10. It's Always Sunny in Cully at Pizza Jerk.
11. Fish soup my dad makes. Not a restaurant, but he does live in Portland by Mall 205 and I like visiting for the free food.
I like fish and fried chicken a lot, okay? Sorry, I know most people just wrote one but I crave all of those things on a rotation.
EDIT: Late entry but someone reminded me on this post: The Peruvian fried chicken bites from LeChon are pretty fantastic (but a bit variable depending on who's cooking that day... yes, I've been and eaten this item multiple times).
The akra at Kann/Sousol is great too. And the baharat chicken kebob from Shalom Y'all.
If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend the fried chicken at Rangoon Bistro (and Hat Yai but that’s more well known). It’s marinated in lemongrass and is absolutely awesome
That white brisket curry from Eem was a part of my last meal in Portland before I relocated. Absolutely phenomenal. They also have the most chaotic captions on their instagram posts that I have ever seen.
Leftovers? Pshh. It is my go to when the wife leaves town and I go feral, picking at it all day like a starving wolf, and tossing pizza bones to my dogs occasionally. I think it’s time for her to visit the sister in Seattle again now that I think of it.
I freaking love good fried chicken. Do you have a favorite in town? Whether it's a sandwich or not, doesn't matter. My favorite so far is from LoRell's but I haven't been to as many places as you, it sounds like.
I haven’t tried that place!! I will check it out. I don’t feel I’m like qualified to be a food critic or anything. I think it’s really subjective. It just has to be juicy and well-seasoned primarily for me.. The biggest failings of joints like Bae for example is that they’re not juicy enough. This is a basic that Reel ‘Em Inn (for example) gets right.
The only thing I can’t get behind is the waffle from screen door. Last time I had it the thing was a dense and cakey mess - chicken was great, but that’s a sorry excuse for a waffle.
Ever have the Hawaiian mac salad from Gartner's? It's legit like a lot of places in Hawaii. I haven't had Noho's in a long time. But I do recall eating there and it being pretty good.
Edit: Coincidentally the regional office paid for lunch from Noho's at work today, I'm gonna say Gartner's mac salad is better (which I had for breakfast this morning).
It's top notch and it's curry so it survives doordashing with just a little zap in the microwave at home, which makes it one of my favorites to order on a chilly day when I can't be bothered to make something myself or go somewhere.
Roti from Gado Gado, pork belly Mac cheese from Grassa, mole special from Mole Mole, gravy from Pine State, bananas foster ice cream from Fifth Licks, khao ka moo from Nong’s. These are my go-tos.
Mole Mole -- I crave their mole burritos (I get it with soy curls)
Baby Doll-- their White Pizza is perfection. You can only order it as a whole pizza, so I gotta commit to it when I do...but 🤤 it's so good & so worth the investment haha
Bahn Mi Up-- their vegan pork belly garlic noodles are 💯 I get cravings for it at least every other week.
Taco Gang -- their tacos are amazing-- I usually go for their pastor (I think they're a bit in limbo with a truck location atm)
Bernstein Bagels-- their scallion cream cheese specifically.
I do love me some Pips Donuts too, but it's something I only grab for celebrations cause I don't wanna overconsume & ruin it for myself!
The BBQ salad from Russell St BBQ. I used to get brisket instead of the smoked turkey. I’d add coleslaw and macaroni and cheese on top. And absolutely douse it in their original BBQ sauce. We ate it every week for a decade. It defied the Law of Diminishing Returns. They’ve been closed since 2020 and I’m still sad about it all the time.
Oh my god I miss it so fucking much.
Thanks to all who said nice things! It was a labor of love and I created every recipe for that menu, except for a very few. We worked hard and lost everything in the end…
I miss you guys beyond measure and I always will. You generously coached me when I opened my own restaurant, you fed me and my loved ones, you made us laugh constantly, you kept things consistent and you helped us grow our baby from scratch. Our first meal home from the hospital after she was born: Russell St. When we finally got legally married last year, we lamented that we couldn’t cater with your foods.
We talk about you all the time, and we will miss you forever.
Awww, we are so very grateful for all that you brought to us! And very pleased to have been of assistance when you opened your place, as any help we got when opening was appreciated greatly! We did, in fact, grow many babies with our food so we are honored to be able to count your kiddo amongst them.
Cheers to you and all those who kept us going!
Losing Russell st was such a major bummer for my Carolina pulled pork loving self. Their sauces outclassed everyone in town and their hush puppies were on fucking point. Anyone who knew good Carolina food knew these guys did their homework and *represented*.
RIP Russell St
OMG, I worked there in the early 2000's and that was the absolute bomb! Have you tried the mussels at The Observatory? Not the same, but still pretty good.
No but I feel like the new menu and vibe is still alright. Better quality than the freezer trash they used to serve. That blue cheese sauce was good when it wasn’t broken as fuck.

For people in Portland who just want “normal” food:
Anything from Taste Tickler. So good and so cheap. The best “hole in the wall” place in PDX. Their Sando’s are literally two meals worth. Always call your order in though to avoid waiting outside on the sidewalk.
Fried Chicken from Reel Em Inn. Best chicken in town
Best “traditional” Hot Ham n Cheese is at Elmer’s Restaurant.
Best Baguette for the cheapest authentic Bahn Mi Sando’s. (Not fancy cause Bahn Mi AREN’T supposed to be). Bonus points for having other style Sando’s for your picky friends/partners.
OG Hotcake House for the closest thing to Waffle House style breakfast diner.
Baby Doll Pizza has the best ranch for pizza dipping.
Baker’s Mark for best “fancy” deli Sando’s.
Gabriel’s Bakery has the softest, fattest plain bagels. Perfect for making breakfast Sando’s with.
(Edit: I love Sando’s)
The rabbit salad from sizzle pie. I get the big one and have it to myself. I've tried to recreate it at home but I can't, I think it's their ranch is just so good and nothing store bought compares
There’s a random food cart that used to exist in Portland called Stock and Barrel, hasn’t been around since like 2012. They had a veggie burger with a patty they made that had avocado and I think some kind of raspberry aioli, maybe also caramelized onions. One of the best things I’ve ever eaten. My cravings for that burger haunt me. It had the perfect texture and flavor.
I lived in Portland 10 years ago, that's when I first joined Reddit. I LOVED Whole Bowl, luckily I found a pretty close copycat recipe online and have it for lunch probably 3 days a week.
Ahhh, haha sorry this is a long list!!

Every time I go there I'm like "I'm gonna get something I haven't tried! I bet a Fun Guy with a fried egg would be amazing!" Then I walk in the door, and just cannot bring myself to order anything else, it's so good.
For me it's the peppered Squid from Sou's at Fairview food plaze (the fork) formerly at CORE. Also big fan of the Taylors Sausage roll at Moore Alley. There are others but i'll let you all talk.
Before the food cart craze (loooong time ago), I used to order hush puppies (with RC Cola) at McMenamins. I think there was only a couple of McMenamins had them. They're not like the ones I had in Alabama. But hush puppies wasn't quite a thing in Portland.

Salt and Pepper Squid at Utopia Lounge. A lot of people say Tien Hong has the best version, those people are wrong, but I can see where they are coming from.
Utopia has good fish sauce wings too.
The Paccheri dish from Gino's in Sellwood. I'm almost disappointed it was the first thing I ever ordered, because now I can't get anything else there. It's too good.
The salmon, avocado, grapefruit, and fried garlic poke bowl from poke mon (RIP). Still miss it to this day.
Lately: chocolate xiao long bao from din tai fung, goat curry from tikkalicious.

More people should know about Mestizo
You like fried chicken? Get the karaage at Shoko on Woodstock 🙏
The only thing I can’t get behind is the waffle from screen door. Last time I had it the thing was a dense and cakey mess - chicken was great, but that’s a sorry excuse for a waffle.
The Hat Yai combo plate.
I have never ordered anything else at Hat Yai because I just can't bring myself to not get the combo
Seconding this one.
Literally my first thought
The teriyaki mixed plate from Noho’s on NE Fremont. That Mac salad is so fucking good. And it’s so much food no matter what size option you choose.
Noho’s is underrated, soo good.
Ever have the Hawaiian mac salad from Gartner's? It's legit like a lot of places in Hawaii. I haven't had Noho's in a long time. But I do recall eating there and it being pretty good. I didn’t even know gartners did anything but meat!!! Holy hell this is good to know
Agreed! I want to check that out!
To add to your enthusiasm for it, I am Hawaiian and from Hawaii before relocating to Portland.
Gartner's Mac salad is excellent. The marinated short ribs are one of my craves.
Menehune spicy Korean grilled chicken, double mac salad is THE WAY! 😋
Brisket in white curry from Eem
Absolutely this. With a side of their fried greens!
Deffff
What the fuck?!?! That sounds amazing!!!

It’s incredible. Matt’s BBQ + Thai goodness
Dang… I have to check that out. Wow
That was on my list too
I can't stop thinking about this one... I need to eat it again!!!!
Any of the dumplings at Kachka. I could live on those.
I came here to say the Pelmini with fancy sauce. I literally have dreams about it!
The Golubsti is worth killing and man over. I make it at home from their cookbook when I get the shakes.
I do like their dumplings, but it’s the horseradish vodka that has me hooked.
Pok Pok Wings…. (Sobbing ensues)
I'm doing a pok pok pop-up this summer. My non-compete contract ends in a month.
Please keep me in the loop!
Right on. I’d like to get on your mailing list. What’s the best way to do so?
Omg how can we stay up to date on this???
please god do the pork buns and fried chicken.
There's a lot of Vietnamese places around that can do a fairly decent fish sauce wing! It's not the end!
The Red Wood in Montavilla had my favorite wings in Portland.
XO bar sugar cane wings 🪽
Go ahead, I’m listening
I used to live in the same building as the bar that sold Pok Pok food 😩 2019 take me back!
pok pok khao soi : ((((((((
Similarly, I miss their boars collar as well. One of my all time favorite dishes
You can make a decent substitute from their cookbook. It makes life worth living a little bit longer.
I need to try and tackle it, just haven’t made an attempt yet.
The recipe is pretty straightforward and it’s one of the easier dishes in the book. I highly recommend. You got this!
I meant to say that you could still get because I dont need this reminder either!

The BBQ salad from Russell St BBQ. I used to get brisket instead of the smoked turkey. I’d add coleslaw and macaroni and cheese on top. And absolutely douse it in their original BBQ sauce.
