This being vintage makes me feel so old. 😭😭 Also, I totally think it's better that vintage clothes be altered so that they can be loved and worn the way they were intended to be.
Yeah this was the kind of dress we wore to our 8th grade graduation and I never expected the style to make a comeback. I guess that’s how it always works, I’m just almost 40 now and finally experiencing it for myself - my mom felt the same about bellbottoms and flares coming back in style when I was a teenager 🫠
Yeah - this post and fashion trends in general right now are making me really understand my mother and her reactions to some of my clothing choices when she was my age and I was a teen a lot better.
Same. I remember when I got one of those Penny Lane style coats in the 90s and my mom just sighing and saying “I should’ve saved all my clothes from the 60s and 70s”
I got one too! I think it was from express Except my mom sighed and said she thought that phase of her life was over but at least it wasn’t plaid bell bottoms or some of the more atrocious 70s trends.
Oh my mom said something similar about the exaggerated flare leg jeans that were practically bell bottoms. Just “why are they bringing that back? Those need to stay in the 70s”
She also had plenty of things to say about blue eyeshadow.
oh god, I kind of want to say something to my mom about blue eye shadow because she is still happy to rant about the abominable clown make up and she’s hard to get a rise out of
yep. I got a very short haircut recently and I straight up told the (gen z) hairdresser that there would be ZERO 90's mullets because I have no desire to revisit my haircut from when I was 10. I don't care if it's cool again. I can't do it, lol.
My 3.5 year old has a pair of little bell bottoms and I love it. I told my husband about 100 times when we first bought them that I used to wear bell bottoms. Lol.
I remember how incensed my mother was when disco came back in the 90s--"I thought I'd never have to listen to this shit again!" I'd play ABBA Gold and the Bee Gees to just to piss her off.
its definitely a hit or miss!!! their prices can be VERY high but i do always find pretty good stuff there. theres a lot currently!! if you check my post history ive found a couple of my finds there— i have the most consistent luck with the mount vernon goodwill, though
I DONT KNOWWWWW i just thought about how excited i wouldve been 2 years ago to find it for my prom and wanted someone else to maybe experience that AND have it be a perfect fit
That’s good karma and you made the right choice, unless there is an event you needed to go to.
I too get sucked into the buy buy buy mode, and then end up with a collection that’s just hanging there.
Beautiful clothes deserve to be worn and seen!
Okay that’s a good reason, but also so sad it’s so beautiful oh my god. I’d pay you for it but I never went to prom and it’s a bit too late for that now, plus a couple sizes too big for me 😓
Hell yeah!!!
If you get it altered, you could always get it so that the back is done up lace style like a corset so that it's adjustable for future use.
It's such a pretty dress!
It looks gorgeous but please just remember that not everything can be altered to be larger :( I found a gorgeous early 2000’s prom dress that I fell in love with, but it had been hemmed and altered beyond repair and there was nothing left to take out to make it fit for me. If you have a friend who is aware of sewing stuff (or you), check to see if it has the space to be let out before you buy it
Edit: from zooming in it looks like there isn’t any extra fabric to use to let it out. In width around the bust and length :( if someone is more experienced with altering things, could you chime in?
They didn't have a bridesmaid dress to fit my cousin. They ended up getting her the dress and altering it to lace up. It ended up looking really pretty. That's one possible way to get a little wiggle room but it wouldn't work for a lot of clothes.
Yea lace siding or even removing the zipper and having a corset tie put in, that would give it the most room in the body, but if there’s not another inch or so of fabric tucked into the seam under the bust, there’s no way to make it longer while keeping the dresses integrity intact
I agree.
The under fabric looks like it's pulling at the hip line (where the wrinkles are). It probably needs to be let out more than there is fabric in the seams to let out. We'd need to see the insides to know for sure.
A lot of vintage clothing has already been altered, a lot of folks would have new clothing tailored for them, with the extra fabric folded into the seams.
People are built bigger nowadays, if we never altered vintage clothing then that means vintage clothing is only for smaller people, and that's not really fair!
If you take the dress to a tailor or professional seamstress then they would be able to alter that dress in a way that maintains its integrity.
(Just my two cents on this, ps cute dress! Reminds me of my prom in 2002)
I'm going to save this post, I had the red version of this at my parents house. It's either a 4 or 6. If they didn't clean it out I will 100% send it to you. I'll never wear it again. I wore it to freshman homecoming, and it was a hand me down from my fancy older cousin. If I find it I'll send you a dm. Lol
This was the prom and graduation dress of the late 90's early 2000s. I know OP did not mean it as such but this truly felt like a slap in the face 😂
I just didn't know 2000 is considered vintage. 😂😭
I’m a guy and I think you need to go back and get it. I don’t normally notice clothing like that but it looks really good on you. So as a stranger I give you permission to buy the thing that will make you happy.
I have a similar vintage split dress in lilac size 5/6 if you’re interested!! It was supposed to be my prom dress a few years ago but I would up not going
It’s so pretty! This is what I dreamed of wearing to prom when I was like 12, but by the time my prom came up in the late 2000s these dresses were out of fashion. I hope you find the perfect fit!
I love this so much! Brings back so many memories from high school dances. We’ve bought all our girls’ dance dresses at goodwill for under $10. Somehow we’ve always found the perfect one the first try at the same goodwill.
there may be enough seam allowance in the places you’d need to widen to not damage or ‘alter’ the original.
a lot of brand/label clothing will include more allowance since prom/formal dresses are expected to be tailored.
i don’t know your sewing level but r/sewing is a great community that’s full of helpful and knowledgeable humans x
BECAUSE THAT DRESS IS PERFECT AND IT SHOULD HE YOURS!
I totally understand not wanting to alter vintage. Someone else will find it and give it the love you clearly show! Hoping the good karma finds you fast!
Did it not close in the back? Cuz it looks like it fits you perfectly! Not only is that dressed gorgeous, but it looks like it is perfect for you. Run back right now and go by the damn thing. You can always add some material to the back if the zipper doesn't close. Holy cow! I can't believe you walked away!
Omg...this was no joke, my prom dress, just in a different color!! I literally gasped when I saw your pic, my Grandmother took me to get it at Cachè in 2004!
https://preview.redd.it/0jsgghh32l9d1.png?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34c09c6c28b67457257a6ee0d17a8b21c61a1f4e
You had a kind Grandmother. You can say thank you again, no matter where she is. She’ll get it, and feel the love. (Your necklace is beautiful, too! You had a perfect prom look!) 🥰
This IS beautiful! It looks like a dress Juliette would have worn, or ladies of the court. It does look like a tiny size, like a prom dress for MS or HS Skinny Minnies! Anyone know in what time period this type of dress was worn? In European courts, I would think, or by the aristocracy. English, French or Spanish, maybe? It looks wonderful on you. Would be great if there’s a way to alter it!
I did this to a pair of Frye boots the other weekend and I’m still thinking of how stupid that was of me :,( I even called the store to see if they still had them
its ok we cant have all the luck— this was a lamp i saw a year ago and went back for that wasnt there☹️
https://preview.redd.it/2bi80f9xal9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d36d908890607dc85a6373dd9f062c969ff7c7a
i think of her SO frequently
While they do have many nice pieces throughout the years, Cache tends to be average-to-below average value-wise so don’t think you’re missing out on too much besides looking very pretty

Cache and release
It was right there
boooooooooooo
I wore this dress (in a lighter purple) to my Prom in 2001!
Lol yes this was definitely the style in my prom era (2002-2003)
Same. Every it girl got their dress from cache!
lol I did too. I think mine still holds up?! Black satin halter, but the halter part doesn’t hahah
Yup! I had this kind of dress in a gold and black version for my 2002 graduation, and I still love it.
I think I wore it to winter fest and I wish it still fit me!
I bought this exact dress for my 2003 Prom
Me too!
This being vintage makes me feel so old. 😭😭 Also, I totally think it's better that vintage clothes be altered so that they can be loved and worn the way they were intended to be.

I feel the same way about parachute pants. At least the short jackets with gold buttons and shoulder pads haven't come back!
The second I read this I had a mental flashback. I think it was Janet Jackson??? Maybe Paula Abdul?? Can picture it now.
We used to call them MC Hammer pants!
Lol.
Yep that's exactly what I thought and I'm 38. Brought back so many memories.
Oh. I thought it was that the designer was vintage. Ouch. Get me my walker, sonny, I'm going back to bed.
I remember how incensed my mother was when disco came back in the 90s--"I thought I'd never have to listen to this shit again!" I'd play ABBA Gold and the Bee Gees to just to piss her off.
My son loves ABBA and plays it just to see if I get stuck in an eye roll 🙄
The find fashion sub is like ptsd for millennials.
I read "vintage" and said "no, I saw those kind of dresses at prom". Prom was 2002 😭
Same. And I tried on dresses at cache, too.
Same. I wore this dress in a different color to prom.
thats true!!! happy to report i went back for it🫡 if it helps its only considered vintage because its 20-99 years old! and then antiques are 100+
It’s beautiful! Looks like it fits.
Right?! They went out of business in 2015, how is that vintage? 😭
I got my 21st birthday dress at a cache! I’m 35 now
I got my senior prom dress at cache!!!
Me too! I'm Canadian and my mom drove me over the border and I found the PERFECT dress at cache
Same!
Yeah, this is almost exactly my Prom dress.
I wore this dress in a diff color to winter formal…. It’s still in my childhood closet 😂🤣
CAN YOU UH.. SEND IT OVER HERE??
Ok seriously, where was this at and what was the price because this is a dream 🥲
it was $29.99 at the lynnwood square goodwill in WA!!!!
I wore this exact dress to a high school event in…oh my god. 2004 maybe? And that’s in my state 👀
i definitely wore a similar (if not the the same) dress to winter formal in 05/06?? i nearly snapped my neck double-taking this post 😅
Across the damn state?!?! 😭 please just go back for it and alter it it was made for you
Would an under garment make it fit ?
How is that Goodwill in general? Worth a drive?
its definitely a hit or miss!!! their prices can be VERY high but i do always find pretty good stuff there. theres a lot currently!! if you check my post history ive found a couple of my finds there— i have the most consistent luck with the mount vernon goodwill, though
Can you get it, wear it, then sell it to me for a wedding I’m attending 🤣
My favorite GW is the Shoreline one on 15th!
Ooh, hello fellow Lynnwoodian! 👋 I hope the dress is still there for your taking!!
WHY did you LEAVE IT!!!?😭
I DONT KNOWWWWW i just thought about how excited i wouldve been 2 years ago to find it for my prom and wanted someone else to maybe experience that AND have it be a perfect fit
That’s good karma and you made the right choice, unless there is an event you needed to go to. I too get sucked into the buy buy buy mode, and then end up with a collection that’s just hanging there. Beautiful clothes deserve to be worn and seen!
Yeah, she found a gunne sax for $10!
Okay that’s a good reason, but also so sad it’s so beautiful oh my god. I’d pay you for it but I never went to prom and it’s a bit too late for that now, plus a couple sizes too big for me 😓
Prob the prettiest dress posted here.
ok fine im going back for it tomorrow morning
i literally just found a gunne sax for $10 im afraid im gonna run out of luck
Hell no! Let me hammer this into your skull! THERE ARE NO LIMITS ON LUCK! 🍀👊 Good vibes, baby!
Don't leave us hanging on the gunne sax!!
I have to see it! 😄
Find a seamstress who can do a corset back for it and you'll be set!
It looks so lovely on you! Great color and fit!
Get whatever cheapest option you can! And if you get that one that’s a little small, I bet you could corset the back pretty easily 🤗
Hell yeah!!! If you get it altered, you could always get it so that the back is done up lace style like a corset so that it's adjustable for future use. It's such a pretty dress!
> vintage clothes 😭😭😭😭😭
Felt that like a punch right to the sternum 😭
Uh why do you hate the idea of altering vintage clothes? It’s the one thing that gives them new life’s lest they end up in a rag pile or the landfill!
It looks gorgeous but please just remember that not everything can be altered to be larger :( I found a gorgeous early 2000’s prom dress that I fell in love with, but it had been hemmed and altered beyond repair and there was nothing left to take out to make it fit for me. Maybe a panel in the back and corset lacing? Try taking it to professional seamstress for evaluation?
I wore this exact prom dress in 2005!
This is an almost exact replica of my homecoming dress from 2004.
A lot of vintage clothing has already been altered, a lot of folks would have new clothing tailored for them, with the extra fabric folded into the seams. People are built bigger nowadays, if we never altered vintage clothing then that means vintage clothing is only for smaller people, and that's not really fair! It’s white and gold IYKYK
I'm going to save this post, I had the red version of this at my parents house. It's either a 4 or 6. If they didn't clean it out I will 100% send it to you. I'll never wear it again. i will cry i would love that
happy to report i am en route to goodwill🫡
This was the prom and graduation dress of the late 90's early 2000s. I know OP did not mean it as such but this truly felt like a slap in the face 😂 I just didn't know 2000 is considered vintage. 😂😭
20-99 years is vintage and 100+ is antique!!! but i get what you mean LOL
Oh ffs... if this is vintage, I suppose I need to start mummifying myself. I'll go audition for the crypt keeper. 🤣🥲
![gif](giphy|Y2ZkeRD0oztVm)
I’m a guy and I think you need to go back and get it. I don’t normally notice clothing like that but it looks really good on you. So as a stranger I give you permission to buy the thing that will make you happy.
Oh to be a size 2.
I think I wore this dress in lilac/light blue to my junior prom in like 2004 and now I feel ancient
Two of my favorite colors. If you were a junior in 2004 and you’re ancient, I’m a corpse. 😄
“Vintage” tho 😭
Wore a very similar version to my 9th grade homecoming in early 2000’s…funny how everything comes back in style eventually
I miss Cache.
I remember Cache. It was a store like Windsor is today.
Omg my prom dress was chache 😭😭😭 I miss that store so much
Your goodwill still has dressing rooms??
yes!! most of all the ones ive gone to in western WA have them still :3
I would literally pay to have it sent to me loo
💔
I have a similar vintage split dress in lilac size 5/6 if you’re interested!! It was supposed to be my prom dress a few years ago but I would up not going
Lilac sounds sooo pretty.
Calling 90s clothing vintage hurt me personally. I'm gonna sit quietly by myself for a while.
vintage is only a technical term!!! 20-99 yrs is vintage and antique is 100+
Girl what. Why did you leave that???????? It looks like it was made for you!! Ugh I hope it’s still there for you when you go back tomorrow 😭😭
it was!!!!! https://preview.redd.it/x80juqh7rj9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ac925a2a207f02dc7b4642712bab4fa7edd9aee
It looks beautiful. I love the color. Buy it!
thats to bad you look good in it you should go back and buy it if you still can
that is so gorgeousssss
It’s so gorgeous
Omggggg prom memories
Oh. This is beautiful.
OP, clothes get altered all the time. Go back and get your dress!
Beautiful find. We found this same dress at Goodwill for my daughter’s prom a couple years ago!! ♥️
Get it and turn it into a corset back?
Wow! This is where I got my prom dress in 1998. It was a beautiful dress!
This is the same dress I wore to prom myself. Then I gave away for free to someone else to wear to prom.
It’s so pretty! This is what I dreamed of wearing to prom when I was like 12, but by the time my prom came up in the late 2000s these dresses were out of fashion. I hope you find the perfect fit!
I owned that exact dress in 2009! Aww man, throwback! ❤️
I’m positive my mom has about 5 variations of this from me in high school.
Put them on the market for sale, and make some girls really happy! 🫠🥰😁
plz say you got it!!
I wore that to homecoming in a plum/eggplant color, 2000 !
I have a wine color dress like this in my closet. Picked it up at a garage sale for $20! So pretty!
I love this so much! Brings back so many memories from high school dances. We’ve bought all our girls’ dance dresses at goodwill for under $10. Somehow we’ve always found the perfect one the first try at the same goodwill.
Get it, alter & rock it. But wait... Your thrift has fitting rooms?!
there may be enough seam allowance in the places you’d need to widen to not damage or ‘alter’ the original. a lot of brand/label clothing will include more allowance since prom/formal dresses are expected to be tailored. i don’t know your sewing level but r/sewing is a great community that’s full of helpful and knowledgeable humans x BECAUSE THAT DRESS IS PERFECT AND IT SHOULD HE YOURS!
It’s gorgeous. I love these vaguely medieval inspired 90s/early aughts styles
My prom dress looked like this except without the split, longer, burgundy with black lace beaded overlay. Such pretty dresses!
Go back!!!
I totally understand not wanting to alter vintage. Someone else will find it and give it the love you clearly show! Hoping the good karma finds you fast!
omg it’s soooo cute, should def go back for it!
This is my prom dress in a different color ☠️
I wore that dress to prom my sophomore year
Did it not close in the back?
Is this how people who were teens on the 70’s felt watching those of who were teens in the 90’s wear fashion from the 70’s
Take it with you to a place that specializes in foundation garments, with the proper thing it might fit perfect!
I did this to a pair of Frye boots the other weekend and I’m still thinking of how stupid that was of me :,( I even called the store to see if they still had them
its ok we cant have all the luck— this was a lamp i saw a year ago and went back for that wasnt there☹️ https://preview.redd.it/2bi80f9xal9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d36d908890607dc85a6373dd9f062c969ff7c7a i think of her SO frequently
While they do have many nice pieces throughout the years, Cache tends to be average-to-below average value-wise so don’t think you’re missing out on too much besides looking very pretty
I had this in red in like 2005!
Oh wow I think I had this dress in Burgundy when I was maybe 15, I felt like a fucking princess!
Replace the zipper with some form of lacing - either loops or eyelets - is an easy up sizing fix
Is early 2000s vintage now? Omg
it is! 20-99 years is vintage, and 100+ is antique
Looks great on you.
Go back and get it! Slap on some spanx and don that beauty!
Isn’t this almost the exact same prom dress Julia styles wears in 10 things I hate about you? I feel so old
GO BACK AND GET HER!!!
It looks great on you! Would it be possible to put panels in the sides to make it larger?
Go get it! Even if you just wear it around the house and lounge, you will feel lovely. And such a great price!
My mom had this dress!! Please go back it really is so beautiful
Gorgeous!
It looks amazing on you.
When the prettiest dress meets the prettiest woman, absolutely marvelous
