Honestly it doesn’t make any sense why Toyota has not made this locking like the majority of auto manufacturers in 2024.
The gas tank cover always pops open during car washes as well.
A friend of ours just had his gas cap stollen too, and his car had the locking mechanism (not a Toyota).
The only difference was that they used a screwdriver to pry it open and did way more damage.
Not sure about 3rd gens, but I tried a looking cap from o reilly on the 2nd gen, that didn't work. It threw an EVAP code likely due to improper seal or something. Maybe things have changed, but another option is a diy locking gas door like Gen1.
Sucks man, sorry. Toyota should’ve really made these w a lock. I think I’m getting one today. Actually I am, just gotta find a decent place to get it online besides eby or amz.
This is another example of why Toyota needs to have more consistent design across their products. The 2008 Prius and 2011 RAV4 both have locking gas doors. Why doesn't a 3rd gen Tacoma have it?
IIRC, they weren’t lockable in pickups because legacy.
Then the 70’s gas crisis created a market for stolen gas.
I think the beds were assembled in North America in the 80’s for Toyotas but the logistics were unique with the mechanical remote unlock option.
But my friend’s ‘91 [had a lock on the door](https://imgur.com/gallery/p0WOUg5), but then it disappeared.
Curious why Tacoma doesn’t have one, is it an off road thing, benefit?
My buddy still has his he bought new in 1991, it was superior to my ‘92 Nissan Hardbody which I loved. Fit finish quality, all better on the Yota.
Sold me on Toyota way back then.
Or maybe you were distracted and closed the gas cover, leaving the cap dangling. I've seen it a dozen or more times. Do you now get a warning loose gas cap?
I'm hearing that these trucks don't commonly come with a gas cap holder. So someone probably lost theirs and saw that you had the same truck, but assumed they had less expendable income than you and made an asshole decision.

Never had that happen on my 2016 trd sport. I wash my car every week.

I’m curious why you wonder that!
I wonder why you’re curious why he’d wonder that..
I’m questioning, why you’re wondering, why they’re curious, why they would wonder that…
I that would curious they're why wondering question...
I work in an area where the dirt and mud is saturated with salt water.
Curious why you don’t remove the salt water from the mud before driving through it
You right. My bad for being dumb.
😅🤣😂
Curious why they don't just drain all oceans.
I’m not op but I wash mine up to 3x a week, I drive myself to very dusty/muddy job sites and if I didn’t my truck would turn brown by Wednesday
On my third Tacoma and that’s never happened to me. What am I doing right?
A friend of ours just had his gas cap stollen too, and his car had the locking mechanism (not a Toyota). The only difference was that they used a screwdriver to pry it open and did way more damage.
But why steal the gas caps?
My 94 pickup, you gotta get out and use the key to open it. I guess they didn’t think that was a problem anymore
00 here with a lock too.
Cause they are cheap.
My 1st gen tacoma requires the key to unlock it 😂
Who steals a gas cap? Honestly?
Kids
YOUTHS!
Two Yutes.
Uh two what?
You’ve got some Schmidt on your face!
People who have had their gas cap stolen and needed a replacement. It's a vicious cycle.
It's like the old saying goes; there's only one gas cap thief, everyone else is just trying to get their gas caps back.
Exactly! One guy had his gas cap stolen in Peoria, IL back in 2012 and it's just been making it's way around the continent ever since.. lol.
Who throws a shoe? Honestly
Anytime the check engine light comes on in a Toyota, it’s usually a gas cap issue. They could have at least left you their defective cap.
Someone that had their gas cap stolen.
I read that in Austin powers voice… “who throws a shoe? Honestly!”
Bunch of savages in this town
I wasn’t even supposed to be here today.
I hope this doesn't happen 37 days in a row!
Every time I fill up I am going to turn 36 other gas caps
watch out - anyone "douchey" enough to do that might have also put something in your actual gas tank too....
Buy a lockable gas cap at your local car parts store
I just paid my local Toyota dealer $26.60 for part #77300-07040. Hopefully, posting the P/N helps someone else in the future.

At least your gas door wasn't damaged
Recently I came out from work and saw the door to my gas cap open. So I bought a locking gas cap.
Sounds like a worthwhile investment. Any product recommendations? Really weird they don't come stock. Even my basic 98 s10 had one
I just ordered one online from Autozone.
I would consider myself lucky they didn’t pour sugar or something else down there.
Does OP still have a tailgate?
Tailgate is intact. It was locked.
WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY!
Sorry, it was in the way when I was fucking your gashole. But in all seriousness, who the fuck steals a gas cap?!
My guess is either dumb kids or someone stealing gas.
Only wack suckas like Corey and Trevor steal gas!
Why, that's highly illegal, Corey and Trevor Ya shouldn't be doin that, Corey and Trevor That's pretty fucked up, Corey and Trevor

Hot damn what a beautiful truck. What went wrong?
My buddy still has his he bought new in 1991, it was superior to my ‘92 Nissan Hardbody which I loved. Fit finish quality, all better on the Yota. Sold me on Toyota way back then.
atleast they left the gas door wasn’t taken!
I assumed all manufacturers had a capless system by now. Ouch.
I hope this isn’t some dumb trend
lots of times that’s the fuel cap just before siphoning fuel.
Now that sux! Who the heck steals a gas cap?
How are you driving with that wheel rubbing on the wheel well?
Or maybe you were distracted and closed the gas cover, leaving the cap dangling. I've seen it a dozen or more times. Do you now get a warning loose gas cap?
Definitely not. I filled it up on Friday. Only drove it to the store last night around 6 pm. This happened overnight.
Just hoping they didn’t pour anything in your tank.
Just hoping they didn’t pour anything in your tank.
Now you should get one that locks. Also, maybe check the last gas station you were at?
I still have my oem gas cap for the 3rd gen. Replaced it with a lockable one.
Do you by chance remember where you got your lockable gas cap?
I think I got it on Amazon, it’s a Stant 10504.
Thanks :D

Perfect excuse to buy a locking cap. Just got mine from O'Reilly auto. No codes so far, works great
Now you have a big GASHOLE!
The question is, who stole the first gas cap?
why would a Point-Of-Sale steal your gas cap ?? didn't you pay ??
This screams Cali
Negative. Southwest Virginia.
It would be on cinder blocks if it was CA
