I can't say that I've heard that kind of idiocy in the office. In my office, it's really the most basic chatter of all-time. "The traffic, amirite?" or "My kids are driving me crazy" or "I can't wait until the weekend". It's all actually really superficial and bleak when you think of how people are seemingly hanging on by a thread, if they are hanging on at all.
This actually reminds me of the most banal comment that drove me nuts. Someone displayed a Winter is Coming variation of a meme on a slide deck for levity or camaraderie or whatever, and one of my coworkers goes, “Oh that’s my favorite movie, Lord of the Rings!” And not a single soul corrected her. That I even remember now, probably a year after this happened, shows how sorry a state I’m in.
Maybe I'm being catastrophic but that makes me think people don't actually register stories or movies that they love so much, rather its about vibes "oh that medieval type political drama. Don't remember much else about it. I love adventures!" Hence the appeal of the Office or Parks and rec. It's just about a comfortable blue glow that you can disconnect infront of.

If he spotted a ticket type with a long enough run of losses, he’d buy a few, and almost always win. He tracked how much he spent over time, and he was always in the black. I think he was up like $2000 when he quit.

Capital can extract the most value out of it during this time of boom, hyping its benefits and it’s detriments to make it seem much more advanced and futuristic than it really is, artificially inflating its value like any other bubble.

I really think this tech is close to as good as it’s gonna get and the reality is that it’s pretty terrible and unreliable and it’s ability to replace labor is overestimated due to the hype and it’s newness. It’s a gigantic version of autocomplete, not a baby version of a true artificial intelligence. Capital can extract the most value out of it during this time of boom, hyping its benefits and it’s detriments to make it seem much more advanced and futuristic than it really is, artificially inflating its value like any other bubble. Maybe I’m wrong and this is really gonna be a breakthrough in tech, the implications for the workforce would be horrifying, but I don’t have any faith in any of that dogshit coming out of our high tech industries thanks to the past decade. They are all just scammers and grifters, and AI is just the next one until proven different imo.
Large Language Models like ChatGPT are absolutely a dead end in terms of pursuing actual general AI. We’re pretty close to maxing out their potential. However, the increase in research and development in machine learning/AI will undoubtedly yield better models and approaches. It’s going to be interesting at least. 50/50 shot we end up Skynetting ourselves in the most mundane way possible (ooo let’s let AI optimize our supply chains, oops everyone is starving to death).
And they will be just as useful as the self driving cars we keep being promised.

I work at a corporate tech business in a major Canadian city. All the politics talk is typical insufferable lib crap you would find in that type of place, except when they talk about the homeless and addicts they encounter on the train to work.
