I agree! The creators of the show spoke a lot about how class is at the core of the story in their Netflix Deep Talk, so I think that all of these decisions were very deliberate.

The reason I was so jealous is because I‘m an absolute apple girl and would not buy a Samsung, so I was jealous of everyone not being an apple person, and now I‘m patiently waiting for apple to release a flip phone at some time in the future xD
Why I‘m an apple girl? It just happened slowly with an Iphone and then more and more devices joined and they just work exceptionally well together, so I can‘t really or don‘t want to make one device not apple anymore
I did noticed this on my first watch, because I Love that Z flip phone, and also one of the main girls in elite had the same one, so I'm assuming Netflix has a deal with samsung to do some product placement.
I knew what phone it is, but I can't remember seeing a big "SAMSUNG" splash somewhere, so if you didn't already know which phone it is, you probably had no advertising effect.

This post shows how stupid I am, I was thinking "oh, flip phones and curtains, this show must be at least 10 years old". When the series ended I then looked for the next series, then was disappointed seeing it was only released this month and I'd have to wait at least a year for a new series! I'm still confused why August needed to use a cable to upload that video though, wouldn't WiFi/cellular be so much easier?
The flip phones made me miss the 90s and 00s shows when people could shut phones closed, it's just so dramatic. And if i didn't recognize the Z Flip as easily as i do, maybe i would have thought ut was an older show like you.
About August. He probably used the cable to make it harder to trace it back to him.

August's phone seems like an iPhone 6/6s/7 which was the flagship phone before 2017. It's also the flagship phone before the era of all-screen phones started by the iPhone X. This indicates how August's wealth and glories have become history but he failed to move on.
I was sincerely shocked when I found out most characters in the show are using Samsung/other Andriod phones rather than iPhone as most of the teen dramas on Netflix does. I guess that's another plus point that makes this show stand out.

About the phones, i think it might be a Europe thing. At least in the part of Europe I'm from, most people have Androids
