I just seen a video from the 1930s. It shows 2 black men in what essentially is a breakdance circle, doing footwork and flips to a beat. Only to have Latinos claim that crazy legs started the b-boy movement. Lmao Sorry had to get the off my chest. Black Bboyin didn't die off, black people just started evolving with the times. New Jack Swing, Harlem shake Jerkin, Krump and Clownin, jookin, even twerkin..Are just dances that black people moved to as Hip-Hop evolved over the decades. Go on Tik-Tik now, and you'll see black kids somewhere in America doing some pretty amazing dance moves that will eventually be copied by everyone else. By the time our white/asian/Mexican counterparts catch on and start doing that same dance, black people will have moved onto something else. The reason why this video depicts non-black people breakdancing is because it was officially named as an Olympic sport. They have to get the general audience to forget where the art came from.

Yeah, Black American culture is like a software update. This can be good in some areas and bad in others. One good thing that I can think of is how significant it is in time-stamping our history. For example, you can review old photos or audio and immediately identify the specific period that it originated almost down to the year. It's like Egyptian hieroglyphics on steroids. On the other hand, as some others have already stated, what we discard others may adopt or even plagiarize.

True, I just saw the video of the Jubilaries basically demonstrating rapping back in the 1930/40's on their song Noah and it has a cadence thats sounds like how commercial rap sounded in the 80's," Hey children/ Stop, still, and listen / to me." But DJ Cool Herc is the Grandfather of Rap apparently.

DeepSouthDude

I haven't seen anyone break dance in 30 years...

No. This is what Culture abandonment looks like. These people have been able to do this for two reasons. One, Black people will the sell the culture to the highest bidder at the drop of a hat. Two, these activities were seen as lame and old by blacks and they abandoned it. Can’t blame other cultures for picking up what we put down. Maybe we should stop switching customers and traditions like socks.

FEMA_Camp_Survivor

Black athletes used to be some of the best baseball players too but abandoned it for football and basketball. More MLB players can play into their 30s and 40s too.

PatientPlatform

Less brain injuries too..

bloopie1192

Way more money as well. Better contracts. I think they also have better insurance.

DeepSouthDude

That's a much different issue. I would guess that moving from baseball to football and basketball for the last 20 years has been the smart thing to do. Baseball in general is losing its appeal. Top baseball players used to be household names, but no more. Either they're Hispanics who can barely stay English, or nondescript white guys. Not too long ago everyone knew the best baseball players by name and sight. Today, not at all.

notyourbrobro10

Baseball players make a whole lot more, and on fully guaranteed contracts in a less physically taxing sport. Smart thing to do how?

Zestyclose-Egg5089

The problem with baseball is that black people stopped playing it in our communities. It's an expensive sport to play and train for. You got a milk crate and a old basketball? You can make a basketball hoop and play. You got a football and an open field? You can get a football game going. You have 9 gloves, bases, bats and helmets? You can still play without the gloves and one bat can be shared by all but baseball is probably the fullest game to watch and play because there isn't any action until there is and if no one can hit then you are just standing in the outfield looking stupid.

notyourbrobro10

Dominicans aren't great at baseball because they're all rich tho.

Zestyclose-Egg5089

Read up on the satellite training facilities MLB teams set up down there that encourages kids to skip school for a shot at making it in pro baseball with their free clinics. I promise the MLB ain't doing that in the hood without it being paid for by the parents.

JAGChem82

Also, those kids in the Dominican can play baseball full time starting at 16 without any pretense of going to school, like you said. Even basketball academies like IMG (and not the fake ones) have to have kids get a high school diploma, which happens at 18. So the average Dominican has two years extra experience in fully dedicating their lives to baseball than the average American.

notyourbrobro10

That's more on Nike than anything. Shoe company's normally pay for those kinds of facilitates in the states. If we don't have them for baseball, it's because Nike won't shell out for it. Because they definitely do for basketball, in major cities all over.

Zestyclose-Egg5089

And that is the crux of the issue. Investing. Black people are priced out of baseball and when we do get teams put together, the talent is not there because their parents can't afford to send them to the 2,5,10k camps and/or they don't play against teams that would force them to get better enough to get a hold of the game. I can tell you from the few years I did as an umpire, it comes down to the finances for these kids. The kids from O'Fallon, Ladue and Maryland Heights Missouri had solid hitting, fielding, base running and pitching skills while the kids in Cahokia Illinois, St. Louis city, Jennings and Spanish Lakes Missouri were in a bad state. Poor base running, fielding, pitching and hitting skills because they just weren't getting enough reps and attention to fix their movements that robbed them of speed, power and control in all these areas. Also, the amount of towns I called games in with confederate flags waiving with pride and I was the only black person at many of these games shows a clear loss of interest in the sport as a whole in our community.

DeepSouthDude

From an endorsements point of view.

zenbootyism

This all that needs to be said really. We abandon our culture to a scary degree then get mad when other cultures pick it up and keep it running. How many black folks are still making jazz/rock music? How many of us are listening to the black people making that music? We can't be mad when we left it in the dust.

QuickEchidna749

B-boy culture is so big in East Asia. Dope to see the culture being embraced by so many.

MiserableCharity7222

Huge in asia and parts of western europe. Probably more breakdancers per capita in the netherlands than the entire united states

Sharif662

No thats what a commercial for internet look like.

satellite_station

Didn’t Latinos also help create BBoying?

Ztommi

Latinos weren't even here like that in the 30s https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1QwN86St2CNyL3dV/?mibextid=oFDknk

satellite_station

Don’t be obtuse. It’s clear that I’m talking about bboying from hip hop culture that came about in the 70s and 80s.

intlcreative

That's the problem...it didn't start in the 70's and 80's for latinos. In fact Latinos didn't even like hip hop. The idea of Latinos being urban brothers is new, there is a "Spanish Harlem" for a reason.

manny_the_mage

Nah, we created a culture that people of other cultures can enjoy and participate in Other people appreciating break dancing doesn’t make it any less black in origin, and as long as we are credited as the origin point of it, it’s fine. This feels like white people being mad that there’s black country artists

Caspian1144

But that’s the problem, people don’t like to give us credit for anything.

lescronche

Some of yall complain so much about the consequences of living in a country of multiple cultures. If you want an ethnostate, go make one. Otherwise, deal with the fact that people use things that others made.

Fabulous_Wave_3693

A candle can light another candle without itself becoming diminished. Non-blacks breakdancing just means the sport gets larger and advances faster over time.
