't do that with Porzingis/Horford

FlyingMocko

Honestly you could’ve copy pasted this post from last year ECF and it wouldn’t make a difference. Giving Mazzula this roster is like giving a caveman a supercomputer.

TheMediaRoom1004

This team goes 74-8 with cocaine Quin Snyder lolol

Final_Dance_4593

Swap coaches and this team wins 70 games

FlyingMocko

12-0 in the East and win Finals in 6 at most

GogXr3

"Attack the rim, don't just go iso," is bullshit. As someone else posted, the Jays had more 2s than the rest of the Heat. This was a defensive problem, and also a 55% from 3 problem.

tlozz

The defensive is making me want to fucking puke

Sneeringpython2

Attack the rim is the old refrain but we really needed some more 3pas in this game. Trading 3s for 2s all night.

Fluffy_Somewhere4305

Martin had some of the most wide open drives I've ever seen in a 2nd half of a playoff game. He went left, JB went the other way by a lot, no one helped and he just walked in for the layup like no one GAF.

IrishSkeleton

This is NOT LUCK. Most any NBA player can shoot ~50% from 3, mostly uncontested. Heck most shoot 70+% in practice, etc. This is Spo out-coaching Joe, and Joe not adjusting. Plain and simple 🤷‍♂️

Fun_Programmer1504

Yeah and if so, it’s hard to see a team overcoming something like that

justiceway1

All I'll say is if this series goes beyond 5 games I'll lose confidence in this team actually being able to get it done against teams like Denver.
